so ive been doing pvp for while now and the only class i constantly have a problem with is mesmers. can’t fuigure out how to beat them. i look for buffs but half the time the clones have the buff to. i’ve try playing mesmer to get a feel for how to beat them but can’t seam to figure out how these mesmers do it cause i get wrecked all the time on mine. anyone have any advise?

We’d be happy to help, but there could be a number of things going on. A few questions for you:

- How long have you played pvp?

- What class/build do you play?

- What kind of Mesmer build did you try to run?

Can guide ya better from there.

If you had a problem with condi PU Mesmer and thus tried it out, the play style is more passive. Against PU, you want to retreat and kill the clones from afar. Laying down AoE can also help catch a mesmer in stealth. If you only have melee at the moment, then you’ll either want a condition cleanser ready or a condition immunity thing for after or while you kill the clones.

I don’t PU a lot[there was once] so I can’t help too much other than this.

As a power ranger you’re going to have some problems. Most Mesmer practically hardcounter power rangers if they’re not caught off guard since a heavy stealth shatter will bring you to near death in an instant. The only way you’re going to win that fight is with practice and experience.

As a warrior, however, you have some wiggle room:

• Mesmer tend to have only 1-2 forms of stealth. When you see them cloak start dropping AoEs either with hammer or longbow. Its worth noting that stealth tends to only last 3 seconds unless they blow all their stealth at once, so often you can count two seconds and dodge.

• Mesmer weapons give away how they will attack you. If you see them with sword then their goal is likely to engage you close-ranged for a quick shatter burst. Scepter usually means condition damage. Staff means defense and kiting. Greatsword means heavy ranged damage and a nasty phantasm you must kill ASAP.

• You’ll likely run into 3 different types of Mesmer: Shatter (super glassy, highly mobile, nasty burst damage) Lockdown (lots of interrupts and immobilizes, not as much instant damage but still high damage) or condition ( durable and attrition-focused. Will wear you down)

• Mesmer have somewhat predictable defenses. 1-2 teleports, 1-2 stealths, and distortion (f4). On average you can expect 2 stunbreaks and lousy condition removal.

• Count their dodges! It takes 10 seconds for a dodge to recharge, 5 with vigor, if your opponent spans two dodges rapidly, they’re open to attack.

So just to clarify, I understand that you’re having general difficulties with mesmers, but are you also having difficulties picking the real mesmer out of the clones?

So just to clarify, I understand that you’re having general difficulties with mesmers, but are you also having difficulties picking the real mesmer out of the clones?

yeah more with picking out the real one more so than actually fighting them but advise on both is appreciated

Look for the one that moves differently than the others. Chaos likes to do fancy flips for his dodges. I tend to strafe around.

Use Control+T at the very beginning and practice doing it fast so you might be able to keep an eye on them in the middle of the fight.

Most of the time I look for buffs , mesmer is the one with the most buff on, combine with 90% of the time mesmer is the one that appears LAST after stealth wears off and most of the time is the one that is moving.

how does the stealth spike work? I’ve been hit by it a couple time and can’t figure it out

They stealth up, run up to you and dodge + shatter to summon clones and burst. Once there’s atleast 1-2 clones near you they’ll instantly shatter out of stealth to burst you for nutty damage. The original mesmer also counts as a clone for this, so they almost always do it in melee-range

Like I said before, if you see them stealth, try to count 2 seconds and dodge, bte you on US or EU?

So there’s a whole bunch of different characteristics that you’ll learn to just automatically see when fighting mesmers. I’ll try and list as many as I can here.

Movement
Clones move as if they can only use the forward key. They never strafe, never move backwards, never dodge roll. Any of those movements instantly will identify the real mesmer.

Skills
Clones only spam the autoattack of a given weapon over and over. The one using any skills whatsoever is always the mesmer.

Boons
Clones have a quite limited selection of boons. They’ll rarely get vigor, rarely get might, rarely get swiftness, rarely get protection. The mesmer will often get multiple boons, regardless of build.

Persistent Bar Effects
Mantras, signets, food buffs, wvw orb buff, anything like that will show up on the mesmer, but not the clones (be wary of signet of illusions, as it does show up on illusions, unlike all the others). Seeing those persistent bar effects all identify the real mesmer.

Stealth
Mesmer only has one source of aoe stealth that actually ends up applying to clones: mass invisibility. The clones will generally get revealed rapidly due to their autoattacks, while the mesmer will remain in stealth longer. All other sources of stealth for the mesmer are self only (I’m ignoring veil for the moment, as clones tend not to walk through veil). This means that if you see one stealth and then unstealth, that’s the mesmer.

That’s pretty much it. If you learn all of those little characteristics of the mesmer, you’ll be able to instantly identify the mesmer every time.

One, I totally did NOT create OMFG. I just made the thread for it.

Secondly, one important thing to keep in mind is that if you see a Mesmer go into stealth, odds are they’ll try to shift behind you to make it more difficult to target them. It’s a simple tactic but surprisingly effective.

Adding to what Chaos just posted about seeing a mesmer go into stealth: the spike can be predicted. Count to two or three (depending on how fast you count :P) and do a dodge roll. Or start channeling your GS-4 block on your ranger after two seconds.

You can avoid a lot of pressure if you know you can predict it.

You forgot to list out that you will not see off-hand weapon on clones.
