I have a level 25 human ranger. I have not invested any skill points yet as I am not certain of what build i should follow.

The only certain aspect of it all , is that I wanna use a longbow and a great sword.

I have found many build videos on youtube , however I am not sure they are still valid right now. Many if not most of all are older than 5 months so if anyone could direct me somewhere I would be very grateful.

Short story :
I wanna build a glass cannon ranger that is equipped with LB/GS and I am looking for updated guides.

I’m not well versed in LB/GS builds so I figured I could point you to this guy. Just know that I hate you for running LB/GS and everyone like you. Just kidding. Not really. Maybe a little. But only a little. Welcome to the Ranger!

Some tips:

1 – Skill points can be refunded anytime free of charge whenever you are out of combat. This is amazing! Experiment around.
2 – Both greatsword and longbow have nice utility to keep you alive. With LB #3 you can get stealth to give you some breathing room and reposition, while GS 4 is one of the best skills in game. At range it is a 3 second block, at melee it will block and you will counter attack for good damage, and when you block you can throw it to inflict cripple and deal damage.
3 – Your main sources of damage are autoattack and maul on GS and the autoattack at 1000+ range on LB. These weapons are best used in power based builds, so you should look for gear with stats in Power as a primary stat. You can then add precision and ferocity, or toughness and vitality if you need to be meatier.
4 – GS #3 skill swoop lets you travel around the map quicker. If you don’t have a targe selected you will run in the direction you are facing.
5 – If you run around mobs with GS auto-attack you will get hit much less. The last attack on the auto attack chain gives you evade, whice means you don’t get hit by anything, and some mobs turn rather slowly anyways.
6 – For leveling your best buddy when you go melee is a Feline pet (one of the cats), or a bird pet (Owl, Raven, Eagle, Hawk). If you go ranged you can choose a bear or lizard as they are rather tanky, or go with a dog/wolf or a spider to control your opponents better.

For leveling you don’t actually need a guide/build specifically, as most NPC-s are easy to fight once you get the hang of GW2 fights. I’d suggest getting all power gear and use longbow if that’s your thing. However – and its a pretty big however – when you reach lvl80 and you want to go into wvw, or you want to do dungeons you will find that Longbow is not the best of weapons to have there. Therefore I would suggest getting familiar with sword, warhorn, axe off-hand skills, as these can be very useful in dungeons.

I recommend that you take it easy until you reach level 80 and save up on gold in the meantime. Once you get to level 80 is when you should begin to worry about what builds would suit you best, that is because of the high versatility that each ranger build brings. For example, when I first started I wanted a glassy long bow build myself, but I ended up hating now glassy it felt, and ended up liking the 1 vs 1 aspect of playing a ranger more and more using condition builds.

In terms of a good glassy build, you cannot go wrong using this set up:

Armor: Berserker
Runes: Runes of the Ranger
Sigils: of Fire / of Strength (On GS)
Utilities: As seen in the video
Traits: 6 / 5 / 0 / 3 / 0
IV, VII, XI / I, V / – / V / -

I don’t advise a New person to gw2 use Bezerker gear , as that requires you to know the game when to dodge, use your evades ect
and to a new person you’l just find it a unplesent time playing gw2.

don’t go zerker till you know and feel good enough to use that gear. also Bezerker gear is Generaly only pointed towards PvE mode.

in high lvl content like Fractals of the mists most people don’t use 100% Zerker .
for WvW a Zerker is only good for Bursting people till they die , if those players are paying attention you’ll have a Difficult time fighting.

for a new ranger I sugesst you to avoid using the Longbow and Bear pet to start with it may be good holding Single targets at bay.

but when it comes to the begining of you story mode , it won;t be able to handle to mass amount of mobs at such a low lvl.
list of good Weapon combos
Longbow + Sword/warhorn (Cat type lynx + marsh drake)
Axe/dagger – Sword+warhorn (Wolf+Drake
Shortbow + sword/dagger (pet drake+spider)
Greatsword + sword/warhorn (Murgallow poison bear+ cat Jaguar/lynx combos realy well with greatword and the blast combo field system the game uses)
Greatsword + shortbow

stats i’d start with to make it a bit easier for a new ranger , i would go with A stat called Rampagers armour looks for Power , Precision and condition damage.
these stats will work well with any set of weapons i’ve listed above.

rangers have a high learning curve so for now my Main advise is , look after your pet don’t forget to swap him out when his nearly dead.
keep a eye on the cooldown timers of your pets f2 attack skills and your own so you can time blast combo attacks.
and if you ask why not use a brown bear .
listed reasons why not:
the condi removal isn’t very effective for such a long cooldown and most conditions on the ranger can be cleaned off using Signet of Renewal (this is a must for a new ranger)
the other two utlities are of free choice but the first skill you should unlock i’d suggest Signet of Renewal.
reason two for not using a bear , if your build is of a condition type you direct damage will be low and the bear is classed as low damage/support so it’s not effective at supporting your build.

one good reason to use bear:
A cat+brown bear type with a Dps/beast master ranger type build , Using your cat as a main pet for as long as possible, and only swaping out to bear to help clean conditions of team mates.
though most of the time they will be able to handle things themselfs.
but in some situation lots of condition will be applied after they have used their skills. and you’ll have to know when to use the bears f2 and swap him out to maintain your outgoing damage.

its all to do with the play style you want but just keep in mind of how much damage you realy are doing with your pet rather than without work as one with it and not alone you can pull off some Amazing combos after you learn to correctly use your pets skills and not just a f2 .

if you need any more tips/ tips about pet skill rotations feel free to post and ignore the doom and gloom ,

Berserker gear on ranger is quite forgiving (unless you’re just yolo camping sword). If you’re ranging with a longbow, there is no reason to use anything other than berserker gear since you’re at a safe distance from most enemies. For beginners, GS AA evades and blocks make it fairly easy to melee most enemies in the game. You also get 2500 health from traits putting you at around a manageable 17.5k health, which is enough to not get 1 shotted by most mobs in the game.
