of course you can also try play greatsword and staff but i just feel like other classes can fit the role of the build better

Your build is irrelevant as a Mesmer in tpvp.
You are a portalbot and little else.

Playing well, a mes is still serviceable in tpvp, but for every other role outside of ports Mesmer gets outdone by other professions.

So ‘viable’ I guess but not optimal.

Here’s my thing, and this is a true and honest question..

Besides Guardian, what roles do the other classes play? What exactly do you expect from a Thief or Warrior on your team? What exactly is it that Thieves do better than us? These questions are never very clearly answered, so it’s really hard to say exactly what other classes do better than us.

Watching Sensotix’s videos, it doesn’t seem like we’re all that far behind the other classes. For example, in the lockdown build I run the only class I have problems with are Engineers. Everyone else is no real issue and I still provide team support via boon removal and a constant Weakness/Vuln application. I’ve been able to run Null Field/Arcane Thievery/Signet (Occasionally swapping for portals or Illusion of Life) with Sword+Focus/Staff and remain effective and useful.

Maybe I’m just really stubborn but I don’t exactly see what’s keeping us “unviable.” Hell, Conditions are going to be getting shaved soon anyways. (Then again, Dat Anet promise.. =/ )

Mesmer is not much use anywhere tbh. Portal and veil bot is all. Anything else is better done with another class.

Mesmer is viable because of the fact we are so versatile and can fill in the gaps especially in solo que matchs. We are like the icing on the cake and the gap filler at the same time. We can 1v1 well, good praticed mesmers can survive and we are a mobile class (blink decoy etc )

Whether or not Mesmers are viable in tpvp depends on the skill of the player giving you the answer. Typically, if they’re lacking in skill then they’ll say mesmers are not viable. If they’re not lacking, then you’ll often hear success from them.

In other words, make sure you’re using a viable build, and practice with it in hotjoin/solo queue/mist npcs.

Every profession has only a few viable builds and have things they excel at. Necros with Condis, Eles with super quick burst, Warriors with condi defense (dat Berserker stance)

Those examples are debatable of course, as is anything, but suffice to say that every profession is viable. With a PU clone death condi build, shatter build and lockdown build I honestly haven’t been meant with many signs that Mesmer is having any trouble, despite the fact they have questionable condi removal.

Gave up bothering and worrying since early spring, and been losing interest since late December last year.

Team Queue it can be viable IF you have a good team to work with!

With a Mesmer you can semi roam and carry team fights pretty well. With the ability to 1v1 anything other than a ranger you can roam pretty easily. (you can get necros if your in a clearly advantages position) and making sure your positioning is right so your not just instantly melted in a team fight is a must if your going to be bringing your damage to it. (horay for splash damage mind mobs of DOOOOOM)

But kinda falls off when you look at all the condi everywhere, they are just to strong when your glass even running a remover. You can escape the stun chain better than most classes but it’s just spammy trash right now it’s over all uninteresting.

Solo Queue

Lol I wouldn’t bother unless your gonna be a roam hero and carry your team by taking points solo and jumping into advantageous fights not taking kitten from anyone on your team or theirs (YOLO QUEUE!!!), but then you might as well insta gib with a thief. You’ll be faster both roam and downing people… But you can’t hold a point as well.

IMO I’d say it’s viable but not worth the effort.

You can run Sensotix’s build but your prob gonna be spending a lot of time running away invis if you don’t position properly. Kinda feels like the half way point between where thief is now, and where warrior used to be before buffs.

I agree with alasteir here. Skill of the mesmer class is what will tell you how viable mesmer is. I mean, I still play shatter and I do really well with it because I practiced shatter for a while. Same with my interuppt mesmer. If you think like your opponent and predict him this spec will shine. The only spec I have lost to 1v1 a lot more than others are spirit rangers, since they are so spammy with fast attacks, I can’t interuppt them and die

I keep seeing people saying things like “not viable, other classes do it better” Do what?! Nobody ever seems to actually articulate their dribbling responses.

Memser’s are pretty glassy, but I’ve found them to be pretty good.

From what I gather, in a team you will have support, Bunker, roamer, dps and control as possible roles. In terms of support and bunker, I think other classes really do outshine the Mesmer. For roaming, this is arguable, I think mesmers are on par with thieves. I think thieves might have the advantage in mobility but we have portal. In terms of providing DPS, mesmers are fairly good. And control? We’re definitely one of the best classes for that.

I think the biggest problem is people like to think “more difficult than others” means “unviable.” If something is harder for Mesmer, but we can still effectively fill the role AND contribute something unique to teams, then we’re completely viable.

I’m just glad all the flavor-of-the-month Mesmer have moved on.

pretty much this, although in tpvp its not as bad as it is in wvw. what gaps do we fill? veil and portal. we are a light armor with no aoe if u got no clones(which happens in wvw all the time. clones and phantasms die wayy to quick) the nerfbat has hit us so hard, that all we are atm is either a veil bot or a 1v1 duel class. every other class is doing better atm.

1v1 according to very good players (not me but see opinion of Sensotix / Xeph / Lord Helseth ) mesmers are dominated by thiefes (at least).

yeah well thieves do need a heavy rework too……too much stealth, so anet hasto buff certain parts about thieves first in order to nerf the stealth abuse. as a mesmer its pretty tough to hit something that is invisible as almost everything requires a target… so yep i agree
