This was a difficult choice, but I have to go with:

+1 To the Natsu Blackwater build.

I find it to be a really strong and survivable roaming build. It has solid sustained damage and good condition cleansing.
It is fun to play and with Veil, Decoy, The Prestige and mass invisibility is feels very mesmer’ish when adding to the element of confusing your opponent. Most people do have a hard time actually pinpointing you when you are popping in and out of stealth.

On top of that, I love that a killed clone is not a useless clone due to Crippling Dissipation and Debilitating Dissipation.

Not sure if you’re aware of this but you can vote for more than one build. In fact, if you like them all, you can +1 for all of them.

Anyway, thanks for voting.

Hi guys

Today is supposed to be the last day for BotM September contest.
However, regrettably, the contest has received little to none interest and on top of that, I have received no information regarding to Stage 2 tests from the ORB. I don’t know whether they have been discussed, arranged, or done.

I am here to extend the contest until this weekend and if I still receive nothing from the ORB members I will proceed to award the winning team based on the popularity votes only.

In the meantime, I welcome your continued support so that we can see this contest to the end.

Cheers

PS: With this extension, there will be no BotM contest event for October and it is unclear another one could/should be done for November, at least until we can muster an adequate amount of interest and support from our guild members.

+1 to the Blackwater Build. I found it was a complete build that needed no tinkering, it was a great solid condi build that is used by advanced and new mesmer alike. That being said it also served as a basis for so many other viable builds out there.
Great work Natsu.

Hey, I don’t know how it slipped my mind to post here, but that’s what happens when you have the attention-span of a goldfish.

Anyways, just wanted to give a heads-up that the ORB is definitely still testing builds and deciding on a ranking system. Right now we’ve been tossing around ideas on how to rank ranging on based off Survivability/Damage/Control/Support or more likely how the build performs in PvE/PvP/WvW.

I can’t speak for Pyro and Fay, but I know that since school hit a lot of people have been sidetracked and really busy, including Pyro for sure, so the extension is actually a bit of a boon for us too. I’ll be starting up classes in late October, so the only things really holding me back are family issues that are slowly getting better day-by-day, and this ridiculous work-out bet I have going with my brother (whoever is less ripped by November gets smacked in their face on youtube and has to pay the winner $100… Dat motivation!) so I’ve been more heavily focused on martial arts.

I didn’t get to do as much testing as I liked this weekend cuz I was focused on mastering Mind Crush, but I’ve been working on it this week, taking notes (yes I have a little GW2 pad and actively take notes, ’cuz the more work you put into something the better the result) and will definitely have thorough reviews of the builds by the deadline.

Edit: @keenlam – Btw, with this thread you’ve brought something to the forums that people are curious about, interested in, and excited to see the results. Even if the voting turnout isn’t as large as you’d imagined this is still something that’s brought the community together a bit more and encouraged people to try out new styles. People are looking forward to entering the November contest, and I definitely think we should have another one.

@ Chaos: thanks for the update. Sounds like we guys have been working on a standard testing framework and thus the Stage 2 tests for this event is still in conception stage. However, I really appreciate your continuing work on this, with a standard framework to test builds, this can be used easily and quickly for future contests.

I myself will probably make some changes in the next contest regarding how the build can be evaluated closely but easily, maybe some alternative mean to the current in-game tests we have at the moment. I’ll keep u guys posted.

@ WitchKing: thanks for voting.

Wanted to squeeze this in earlier but today at work I was actually… Working. /gasp

KAAMAU’S EVASIVE SIGNETS
This was the build I was most eager to get my hands on and try out, its not often someone feels confident enough about a signet build to submit it into a contest versus more traditional setups. I’ll be honest, I groaned when I saw the traits at first, since so many signet choices battle against powerful traits like Deceptive Evasion, Mental Torment, and Empowered Illusions. I could already tell I was in for a unique, albiet difficult experience.

Unique, I think, is the perfect word to describe signet builds on a Mesmer; they’re very rarely made for good reason. In my experience, Evasive Signets is easily one of the most unique builds I’ve seen in a while and it’s very easy to look at it and go “That? Yeah, that’ll never work…” but it turns out, it actually kinda does. The build has much better defenses than your average Mesmer, even if you go full Zerker. The Melandru runes combined with sigils actually do some decent work at combating condition damage. Pistol, staff, and Signet of Midnight/Domination go together very well to offer an above-average amount of enemy control / Staff and Signet of Inspiration always do work together / and Staff(Phase Retreat) with Signet of Midnight make a fairly good defense, though not quite up to Blink&Decoy caliber. It goes without saying that Evasive Signets has a higher-than-average skill cap and someone could easily spend several weeks learning the ins and outs of the build. (You should see Kaamau in action with it. I underestimated him and got smacked up for it. =[ )

The problem I had with this build is that, for all its interesting points, it didn’t really stand out as ideal for any particular role. I was in PvP with a big grin on my face at how cool all the distortion and signet play was, happy for the boonshare and lockdown, and felt like a boss being so survivable but… I was essentially just running in circles feeling myself. Anything I could do with this build, I felt that another build could likely do better, and the unique/coolness of the build couldn’t do much to change that.

