With the new patch in 10/15 mantra support may become viable.
You can actually make a decent healer, but just spamming heals is not recommended.
All you realy need is 20 inspiration and mantra of pain and recovery.
It scales horribly with healing power, so you dont have to change gear if you just want to add healing to your normal build.
The Chaos Maestro in the post above is also one of the best boon support guides out there, go try it!

In general, “support” for the mesmer isn’t so much healing as it is putting up projectile-safe zones so the party can just focus on DPS. I never play COE or Arah without a mesmer (usually I do it myself cause I don’t trust pug mesmers) simply because having that reflect spam makes everything infinitely easier.
( List of Support Builds)
Mesmer have a lot of different ways to support, including the ones you specified.
Boon Support
Our boon support is easily some of the best. Grab a staff + sword/focus, 6x runes of altruism, and atleast 15 points in Inspiration (III), atleast 50% boon duration, Signet of Inspiration and you’re set to be sharing perma Retal/Swiftness/Vigor/Might/Regeneration while maintaining high uptimes of Fury (Grab Veil and Prismatic Understanding for Protection). You can boon share with any gear, from Zerker to Cleric’s.
- Control
Mesmer have a whole traitline dedicated to shutting down opponents. Some of the best support we have is damage prevention in the form of CC. Focus can be a great tool for controling enemies and you can trait your clones to cause conditions likeCripple/Weakness/Vuln when destroyed. Some examples include:
Reflects- Nullfield / traited Focus (Inspiration VIII)
Boon Removal- Shattered Concentration (Dom VII), Null Field
Condition Removal- Null Field, Illusionary Warlock
Damage Mitigation- Illusionary Defender
- Heals
Mesmer can heal, and do so especially well in WvW but it’s a difficult learning process. Mantras can heal allies when traited (Inspiration X) but the radius is short and the heal procs when you complete the charge. If you’re going to heal, learn to charge Mantra of Pain > Mantra of Recovery > Mantra of Pain for burst heals of 7-9k within 10 seconds.
HOWEVER Even this is barely enough to keep up in such a fast-paced environement. You have to compound your heals with other forms of defense/protection such as Veil, Mass Invisibility/Chaos Storm, and most importantly REGENERATION. If you’re in full Cleric’s, Regeneration + mantra heals can AoE heal for over 10k in 10 seconds…
- Low HP: Thieves, Guardians Elementalists (Your heals work great and can save from death)
- Medium HP: Mesmer, Engineer, Rangers (Heals are decent for keeping them topped off.)
- High HP: Warriors, Necros (Don’t bother.)
As for your trait setup.. You don’t really need anything from the Illusions line. I’d slide those points into Chaos / Dueling.
Inspiration- Consider Medic’s Feedback (I), Warden’s Feedback (VIII), or Vigorous Revelations (III)
Chaos- Bountiful Interruption (VIII – EXCELLENT for boon support builds), Debilitating Dissipation (V, the potential for AoE weakness is great.)
Dueling- Phantasmal Fury, Protected Mantras.
(All of the above info can be found in the Chaos Maestro guide.)

I support my teammates by culling the opposition.
Seriously speaking, every class has ways to support and ways to dps. For mesmer, their support role is primarily in reflection and interrupts. I don’t put heals into that category for spvp because Resorative Mantras is a burst once your mantra recharge completes. This means that to be certain to heal our allies you would need to run into the middle of a fight while recharging your mantras… which is a bad idea. Put another way, play to your class’s strengths.

You can actually manage mantra healing in combat pretty decently depending on weapon setup.. and you don’t have to be in the middle of the fight.
For example .. Sword/Focus – Staff with MoPain, Veil, and Signet (assuming you have PU). Distortion,Temporal Curtain, stealth, Phase Retreat and Chaos Storm can all cover you while channeling heals. Of course, its also much easier with an organized team.

However I just tested out the Restorative Mantra trait (X in inspiration) which is supposed to heal your allies whenever you cast a mantra and it didn’t put out any heals to my allies. Is this trait bugged by chance, or am I possibly not understanding its uses?
Not so much not understanding as that the description is terrible. It should say “heal allies at the end of charging a mantra” instead of the “heal allies when you cast a mantra” that it currently says.
Oh and also note you won’t see any heals on allies that have full health. Also the range is around 600.

