Car Crash using Ranger in ToL
and 55HP have a ranger so what oO
Kämpfe stehts fanatisch, denn du bist ein Menschenjäger!
And they surrendered the second game. I don’t want to say it was the ranger’s fault, but I will say that the ranger pick is indeed one of the reasons why they’ve lost.
Not it is not. CC got out rotated and out cc’d. Stop posting propaganda, there’s plenty of teams in ToL running rangers. 55HP being one of them who is in the finals. Also, CC made it all the way to semifinals.
Why propaganda? If you compare the ranger with thiefs and mesmers, we lack mobility and serious damagemitigation. They share the same playstyle but the other classes are way more slippery.
You’re failing to acknowledge how far both these teams have come with rangers in ToL EU, Semi-Finals and Finals. If every team that ran ranger lost in first round, I’d agree with you maybe, but it just doesn’t support what you’re spewing.
The point is, that there are fighting extremely experienced teams each other and from what I see, the rangers get outplayed pretty often.
(edited by HHR LostProphet.4801)
Is that a ranger flaw or a player flaw, the last ranger was a support role over a FPA role, they’re not going to be able to take the thief or mesm built for 1v1s. Who’s at fault here, Shad, who gets outplayed by Shiver or Niah who was trying to assist a decap. Shad had less than stellar outcomes every 1v1 or decap attempt against Shiver and while Shad is an amazing thief I don’t think anyone is jumping to the conclusion that “OMG PISTOL WHIP SO BAD, RESPEC”. It’s funny that you’re saying “Ranger’s lost this” yet make no notes of individual skill levels, overall team comp or team synergy. Overall TCG had better play and synergy. If you watch when boons were applied, they were pretty much all on point as opposed to 55HP whose boon application seemed almost random at times. I’m not going to say that this was a ranger’s fault as I don’t play their comp and after all, it did bring them to the final, but I’m not a particular fan of the Regen Ranger in tPvP but it worked for Niah and they’re a pretty god d*mn good ranger. There were plenty of teams that ran rangers and got straight stomped, also goes for necro and engi. Yet two high level teams made it to the end with ranger’s in their comp, but just because they lost doesn’t mean rangers are weak. By that logic, I suppose engineers are just utter trash cause they weren’t even picked up for the semis or finals. Yet, we all know, engi’s are pretty powerful opponents.
It’s funny that you’re saying “Ranger’s lost this” yet make no notes of individual skill levels, overall team comp or team synergy.

The pet actually won a few of the fights if you were paying attention, swap to a dog which knocked down someone stomping which allowed for them to rez and then take back the fight and win.
That’s only one usage i saw happen a few times, there’s probably more. And neither of the two Ranger builds were DESIGNED for 1v1, it’d be like taking a bunker build vs a dueling build and saying the bunker build is bad when it loses (it’d take a while, but it would lose in the end), which is totally false.
Now if they were running a 1v1 duelist ranger build that’d be one thing (assuming the ranger was playing on equal level of skill).
PS: Outplayed =/= bad prof, it means one player was better than another as shown by the thief on thief fights, Shad was being outplayed in most of them, does this mean his build is bad? kitten no, it means the other thief was a better player and was winning because of it.

I would guess that less than 5k people play in sPvP each day (Average over the past 6 months). I hardly see how this argument is relevant.
Skritt Happens
I’m going to say flat out that the builds that were being run were not optimized for how they were being played versus the matchups they were up against.
Niah on 55 hp monks had the best build versus what he/she was doing , but even then, there would probably have been better options (I was just talking about this on the podcast) that would have made that build better.
CC players haven’t, as far as I know, been playing together, at least during the ESLs, for nearly enough time going into the tournament. Nothing against them, they are all great players, and I personally root for Super’s team every time he plays, but that ranger build was spirits, and was not a good matchup imo versus a p/w thief, a s/d thief, a well played shatter mesmer, a hambow warrior, a well played D/D ele, or a well played engi (all of the builds at this level are pretty well played too, usually).
There is a serious disadvantage, and overall, the patch did just drop on the 15th, but there could have been some better gearing decisions made and build choices that would have brought more for the team as far as what you can accomplish as a player, versus just bringing the passive procs of the spirits, which imo if you go for full investment makes you give up a lot of your dueling capabilities versus all the classes I just mentioned, ESPECIALLY if you are still running carrion/forge.
I don’t mean to sound negative towards any of these ranger players though. I just feel as though they could have had much more optimized builds for how they were being played.
We’re in a “meta” transition phase though, so I don’t blame them as much as I will NA players if they try to force their build to work against bad matchups and bad situations and not succeed, because they have the entire EU ToL to study, and an entire week to work out and play a better build versus their competition.

