• Not Shattering I don’t care what build you’re running, learning where and when to pop at LEAST Distortion is crucial. Every build can make effective use of shatters in some way

• Shattering Phantasms I do this sometimes. Hell, we all do. But some people will summon phantasms and shatter them BEFORE shattering their clones. As a general rule always try and shatter clones first and save the Phants for when your shatters are on cooldown… or shatter phants when they’re about 10s from recharging.

• Doing absolutely nothing but kiting with staff The staff is one of our best defensive weapons, sure, but it still hits ridiculously hard. iWarlock can hit for 7k in sPvP! The auto attack does more damage the closer you are to the opponent, and Chaos Armor shouldn’t be popped just because it happens to not be on CD. Look at the staff as a “switch-out” weapon. Chaos Storm, iWarlock, and Chaos Armor are all better suited to be used right before you’re going to swap to your offset. Speaking of which…

• Failing miserably with Chaos Storm So you’re using staff, just Phase Retreated and need some damage.. What do you do? Drop Chaos Storm!? Well don’t expect that to do any sort of anything if your opponent can see you and isn’t preoccupied with something else. Chaos Storm is very easy to avoid and walk around, so you should never just throw it out all willy-nilly. The best times to use Chaos Storm is either defensively on yourself when fighting a melee-opponent, when you can use a combo finisher (preferably a LEAP or BLAST), or when you can swap to sword and immob the opponent. Please don’t just throw it out there and /dance behind it.

• Greatsword: Summon Phantasm and spam your life away I used to think the GS was an uncreative, overly-simplistic weapon. Summon Phant, spam all other skills except iWave, profit. Apparently I’m not the only one.. The GS has quite a few interesting nuances and combos (such as 1200 ranged MirrorBlade+MindSpike+MindWrack bursts) people who don’t take the time to learn these end up over-relying on iZerker for damage.

• Waste Moa As a wiseman once said: “It’s already a 2v1.. why’d you have to turn me into a bird?” Save Moa for even fights and liches/tornados/MM Necros

Exactly this, people are so pigeonholed when they see you running condis = PU. I assume most of the people only play shatter or PU. Also, as you said mesmer offers quite a bit of diversity but you know, its all about the META. I wish people explored more, like the times of Immortal Mesmer, Chillruption, and Mind Crush, its so sad to see the same builds over and over again.

I use Greatsword because it lets me survive. You’re a bad Mesmer and you’re not allowed to tell me that Greatsword is bad because I’m alive and you’re dead so I’m dealing more damage than you. iWave is a skill on my bar, it adds DPS so I should use it whenever possible. I swap to Staff and kite around while mobs aren’t aggroed onto me. This keeps the aggro off of me, as noted by my not taking any damage. If a mob is aggroed onto me, I’ll camp Greatsword and stand still waiting for iWave to get off cooldown, but I might hit the wrong skill and use Mind Stab instead. I like to shatter right as I summon a Phantasm, before it finishes it’s initial strike. I also like to CC bosses that have no Defiance because it interrupts them, even if they’re not casting a skill. I run Blink in every fight, don’t read chat, and drop Feedback and Time Warp when I want to, even if I see a Wall of Reflection/Feedback/Time Warp already up. I trait my Wardens at all times because they get stronker. I only use Wardens when the bosses don’t have projectiles because if they have projectiles, I need to be kiting with my Staff.

Mesmers can’t provide team support through boons or condition remove on allies. We’re a selfish class, so deal with it. You’re wrong because you’re dead.

Gonna start off this thread strong with the most unpopular of posts:

What I hate seeing other mesmer’s do the most…

Play PU – The instant I see a PU mesmer in wvw (which let’s be honest, isn’t exactly a scavenger hunt) I cringe.

Auto with GS in close range – I can’t be the only one who has seen players run closer to their target when in auto? I mean ignoring the fact that you shouldn’t be spamming auto excessively anyway, but does no one notice the range factor?

Cut and Paste – This kinda goes with the build diversity point/creativity, but I’m just tired of every mesmer being a clone (eh? eh?) of every other mesmer. “Oh you have to take this trait, you have to do this to be viable, you HAVE to HAVE to…” For one of the most creative classes I’ve ever seen the players it attracts… are not.

And this last one is my own little pet peeve..

Their names – I am..beyond tired..of walking through any area of the game and seeing the names “Illusions Delusions” and “Illusionary Magee” and “Mizz Illusionzz”. It’s literally the most annoying thing on the planet to me. And it seems to be only mesmer that does it. You see maybe a couple necro’s with death themed named or ele’s with element names, but for every 1 of those I can promise there are 20 illusion named mesmers.

Kill Me – Hands down the thing I hate most to see other mesmers do. I really hate it so much when they do that! :-(

All Signets for utilities - The passive bonuses aren’t even that good.

All Mantras for utilities - Extra damage from equipping a bunch of situational skills? Other classes surpass it by just having full endurance and the right weapons.

Conserving Power Return charges - Why wait 8-10 secs to recharge at low health rather than at full?

Using Mass Invisiblity near death - If they had used it earlier to reposition in their fight they might still be alive.

Using Time Warp on siege weapon - It only works on golems.

Using Illusionary Counter prematurely - It’s awkward seeing them desperately wait for the enemy to attack.

Whoa, whoa whoa whoa…some of us play Asura because they are adorable little rat-creatures who look awesome in outfits. Not all of us play them because they give the advantage of being so small…we just like the master race!

