all I got to say is our class mechanic got nerfed and it hurt every single one of the ranger builds even ones that didn’t focus around bm because all pets got nerfed regardless of spec and the only trait worth it in the beginning of the bm trait line was turned into a grandmaster major trait. any buff that we got does not equal the nerf we took when pet dmg was slashed so for the love you devs hold over this game give us back something that will make up for the loses that all ranger specs took with this patch PLEASE. this is the most disappointed I have ever been with ranger pets and the class since launch, and I am sure I am not the only one that feels this way.

Pets were too powerful in spvp with beastmaster bunker builds. But pets got nerfed across the board in other game modes also. Think that’s the main complaint.
It’s not like they aren’t able to split them like you can see from some of the mesmer notes
Split the hit point values of clones and phantasms by game type:
Increased the phantasm base hit points by 55% in PvP and WvW.
Increased the phantasm base hit points by 270% in PvE.
Decreased the clone base hit points by 25% in PvP and WvW.
Increased the clone base hit points by 28% in PvE.
End result is that how they did the pet nerfs comes out as a lazy/unprofessional.

Seriously though, good update. Hopefully the next update for the ranger brings it back into the metagame a little, as they were always performing a niche role in spvp to begin with, and while that’s still possible, people are much more aware of how rangers are lacking in competitive play now, and with the last update rangers have been placed virtually bottom tier in the eyes of the community.
So, hoping that changes, but in the meantime, thanks for forcing up my playstyle. If anything, its breathed a little life back into the game until I settle down into a new playstyle.

BM builds were not too powerfull in PvP either . Just compare them to any other dominant builds of other classes, or count the games on top level play where a team would take a ranger over an ele or guard . Not many ? Any Did not think so ..

I think the issue was players not being able to avoid pet damage while trying to contest a point. Which I think is just silly.

the problem is not the pet. the problem is we are forced to use that nearly useless thing. the pet cant damage anything what move and die from 2 hits. except if u trait fully on pet. but in that case, its still useless. it die after 3-4 hits, still cant hit targets and the ranger sacraficed his own power…
we want minipet like pets, whats grant stacking, passive buffs!
example: +20% crit chance for self, or u hit f2 and the whole party gain 10%

They have their one game mode that every change currently revolves around, and they only have limited time for each class. And each class got about the same amount of attention at the end of the day. …there’s really nothing to over-analyze here.

I’m inclined to believe this. An assumption that there is an amount of ill will against the ranger among the devs is basically a conspiracy theory, and I’ve never considered those appealing.
However, if it’s not the case of ill will, then I can’t help but start having doubts regarding competences and consistency of some people working on the development team, as well as whether they have any general idea what they want the ranger to be.
It’s not even about the nerf to pet damage. I can live with that, even if it has been done on the basis of complaint of bad players, who don’t know anything about movement on the battlefield. I can even live with the nerf to shotrbow’s range. But why do you try to fix certain parts of our skill set without working at the core of the issues?
The new trait, Nature’s Voice, is nice, and it actually makes shouts worth something. But why do we have to invest 30 points to make shouts useful at all? Not to mention how clunky it is, even if effective, to stack regen and swiftness with Guard.
Same goes for spirits. You nerfed them to the ground during the beta, because you judged them as OP. But you carried the nerf out in a way that completely broke the whole mechanic. And yet you keep buffing the spirits time and time again, despite the fact that simple buffs help very little with the squishiness and unreliability of those skills.
And of course, there are certain issues outside of the skill set itself, such as still existing root in the Sword 1 (still a big turn off for some, even if the weapon itself is pretty good), or the lack of pets survivability in dungeons and most importantly, the problems pets have with hitting moving targets. My issue here is that you’ve known about and acknowledged those problems back in 2012, and we’re still waiting for you to fix them. I can understand that they’re probably harder to fix than one might expect. But if you can’t, at least avoid creating new content in a way that adds insult to injury.
Myself, I’ve been maining a ranger since day one. I don’t really have alts, as I’ve never been much an alt player in any MMO I’ve ever played. And nowadays I have less time for gaming than I used to anyway. But I’ve invested a lot in my ranger, and I’ve enjoyed my time spent doing that. I rarely had thoughts about switching to another class. After 25.06, I simply adapted my build to new conditions.
And then I decided to run tha Aetherblade Retreat yesterday with a couple of friends. We’ve completed it, having a team of Guardian, Ele, Mesmer and 2 Rangers. I even had my “moment of glory” when due to my hight survivability I was the one who had to kill last 2 golems in the fight against Frizz (shame I realized so quickly that any class could’ve done it, and probably faster). But the dungeon as a whole left me incredibly frustrated. Why did you go for the same solution again? This kittened spam of AoEs? Any idea on how was I supposed to keep the pet alive during Frizz or Mai Trin and Horrik encounters? How was I supposed to make the pets actually hit the constantly moving enemies? Or how was I supposed to place the new, improved spirits to make them work there?
If you still can’t fix basic issues that plague the Ranger profession, at least try to avoid creating content that is punishing players for having broken class mechanics. I think I’ll start to play some alts seriously. I think I may add a Norn Ele or Necro (probably Ele) to my Norn Ranger. Wanted to roll a Norn caster eventually anyway, really like the look of their cultural light armor…