Honestly I just want spirits to stay the way they are but see beastmaster and traps buffed to the point of being better than spirits if played well.
Also power ranger needs one more slight push. Again something that gets good in the hand of better players. It is already steamrolling noobs but good players will eat you + damage versus certain specs just too low.
HHR, you are so disconnected from reality that i am having doubts regarding your knowledge of any prof. There was some seriously good play involved there and if we are to lay blame on anyone, or anything. Then what cost CC the match was a series of poor decisions and timing that inevitably brought about their loss

So the way I see this is that rangers have 3 options to beat a thief:
1) Outlast him and deal constant damage. However at a certain point of knowledge and skill, you wont be able to outlast a thief, you will even barely hit them.
2) Use Sic’Em and burst the thief down while he is revealed. Yet I don’t see anyone using this skill.
3) Lock the thief down and burst him as far as you can. Yet again, at a certain skill level, you will hardly be able to lock a thief down.
Mesmers are in the same boat, they are squishier but fight from a longer distance.
Not to mention that both classes have far superior out of combat maneuverability.
honestly, niah was/is just useless with this build he run atm.
a elementalist can do this job for example much better then this kind of ranger build.
he’s job was to keep the close point, but i really think other professions can do this much better then a ranger atm.
so of course its also a reason why 55hp monks lost.
just look at one 2vs2 situation with niah and misha together (ranger with mesmer)
they just focused misha first and niah can’t really help the mesmer.
beastmaster or non spirit ranger builds just bring nothing for teams actually
i think its time to remove rangers from a decent team and take an elementalist,
maybe some peoples find some good builds, but i can’t think so.
i also played in the legend tournament, we got the 3. place.
but i was not 100% sure my role as spirit ranger was still so useful like in the past compared to some other professions we could pick.
so i still wait for a result of this ranger cdi topic, i saw nothing postive/amazing for ranger this patch.

This is off-topic but I’d like to say I appreciate these kinds of discussions about rangers, I get to learn stuff on how to get a lil better each time on my ranger.
I personally cannot judge these teams based on their ranger alone, it seems like their own decision making was not on par and that’s why they lost. Looking at each of the builds all I see are skilled rangers doing what they can to properly synergize with the rest of the team’s teamwork. I personally see a ranger’s role quite defined: team up with 1 other friendly, coordinate your strategies using a duelist build for the ranger, and bring down opponents while your teammates focus on the holding points aspect of the match. I often switch to a heavy condi-damage bunker build and go on 2 or 3 vs 1 in front of the enemy spawn just to hold them off for a good 30 seconds (minimum) so that my team gets a quick upper hand on the rest of the map.
Granted, these are the top teams out there so they have clear and defined strategies, but it’s the trump card, the ‘we predict they will do this so we will counter with that and gain the upper hand’ kind of strategies that win matches. For example in the final match between TDI and 55HP, TDI kept on sending friendlies to a pointless capture the middle match with their mesmer, while they could have morphed that function into ‘while my portal is down, me and x dude will cap their mansion’. Strategy wins matches, even with the kittentiest rangers you could find on your team.

It looks to me like the build choices were things that they agreed upon as a team, then again the player skill comes into account. The thieves were far too free to roam between points without having someone being able to stop them by themselves, something a duel built ranger could have accomplished. Also most of the action that occurred in the matches never found the ranger as a spot light, so it’s hard to judge their skill.

