So I’ve been a mesmer for like 3 years and just 3 months ago, i found my perfect pvp build. And yet, i have no idea how to classify it when other mesmers ask me. So, let me explain.
Dueling/Chaos/Illusions
Dueling-Phantasmal Fury, Fencer’s Finesse, DE
Chaos-Master of Manipulation, Chaotic Dampening, BD
Illusions-Persistance phantasm i forget, MtD, MoF

I run Staff and sword/sword. My utilities are Ether Feast, Arcane Thievery, Null Field, Blink. My amulet is Marauder, im using runes of the pack and sigils of energy and blood on each weapon. Im usually kinda tankish with Chaos Storm and lots of Chaos armor upkeep but i do decent dmg.

What the hell am i running?

Power Shatter with neutered burst.

Is that a bad thing? Normally i can sustain myself enough in a capture point.

I was half-joking. You’re playing Power Shatter that trades burst for personal defence. That’s absolutely fine.

In higher level play though Mesmers are brought primarily for two things: maximum burst and Portal. To achieve maximum burst you need GS and Domination.

Is there anyway i can implement burst and defense? Or it has to be one or the other?

Pretty much one or the other, although people like to take PU in Chaos for defence through stealth. Blinding Dissipation is also pretty great for mitigating damage.

Some people also like Inspiration instead of Chaos for great condition cleansing and healing.

Well, that’s what you have :P

If you’re asking “can I have the best burst and the best defense”, then of course not, because anytime you can trade off power for defense or vice versa, then the “best” will be the one that goes all-out.

A thought.

Illusions isn’t doing too much for you defence-wise (other than slightly lowered CDs for Diversion and Distortion and maybe AoE Diversion), and offence-wise you might get more out of going Domination with Mental Anguish, Shattered Concentration and either Confounding Suggestions or Empowered Illusions.

If you want a proper burst you’ll need to fit GS in there somehow, since Staff is the better defensive weapon I’d drop Sword-Sword. Then take Blinding Dissipation for more defence.

Isnt that basically the meta? Ehhhhhhh, ill try it out but ill see if i can add my own twist to it. Thanks much luv

Well the meta is the meta for a reason. It’s not an arbitrary “this is what everyone should run”, it’s a lot of theorycrafters spending time with different builds until they eventually all arrive at the same few “optimal” builds.

For the Mesmer it’s all about the best burst possible, and there’s not too many ways you can go about achieving that.

You’re running a non-meta, power build. It’s not even really “non-meta”, it might be more accurate to call it “home brew”. It has no particular strong synergy of weapons, traits, healing, or utilites. While it has sahtters, and your shatters are your main source of burst, it’s not necessarily a “shatter build”.

So there you go, you’re running nothing at all. It’s entirely your own twist, or your own twisted abomination, depending on who you ask.
