So I’ve been playing GW2 for a little over a month now – I have a Thief around 64, a engineer around 62, a warrior in the 30’s. Being a leveler, I started a necromancer – since my days of EQ1, I’ve been in love with the Necro classes.

So right now, my necro is around level 12 – not very high at all. I’m not bashing this class or calling it OP or UP, but I’m finding myself not liking how it is played.

I’m using Scepter/Dagger for Main w/ Staff ALT – granted, I’m really not sure what I’m doing with the staff abilities from an AOE perspective.

With access to very few skills & traits, I haven’t found that niche of skills that feel right.

Does this class start to change in feeling in a few more levels? I don’t find it difficult to kill things, just have to run around a bit more. I’m not looking for the big numbers or insta-death to mobs, just for a bit more cohesion in playing.

EDIT: This is for PVE only as I don’t do much, if any, PVP

Every class gets more interesting when you actually have utilities. Necromancer weapon abilities are pretty lame, really. The utilities and DS are what make it interesting.

Try it in PvP. I’ve not leveled a Necro, only played in sPvP, but in sPvP it is one of the most interesting, though somewhat underpowered, professions. sPvP gives you access to all the abilities and gameplay options. Depending on which runes, sigils, amulet, and weapons you select, you can build your necromancer as a bleeder, direct damage, or bleeder/healer, with or without focus on deathshroud. You can combine any of those with a predominantly minion-based, wells-based, corruptions-based, or mixed utility slots (including signets of various purpose) for a great variety of play styles.

You don’t have to do any actual PvP, just use the golems and NPC’s for practice.

Absolutely blows my mind that you are considering dropping a class after 12 levels

That’s not even one day…that’s barely 6 hours i think

If you really want to get a glimpse of necro, join Heart of the Mists to get all your skills and play around with the DPS trial NPC robots. That way you don’t have to get your frail mitts dirty in that icky PvP stuff we all love. It will give you a good idea of what you can do, as you’ll have access to every utility and all your traits.

Yes…it does get better. I agree that Necro felt kinda mediocre early on. I didn’t feel like Necro really felt stronger and more flexible until my mid-20s and then it just improved from there. So, if you can bear with it until then, I think you’ll be happier.

I use Staff and Scepter/Dagger (I used to be Dagger/Dagger but recently had to admit to myself that Scepter/Dagger was better).

Once you start getting Consume Conditions, wells and some other skills, I think you’ll feel alot happier with Necro’s abilities.

Stealth nerfs are the perfect fertilizer for mistrust.

I think the Necro is quite straight-forward and boring when it comes to PvE (since the NPC A.I. is so predictable too). I only have 1 character that I’ve really played PvE with, and it’s the Necro; currently, lv. 80 (my next highest is a lv.9 Ranger). I only play PvE with my brother though, so it wasn’t bad (I enjoy exploring and looking for those hidden dungeons—not the long instanced ones). But mostly what I did was either use staff + wells or dagger + wells (and I use minions too). I just do what I think is most effective/efficient, and it’s all quite very straight-forward and repetitive (although I don’t think it’s much different for other classes?). Unless there’s something I’m not seeing…