Support rangers are actually quite stupidly strong atm, I’ve been tweaking my build and can achieve ~750 healing per second (AoE not on myself) while my elite is up and ~420 healing per second AoE while he’s not, top it off with some AoE condi removal, AoE protection, perma swiftness, 3 other less constant heals, AoE vigor, and the fastest rezzing in the game and you’ve got yourself an annoying kitten team fight ranger.
Can the build do a lot in a 1v1? kitten no, you can bunker a bit due to the healing and general survivability the build has, but you’re sure as hell not gonna want to be there by yourself unless it’s required.

I may be running a similar build at the moment. Sigil of Water, Rune of the water, Nature’s Voice, HS, and Spirit of Nature. Moas also have an AoE heal.
I guess if you wanted you could add in the new Invigorating Bond, but your traits would be stretched pretty thin.

Water Spirit also heals in an area everytime you activate it for its actual heal, i know every 10s my allies get a 1k heal just for being in range of the spirit and attacking things, that’s pretty strong.

There just to much raw damage + condition damage to make healing on that type of scale worth while, your better of aiming for X amount of damage and mitigate incoming damage. But let’s be honest Ranger’s got replaced last patch we don’t have anything useful anymore apart from Spirit Elite.

I totally disagree. It’s not just AoE healing a spirit ranger brings, it’s group protection, group burning, group swiftness, lots of AoE condi removal, aoe CC from a multitude of sources, a cluttered targeting environment, AoE revive, group regen, and all on top of their own reasonable condi tank damage.
Whatever the meta changes in to, regen spirit rangers are still a very solid build.

dreaming is a nice thing.
you are speaking about elementalist when you give this positive examples a ranger bring into a group?
i think sol is right, rangers place in pvp teams is gone.
ele took this place now
what a spirit ranger dont brings into group or what others can do better now!
- aoe damage
- 1vs1 strengh, you die to nearly everything 1vs1
- AoE condi remove only if you drop your swiftness spirit (each 60s only)
- regen is worthles in a power might burst meta and you bring not so much heal to the group as ranger like a ele or guardian.
- rez spirit is not a huge problem for enemys to interrupt anymore, ppls learn.
it even dies really fast after all this over nerfs to fast aswell - fire and stone spirit die really fast if you play this kind of “bunker spirit ranger”
our friend ele is also back and kill them in 3sec or even pistol whip thief just remove them in 3s - teamfight spirit ranger builds are a easy target for mesmers and pistol whip thiefs, you cant dodge this stealth bursts always lucky
what a d/d ele brings into group
- much mobility
- 1vs1 strengh
- perma burning on node
- much direct damage + burning damage thanks to celestial and strengh runes
- really huge survive and huge aoe damage in the same time, bb rangers
snip
Well there’s your problem. Pure spirits were obsolete long before the latest patch. I run a regen spirit build which has permanent AoE swiftness and permanent AoE regen. As a pure spirit ranger, ya you die to pretty much everything 1v1. As a regen spirit ranger, you don’t to anything ever. Very solid team support or home defender.
Like I said, whatever the meta changes to, a regen spirit ranger is a very solid build.
Not sure where you got low mobility on rangers either, swords + AoE swiftness are very good for the minimal distances you travel.

You mean as long as you’re not soloing as you defend right? Because I have fully downed many – a – regen spirit ranger on 1 vs 1, not an easy feat but from a ranger’s perspective things are more manageable I suppose.
Ranger’s guide to PvP/WvW: http://tinyurl.com/oht3e9z
Maybe I should leave it alone, but Ragnar’s complete overdramatization is what harms rangers and the game as whole. You can’t theory craft an ideal solution to every single problem. So Spirit of Nature is interruptable? Great, they need take time out of a team fight to use an interrupt on it that they could have used on anything else. Meanwhile the spirit is healing the entire party the whole time. This is an elite skill. It’s not a utility skill. Putting down a healing spring in a team fight is a big deal. It cleanses condis from your friends on pulses, it gives them a water field to either leap through or blast, it heals, it gives regen, it covers an entire point.
You can’t just dismiss everything a solid build brings because you think the meta might be changing. Regen doesn’t work in a power meta? If you fail to kill someone (and that is target’s responsibility, let’s assume they aren’t completely defenseless), Durz’s build will get them back to full health in a matter of seconds, without them even needing their heal skill off cool down. That’s important.
Every action you save your team or cause the enemy team to take is a net plus. You win the match because your team composition and player skill cumulatively won it. YOU win the match, not the theorycrafting that everything you could possibly do is useless trolololo. It’s enraging.
/rant
Also I need some sleep and possibly a glass of wine.
Edit: awge, you’re right, downing regen spirit ranger is not easy, and you have teammates. You don’t need to last for more than maybe 2 minutes tops, and with protection, regen, healing, evades, Nature Spirit, etc., you should be more than capable of surviving. Often times I’ll just kill the FPA outright, but those are bad players because they didn’t leave. Note that ALL of that defense is passive except the evades. Alternatively you can support the team at mid.
One more thing before I finally finishing ranting, look how far Niah went with a build most of us here are probably a bit confused about. He played sword well and beat most of Europe. Imagine if he had more team support (wouldn’t have made much difference in the final match, but whatever.)

