Are you using single-target attacks (e.g., staff1, scepter1) to get them to attack? Minions will not attack on AOE skills, like marks and wells.

They do attack, learn to control your minions.

Marks will make them aggro, by the way. The first mark will acquire aggro, any marks after that will effectively “tag” the targets affected to be hit next, after the initial target is made invalid (dies, goes out of range).

I use scepter/staff and I’m guessing my minions have a less than 50% attack rate. Using scepter1/staff/1 does not help at all with raising the attack rate for me. Been like this for months and I can’t believe they can’t fix this. If Anet needs help I know more than a few people that could have them attacking within a day…….

edit: I’ll add every necro I’ve talked to ingame has the same problem. Minions just don’t attack at all they just stand and watch the fight…..

They “can’t” fix this because it isn’t an issue, there are rare glitches with Flesh Golem and Bone Minions where they will “stick” to an old target, or miss the aggro cue, but if you’re around 50% attack rate, its your fault for not knowing how to control your minions.

Yet it still doesn’t work all the time. There are countless videos showing the exact opposite, you spam 1, be it with dagger, axe, etc, and the minions stares at your healthbar while you take a beating (except the ranged ones who normally are right on target and even switch when you do.)

I don’t know how many time my bone minions attack one at a time, and the one I blow up is the one who was by my side in idle mode. It is a issue.

Also careful when testing in HotM, it’s far from the truth about how things works in PvE/WvW. Just look at our other thread about downed health in PvE vs PvP. There does seem to be a lot of differences in coding for both worlds.

We did the video in PvE, and I did my testing in PvP. Are there occasional glitches? Of course, ANet isn’t that great at doing AI programming. Are there repeat offenders? Yes, Bone Minions and Flesh Golem are pretty notorious for staring you down while you die.

That said, if you are having issues more than 10% of the time, its your fault. Realize that the coding isn’t perfect, learn how they work, and work with them. It isn’t an ideal scenario, but suck it up and deal with it.

Sorry but you’re totally wrong at least in my case. I sent a bug report in maybe my character is just bugged or something because in my testing I’m sitting around 60% here from pushing “1”. Hard not to believe something I’m seeing with my own eyes. So suck it up yourself because I’m not content with the bugs I hope for fixes.

So you test in one small, isolated section of the game and conclude its fine? Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

The infuriating thing is I haven’t had a single problem EVER with any other pet/minion of any other class in this game. Just necros. The very fact that there is a “wrong way” to initiate combat should scream FIX ME IM BROKEN. If I pull with an aoe trap on my ranger, my pet attacks properly 100% of the time. If I pull with an aoe mark on my necro, my pets are completely clueless. My guardian’s spirit weapons never stand around doing nothing even if I attack with a ground targeted aoe like scepter smite.

Why do I test in HotM? Because that is the only area where you can get remotely conclusive “scientific” data. Any data you get in PvE is “corrupted” by the fact that everything there is going to attack back, and that causes aggro. Same in WvW, they are going to have corrupted testing because you are fighting an actual target.

So far, all my testing has held true, just obviously what works in perfect lab environments doesn’t translate perfectly to the field, as is the case with everything. It doesn’t mean what I know isn’t valid, it just means that things get muddy in the field.

I’ve run them in WvW. They bug out in huge team fights (they’re terrible there anyway, why the heck do you have them?) as you would expect; there would be so many different things going on it wouldn’t be surprising for them to get confused. I’ve never seen them bug out in strange ways otherwise.

When you are fighting a real target, that target attacks you, and just like magic, your minions aggro. The only time getting them to aggro is an issue is when you want to focus a specific target, or start a fight. In which case my knowledge of aggro is very much important.

As for it being a “waste”, knowledge, especially of the mechanics of how things work, is never useless.

Something must have happened between now and then or HotM has some completely different AI.

I’m finally getting around to doing map completion on my necro. Decided to play MM since I never use it in PVE. Using a 30/0/20/20/0 build. All of this happened in Diessa Plateau. Played for about an hour there before logging off in frustration.

First started with scepter (forgot unequip it o_O) against some separatist NPCs. Only my Bone Fiend and Blood Fiend would attack. Bone Minions, Shadow Minion, and Flesh Golem refused to attack until I used golem charge. Then the golem would attack that one NPC, but would stop in its tracks after it killed it and would refuse to do anything else. The other two still wouldn’t attack no matter what I did. Then I switched to dagger/warhorn. They all started to finally attack on my auto attack chain, but the Bone Minions still refused to do anything 2/3rds of the time. Golem would just randomly stand there for no apparent reason. Axe was hit and miss. Most of the time they would attack, but they’d still bug out (except the ranged minions who would work every time) quite a lot, even when using auto attack only.

Against structures, none of them would attack except the Bone Fiend, period.

