I know portal is good for zergs in WvW. I know its great to help with annoying jumping puzzles and Citadel of Flame part 1.

I was more curious if anyone uses it beyond for these things? I’ve heard mention of its uses in sPvP, and I could definitely see that, but I’m curious of the experiences other Mesmers have had creatively using this skill?

What are your best portal moments?

Mainly I’ve used it to get my party through nasty places in dungeons that I can get through, but they can’t. Other than that though, I don’t use it a lot in pve.

Several places in Arah are like that. One of the paths of cm where you have to place bombs by a gate, it is infinitely easier if you can portal people right to the gate with 0 aggro.

i use it to fight people one on one, portaling from one side to another is fun, confuses the hell out of people then if you have blink you still ave a back up

If you’re skipping mobs in TA its great for helping people who got left behind.

Best portal moment – Portal bombing a group of 30 with like 12 and getting wiped because the portal was poorly placed (WvW).

Yeah, it’s a godsend in Swamp Fractals. I find it easier to drop the portal in the base and then run to an essence. (I’ve had some people request that I drop it in the middle of the map so people can run to it while I run to base, but sometimes they can’t get to the map marker because of obstacles.)

Outside of portal bombing in WvW, I also use it often for supply runs.

Arah (part ?)
Caudecus Manor (Part ?)
Twilight Arbor (Part ?)
Fractals (Swamp)

And people use portal in general combat? Interesting. So portal can actually sit in your bar and not be switched to simply for situational use? How does it perform offensively in a Glamour build?

I found that it was relatively helpful when fighting the boss in TA Story Mode with the spider adds. I mean, if you have a group that knows how to circle kite well, then it’s not really an issue, but if you’re like me and end up in a pug where half your group is dead in the first few seconds, then it’s pretty handy to give you some extra time where you’re not kiting to drop time warp or something like that.

Back when the farmers were rampant portal had some excellent trolling uses. Since most of them are afk/macro’d spamming their “use” key portal becomes a tool to send them to….less friendly places.

All of the above are great ways to utilise Portal. I’d like to add another:

Portal is a Glamour. Providing that one doesn’t use the ‘Exeunt’ part of it, it’s a Glamour that you can place for 60 seconds (or more if you use the Temporal Enchanter trait.)

Now, if you also trait for Confusing Enchantments / Dazzling Glamours, and just stand in the Portal, you can confuse/blind anyone that comes towards you or your group. Great if you want to go melee and like that added survivability.

You can also place a Portal at choke points and pull enemies through it, confusing and blinding them on the way. Really wrecks their opening salvo.

You can do all this for 60 seconds and – providing you didn’t use the ‘Exeunt’ part of the skill – you can start it all again 30 seconds later (earlier if traited with Glamour Mastery!)

Ohh man, I love the creativity in these replies. I never even thought of fighting ontop of a portal.
That means that itd also be atleast slightly effective in protecting stationary NPCs like Magg? (Or whatever the “Boom in my Kaboomium” Asura’s name is)

Portal bombing is a thing of the past. Its still very useful for supply runs in WvW. The cliff towers you can portal a mob of people back up to the tower with supply so they don’t have to run around on the ramps.
It’s also a great escape tool. I can’t count how many times it’s saved me in WvW while solo roaming. Get in over your head and drops a portal lead people away and port back to create some distance. My favorite is dropping it at the top of a cliff while running from a small group. Run ahead a bit and drop down. Usually some will follow but not all. Portal back up and kill the ones that stayed at the top while their friends can’t get there to help.

I’ve used it a lot in fractals when they first came out. Haven’t done them for a long time so they might have changed. The one you carry the hammer that gives you a debuff it came in handy many times. Porting people up past the wind part.

Portals is a key utility in my roaming build and for smal group fihting. Enjoy some moves you can do if you experement with portal:

They’ve fixed that with the january patch, so it should be impossible to do that now. Quote: “Loot interactions now take higher priority than mesmer portals.”

Wrong; it still gets used A LOT. Maybe it will get used a bit less once culling is fixed; but at least now, you can still see it very often.

Love using portal as an offensive/defensive skill in WvW. With my glamour build + my focus i can control them as i keep alot of confusion on them. That and nothing funnier than placing two portals near each other, throwing down #4 skill on focus, detonate it and pull the enemy through both glamour fields as you stack confusion on them so many fun things you can do with it

It’s single best use is probably telestomping the enemy.
