Yes, I am aware of some traits that don’t work and some other bugs.

Yes, I absolutely love this class.

PvE, SPvP, and WvW. Doesn’t matter what aspect of the game I am playing, I still love my necro.

While I am in Orr I thoroughly enjoy rounding up 5 or more mobs at a time and watching them all explode.

In WvW I absolutely love spreading 15+ stacks of bleed and other conditions to masses of enemies. Did you know our aoe abilities hit the tops of tower walls? Did you also know Epidemic doesn’t need line of sight to spread the conditions?

In closing: cheer up, emo kids! Necro isn’t that bad, really!

Same boat here =). Been dungeon running and sPvPing it up all week, always top 2 in sPvP and I’m holding my own just fine in dungeons. I do feel that necro is a little weaker than other classes right now, mainly due to all the bugs, but the people whining about being completely ineffective are doing something seriously wrong.

Stacking 15 bleeds like it’s nothing then hitting epidemic
Using DS teleport/chill to close the gap and tear someone to pieces with dagger + wells
Long range wells with mark spam from staff for huge AoE output from safe range

So many different ways to be effective as a necro, and it’s only going to get better. The synergy between skills and the different trees feels fantastic for me. Having a blast.

Some times i thought to play another class but when i compare them to my necro they just cant keep up.
I will play my Necro with or without fixes…. (although fixes would be nice)

I agree with Spoink. I like necromancer, I like it’s design (with few exception but nothing is perfect), and I play it as main everywhere (PVE, PvP, WvsW).
I don’t agree with Nekrothaft, he is not alone.
This class need fixes, a lot of them, but still it’s fun and I find it effective.
I guess most people don’t understand necromancer is all about control, not damage. No: you will have not 20k+ damage per single hit, no: you will have not cannons, if you want a class like this try something else. Necromancer is about control and tactics, not just spam a bunch of button for deal plain damage.

Honest request – mind posting your build? I’m trying to learn as much as I can about my chosen class, and even though I haven’t had much time to play lately it would be really helpful to see other people’s ideas.

I’m not looking for a complete tutorial, but merely hearing that the class is great and your build is awesome doesn’t help me much. I’m already going to try Tony’s Power Necro build, I have a conditionmancer I’m building towards in PvE (Still learning about my class and very aware of the fact that I suck. :P), so if you don’t mind, please post the build you’re using.

To the OP : No you’re not the only one that like the Necro, I’d say if people was not giving a kitten about Necro there will probably be less post about his current state than there is now, no one would play Necro and this forum would be empty.
The things you like in Necro are the things most people consider here as the strongest Skill/Trait/Abilities.
If you’re fine playing the only build that provide enough strengh to be competitive that’s good for you but that does not mean that people complaining about the lake of diversity of the Necro are wrong.
How about people that was expecting a minion build?

Well, I also love the class. SFX of it, to be precise. Most people do – otherwise they wouldn’t sit here waiting for bugfixes etc. The idea for “how a necro should work”, more or less, suits what I wanted to get. I like how skills work (or how they should), I like how they look. This is what most people mean by “loving the necro” I think.

What I don’t like are numbers behind it – and I think this is a common concern. It’s not that necro is inefficient – he can be, many people proved it. The real issue is that necro doesn’t have many ways to be efficient and lacks variety. People get tired of using the same build over and over again for hours and hours on end.
After that, risk : reward and effort : reward ratios seem to be off. I like to work for what I get and I enjoy a “hard class” (as opposed to a "mash two buttons repeatedly class) – OP is probably the same kind of person. Necro is not an easy class and most people find it challeging and thus – fun.

The discrepancy between “loving the class” and general consensus that necro is subpar is not really that great. Many people assume that necro players are complaining because the class sucks. It doesn’t. Most of complains are towards bugs, invability of many builds and incompatibility of class mechanics with few of the builds that work. That is why people are complaining, not because they don’t like the class or are “emo kids that would like to rework it”. The “rework” ideas concern the Death Shroud, which is a good mechanic and can be liked, but only as far as one’s build improves it. It’s not a mechanic that suits all builds, and that is the problem many people have with it. We all know that DS was initially a “downed state” mechanic for necros and it mostly stayed that way – we don’t see our UI in it, we can’t see our hp, boons, conditions, can’t use our build – only the 4 skills we were given with it. Many poeple don’t like that – especially those who like their necros built towards minions or conditions and are seeing DS as a mechanic which impairs their build (which it does).
I wouldn’t call those people “whiny emo kids” as spoink did. I think they have all the rights to expect a class mechanic which works with every build, not only DS-centric builds. I also liked DS because I built towards it. But then I wanted to try something different and … it’s either making DS viable or doing what you like. As long as both work toward the same build it’s ok. But if not – you start thinking if DS could be designed better.