I know you made a video, but my experience last night was VASTLY different than what you’ve shown. My conclusion is that minions are still broken and not worth using in PVE.

Is it a specific minion which does not respond, or all of them do not respond?

Hmm, could it be there is some kind of issue caused by a wonky interplay of minions and, say, certain sigils, runes or traits? Or ping time? I’m trying to think of why some folks might see this occur and others not.

Diessa Plateau is 80% flat terrain. How on earth would pathing be an issue?

As was said earlier, the other classes with pets or minion mobs don’t have this problem and they always attack like they should. Thieves Guild attacks every time all of the time. Never had a problem with either of them just standing there in any situation, ever. Ranger pets will stick to a player/NPC like glue and will not get off you even if the ranger is 3000 meters away.

I just tested minions (Bone Fiend, Bone Minions, Shadow Fiend & Flesh Golem) in Orr against Risen, and in Diessa Plateau against separatists and critters. I could only get them to fail to respond once, and that was by 1) disabling auto-attack, 2) not targeting the separatist, and 3) dropping a mark on him at far range. That said, every other time I did that same routine, the minions did respond. I tried to use the trebuchet hills near the Redreave Mill WP to get an altitude difference, but had no pathing issues.

I had thought marks were unreliable to prompt minions to attack, but I didn’t have an issue aside from that one occurrence, although single-target attack did sometimes seeom to prompt them maybe a half-sec quicker (but that may be observer error).

Roughly 20 risen, and 40 separatists, and maybe a dozen critters.

My build is in my signature. I tried half the test with those traits and half with minion specific traits in Spite(IX), Death(III,X), and Blood(VII). I used both scepter(Bloodlust)/dagger(Agony) and staff(Soldier crest). No detectable difference from weapon or traits changes.

Its got me puzzled too. I just finished my daily (mostly in Diessa, Snowden and Wayfarer) and used minions for the whole thing and had no issues, aside from one time when after the flesh golem charged he stood around for about 4 sec before re-engaging. I also did notice that the Bone Minions are usually the last to respond, sometimes 1-2 sec later than the others, but I didn’t see them not engaging.

I gotta say, with a high healing power for high regen and traited for minions, the minions stood up very well and overall they made it pretty faceroll, even in Orr.

Bhawb the pets constantly fail to attack in PvP. Testing in the mists I dont think I ever had them fail to attack when Im testing on one target. However when I test on the lord (multiple targets) the pets very often do not attack after the first target is dropped and will not attack again no matter what skills I use other then the long cooldown activated pet skills charge, blind etc…

Get better at testing before you flame people, we both know you did not test against the lord thats 5 targets you must drop. Do that fight 10 times and at least 1 time pets will bug out probably more times then that.

You might have something there. When I do map completion, I just mass pull everything around me. Everything. Even if I don’t need that particular NPC for the heart quest I’m doing. Its unusual for me to fight a single NPC at a time. This only happens when there aren’t any other NPCs or they’re to far away for me to grab without the other resetting.

Perhaps having more than one target is whats causing the AI to sometimes break. I do know that when I am fighting a thief in WvW that is constantly stealthing in and out repeatedly, the Flesh Golem will eventually stop doing anything at all. Might be a problem with the reacquisition of targets. However, that still doesn’t explain why sometimes, even if I am only fighting one NPC, the Bone Minions just stand there and do nothing.

Just finished levelling to 80 as a MM and had that issue occasionally – the ranged minions would attack just fine but the melee ones would just sit there.

There is indeed something wonky with the pathing – but if you drag your melee minion over to within melee range of the target just by moving your character closer, your minion will wake up and start attacking.

Hope that helps!

It’s a weapon and pathing issue. It’s not a Minion AI issue as it’s not prevalent with every single minion. Flesh Golem and Bone Minions seem to run into the NPC wonky AI more than others.

In my 500 plus pvp games as a MM. I can guarantee you their rate is closer to 90 percent. The problems in pvp is Engineer and burst ele train wreck a full minion build so quickly it’s a joke. Let’s not even get started with talking about how badly they perform against Shatter Mesmers.

Kravick, you fought me, and my minions were on you the whole time except when you disappeared.

We released a video about this, and did basic tests.

We also confirmed several well known issues.

1) Weapons have a huge effect on Minions performance. Staff and Scepter are awful with their Minion responsiveness. Axe Auto and Dagger Auto have the greatest success.

2) Weapon skills with piercing or AOE cause a delayed response on minion action. (Our unproven theory is that this is to help with pulls).

3) Marks seem to have their own world in terms of Minion AI, while Scepter causes the most noticeable issues and we are unsure why since it’s random.

4) Any AoE attack not followed immediately by a single target Auto Attack has a real high probability of bugging out your melee minions.

5) The only way to get constant minion attacks is to use only Single target attacks on an enemy.

6) Another easy way to get a minion to attack is to use a single target attack and then hide behind your minion until they are attacked (there will be delays as they have to identify your target).