What gear would you say is best with this? I have full sets of pwr/pre/crit, vit/tough/cond and pwr/tough/vit. Any of these good or is there something even better?
This a good build for me to take into fractals? Just starting there finally.
Cheers
There is no armor requirement to boonshare. If you’re fine with zerkers, or anything else, then by all means go ahead.
(I haven’t had the chance to do high level fractals, but I hear you may as well go Zerk because, from what I hear, dodging is going to be saving you mostly. That being said, make sure you grab reflects (either traited focus or feedback) as well)

It depends on what kind of support you want to dish out however for a PvE support mesmer signet of inspiration is pretty much a requirement. In PvE my build can do kitten of protection and regen. Prismatic understanding can also apply self Aegis more often than a guardian add this in with retaliatory shield you and your entire party are running around dungeons with some of the best boons in the game.

When I run gWvW I use Chaos’s build and I usually run Clerics armor as it beefs up your heals to maximum levels. But that is just personal preference
In high level (48) fractals i run 10/10/20/30, with a full cleric set with altruism and a berserker/knight with traveler.
For trash groups I use clerics clothes and berserker trinkets, i try not to shatter my wardens and warlocks, because most professions already have perma vigor. Damage from the warden and sword is pretty good, and you still get 200-250ish heals.
Sometimes support just isnt usefull, so i swap the staff with a greatsword and damage gear.
Like in certain boss fights where you have to split up, or die in aoe. Supplying 1 or 2 with boons is just a waste :P. I still use mantra healing, which heals 2700 with 300 healing power.
Mantra heals are spammable, so it will keep decent teams at 100% most of the time.
:D

Lyssa’s Grimoire – a guide every Mesmer should read.
This is my full support/healer/tank mesmer. Warning, this is looooong.
Weapons and Gear:
Nomad’s Staff ( Vitality, Toughness, Healing Power) with Sigil of Water and sigil of Strength. This provides me with an aoe heal about once every 5 seconds as I’m pretty sure Illusions can proc it, I also gain a stack of might on crits to help with dealing some damage and to add to the might stacking of the staff auto.
I use Giver’s Armor with Runes of theWater for self condition removal and a party wide heal when I use mine, also more boon duration and healing power. I take Soldier stats for one earring and my back piece and leave the rest as Giver’s with sapphire jewels on all of them.
For Utility Skills I take Mantra of Recovery, Mantra of Pain, Mantra of Resolve, Phantasmal Defender for added tankiness and Time Warp for a nice group DPS buff and to help with Mantra charging in the middle of fights
Stats:
1094 Power (Without the constant might stacking) , 3116 Armor, 20022 Health, 9% Crit chance (29% most of the time) 1177 Healing Power, 60% boon duration, 220 Condition Damage
Traits:
2 in Duelling with VI for lower cool-downs on Mantras and the possibility of 80% Vigor uptime.
6 in Chaos with IV, X and XIII for 16 seconds of regen when I drop to 75%, Protection along with that, 9% less damage with my Illusions up, better staff, and boons when I use shatters…and also the condition damage thing.
6 in Inspiration with V, X and XI for some help with phantasms and constant party regeneration of 277 health a second. I also heal my party for 2835 whenever I use a mantra and remove up to three conditions when I shatter.
This means that when I use my heal skill, it procs the heal from restorative mantras and the Water Runes on me along with the two charges that heal me up for 3091 health each. Constant regeneration if you’re near my phantasms (277 per sec). Water Sigil proc once per 5 seconds if I’m lucky (572). Water Rune Proc once every ten seconds (1278). Restorative Mantra heal basically whenever you want to sit and channel Mantra of Pain (2835) plus the heal from Mantra of recovery every 8 seconds (6182). Those numbers seem sexy? Real Heals. Taking Signet of Inspiration instead of Mantra of Resolve or Phantasmal Defender makes for some nice boon transfers from sigil of strength, bountiful disillusionment and chaos armor too!