Most of the people (aside from trolls) would only like to get what they were promised: a couple of varied, viable builds, a class mechanic that works with each of them (not with one or two), bugfixes and proper Risk : Reward and Effort : Reward playstyle compared to other classes (it either has to be High Risk : High Reward / High Effort : High Reward or Medium / Medium or even Low : Low – but not something like High Risk : Medium Reward). That’s all.

Edit: well, and maybe a few combo finishers. These would be cool ;-)

Conceptually it’s the class that intrigues me the most. Tanky caster with a nack for turning a negative situation into a positive one. However, it’s just not enjoyable when extremely key skills revolving the playstyle are bugged and not functioning as intended.

If I didn’t like it, it wouldn’t have been my first choice.

Yes, I love the class but I dont play it anymore at all. It is bugged class, 25 bleed stack limit on bosses cripples your damage as condi. Class have some wierd or useless traits like jagged horror which iv only seen to die without doing any damage or aggro some unwanted mob and so on.

Necro was my 1st class to hit 80, and as much as I loved it and hoped it would improve at max level, nope it remained bad. You are stuck on 1 working build and some other support builds that any other class can do better.

I rolled warrior and its now level 80, I feel that I can play around with different specs and weapons and it actually works! Traits are good, damage/survival is great, control is amazing with 2h hammer and I even kill stuff in PvP :P

Overall, I really want to play my necro but unless its fixed and polished, traits changed ect, in my oppinion it is garbage class.

I love it and hate what my future may hold if nothing is done, by 80. I like how I can adapt a lot in PvE(soloing). I was watching a Ranger for a while and thought, “thats it”? Send in the pet, pew, pew ,pew…dead mob. Do you even have to use any skills or strategy? I didn’t see him take on groups like I can or a veteran like I can. But still.

I love and still play my necro but the class needs a lot of work in some aspects.

Aside from the broken or useless traits, like Jagged Horror, the condition necro is severely limited in group combat. It becomes rather frustrating doing events or big boss battles and only getting bronze when the rest of my group gets gold.

During big events even if you are lucky enough to manage to hit something before it dies you either do not have enough time to actually stack conditions or the few measly conditions you manage to stick on your target don’t even count enough for you to receive drops or rewards from that mob.
Similarly with big boss encounters, the 25 stack limit means you are doing minimal damage the whole fight.

I really do love my necro but I would love it even more if I could actually play as the condition build I want to as opposed to being forced to carry non-condition-dps weapons with me just to be be able to properly contribute to big encounters.

i like it from a flavor standpoint however it is limited in a lot of ways and i personally would like to see the staff abilities changed. Not a fan of marks at all, just hoping that a mob would step on it during an encounter. Since I cannot direct my minions either can be a hassle. If i made the staff skills they would look something like:
1 – autoattack fine as is
2 – deathly claw (send out a shadowy hand that deals x shadow damage and steals a bit of the targets soul)
3 – shadow slash (send a shadow blast in a frontal arc that deals shadow aoe damage and causes a blind effect)
4 – noxious field (blast the target area with a cloud of poison that lasts for 5 seconds)
5 – wreath of souls (life energy swirls around the player, anyone that is in the field or go into the field flees in terror. point blank aoe, 2 sec duration. prolly 45 sec cd at least)

PvE is just fine with bleed stack + epidemic for me; sPvP had me on a crossroad on either fully converts from condition build to power-crit build. Had not yet played my necro on WvW though due to my weak GPU yet I’m leaning more on Long range with well build.

Despite the bugs on traits, I still do love my necromancer, and I believe that in due time ArenaNet will make some decent changes to this class.

Can those claiming they can’t get gold in DEs, please explain what you’re doing, because the only time I don’t get gold is when I get there a few seconds before it ends. Even then I can get silver for barely doing anything it seems. I just throw down wells, marks and pop epidemic on any mob with loads of bleeds and run into the pack in DS hit #4 and run out…rinse/repeat. Never had any issue. This tactic seems fairly obvious….mass AOE bleeds and conditions hitting everything.

Not having problem during DE, just like what Josher said, just pop some wells and marks.

I do get gold always, even with a weak GPU resulting in a low FPS during DE’s and having a hard time seeing mobs coming or appearing, usually I do determine their arrival or respawn by checking on mark effects on being triggered or those spiked traps from the other class.

