Can we just get rid of pets?
Many of asked for years for this.
Anet has consistently refused saying it’s the Pet class in this GW no matter if they can make the pets worth a kitten or not.
Here’s for hoping the Ranger in Gw3 (if there is one) won’t be shackled to a NPC.
If you don’t like the pets then this class if not for you. The only thing that differenciates a ranger from other classes is the pet, if we don’t have it then we might as well be a necro or warrior. I agree that they are not the smartest but not all of them are useless and there are many rangers who use then at the core of their strategy: sylvan hound, wolf, krytan drakehound, spiders just to name some. Some people use moas and I personnaly think they are the worst.
What I think is that there are rangers who start fighting and forget about the pet and its F2 ability. When they finally remember, the thing is either dead or not doing what they feel it’s supposed to be do. Its sad to see that the ranger forum has one of the highest amount of players that hate their class. The fact that this coincides with the amount of bad rangers out there is no surprise.
Athough we cannot expect pets to have an AI that can make split second descions like us I do agree that we need more pet to ranger interaction with regards to stats editing and looks. I’m thinking more in the lines of pets changing as we go up levels or progress on the personnal story. Just as we get rewards for map completion or personnal story progress we should also see visible or stat changes on our pets in the form of items, stat changes or skins.
It goes beyond the AI. Nearly the entire game was designed without even the slightest consideration for pets. They’re a complete liability in WvW. A lot of PvE content is very unforgiving to them. I could have my pet on passive and never do anything with it and it will be dead half the time.
Game is going on 2.5 years now. It’s probably time ANet wave the white flag.
I agree, there are times I wonder what they’re thinking when it comes to pets. In PvP I often notice their AI seems broken. But whether or not ANet does anything about it remains to be seen…
The main problem i have with pets is how everyone thinks they are bad. There are ways to tweak your build to make them just a little bit more surviable. My pets are always up in pve, because i make sure to keep an eye on them, and i use them properly.
I do however wish there was just a little bit more control of them, take the canines for example, it would be nice to be able to use the knockdown when i wanted them to. But other than that, i don’t have any huge complaints.
Oh and the name thing…please..please look into that!
If you want to play a ranger sans pet, good news, thieves and warriors already exist.

This would be nice but they also need to fix the pathing so pets aren’t running 50 feet away to run around a 2 inch ledge, and they need to give them a bigger cleave range so they can hit a moving target.
The cleave range should be easy to fix but since they are unwilling to fix the pathing issue maybe they should include a pet teleport in opening strikes so that your pet actually lends a hand.

I’ve always loved classes in games with a micro-manageable AI partner. The goal of a successful pet class is to have the pet become an extension of your character. I played a hunter in WoW for quite a few years and used my pet in combat to take care of specific tasks in fights like another player. The members of my guild treated Pickles the plague wolf like another member guild. There’s 3 main things that is implemented would make ranger pets into an asset that rewards skilled play.
1) Remove the lag time between giving a command to execute an f2 ability and the pet actually starting to use it. As it stands I need to hammer my keybind for it about 6 times before my pet stops and starts to use the ability.
2) Add a “go here” command. When I want to move my pet out of the way of a pbaoe the only option I have at the moment is to tell it to come back to me. Which usually results in dragging it through even more aoe creating a dead pet.
3) Give pets a dodge command. If my pets in a situation where it will be hit by a life ending hit let me command it to avoid the attack.
Lol pets are really good, only thing we need is more freedom in using them as well as versatility. And a few tweaks on the AI.
In all honesty i wish we had three pets.
A good ranger also shows how good he handles his pet. Sevans and Shadowpass are my idols.
i agree with what you guys say here the good the bad.
my personal exp is more that of wvw ranger roaming i have no problem with my pet well he is a bit slow at time :p.
my biggest problem in running in the zerg i play frontline ,backline, midline
yes play all tree roles believe or not. thing i noticed al this years ranger had ZERO love in group play in wvw. pets die within 3 sec because of aoe unless backline.
midline even swapping pets say byebye front line say byebye anyway. pets ore 100% useless when becomes to wvw it is a handicap. solutions i have none i am not a dev.
but letting the pet share your health and toughness and power and crit maybe
just simply let the pet share the hp of its master becomes pet and are supposed to be one.
or give us the option like mesmer have meaning let us be the pet it self let us use skill of the pet as it was our own that f2 doesn’t start from the pet but from the ranger instead. Rangers rely on a keen eye, a steady hand, and the power of nature itself. Unparalleled archers, rangers are capable of bringing down foes from a distance with their bows. With traps, nature spirits, and a stable of loyal pets at their command, rangers can adapt to any situation. <<<<< because this feels of sometimes.
if there will ever be an expansion or big update i hope that ranger get alot of love on the things that have been mentioned aon the forums a100 times or even more