Chopps suggestion that Companions Might is any sort of help is quite amusing, seeing as most decent players in wvw can avoid ever being hit by the pet, rendering that skill completely useless- if your pet is even alive after the first 3 seconds of any decent scale fight.
What about when you are defending or trying to take a tower? That skill is a wasted slot, and now to use your sb you need to stand even closer to the rain of AC, which your pet will stand in and die in seconds.
Single reason they nerfed sb range- so thiefs can get away easier when you unload lb, switch to sb as the thief is running away and wtf kitten range, no longer able to hit as the thief is out of range.
Might be able to solo roam around and catch a few 1v1 with your gs/trap/everything to allow your pet to actually land a hit but in most situations in wvw rangers are now a very poor second best to every other class – even engineers have better roaming builds, can hit from walls and onto walls from way further away with constant aoe, and are more useful in groups.
As usual, ‘balance’ has been solely dictated by spvp to the detriment of everyone else playing the game.
I’m glad I don’t do dungeons (or pve at all) as after this patch the chances of getting a group as a ranger are even lower than they were before.

After the last update I think it’s exactly what they wanted, just to troll some ppl, cause they couldn’t be really serious with that.
For once I will not talk about the nerfs, but about Longbow buffs. They needed 10months to figure out what even casual players knew after few days of playing. Really Anet? Are you really listening the ppl and read the forum?

The problem is the community. No, not like that. Like this: the ranger community tries to help each other with this class.
Over time, we’ve found what does and doesn’t work. As more and more players share this information, that class or the mechanics involved get nerfed.
An example we all understand is the Spirit Ranger in beta. And then, the bleed ranger. Both powerful, and both nerfed because . . . well, that’s another topic.
And now, it’s Beast/Bunker’s turn for the same reason. Good players share their knowledge. And they share it here. Sadly, I’m here to tell you that was a mistake.
I don’t want those players to stop sharing their knowledge, but it’s a double-edged sword.
Do the Devs read this board? Obviously. But it’s not for the reason you think.

It’s very simple, I like Range over melee. I like it because it’s the logical advantage. It’s usually also slower and more focused. Do not delete this completely in this game. I also like pet’s, do not make them irrelevant.
If you wanted to nerf pet’s, how about unleashing them? Allowing them to climb once again? There has to be a give and take…..
Oh, and Thieves are still quite OP in WvW. Work on bringing down the burst, TY. It’s only been mentioned since launch…..

look, anyone works in a programming related field should know the importance of having a test server (or in my web development job, a QA/staging server to test codes before push them live), but up until now, Anet still doesn’t have one. Doesn’t that show the competence level of the developers and the team managing the game? How many times have they patch something and end up breaking something else?

