I have been playing my necro for awhile now and I’ve just come across karma vendors with Power Toughness Crit damage gear, and I’m just curious.. but why is nobody using this type of gear setup?

I’ve been messing around with soldier gear from AC and such and the jewels were becoming a pain to get, so when I found the exotic power/tough/crit jewels, I gave em a shot.

I’ve had them for over a week now and let me tell you.. I’ve been trying to keep my crit percentage around 20% and use the fury from entering DS to do big burst, and the numbers I’m seeing are amazing.

I hit for 2k, 2k, 4k with my dagger and it’s just annihilating people. I’m actually really tanky because I am wearing full solider gear socketed with crest of the soldier, power tough crit ammy, accessories, and back piece, and zerker weps+rings. I have roughly 23.5k hp 23% crit(I’d have to double check that) and over 40% crit damage.

So I’m just curious.. why is nobody trying this in their builds?

I think more crit % equal more damage in the long run. Of course when you crit you’re gonna be more bursty than someone equipped with Knights for example, but you only crit 20% of the time.

You can see in this table : http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Critical_hit#Table that having crit % is better than stacking crit damage with low crit change, in the long run.

Not saying it can’t work, but that’s why more peoples tend to stack crit % first.

Temple of Balthazar has all of the rings, jewels, and backpack for 42k karma a piece. Idk if I am going to get the armor because I am happy with where I am at now honestly, very decent HP pool, very tanky, and I pack a punch,

Oh… Balthazar. Event’s broken again in SoS, I also just checked and the items don’t come with jewels, which is a problem for me.

@Panhauramix, ah I see I see, but I do love the added toughness. I’m looking to maybe get 30% crit so when I have fury I have 50% crit chance.

The upgrade slot, it comes empty from those karma items.

In addition to the math in the wiki table that Panhauramix linked to, higher crit chance also adds value in the form of more “on crit” procs, such as Barbed Precision.

If you could rely on having fury up alot to supply extra crit chance, then crit damage on your gear makes more sense. But necros don’t have alot of fury sources.

They have one, and it gives either 50% or 100% fury uptime depending on if you trait for Near to Death or not (which I would argue you should in any crit damage build). Necros don’t need any other sources of fury.

@OP: That gear wasn’t out when I was making my build, it was added to the Orr vendors in the last patch IIRC. I have a bit over 50% crit chance before Fury because I use a few on-crit effects and I want to ensure that they proc regularly. I think that your gear choice makes sense given that your only benefit from crits is damage.

According to that table, increases in crit % averages TWICE as good as increases in crit damage. Crit damage only equals out as a good alternative when crit % is already at 50%.

So its pretty safe to say always take crit % over crit damage. You also get more procs to boot as mentioned previously.

Dundle, very interesting! What power build are you using with this?

Power/toughness/crit dmg power build. Im not sure it really is the best idea though cuz the crit chance is 20% and for each second there is no crit, dps is lower than what it could be.

Dundle, very interesting! What power build are you using with this?

I’m using the Deathhammer build.. I think that’s what it’s called.. And the added toughness gives me incredible survivability and I can have fury for 3 seconds every 10 seconds with that build.

If you really want toughness then you’re still better off with knights gear. As was already mentioned, it’s better to have a higher crit chance than a lower one with a lot of crit severity.

I’ve used rare cavaliers trinkets along with my berserker armor for a while now, and it works well in 20+ fractals, thanks to the new exotic trinkets at the temples, I’m looking at 55-58% crit chance.

Too glassy is bad in fractals, too much hp is bad too, toughness is actually great!
