[question] is it worth coming back?
No. NOTHING HAS CHANGED AT ALL SINCE YOU LEFT. Look at the patch notes. They did nothing to WvW at all. The only things they’ve added in the last few months have been gemstore items and like 1 living story thing. Also to the person below, if gold servers are dead why would you ever go to a bronze server… having transferred from bronze I can tell you there is noooooobody in WvW in those servers.

I’m not coming back, not that you care.
(edited by Elitist.8701)
There is a very large expansion coming before September.
Ultimately the game relies on the content in WvW and PVP for adding freshness between expansions as the living story is quite stale. If you dislike WvW on a gold server scale you can always try silver or bronze.
Either way the important aspect to the game is finding friends. This game is very boring if played alone. If you are looking to play the game alone then don’t come back. Go play Skyrim or something. But if you can find yourself a proper guild of people you enjoy playing with then you should return. If not now, then after the expansion hits.
edit: read the patch notes. I dont know when you left.

WvW died for me too when my guild called it quits and many of the guildies transferred elsewhere. At that point I started playing PvP, and joined up with OMFG. From there I started playing/interacting with the OMFG (Official Mesmer Forum Guild) community. Though I play less due to time constraints, it has been very enriching gaming.
Also I picked up Killshot Warrior which I play relatively seriously for maximum enjoyment :D
Finally, I personally make vids up of my gaming which highlights a lot of the kind of stuff I get up to. So that in itself it fun :D
Otherwise you’re right to assume GW2 is same old same old.
WvW has never been fun, or worth doing. But if you like roaming, it never went “out of favor”. Sure there are massive fights, but you can always roam…
It depends when you left.
I know some people who left maybe a few months after launch, they’ve come back and are having a blast as all the bugs and systems have changed.
I would say it’ll be worth coming back for the expansion, new WvW map and the expansion should increase populations across the board. I’m currently on a silver server and it’s nice here as I only get to play evenings and weekends where there’s always stuff going on and stuff for large and small groups.
As for PvE, if you haven’t played the living story season 2 that’s actually worth playing and sets up for the expansion. Also the soundtrack for it is very nice.
If you left after LA got nerfed then a few things have changed but nothing drastic except new player experience and not really in WvW. Again, the LS is worth checking out in that case and getting ready for the expansion.
If you left when the LS season 2 ended….yeah nothing’s really happened, wait till HoT expansion is released.
If you feel the need to make a forum thread about it, then obviously you want to give GW2 another try. o just do it, and see for yourself. I don’t know when you left, but for me at least, pvp became a lot more enjoyable since april 2014, where the UI was simplified and more people started playing.
WvW has never been fun, or worth doing. But if you like roaming, it never went “out of favor”. Sure there are massive fights, but you can always roam…
In higher tier servers roaming has “fallen out of favor” because massive blobs of 80 stampeding around the map block out all the solo players and having few opponents makes this very boring for many people. It does not help that most opponents are incompetent and will run to the protection of 5-60 people or call for assistance at a glimpse of you in the distance, but there are lots of fun things to do in WvW, your statement was purely opinion with absolutely no factual base.
@OP For enjoyment in wvw you can, troll zergs and video it, stealth icebow massive blobs, make instant kill montages, make outnumbered commentaries, duel, roam with friends, troll more enemies, find glitches around wvw, cheat your way into objectives, experiment with builds, and make incompetent players QQ.