You found another gimmicky, situational build. Well done. I’ll wait for some big changes, so we don’t have to theorycraft through every possible option to push one certain aspect of our build to have some means in PvP. Ok, ranger can do some things for your team but all classes have atleast one build which is stronger than any of ours are. We are still an independent class with unique mechanics, so we aren’t completely worthless. Yet we can’t build up on that. We have to compensate far too many flaws first before we can invest in something meaningfull. As long as this situation persists, I wont acknowledge the ranger as true competitor for anything.

I would just like to state that in lv 30 fractals me and my group of zerkers were literally able to face tank (well I say in the back mostly because I don’t NEED to be next to them and my healing is stronger on allies) just about every encounter due to the constant healing.
One of our warriors even made the comment that when I had spirit of nature down that he essentially had 3 healing signets ticking ONTOP OF the other healing I was giving out as well as the AoE protection, and Vigor, and Swiftness, and Fury, and then my bears condi removal (2condis is often enough to get the job done and I’ve got SoR incase it isn’t).
Last I checked, players in PvP don’t deal nearly as much damage as most lv 30 fractal mobs and I know my healing power isn’t lower in PvE than PvP, and seeing as how I’ve been running a variation of this build since about launch and it’s always WORKED it’s apparent that you just are in denial.
And personally, after all these support buffs and the shift to a direct damage meta, this build hasn’t been stronger. Because as Fluffball said, if (when) my team survives the burst damage they heal up to full very quickly and IF they don’t I can Rez them to 75% health due to mercy runes + ZS being nearly broken now.
I did give up my damage for my build because I prefer a more “bunker” role than damage, and it makes the enemy team killing me that much harder (especially since my team guards me in team fights). Will I win in a 1v1 vs a duelist build? kitten no, my builds not designed for 1v1s at all, however I can normally hold out (even in 1v3s) long enough for help to show up.

He was actually running the older BM Bunker build (only swapping out the BM Traits in the line for the Group utility ones)
Which worked great….when our primary DPS pets did a ton of damage, like Birds/Cats and Drakes…now they do alright damage..which isn’t bad.. but that version of the build lost its umph back then.
Its why I updated the build and changed the pets to be more of a Support CC/Condition apply setup.

I was actually wondering if he ran the traits he did because he didn’t know there was an internal cooldown on the new BM healing skill. He played so well (even killing shad 1v1 ) that I can’t really believe my own hypothesis.
I just find his build confusing.
His playstyle was really awkward to me as well, it was like he only pressed a button when he cognitively knew he wanted to. He often waited briefly to see what his opponent did, rather than just reacting instinctively. Or it felt like that to me, I don’t know.
I have been playing the BM spec old school style for a good 10 days now and I have had good success.
It is true that our pet damage has been nerfed, but after that we got a solid mighty swap buff that is now working on us, and vigorous training works on all families.
I am actually using quickness swap too, as 3 seconds is enough time for a quick rez/stomp.
Now, if we want a beastmaster supporty build i would suggest using HS with runes of water(it adds a 1k+ AOE heal) and the fern hound with the new BM trait. From those 2 you will get a clear 4000ish AOE heal every 30 seconds on top of regen and condi removal.