This works fine if there is a smaller amount of people, but in big zerg-groups there is not enough time to stack enough bleeds to use epidemic, in fact most of the time the mobs are dead before I can even finish casting epidemic. If you don’t run a well build and have wells to rotate through you need to rely fully on marks or wait for cool down on DS #4.

I haven’t seen more than 3 or 4 people at any DE since the starter zones. I’m 65 now and have been doing many of them solo, unless its group dependent. What you said makes perfect sense though. If everything is dying quickly, our bleeds don’t mean diddly squat. We’ll see when I hit 80. Really, Anet can’t do squat about it unless they change the formula for rewards, counting simply hitting the mobs as reward enough. Considering Necros have zippo for burst dmg, Anet barely gave the whole concept of DE rewards more than a passing thought in how they function then.

What a complete amateurish oversight.

In case of DEs, there are more oversights than that: when I encoutered a DE with more than a couple of people doing it, I switched to supporting / healing etc. That gave me gold usually, but … almost no loot from monsters. Generally, support is penalized by lack of loot (no mob-taging), so there’s only damage – lots of direct AoE damage to be precise. That is what’s rewarded. Some classes have easier support because of it (as their support abilities are large AoEs that do damage at the same time – see Chaos Storm, many ele AoEs, few of guardian’s consecrations etc.), some have a hard time (namely necro and engineer). Wells can be nice to tag, but are extremely unreliable when most professions have various AoE displacement abilities that can throw anything outside of wells before they tick and the cooldown is too long to throw another. Marks would be cool, but casttime can be a pain. DS #4 is cool, but the cooldown is a bit long to rely on it in DEs.

Necros don’t deal too much direct damage, let alone much AoE direct damage (and will rarely be Power specced in PvE – I haven’t seen any power specced necro in PvE ever – this is not to say they don’t exist, only that they are very rare, at least on my server). I’ve seen many people complain that they can’t even tag mobs in damage builds because they are AoEd to death before any casttime finishes. That may be an exaggeration, but it is truly hard to tag a lot of mobs with condition damage when they can be dead before conditions tick enough to tag a mob.

We all like the class, or at least the idea of the class – we even enjoy it. That does not mean however, that we don’t recognize the class’ problems.

Half of our abilities and traits are bugged.

We only have one viable spec in tournaments and that spec isn’t any good compared to other similar specs for other classes.

I could go on but I won’t. There are innumerable threads on this forum about the problems with this class. The Necromancer is my favorite class in this game. I play a melee-powermancer even though it isn’t very effective. I will continue to push Arena.net to fix and buff the class until we are on par with the other classes.

I also love the class. Like others have pointed out if we didn’t love the class we would not be here (not counting the trolls).

But no one likes being the “unloved step-child” and that is how A.Net is treating the Necro. Most of the bugs that we have pointed out were in the first BWE. Our pet AI has been bad for some time and all they do is fix the Ranger’s pet. While our pets are much better than in the first BWE they are still not fixed. If any of you were playing that weekend out pets almost never attacked.

Agreed, there is very little reward for support-heavy play styles in general. However even if there was it would not solve the problem of minimizing condition damage with the 25 stack cap on major bosses and the like.

25 stack cap doesn’t help, true. What is even worse is that getting good medals on big events (Shatterer anyone?) is hard as it is without top gear. Adding to that the crazy ammount of bots which improve faster than ANet is getting rid of them and the problem is getting out of hand. It’s not an exclusive necro issue – but how should people know this? Most necros I know don’t have any other characters near 80 lvl and they think that bugged traits, skills and lack of synergy are the only contributing factors. They are not, but they make life even harder.

Edit: these apply to PvE only obviously. In PvP, there are different issues (minion AI, DS incompatibility with working builds, overnerfing before release etc.). But in case of PvP the only thing I can say is that there were always cycles of nerfs and buffs and necros just landed on the bottom during release. Pity, but I guess it’ll be better. Cycles have the innate property of turning.

Yeah I have to say I really feel like my necro is my class. I played the original GW and rolled a necromancer. His name was Sid Sycle, after the punk rocker. Loved the /dance and the overall look so just kept with him.

I just wish I could get more of that ‘punk’ look with this toon. I imagine Syndi Sycle is his niece and would love it if the helm wasnt just a hat but a scar pattern across her face like in GW. And the /dance, really, shufflin’, really? This girl is wilder than that, she needs a /dance that has a good possiblilty to cause injury to herself or other!

I love my necro, been doing fairly well with it in spvp. I love causing mass headaches to grouped up enemy’s with many aoe conditions coupled with wells and marks. It’s nice to see 3-5 people melt within 4 seconds without knowing wth is happening. The flesh golem charge always makes me chuckle when it knocks some poor sod over.
