Nice work! The first video is very good. The supply camp defense early on was fun to watch.

Ah cool, I was curious as to what’s a good gear setup for WvW and your vid helped me discover it.

Interesting variation. I would like to see how well the build holds up in a 1vX vs at least silver rank players.

High Rank does not necessarily mean good skills. Well played Iavra. And still good dmg with this build.

Outmanned can be a Problem because of the not so good chase capabilities.. unless playing GS/Staff, but than you are lacking some defense. Fun to watch.

Any general usage tips for this build? I’ve never really been able to get the hang of GS/Staff. What do I need to know?

First, there is nothing forcing you to use these exact weapons. Staff is amazing because of Phase Retreat and Chaos Storm, but i recommend learning Phase Dashing (About Face -> Phase Retreat -> About Face) for general movement and quick infight ports.

GS is something i feel comfortable with, since i used it in shatter for ages. I like the ranged pressure against basically everything that is not a lb ranger and i want something that allows me to chase people to a certain extent (you still won’t be able to chase a GS warrior, obviously). The tradeoff is that it basically has no defense except #5 and can’t deal with stealthed targets unless the thief roots himself and you are Helseth.

I try to start fights in GS, do some pew pew damage and spawn iZerker. Staff is for defense and kiting purposed (though i can imagine playing GS + Sword/Torch in 4/4/6 for stealth and better cleansing).

Currently i find myself switching between shatter and lockdown almost daily, as i feel i have better condition cleanses and 1vX capabilities in shatter, but lockdown has a better thief matchup and feels more useful in group fights.

How do I go about actually playing though? What combos should I be using? Do I rely a lot on Phantasms? Auto chain?

You probably should rely more on phantasms than i do. I shatter too often and don’t wait for the right time, same with my Mantra usage.

GS auto with fire/air sigils does a lot of damage, so use that to bait out defensive cds, before going in with shatters.

I watched to about 5 minutes in. Or rather, to that FRUCKING GLORIOUS outnumbered fight you dove into like Spartacus.

That was fantastic, and perfectly demonstrated the power of GS/Staff. The one thing I’d advise, if you don’t mind, is to time your Diversion shatters to your summon. Shatter right as you’re summoning the Warlock and you’re more likely to nail the interrupt. Other than that, great stuff man!

I have a few more fights currently waitig to be made into a video (part shatter, part lockdown), but that would be ~9mins, so i rather collect some more. “Sadly” i’m running a lot with Jathres lately and when he is recording i don’t usually do.

I haven’t really played with staff for a while, so you are probably watching an old video from before the patch. Since the trait system has been revamped, those links won’t work anymore.

Also, the influx of PU mesmers and the increased damage make playing stealthless Staff/GS very dangerous and i wouldn’t advise it. As an alternative you could go for a more traditional Staff + Sword/X lockdown or PU + MoP shatter.

That Thief burst at 4:27 was a thing of beauty. Those two mesmers before were just awful.

Obviously they were ^^ I was kinda worried about attacking them, since without PU i basically have no chance against 2 possible PU mesmers. But after the first one died almost instantly everything was fine
