Sword/Sword.
Staff + Sw/Sw is the usual weapon set people use for lockdown builds. They are really, really hard to play, extreme risk, extreme reward.
I tried it out, tons of fun interrupting heals and various skills and seeing people rage/get damage from it). The one I used was the following:

Well, Sw/Sw does have incredibly low cooldown and good illusion generation, if double traited (blade training + IC).
But yeah, as you said – pistol and torch offer better utility.

Tried that sort of build with the power block new trait. Why not using the pistol OH?

You can if you want, but iSwordsman hits harder and all of its damage is immediate, and not spread out. The Pistol interrupt has a bigger cooldown than the Sword OH interrupt if I do recall, and in a Lockdown build the more dazes/stuns you have access to, the better. But go ahead and try it; better to see for yourself what works for you than to take the advice of others at face value.

One more thing i’d like to ask if you may, would you replace confounding suggestions for power block? and would you take another sigil of paralyze to staff 2nd sigil slot?
I used to run Sword/Sword, however I also switched back to Sword/Pistol.
If the sword block would be usefull vs. backstabs, probably every Mesmer would run /sword.
However, as it isn’t /Pistol just seems better, as the Stun it provides seems better like /swords daze
The pistol is just way better bc of that stun. It can lead to some nasty damage combos/1shots

All of this talking down on the sword! Eff you guys!
The sword has a couple of advantages over the pistol and other offhands:
- Low cooldown daze. The daze projectile is piercing and thus hits all targets in its path. If that’s not good enough, you can use this 3 times more often than the pistol’s stun.
- Most damaging weaponset. The iSwordsman will almost always outdamage the iDuelist since the pistol phantasm is significantly easier to dodge/LoS. Outside of that, the sword’s counterattack does ridiculous amounts of damage(4k+), making it easily the most damaging 5-skill set when combined with mainhand sword.
The trick to using offhand sword effectively is mastering that counter. It’s difficult and often best saved for AoEs or telegraphed attacks (or when you can distortion to cover it) but it’ll make all the difference.
The pistol’s stun is good for sure, but it’s single target (though it can bounce to daze a second target) and on a much higher cooldown than the swords multi-target daze.

Other thing about this discussion that’s important to consider is the build/traits being used. For example, sword off-hand is better to use IMO than pistol in a 4/4/6 lockdown build using CI and BI due to the pistol stun overwriting the effects of CI. Sword #4 daze orb is excellent for that type of build.