You may want to change that last part, I’m gonna take it when you say “cheat” your way into objectives you mean sneak in with an enemy, hide and flip the objective. No-one condones cheating in any way

;P ofc we don’t we only use features anet adds to our game. That can’t be cheating wether or not it’s intended. I don’t actually know wether or not using some of the mechanics anet puts into the game is considered cheating I haven’t asked them. Like is using mesmer gs auto from 1420 distance cheating because it wasn’t intended to work that way, or reviving someone through walls, leveling up mid combat using a time ( before it was nerfed), etc… It would make logical sense that we never know what anet intendeds so unless they specifically tell us it’s cheating or it involves hacks it’s not really cheating.
(edited by Sadrien.3470)
reviving someone through walls
That’s definitely intended: reviving does not require a LoS. You constantly see thieves drop their refuge and rez safely from a ledge/behind a wall in pvp, even in major tournaments, and Anet never said anything.
The range on mesmer GS (and every other ranged attack) is probably due to the way Anet calculates the range when you are standing above your target. If you shoot from a ledge, your range increases. Let’s say that it’s because… err… because we have a better overall vision of the map.
Some things are a little different… But a lot of bugs and the status quo are the same.
If your looking to get back into GW2 maybe better to wait for HoT.
Traits becoming specializations may reshape the balance a little. Something as simple as being able to apply pressure to a thief just because you have 2 clones up might even things out but we’ll have to see. (A lot of dev bias against us, and likely lots of changes from the initial preview of specializations.)
For now I say go play some duck game. lol

This logic is wrong and can absolutely get you banned for exploiting.
An exploit is defined as an exploitable bug in the game. You’re not using any hacks, you’re not cheating the game client itself, but you’re still committing a bannable offense. Here’s a couple of examples:
Numerous instances of mass bans due to monetary gain from an exploit. When Anet introduced a recipe or miscoded some price so that it gave more than it was supposed to or it cost less than it was supposed to, people exploited that. Those people also got banned.
You used to be able to wall jump into every keep in WvW. You didn’t need a third party program or hacks, you just walked up to a wall and basically mashed space bar. I don’t know if anyone got banned for this (since wvw…), but it’s absolutely a bannable offense of an exploit.
In general, when you’re about to do something, there’s some questions you should ask yourself.
- Is this a seemingly normal behavior for the game?
- Am I benefitting in an abnormally large way from this action?
- Does what I’m doing feel generally wrong, as if I’m breaking the rules of the game in some way?
If you answer yes to any of those questions, then there’s a good chance that you’re using a bannable exploit. Let’s apply that to your examples.
GS auto reaching slightly farther than it should. This is a minor thing that is not out of line with how other similar attacks perform. You’re not benefitting in an abnormally large fashion, and it doesn’t seem generally broken or wrong.
Using a tome to level up and full heal+ knockback. This is abnormal behavior for the game. However, you’re not benefitting in a large way from it (winning a 1v1 maybe?), and it doesn’t feel like a massively wrong or broken thing, just amusingly broken. In this case, I’d refrain from doing it, but I wouldn’t worry so much about getting banned for it.
Reviving someone through a wall or gate. This is an abnormal behavior for the game. Additionally, you’re getting a potentially massive gain from it: portaling into a keep or tower. Lastly, it feels wrong, as if you’re breaking the game. Somebody inside a tower that got killed being revived by someone outside? Nothing is right about that. In this instance, I’d call it an absolutely bannable exploit, to be for at your own risk.
I’m still having a blast, but I think it depends on your frequency of play. I’ve taken breaks for weeks or even months a few times, and usually I’ll play constantly for a couple weeks, then break for a week.
That said, I think wvw is still very fun. I’m on FA, and I still see plenty of action, both roaming and zerg anytime I go into wvw. Eotm can actually be quite hilarious and fun if you do it right. Plenty of up levels to gank and you get into good fights with other like minded roamers.
I don’t know when you left, but I think since they added the newer wvw dailies I’ve seen things a little more active in wvw as well. For example if the daily is kill the veteran, check the veterans and you’ll usually find someone camping them or if you wait a min run into someone looking to get their daily done.
Pvp is still good fun too (though I’m mostly hot join nowadays since idgaf.
As I said to me the most important thing about gw2 is do not grind it! Just don’t slam the game until you are blue in the face and it’s great. Take breaks, don’t play every day. This game only gets old if you overdo it. But if you’re looking for a game to just play every day for hours, yes you will still get quickly burned out and bored I think.

