"Phat Burst" Confusion Build - WvW/PvE
Well, it’s an interesting idea, but like all confusion bomb builds, is ultimately defeated by the most simple of playstyle choices: Not attacking.
This is most obvious when watching the fight with the guardian. You are unable to kill him, because after the first few seconds of the fight, he just stops attacking. He lets the confusion wear off, or cleanses it, and so you are generally unable to hurt him.
This build, unfortunately, will always be a noob-stomping build, and not much else. Some people will gladly suicide on confusion, but any competent player will counter it with ease.
I can’t disagree with Pyroatheist more. Though despite the fighting style, I don’t think your trait line-up is optimal.
Take the aforementioned guardian problem for example. Yes, he stopped attacking and cleansed the confusion. But he took a ton of damage before that, and not only burned his cleanses but his heals as well. You did that with your sceptre/torch/utilities, but have the staff as part of your build for good reason. At that point, with the guardian on the back foot, a simple swap to it, putting up clones for bleeds/burning, with a chain of chaos armours, coupled with blind on confuse will quickly eat away at the guardians health pool. The problem in the video wasnt that the guardian was competent, rather that you weren’t. A little more experience and you’ll find your build can do what the naysayers say it cannot.
Ive been running sceptre/torch since release. Only character i’ve played. It busts noobs and competent players alike.
I agree with both pryo/ross but at the same time I’m a big fan of this build since I posted something very, very similar in the below thread (linked) which is more daze focused – uses Imbued Diversion instead of IP. Now since that posting I have been refining it and have come to a 10/30/0/0/30 build using Scepter/Pistol and Staff which seems to be rocking much better using a hybrid of Rabid/Carrion gear (vs all Carrion).
My OP: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/mesmer/Build-Dazed-and-Confused/first#post1697979
The lack of damage issue pyro brought up I agree with since I ran into the same problem but have found it can be somewhat mitigated by extra damage being done by the pistol phantasm and constant confusion applications via the various blinds and also the projectile combos. They can cleanse but they can’t perma-cleanse, right? :-)
That being said, I also agree with what Ross said in that if you’re a competent enough player you could do and apparently are doing well with the build so I’d love to see more. I loved watching your video – keep it up!
Edit: Also would like to know your gear setup and food. Assuming you’re all rabid by the condi-damage but if you could share that would be great.

@Pyro – The think is with your target not attacking is that you are still dishing out damage. It may not be a whole lot, yes, but you will still force your target to have to do something. By keep confusion up, even through cleanses, you will be able to down them. I think the guardian I fought in the video is a bad example, I did end up getting him, but with all those other enemies there, I should have left him last.
@Ross – Thanks for your suggestions. I admit I didn’t react very well to the guardian fight, but that’s is why I included it, to get some feedback.
@skcamow -Your build looks interesting also, I might give it a try. It is very similar to mine. As regards to armor I’m wearing 4/6 Rabid Gear 2/6 Carrion. I run a mix of carrion and rapid in my trinkets. I use Giver’s weapon’s for the increase in duration and for food I use Master Tuning Crystal and Rare Veggie Pizza.
I’d like to point out that to make confusion reliable, sticking to the target is essential.
check ollonais’ vid here I think he is running something somewhat similar. (with 10 dom, 10 ins for III Vigorous Revelation: vigor on shatter)
