Is it fair to say you can’t perform well on a Mesmer without heavy use of utility skills?

Yeah, but the same could be said for a couple other classes as well. Elementalist comes to mind.. but I could be wrong there.

Absolutely, whenever people call for a speed boost sigil I always wonder what I could possibly give up.

Blink, Feedback, Null Field and Timewarp are my usually utilities. I could retrait focus skills to get reflection and there are a host of condition removal traits. Timewarp is on such a long cooldown that I sometimes forget I even have it. I shudder to even think about trying to survive without Blink. There’s so much that I use it for. Traveling, getting out of AoEs, stun breaks, positioning, guerrilla tactics, mindgames… I rely on it so much that I have both Manipulation traits slotted. I’ve tried changing my build to see if I could live without it one of them but I ended up going back after a week.

My mesmer is only lvl 32 but I find Engineer to be the most utility-reliant profession. With no weapon swap option, Engis are dependent on kits, which are utilities. It’s sort of a technicality, since the kits are effectively used as weapons but still, they’re utilities.

I use feedback null field and the third keeps changing its either portal or mirror images with either elite( MI or TW). I don’t use blink since i have mesmer phase retreat since i am a staff mesmer mostly. so when roaming in a group in wvw i’m still slow but at least i have staff #2 to help me get away when need be.

My guild requires me to be a portal and veil mesmer. It’s not fun and sometimes I get yelled at. But even when I’m not on my mesmer, I get scolded to go on my mesmer soon enough.

It’s not just glamours too. Shatter mesmers (most of them) rely heavily on Mirror Images, Decoy.

Even my tanky Phantasm build relies on Decoy, Signet of Illusions and Illusionary Defender.

Unless you are running a torch, your only stealth comes from your utility/elite. Blink is almost 100% necessary all the time. Feedback is too good an ability not to bring. The last slot I choose to give up condition removal for stealth (decoy), but that’s usually a personal choice. We really don’t have much wiggle room. I couldn’t even imagine running a mantra mesmer because I’d have to give up those staple abilities. I wish we had 5 utility slots at least :P

Re-bind (or alternative-bind them).
I have my skills set to 1234567890 and alt12345 = 67890. So if I want to heal, I can use Alt+1 or 6. etc etc etc

I rebound my utils to q,e,z,x,c so they’d be near my fingers. works out nicely and I’ve always got blink at the ready.

You can ignore utilities in PvE if you want to be a mediocre damage class…really though, the mesmer utilities are some of the best in the game, don’t know why you wouldn’t use them.

easy fix there… leave your guild. You’re granting them the privilege to use your mesmer on occasion. That they demand you to use him doesn’t sound fun and if it were me I’d leave.

As for glamours in general, they are worthless to trait these days unless you’re running golems. Even then I only temporarily trait it.

I’d say engi is THE utility reliant prof, but mesmers utilities change the entire play style so they’re pretty reliant on them too!!

I tend to run Arcane Thievery, Mimic and Blink, nothing else seems to come close to me.

I’m a new mesmer, but looking at the utilites it seems like there are just a few that are so useful that taking others (while not necessarily weak) isn’t a possibility. Mesmer signets and mantras are pretty great, and a lot of professions would kill to have them. But compared to the glamours and a couple manips, they’re just not as useful. Seems mesmers are almost expected to bring Feedback & Null Field to every dungeon. And in PvP everyone brings Blink and either Decoy or Mirror Images.

defender and disenchanter can be good in boss battles or phantasm builds, and if you make a build around them, some of the signets and mantras can do well pvp.
In wvw you can make great use of blink and portal, as well as null field and feedback.
Even mimic and arcane thievery can be great there, especially if you build for it.

so there are some obvious choices, but the others work well too.