As far as I’m aware they have a test server, it’s simply not a public test server. And after my experience with MMOs, I’m rather skeptical about the influence on the quality of patches PTS can have. Take SW:TOR as an example. That game has a PTS, which so far failed to prevent a few patches that broke the game completely from being released and only fixed afterwards.
To be fair, lack of PTS doesn’t really have much to do with the issue at hand either. Issues Ranger faces are not related to some bugs that were caused by recent patch, but to certain flawed design decisions and mistakes, some of which date back to the beta phase. Sure, PTS could give players a chance to voice their discontent with balancing changes before they went live, but that’s it. No guarantee voicing such discontent would actually get us anything.
However, the fact that I’m skeptical about the usefulness of PTS doesn’t change the fact that I started having doubts regarding whether people responsible for this profession are really right for their job.

I have to agree this comes across as trolling. Not only is he lying right to our faces but he is doing so after a completely unnecessary and excessive nerf which has justifiably enraged a lot of people. Any fool could have seen that coming into the forums with a trite, dishonest one-liner complete with cutesy smiley face was only going to enrage people more.
Apparently we are supposed to clap happily like trained seals whenever a dev shows up here, no matter what he says.
The only way these Devs will wake up, is if players stop playing the game and paying for this game en mass..
You want Ranger fixes stop throwing money at these people who break your Profession, when enough stop paying and move away these people will wake up, but not until a large enough group does..

The ANet bug fix/skill/trait/signet/rune/sigil/balance team is the worst I’ve ever experienced in any game ever. The game is still riddled with bugs and even after a big trait update, there are still plenty of useless traits and bugs. Even new traits are bugged and not working at all, like Evasive Purity.
The worst part is that they are putting shame on the other hard working people at ANet, like those doing the design and sounds. Have some respect for them and fix these aweful bugs and horrible skills and traits and sigils and runes.
It’s been a year and the game is still one of the most buggy I’ve ever seen. In respect to traits/skills/sigils/runes especially. They can’t even fix all the tooltips. Half of them are telling lies. And if they DO fix a tooltip, they add it to the update list as a whole bullet point like it’s some kind of major achievement.

I truly believe you care, but you made the wrong changes.
Why not buff the pet’s A.I. if you were going to take away some of it’s ability to do damage? In dungeons and WvW it is sometimes impossible to keep your pet up and with it your damage and support. Why not either make it dodge with the master or give us a way to make it evade alone? Better yet, why not buff the master of the pet so that it isn’t so dependent on it’s unreliable class mechanic? For example, a warrior an either choose to rely on it’s adrenaline for buffs or damage, or not. A ranger can still be dependent on the pet, but at least make it a force to be reckoned with alone. I know I don’t let the stupid pets touch me in WvW and it can be a bother to get my own pet to make contact too.
I love the game, but my favorite class and toon are struggling to be part of a team if we can’t support like the support classes or damage like the favorite DD’s. So what is left for us?
I’m not saying I don’t like all the changes, I not saying I can’t be dangerous, and I’m not saying I can’t do something. I’m just saying I cant do any role as good as another class and that the ranger lacks a niche right now.
Can we please put the future/next southsun/dragon/pirate pointless update on hold and instead fix what is currently in the game now? I completely feel like there is a waste of human resources here, and I know what people will say, “they are different departments and they cannot help with those items”. Well then, teach them for kittens sake. Stop adding addition layers of complexity to something that needs fixed.