SENSOTIX’S BOUNTIFUL INTERRUPTION
Sensotix, real talk, I had my reservations about this build. It wasn’t that I didn’t think it was good, I knew it was good before even picking it up, but it was because of how you had seemed to contradict yourself with it’s conception. When I had first published Mind Crush (though it was still conceptual at the time) -even though I specifically mentioned that the build would take a few days to really grasp since the style was so different and lockdown builds weren’t really explored- you had tried it for about an hour before detailing it as unviable because of Arcane Thievery not being enough condition removal, lack of Illusionary Persona (you said Decoy mitigated the need for IP, but didn’t have Decoy in this build either), and the fact that it was missing either Portal or Illusion of Life.

Then, lo’ and behold, Sensotix’s Bountiful Interruption build appears! Complete with everything you said wouldn’t work.

So my first reaction was, of course “Wow, this guy … -_-” since the build seemed rather derivative from concepts skcamow and myself were working on. But I didn’t want to go into judging the build with such a jaded mindset because I wanted to be as fair and impartial as possible, so please keep that in mind for what I’m about to write…

This. Build. Rocks.

It rocks so hard dude. It was easy for me to pick up since it was similar to concepts I’ve explored before (boonshare, lockdown) and its trait distribution makes it a powerful phantasm build even without the boonshare/lockdown. But with it? Everything comes together so well that you could easily use this build in PvE or WvW (Great for small groups, terribad for Zergs though) even though it wasn’t made with those venues in mind. It was my favorite build to play of the bunch because I felt like I both did good damage AND was valuable to my team with my lockdown (definitely gained respect for Chaotic Interruption here) and boonshare (With this Warrior Meta, stealing their Elite Signet and giving it to my team is glorious). This build had actually got the highest score from the judges, but was beaten by popular vote. #Dat Democracy.

Only problem? Squishy as hell. Once you get focused, Greatsword doesn’t offer enough defense and untraited Blink isn’t enough of a disengage in many cases.

NATSU’S BLACKWATER MESMER
Creative name, powerful build with high amounts of control… What more can I say? The Blackwater build is one of the most survivable Mesmer templates that one can take, easily capable taking on 4+ opponents on it’s in WvW. Matter of fact, the build is SO good that people have started to hate on it just to be different from the crowd. Its a spec that’s easy to pick up and easy to succeed with.

… But I hate condition builds. The transition from direct damage to condition damage was actually rather jarring. Suddenly all of my usual tactics don’t work, most of my damage is automatic rather than manual, and I felt as if all control was taken out of my hands and given to my clones. For PvE, Blackwater falls behind the other two builds in effectiveness as both condition damage and stealths take up trait/skill slots better placed elsewhere. In sPvP I didn’t have the overpowered perplexity runes and couldn’t hold a point because of stealths, and often I saw my conditions getting cleansed faster than I could apply them in group fights (clones running every-which-way/twittering/taking bathroom breaks/becoming oddly self-aware)

I’d run this build in WvW in a heartbeat… not so much anywhere else.

Anyways, being a judge was great fun and got to broaden my Mesmer-horizons with trying out different builds. I personally believe that it takes about a week to really sync with a build and lean its ins-and-outs even though builds can be easy (blackwater) medium (sensotix) or difficult (signets) to learn. Great job to the contestants and definitely looking forward to the next contest!*

Edit: Btw Keenlam, maybe you should have some kind of big *RESULTS in the thread title so people know the contest is ended and to check the scores.

To add my own impressions:

Evasive Signets

This build was definitely better than I thought it would be. I will agree with Chaos though in that it’s the most unique of the bunch. It actually has a very good amount of survivability and pretty good effectiveness in dueling. In PvE, however, it simply doesn’t do enough damage due to gear and traiting choices to be an optimal build. In WvW it does pretty well, but loses a bit of effectiveness in zerg fighting due to limited aoe options. In PvP, it does things decently, but the problem is that it fulfills no specific role. In PvP, every person on a team is taken for something specific that they can do, and this build doesn’t have anything that fits.

Bountiful Interruption

This build, although I’m highly biased against interrupt based builds, actually is pretty good. It has the best damage of the 3 builds, and so is the most effective in PvE because of it. In PvP, it does really well with aoe control and boon support for the party, while supplying pretty strong damage. The greatsword knockback combined with chaotic interruption actually provides some interestingly strong utility for decapping points. In WvW, it does quite well in small fights, but any strong solo roaming build will eat it, and it loses effectiveness in zerg fights due to it’s fragility and lack of strong aoe damage at range.

Blackwater Conditions

This build is the weakest in PvE of the three due to the fact that it’s condition based, among other reasons. No surprises here really. In PvP, it’s actually surprisingly strong, but you have to play it right. You use it as a highly offensive aoe condition pressure build as a mid point attacker. It combos very well with a necro if they are able to spread the torment, and just makes it very hard to stay on a point, since staying on a point means getting hit with all the clone explosions. In WvW, it’s incredibly strong. There are very few builds that can beat it in a 1v1 fight, making it an incredible solo roamer, as well as it being extremely surivivable and capable of taking on 5-10 or more people at the same time with smart play. It transitions smoothly into group fights, fulfilling a similar role as in PvP with the aoe condition pressure, and then can be easily modified with a couple trait and utility swaps into an effective zerg build. An all around incredible WvW choice.

Perhaps I’m not seeing it, but the build linked in the first link you gave is absolutely nothing like the blackwater build. It’s not even remotely similar. The second link you gave is in a private forum, aka useless.

I kind of agree with this to be honest, espesh when it’s something as general as a Prismatic spec or something geared completely into interrupts.