Here’s what it boils down to:
1) If they aren’t going to let us option out of pets, we need much more control over pets… Uh, hello… Guard/Active still doesn’t have a keybind! That is a glaring problem.
2) AOE damage reduction in PVE on pets. Anywhere from 80-95%. Been to world boss Golem Mk II? Yeah, like that.
Really, those two things will go a long way to making them better in all game modes… Although I’m fairly certain PVE/WVW/PVP will have to have splits on #2. They are simply too different from each other in terms of needs.

You must be a bearbow pew-pewing from afar. If you are melee, your pet will die. You can’t recall your pet if you are melee… it stays right there by you taking cleave or aoe.
If you want to play a ranger sans pet, good news, thieves and warriors already exist.
You. You are hopelessly ig’nant if you think thieves and warriors play anything like rangers. Also tells me you don’t play a thief or warrior or you wouldn’t have made such a stupid comment that makes God cry from the sheer stupidity.

I play pvp, if you take my point as a joke, duel me and ill show you how to play a ranger
pets? yes! But we need a permanent stow for many situations (jumping puzzle, boss fights, my last situation: trapper with the invisible runes -.-)
And we need passive useful pets. Anet said that we can play pets agressive and passiv, but passiv playstyle is useless. We need more pets, which can’t attack hard but use group-buffs. Similiar to the nature spirits
I play pvp, if you take my point as a joke, duel me and ill show you how to play a ranger
Happy for you. I don’t pvp. I get no joy from it. So, tough kitten. So, what I need from a Ranger and what you need from a Ranger are two different animals (pun intended).
You’re asking for a rework; good luck with that.
PETS ARE MY FRIENDS!
I think the problem that presents with the pets are an overpowered ranger. A net has the same trouble with the necros and it’s minions and look! There are the two classes with the most problems and bugs in the game.
as I said before, I think that design the pet like an swapping weapon was a very bad idea from the start.
I think the ranger should be able to have 1 pet (yeyes I would love to have pets as Pokémon, many many) and that pet grow up (level up) with the ranger.
Instead charming a juvenile pet we should start by a pup and grow up to adult.
We should be able to customize more the pet, it’s looks and abilities and the pet should be able to hit moving targets and be stronger and not only a swappable weapon for the ranger, with a couple of more states, like avoid combat or attack only my attackers.
also I think would be a good idea to make the ranger take care of the pet, that if the pet die should stay dead the same as any player, until resurrected or rally to WP.
This would make the pets more useful and also more important for the ranger. Also enemy players would have any pet in cosideration when engage a ranger.

You haven’t played ranger in beta or the first weeks after release? The points in your post are the biggest disadvantages of the pet in the first state of the game. People complaining about a pet, which is 90% of time dead. People couldn’t revive other player, while a dead pet lying next to them. Ok, the micromanagement was good for customizing. Maybe there were too much casual players, who hasn’t understand the customizing part.
But two pets, swapping them and no need for reviving is the best improvement that anet has done for the ranger pet.
No. I like my pets thank you very much. I may be one of the few, but it’s one of the primary reasons I enjoy Ranger so much. They keep me company while I roam the mists.