I have like 5 different sets and 3 different types of all mesmer weapons and playing with 3 -4 different builds.Indeed mesmer have a lot of creativty options.

I hate those memsers who pop up izerker only to get a fast clone to shatter…(and the zerker dosnt even hit anyone yet) or PU cond mesmers who pm ,me whenI run away from them saying how much noob I am ..(that last bit is a bit specific xD)

^ Exactly and it doesn’t have have to be a condi build to make use of this. I use a power based , clone /cripple spamming build in open pve to control mobs and enhance wastrels punishment uptime, amongst other things.
Dodge rolling to overwrite clones with 3 illusions up is not a sign of bad play, there might be other intentions at play.

PU Condi Mesmers (staff) that realise they cant win a 1v1 and veil, decoy, mass invis, torch 4 themselves away to the other side of the map. Its great that you have such good in-combat mobility, its bad that you can’t win using the Meta.

Yeah basically lockdown/shatter builds are what to look for when you want skilled play and yes it takes effort to master them. I’ve looked at some of the videos of people playing and they are incredible compared to CPU.

I don’t understand what you get out of wanting a build that going to get melted as bad as our confusion build was back in the day….

I hate seeing a mesmer criticizing another mesmer because they chose to play builds that are too effective.

I hate seeing a mesmer asking for nerfs to the mesmer class.

I hate seeing mesmers calling other mesmers “fair weather” when they don’t continue to play the class after an endless stream of nerfs.

I hate seeing mesmers who say a nerf if fine because it doesn’t affect their build.

I hate seeing mesmers insist that you run a min/max build in dungeons instead of one that’s fun to play.

See, the problem with this isn’t the class, its just with most players in general. You gotta remember that there are a massive amount of immature people who play, regardless of age and/or class.

Besides Guardians, this is the most informative and helpful subforum (hell Thieves just recently created a thief-version of the Grimoire). And the guide I wrote has been copied throughout the internet and translated into Spanish/German/Chinese. Anyone who wanted to improve could very easily find the info they wanted, whether here or YouTube, or even by PMing any one of the regular posters here.

No one is obligated to go in-game and spoonfeed people, especially when all you have to do is a 5-minute search. Granted, people like myself, Calliope, and Warlord tutor people we run into all the time. I literally can’t spectate a Mesmer with a screwed up build without offering advise.

Even when we do provide information, many people are jerks about it.

• Using GS poorly in PvP
  I hate when I see people in PvP litereally just stand there and spam GS AA. They don’t even use any of the other skills….just #1. Sometimes I figure that they are just trying to act like a clone—which is cool I guess for newer players—but when they run out of illusions they still just spam AA. o_o

• Most Mesmers dress very similarly
  I get that we don’t have a lot of choices in the light armor section, but I promise that not every Mesmer has to dress in black/purple cloaks. We look good in other colors too… .-.

• We complain about EVERYTHING
  Nobody can deny this. You hear more complaining out of the Mesmer community more than any other part of the forums. We complain whether we get something good or bad. I get that there have been some bugs, but seriously guys, we’re not paying a subscription so we should be thankful. That really kills a developer’s morale. I’m surprised that Mesmers get any buffs or bug fixes with how we treat the devs lol. Why can’t we all just bake a cake out of happiness and rainbows and eat it together!?

I hate seeing a mesmer criticizing another mesmer because they chose to play builds that are too effective.

I hate seeing a mesmer asking for nerfs to the mesmer class.

I hate seeing mesmers calling other mesmers “fair weather” when they don’t continue to play the class after an endless stream of nerfs.

I hate seeing mesmers who say a nerf if fine because it doesn’t affect their build.

I hate seeing mesmers insist that you run a min/max build in dungeons instead of one that’s fun to play.

Using Time Warp on siege weapon - It only works on golems.

I’m quite sure it works on all channels, including treb, mortar and catapults fire and rotation. It might actually help in very narrow corner cases (eg. destroy a counter treb before it can fire).

There’s only one thing I hate regarding other Mesmers.

• The ease with which our lot turn on one another, RE: patches.
  Fact is, even if we disagree, we all want (I would believe) what’s best for the profession as a whole. This is still my belief, even with the recent Scepter wackiness. As such, some of the rudeness that’s been tossed about lately on this forum rather offends me.

I hate “mesmer experts” that haven’t played in months/years but still feel the need to give their opinions ON EVERY THREAD.

I should also say that I have received some help and that was very good. Still, I play Mesmer for the love of the class despite the regular hammerings and I would really like to be more successful.

With respect to YouTube and Dulify, I have several times heard a new player on map chat say something to the effect “wow, really?” when they were pointed out.

I’m not a dumb person.. I simply hadn’t heard about forums/YouTube/Dulify until I’d already struggled in game for months.

I do maintain that ANET creating a face roll Mesmer style is a direct result of new players not getting help and re rolling to other classes.

I kind of hate the term “expert” or “master” that puts certain players on a pedestal.

Everyone has a right to state their opinion, so saying “You haven’t played in X amount of time so your thoughts on the subject are expired” is no better than saying “You’re too new to the game to give your opinion.”

If a person has solid facts to back up what they’re saying then they have the right to say it.

Are ya on US or EU? I’d be happy to play with ya! And anet didn’t “invent” the PU build, or any build, in response to inexperienced players. I highly doubt they had the foresight to expect the builds we’re currently running so much as they release the traits, see the builds they spawn, and adjust accordingly.