7. We also noticed that server response time can create an issue with noticing the responsiveness. Bhawb and I are both west coast and so closer to the main server. I have noticed while playing with an EU player, that while his seems to take longer to respond it has more to do with server communication as they still respond he just doesn’t see it or the server communication is slower.

Back then, we also thought using single target attack would work.

I tested it for 2 weeks in WvW.

If I casted my bones minions before the fights, they would rarely ever attack my target. Even if I pushed and pushed and pushed the auto attack and they just wouldn’t work.

I gotta say I don’t really care about any test that have been done that give different result then me.

I have the issue, and many necromancer have the issue.

Auto attack doesn’t resolve it.

That’s a rather difficult way to go through life. The AI issue before the March/February patch where they did an AI improvement patch was awful regularly buggy and routinely had random pathing issues. You seem unwilling to listen to anything but your own advice. If this is the case, why even post.

Write your solution along with the way to properly code it without making it OP to the developing team, if you are as good as you seem to believe you are, they will take it and run with it.

Here is the issue, you tested it months ago before the improvements, while we did extensive testing not even a week ago. Before we did the video both Bhawb and myself did testing for hours to make sure we had a good grasp of AI.

You had 2 weeks of usage. I have 500 games of pvp play coupled with close to 500 hours of MM gameplay in pve and my amazing 300 minutes of WvWvW. I have recorded dungeon’s with me playing MM. It’s on the SOACGaming channel including two MM killing off spider boss (notoriously difficult on MM).

Single Target Attack x 2 works 90 percent of the time for every single minion. There is no variable, no change, no stop unless you get a wonky pathing issue.

Will my minions start attacking on the 30th?

Lets go try minions out in HotM……Still broken. The aggro fails about 1/3 of the time leaving you with 2-3 minions just standing there.

@Bas I got like 1k of pvp on necro, please, the minion ai is horrible. Its nice that you think 2x attacks solve it, but its not consistent and if its not consistent then its broken.

You got 1k of pvp as an MM. I have 500 as an MM. You have 1k as what a conditionmancer, and that makes you an expert on MM?

Minion AI is the same as every other NPC AI. 2 single auto attacks is the key. Whether that is an intelligent way to play or not is not the question. The question was how do I get them to attack. I don’t like that it works that way, but that’s the way it works.

Your logic baffles me. Playing more matches as a MM defeats the reality of the situation? I’m sorry, but when was your made up internet ego more relevant to the topic than actual problem at hand? When did this become “I played X amount more than you so the problem isn’t there”?

Minions don’t always attack on 2 auto attacks, or at all in some cases. It isn’t user error, sadly, as much as I wish it was. Minions still have the same old problems as they did months ago, no fix, nothing. This isn’t even a spvp problem, its pve as well. It baffles me how arenanet misses this constantly.

this isnt a joke this is a problem i don’t know what situation he was exactly that his minions didnt wana strike but its a universal necro problem ,in pvp its worse they atack yes with a gigantic delay ,why don’t you see minion master ? because there becoming extinct

Best solution would be to make minions a separate set of buttons with there stance twards the enviroment AGressive/Defensive so they atack eny enemy on sight and atack your target when u hit it ,that way u hit 2 birds with one stone if your up against 1 enemy they atack it without much trouble and if there more they take the target off you so u can either escape or chose the one you want

I find it amazing that people are actually defending minions not attacking.

However, I think we can all agree that even if minions did function properly 100% of the time, they still wouldn’t be worth using. Everyone thats started a necro to be a minion master has been majorly disappointed.
But hey, this is a game where the warrior class has better gun skills than the engineer class.

@Bas

I used to run a MM build

Back then, we also thought using single target attack would work.

I tested it for 2 weeks in WvW.

If I casted my bones minions before the fights, they would rarely ever attack my target. Even if I pushed and pushed and pushed the auto attack and they just wouldn’t work.

I gotta say I don’t really care about any test that have been done that give different result then me.

@Bas

Did you like how I answered?

That exactly the same way Bhawb answered to everyone in this topic. How is it to be replied by someone who think he has the absolute truth? Even when you experience otherwise?

“I have x number of game played, I have this, I have that.”

The truth is : A guy only have 20 hour of MM necromancer. Yet if he can’t get is freaking minions to attack, there is an issue.

Anet agreed there was an issue, they psoted it on the forum. They never resolved it.

It’s cool you take the time to test and all, but telling me : “Hey this skills works fine 90% of the time” isn’t working well in my book. That’s like if Epidemic would randomly miss 90% of the time.

And even worse for me since 1 time out of 2, my bone minion would freaking stay on me during a fight and stay idle.

I respect your opinion and your test, but it doesn’t mean you are flawless and you know the “coding” behind.

We have different experience with MM. I think we can agree on this.