If they removed pets it would be months if not years before the tooltips are corrected to no longer display pet effects. I’m sure you all know how tooltips and anet are, best leave pets in the game and hope they are fixed one day rather than shave a large portion of our dps for 0 compensation.
break. I feel like they should be back by now..”
Some people have serious issues… Ranger is the pet class of the game. If you don’t like pets, feel free to choose a class from the remaining 7
They’re seriously useless.
No they are not. They are far far away from useless. learn to play with a pet or roll a warrior. They are just like rangers, with the difference that anyone can play them well.
Necros can run very efficiently without’m and we should too.
Necros also have no spot in PvE meta, and are by far the weakest class in PvE. Want that as well?
The only thing I would change to Ranger pets is to put a lock on pet storage. Maybe it should cost a major trait for the lock but that is it. Ranger’s pets are awesome.
Good mobility, free dodges with blades, massive dps with ranged weapons, and the most capable pets make Ranger very friendly to use.
I like them, especially if used correctly. They are not perfect of course, but I’m able to maintain damage on foes in PVP even when I’m not the one doing the damage directly. Not to mention if traited correctly, they really can do some damage if ignored…
For my Ranger, much like my Necro, I just gave up on pet/minion reliance.
Now the Ranger actually fairs better in the pet department than Necro in my opinion, but it is still pretty dismal. Beast Mastery type builds at least look like they might be viable in more game modes than Necro Minion Masters.
But, for me, I just use ranged pets (devourers) to assist my 4/4/6/0/0 (Axe/Torch & Short Bow) Traited Ranger by adding to condition pressure.
Pet’s are also good sponges for player to pet condition transfers and the down reviving when needed.
It’s silly to argue that Rangers CAN’T be petless, I run my Necro without Minion’s all the time, and Trait accordingly.
Wish my Ranger could have the option to be more Druid-like and less “WoW Hunter” (I liked my WoW Hunter, but still)
The bad design within how the pets works runs deeper than I’ve read here.
Pets are a liability for you and for the group, all the time. No exception.
The other day, playing with a guardian in WvW i fought a ranger. That is rare because usually they stay far away but in this case i caught up with him.
The point: he tried to use LB#3 (that’s Hunter’s Shot) and he was hidden because of that. But because the pet followed him all the time, and the pet does not hide with that skill it wasn’t of any use.
Someone would say: Ah, but that’s not the intended used of that skill. Is intended to use when the foe is far away, so you shoot and hide while you send your pet. Seriously? Are we 9 and the foe, if its a player, wont see you as soon as you send the pet? What’s the point of that? With 3 seconds you wont be hiding much…
Pets die quite easily, even if they stay with you all the time. AoE skills kill then really easy.
Because they don’t stay close they might give your position up if your are hidden around a corner.
Maybe it’s only me, but the idea of a pet is a helper in battle, a friend for the ranger. Right now it’s just a disposable exchangeable weapon for that class.
As i said, pets need much love, and they are getting none from the developers.
Originally, there was supposed to be a Warden(beastmaster type) and Marksman(archer type) in GW2, but they later scrapped that idea and instead merged them into one.
/sadpanda
I troll because I care
Maybe ranger needs a new elite skill.

The only real suggestion here I could agree with is a permanent stow so that your pet doesn’t come out when you get in combat, but really, pets are amazing! Whether it’s PVE, sPVP, or WVW, they can deal a crap ton of damage if you have the right traits and often can save you if you get downed. As for…

we do have plenty of control of pets already; if your pet is dying to AOE all the time that’s on you. Often on bosses with lots of AOE, especially the sort where they make a ring around them and you have to get out of it, just step out of the AOE and call your pet back with f3 real quick. AOE damage reduction for your pet would just be way too overpowered, especially when you should be able to avoid this sort of stuff yourself. Also, is it really that hard to have to click on the passive/guard button? I imagine it’s not key-binded so that people don’t accidentally switch their pet off from passive when they’re trying to avoid mobs. Pets are fine how they are; if you don’t like them, it’s because you don’t know how to use them.

Pets are good but they are not fine, so allow me to disagree. They have pathing issues, they cannot stick to their targets and the best of it all, is that you cant control their skills.
Ex: You cant knockdown when you want an opponnent with the wolf. You can cripple leap when youre chasing, you can ask swiftness from a bird when the situation calls.
A little more freedom and fix the pet stats and I think we are good.
As a class mechanic pets don’t really feel very defining, but you could say that about a couple of classes…
IMO pets are not needed as this is the long range, evasion, hybrid class…
The lack of a high level bm build says that very clearly.

They’re seriously useless. Give me a skill tree that sacs my pet for harder LB shooting and i’ll be all set. Necros can run very efficiently without’m and we should too.
On the other end, give us a “pet-loving” tree thats all about man-to-pet-love. Give us unique models for this tree, so the same-o fugly models are for those hybrid rangers.
Fix them so they grow up, yes.
Get rid of them? Nooooooooooooooooooo.

