The above link is a great read for anyone who plays PvP on all levels, from beginner to experienced there is something to learn here.

Say what you will about Helseth, but fact is he just went extra hard with this excellent AMA.

Some snips to get ya going…

  • Imagine you have to start over from the bottom of the competitive scene. You just purchased GW2, watched TCG destroy WTSIQ, and now you want to play at that level. After setting up keybinds, learning the mechanics and rotations, and grinding a few thousand games to place high on this kittened up leaderboard, what steps would you take to make a name for yourself within the competitive community? For example, what tournaments would you play in, and how would you prepare for them? Would you lead your own team, or try to join a preexisting one? Would you main only one profession still, or perhaps multiclass more? If so, what professions are most desirable (or lacking) in the high-end? In other words, what advice do you have for players trying to progress beyond serfdom?

I recommend the popular duel servers. If you can play a meta class and dominate the server people will start asking you to start playing with you.

With the exception of the first 2 months in the game every single team I’ve played with I’ve been the leader of. At this point I can’t picture joining a team without taking such a role.

Multiclassing is good but only if you can play the classes on a strong enough level to be relevant. Most of the top tier multiclassers also have a main which they’re arguably the best player on. That’s much better than a multiclasser who is just above average on every class

  • The single best thing (or set of things) I can do to improve as a Mesmer player? I apologize if that question is too simple.

That depends on what you aspire to reach so it’s hard to answer.

I’ll say this though, unless you’re at the top percentage of players your’e most likely at a levle where you should be able to 1v1 every single profession as a shatter mesmer provided that you outplay them enough. So if your focus is on improving grab a buddy at your level with a class you think you cant beat and just spam duels vs him.
Mesmer is known for being one of the weakest on node fighters in 1v1. But if you practice hard enough you’ll be able to 1v1 most players as it which requires far more practice for you than it does for them, elevating your skill level.

  • Are you satisfied with mesmer in the meta? Is there anything about it you wish was better? Or a utility skill/weapon set you wish was competitively viable?

The only thing I’d like to have changed from a mesmers perspective is the amount of bugs we have to suffer through in a competitive game. Immobilize mid air being the worst offender.

  • Double Helseth question: How BS is theif not unstealthing on stealth attack if it connects but something stops it (blind/aegis/block/evade) and how BS is Moa morphing from stealth thus purging enemy transforms instead of overwriting them for a time (and canceling some skills being cast by the enemy) by comparison?

If thief attacks revealed whenever they hit in stealth it would ruin a lot of ideas such as heartseeker in stealth for movement along with many other things. I dislike the fact that you can remove aegis while in stealth though.

I think that moa needs to be as strong as it is for mesmer to be viable on the competitive level right now. Considering we have essentially no counters to lich and rampage it’s nice to see that we still have an option.

Regarding tranformations and moa: why the hell does vampirism remove the moa form effect

Favorite part:

  • “What’s the best GW2 pickup line?”

“Gurl.. Guuurll. You’ll think I’m a power Necro with how ridiculous I am when I go down”
