Is Necromancer good/viable for PvE?
I have enjoyed every aspect of the necromancer – from PVE to SPVP and dungeon crawl. I am a casual player almost level 50, when you find a build you like my suggestion is to ignore all the reads and play what your comfortable, address issues when they arise.
Definitely. As a level 40 necro, I can say you have pretty good survivability with DS, even without speccing into it. And with axe+dagger/staff you have very good kiting abilities and can take on veterans/champions solo, or groups of 5+ enemies.
My experience, as a well focused necro that specced full into the Death/Blood trait lines for toughness and health, is that I can PvE very well. I can kill 3-4 mobs almost as fast as I can kill a single mob, and anything short of chain knockdowns has a very hard time bringing ME down.
The other side of that is, that while I can kill 3-4 mobs as easy as 1 mob…. my damage is overall pathetic, and a lot of it turns into a ‘battle of attrition’. Think of it more like your outlasting the enemies, not killing them.
I have a level 80 charr necormancer and 1v1, it takes boss level mobs or powerful champion ones to kill me.
I am spec’d 30,30,10,0,0 I generally farm 10 mobs at once if I can get all lizards, or half a doz humanoids, if I can get all melee. 90% survival rate on any 5 fights.
you have sligthly better survivality than any other proff built for survivality
you have a tenth (if that) the damage output of said other proff, you will take ages to kill stuff that everyone just breezes thru
I decided to roll a necromancer as soon as they revealed the profession. Now I have a level 80 human necro and still discovering new things. Experimentation has lead me to 10/20/10/0/30 shroud dancing and so far, loving it~
I’ve been Rolling 30/0/0/30/10 with Staff and Axe/Dagger with Light of Dwayna, Well of Suffering, Well of Darkness, Well of Power and Lich form.
I find that with Ruby Berserker jewlery (My armour is a bit of a mish mash) I can run in, drop all my wells, drop all my marks, go to Death Shroud, press 4 and the mob will be pretty much dead. I can then swap to my axe/dagger to finish off the leftovers, or pop lich form to pump out some pretty crazy straight line DPS on Veterans/Champions.
I love this class, so it kinda hurts to say this, but necros are meh ATM. Don’t get me wrong, I had a ton of fun playing this class, but its painfully obvious this class didn’t receive very much attention code wise past its initial conception. The trait trees are sloppy, bugged and all over the place and most utility skills either function partially or don’t work at all. In instances, your minions will get your group killed when they run off and aggro random mobs. They also won’t live past 2 or 3 hits so they’ll end up on cool down for 90% of the instance. You’re not going to be surviving any close combat boss fights (no one does actually) so dagger main hand is out of the question. You’re either going to run staff or scepter/dagger. Staff is horrible damage, but thankfully scepter/dagger does better. Its still pretty low damage when compared to other classes though.
With that said, when they iron out most of the bugs and finally give necros more viable build options (condition spec is realistically the the only viable one ATM) I will definitely come back to playing this class.
I’d rather be playing a necro than a warrior, but I don’t foresee any serious fixes until about 6 months from now. Until then, I’m having fun stomping every necro I see in WvW. I single them out actually. They’re a free kill to me in their current state. Though this might have more to do with me having intimate knowledge of how necros work.

Wanted to edit my post, but the stupid forums are bugged again and won’t give me the option.
Wanted to also say that outside of instances you won’t have any real issue leveling to 80. Any class can level to 80 even if they didn’t spend any trait points. However, other classes will probably do it faster.
I think Necro is a lot of fun in PVE. You won’t kill as fast as some other classes, but its a very flexible class. I use staff & dual daggers.