Pewpewpew!
Give my longbow MOAR damage!
Or you could put pet on passive and pickup red moa and stalker for fury and might? Using f2 skills won’t interrupt your pewpewpew either!
There’s a reason my current Ranger is called ‘Why Did My Pet Die’, as they are so bad as to be useless in my preferred game modes – in fact, the only places they are useful is open world pve and spvp, as those are the places you don’t find massive aoe that kills both your pets in seconds.
Until they come up with a pet that can jump waves from the dragon, they are a liability there too- whether kept next to you doing nothing or sent in to do some damage, same result, dead pets and kitten damage output.
Maybe one day they will invent something that makes up for the lack of damage when both your pets are dead, so that you can avenge your dead pets..I even thought of a name for it ‘IWAY’ (I will avenge you)! Oh wait, that was in GW1, so no chance that they would ever use a skill from that in what is laughably called a sequel..
And if the only use most can claim for a pet is a 1.5-2.5 second cast for fury/might on F2, when it stand still while casting so i am dodged out of range by the time it finishes, then clearly the pet is broken..remind me again, how long does a warrior shout take to cast?
F2 skills should be instant cast, and then maybe the pet has a use- a fire and forget small boost before it dies on a long cooldown…
(edited by Baldrick.8967)
They’re seriously useless.
Yeah, since the Wolf’s AOE Fear has no use at all.. Oh, or how about the AOE Immobilize of the Drakehound? Yeah, useless huh?
Pro tip: Delete your ranger, roll another class..

Unfortunately the designers refuse to take the rangers mechanic into account when working on content, just like they are likely to play head in the sand when a single guardian built for reflection completely trivializes a fight.
They’ve stated that they will not remove the pet and are afraid for some reason to limit the negative impact the action (dodge or die) playstyle has on the ranger’s pet and the ranger’s effectiveness.
The short answer is, no.
Regardless of your view on the usefulness or brokenness of pets, ANet’s stance is very clear. Pets are part of Ranger, period.

I have a proposition, let us get rid of all those who make “lets get rid of pets” posts.
Wouldnt that be kewl?
I’d too be removed, because i made a few in the past, but hey, atleast then the game would be rid of all the whiners and perhaps the ranger class would benefit.

I like when my pet bird does a double 2k dmg hit with my LB 14k rapid fire , hello 18k killer move!
Again: if you’re saying reroll a warrior it’s extremely obvious you haven’t tried playing a warrior and therefore need to S_T-F_U because you have no idea how a warrior plays and how incredibly different it is from the Ranger.

Obviously you don’t melee with your Ranger at all in dungeons and fractals.. Or H_LL, you don’t melee anywhere with your Ranger that has AOE… Else you’d be agreeing with me about the AOE. Sure, if you bearbow pew pew from 1500 units you can recall them no problem.. but then if there are red rings they are going to path right through them until the pet gets to you. It’s painfully obvious you don’t care about having more control over the pet and pewpew from far away. That’s fine.
And yes, everything should have a keybind. EVERYTHING. It’s infinitely faster for me to hit a button on my naga or nostromo than it is to click the icons on the screen. If keybinds aren’t better, why do they have keybinds on f1-f4 when you could just click them on the screen with your mouse cursor? Rhetorical: BECAUSE IT’S F_CKING FASTER WITH A KEYBIND.
I’d rather anet introduce more pets with more abilities then scrapping it.
A perma stow option would be nice, but as many pointed out… it won’t happen.
Hopefully we can get them to agree to add more pets with more abilities.

pets are terribly dumb A.I, and they are more often of a liability than an asset. Those who say otherwise have clearly not done end game dungeons and fractals. Your. Pet. Will. Die. And your damage will be kitten. Theres no way to directly control their pathing. A few hits/cleaves from an elite mob already kills them. And if your pet cant deal dps most of the time your damage is so crippled

hey mate, just here to tell you that there is no official “end game” content in this game at this point.
There has been a CDI on the topic, which i think ended up with “raids” being the requested endgame format.
Please refrain from referring to content that does not officially exist and rather then spending time whining, find a proper pet selection for the proper occasion.
I do not deny that there is situations where maintaining pets health is seriously hard, but you have two pets, and it should be in most cases, possible to avoid, tank or protect them from most of the incoming damage.

…its very obvious you dont play hardcore pve (aka endgame). Do you melee on ranger? no? If you read through the thread you’d see there are many other players with the same problem. Optimal dps on ranger is melee. In melee your pet does kitten except stay dead 90% of the time. And dont tell me to “please refrain” from voicing my opinions.
Tanking damage for my pet?? why would you even do that instead of continuing dps on boss? Tell me, which dungeon or fractal do you play? So your suggestions are to be a dead weight to the party?