Lucky for me I don’t do the later one, but it’s a fairly common strategy on some servers.
By your logic I can conclude that finding that way into the enemies home base / in order to troll them by having a dance party in their spawn is not banable ? Or is it considered abnormal benefit ? I can’t kill the players so I would put it under amusing, like map breakouts. But when they stand in open field place where they are invulnerable is this banable? If so there could be entire blobs of people getting banned. Also you missed the troll face.
(edited by Sadrien.3470)

Correct, that’s not a bannable exploit. You get absolutely zero benefit out of it other than pure amusement.
But when they stand in open field place where they are invulnerable is this banable? If so there could be entire blobs of people getting banned
This is…questionable. The only reason it’s not bannable is that those invuln spots only exist directly adjacent to a spawn area, and don’t allow the invulnerable people to actually reach anything important.

They do allow invulnerable players to rain death upon their unsuspecting pursuers with no threat of retaliation. I would put this under a similar Category too reviving through walls. In addition, there is/used to be a treb spot where you can hit your garris inner and outer wall while in the invulnerable zone. I should report those to the bug forums.

Yes, but this ‘rain of death’ is limited to a very localized area, depending on the spot. There’s only 2 spots that have anything approaching a use, on either side of the citadel, that are somewhat near the northern towers. However, you can’t actually hit anyone on the tower from that spot, so unless you decide to go and give them a target, they’re not going to be raining death on anything other than empty snow.
Compare that to reviving through walls, which can literally instantly hand possession of an important objective to an enemy team.

I went looking for this recently and couldn’t find it. It took them about a year and a half to fix it since I first brought it directly to the attention of the appropriate folks, but at least they did (I think).

Yeah that last time I actually witnessed this was months ago, glad it’s been fixed. Was hard finding a way to break that treb whenever people used it.
I think people are concentrating on the details and not respecting the idea and spirit of various mechanics. Invulnerability zones are generally to prevent spawn camping and to give a heavily battered team a chance to break out.
Looking at the waypoint changes you can see Anet is trying to promote more back and forth, especially making it hard to get a WP in a keep close to the starting area.
Rezzing through walls, well, it’s more of a thin walls thing. I don’t see it in WvW unless someone gets stuck in it in which case…lol stuck. There’s ways to deal with that and it’s more of a pain.

There are certain areas that give invuln in completely random locations outside of the spawn area, like in a nook in a corner of a cliff. They’re very clearly not intended, and that’s what was being referenced.
well thanks all for the replies, as for when i left it was during LS S2 i liked the story but honestly just got a bit well probobly burned out and a bit frustrated of no PvP ladder.
i have fully updated and already want to buy some of the new armour from the gem store…lol well ill give it a shot i think im going to level up my ranger, i always wanted to know what they where like at 80, and wait until HoT full details to see if / when i pick it up and play the mesmer again.
and nice to see you still around Fay, seeing as you used to (or still are?) a somewhat expert or adopter of the mantra builds, how are they now?
also any of the old guard came back? ChaosArchangel, Osicat, Pyroatheist ? not sure if chaos ever left tbh, but id say those where the golden days of my GW2 play time, trying to hunt them out (and you lol.
Spoiler alert: Pyro has been in this thread the entire time.
Look at how quick Fay is to tell someone that their logic is woefully (theres always gotta be a fancy adjective in there.) wrong. Seem familiar?
Also: Supcute is around. Seven Mirror has an impostor. Osi quit. I’m on and off. Mantra Fay pops up here and there. Ross is still around. Annndd I’ve got a profound goldfish memory so that’s all I remember.
annndd welcome back drix! There will be an update coming soon-ish that will have a heavy impact on the meta (in all modes) and all Mesmers will be running new or revamped builds.

Mesmer is getting huge buffs within this month (hopefully Tuesday). After the specialization changes.