I just wish it would be able to hit a moving target. Tired of seeing it miss its f2 skill because an enemy moved out of the way. Same with its auto attacks. I understand if the enemy has swiftness and is faster than your pet, but if my pet is right up on him and can’t hit him there is something wrong.

“sorry guys for not dealing dps i’m gonna stay here and cuddle my pet so it doesnt die in 1 hit”
I use sword mainhand in all my builds short of my trollbuild, which i use to troll roamers in wvw.
Now sir, it seems that you are unaware what Endgame means. Infact there is none. Why is there no specific endgame? Because there is no content in this game that is restricted to only lvl 80 chars, and that offer you superior gear you cannot get elsewhere. Fractals is the closest thing you get to PvE content, but you can run fractals as a lvl 70, you’d drag your team down. reason i say it is possible is because ive done that quite a few times. albeit ive never bothered to run above fractals 15, mostly because i find fractals endlessly boring. That is however totally besides the point.
In terms of endgame, PvP is not it, because PvP is avaliable at level 19 and everyone is scaled up to level 80 to make the playing field totally equal. WvW is the only content where you need to be 80 to be efficient, but it is totally playable even at level 2…. just horribly annoying to get killed.
THERE IS NO CONTENT IN GUILD WARS 2 THAT EXPLICITLY REQUIRE YOU TO BE LEVEL 80 TO ENTER AND THAT ALSO GRANTS REWARDS THAT CANNOT BE OBTAINED OTHERWISE. THUS THERE IS NO ENDGAME.
The definition of endgame is “the final content before the end-credits start playin”. Therefore there is no endgame in Guild Wars 2. Because the best gear avaliable (ascended/legendary) is craftable and does require you to play just 3 hours of PvE. Matter of fact, i made my first legendary from almost pure WvW roaming/havoc. it took forever, much longer then i probably needed, but i got everything i needed, spent 3 hours in PvE just porting from waypoint to waypoint buying the final pieces and grinding CoF P1 speedruns for the tokens. My second legendary which i am making and not buying, ill just go play PvP, because thanks to reward tracks, i can avoid PvE in my pursuit of the best equipment, therefore PvE isn`t eligible for being even mentioned as “endgame” because at this point, you do not need to partake in PvE other then entering Lions Arch for dungeon vendors and Frostgorge for the Icy Runestones.
Stuff that is true “endgame” would be stuff like WoW raids. Where you could unlock “raid
Gear” which was better/had unique qualities or bonuses then other gear.
So, what is this endgame you are talking about sir? all i hear you talk about is another PvE time trail challenge, and with no official leaderboard recording the speedrun times, there is no official speedrun mode, thus there is no official dungeon leaderboard, thus there is NO OFFICIAL PVE ENDGAME.
The closest this game gets to “End Game” is the world tournament series. seeing as it is open to everyone to enter (granted you gotta be crazy good at the game). But even that only offers unique skins similar to fractals. Skins that hold no value beyond their estetics. Skins that cannot be sold or traded, thus they are simply personal trophies, cool personal trophies, but personal trophies non the less.
Good day to you sir.

I feel that the pet system originally as designed with archaic (for the standards of the combat system that the game uses) stand and cast format and thus is not very well integrated into the game as a whole, however at this point people have be learning to compensate a bit for it so I guess in the minds of the developers that means the problem solved itself.
But if they do seek to make further improvement they have to contend with if it is too good the the class as an I win button. So as oppose to most resent changes they tend to error on the side of very small steps on ranger.
All and all it could be worse ranger could get the Dhuumfire cycle that the necromancers got (many nerfs to open up an option that then in turn gets nerf and falls away) all for the sake of seeing more of them for a public event.
Yes I rememe the dhuumfire thing. Then I used to play a necro and i rembembe that time when playing the necro became survivable. Then they nerfed it and now you see very few necros around.
It seems that Anet are only interested in warriors/mesmer players. Most of the problems stated within this forums should be easily fixable.
They would better spend time in making new minis that fixing the broken classes.
Although I’m trying, i don’t really enjoy playing with warrior/mage type classes, simply because they are present in every single videogame.
necros and rangers classes are more interesting although Anet dumbed them down too much for casual gaming. That is opposite to any mmorpg game that needs to spend a lot of time in the game. This is not a COD.
So at this point just looking for any other no-farming no-pay to win mmorpg