Exactly. My post (conveniently right above Sharp’s) really hinted at this. Maybe I could be more direct, but Anet themselves could be a lot more direct on this as well. We know from past history that their “Balance” is currently lacking the only 2 people who ever made PvE considerations for the soul sake of PvE (& now WvW). And those people aren’t Isaiah Cartright and Jon Peters… and We know from what sPVP’ers have been saying that even they’re not consistently happy with the ‘vision’ behind those Tourneys & the complete lack of GvG or other Objective & WinCondition modes. But atleast those sPvP’ers have SOMEONE they can direct those frustrations towards and as this update proves… actually see those things get changed.
But where the hell is our PvE representative on the Balance team? This isn’t about Rewards. Colin is handling those and we’re patietntly *(or not) awaiting his detailed blog on it. We need Robert Gee or someone new who will stand up for the classes being “cared about equally” in this other game mode too, no matter how gimmicky or “farmy” or “zergy” that game mode might be. Failing that, we atleast need a better Test-Server program here. To Hell with this super-secret private “Krewe” thing, it’s obviously not working anyway if so many things get leaked from it anyway!

I can’t mention developer names or I get infracted but if you notice, after the last nerf (pre-25 June), there was another developer that stopped in here for the soul purpose of trolling. There’s no doubt at this point, that’s all the Ranger forums are good for, developer trolling.
all i can say is…i’m glad i have 7 level 80’s so when they do absolutely awful nerfs to already underdog classes, i can just go play one of my other ones. I won’t cry about it…i’m already desensitized as is. They have been ruining classes/builds/rune sets/armor i worked hard for since shortly after launch…and they’ll keep doing it. Unfortunately i’ve never experienced so much nerfing and “rebalancing” in any other mmo i’ve ever played (everquest 1, 2, AoC, Aion) because they knew to balance it before release as best they could. And no one complained. Anyway. I’ll just go play my guardian and necro again now…but speaking on necro. I LOL’ed when i saw how much they were buffed. I already thought my necro was great and had absolutely 0 complaints about it…and now they make them even better? man Anet is on top of things…. But yeah, sb rangers with pets meant to do dmg in WvW now is completely worthless and every class is truly better than they are now in wvw. Proof’s in the pudding, i have 7 fully geared level 80’s and i’ll gladly go play one of them instead now. Though i was enjoying my ranger

also, this would be nice. i’d love to take my top-level ascended back off my ranger and give it to my necro.
Personally, I feel if we all just quit posting on forums and making videos and helping the gw2 community then and only then will they make a change in our favor. If you want to make a difference give Anet the silent treatment just stop posting on forums, stop purchasing gems, stop making videos of rangers and putting it on YouTube, etc etc…
The problem I see is how it is bringing this up on the side of Anet.
That is, they first have to answer a simple question.
1) Ranger class is where it should be?
in case (1) is negative.
2) where we want to be the ranger class? What role within this world we want for this class?
once answered this.
3) what changes should we do in this class and / or in other classes for the Ranger class is where it should be.
I think Anet can not even answer the question (1). Should start there.

What would you expect from a Ranger? A balance between strong ranged skills and low survive at melee right? Why can´t you keep it as simple as that? Have you ever seen, in the whole history of humanity (or fantasy), an archer with a greatsword at his back and no range? I know its a fantasy game but there are limits to be respected for consistency. At the moment we have rangers with greatswords, low dps, and no range. We relly half of our dps in a pet that can´t hit moving targets, can´t dodge, and dies in seconds.
It should be a hard class to master rather than a warrior. I don´t expect to resist a hammer blow. If i am in that situation i am dead and its ok, blame me! but make me deadly from afar.
I´ve been a dev for about a decade now and i know how frustrating can be to get this kind of feedback from the ppl you want to satisfy. But honestly, what is a ranger in GW2? A warrior in medium armor shooting unicorns and rainbows? Come on, just tell us you don´t like them so we can pick another class or choose another game.

Yes, we care about the forums. We also care about all the classes equally.
Then could we respectfully request an explanation of what the changes are supposed to be aiding/addressing, as done frequently when large skill change patches were made in GW1?
Because at the moment, it is hard to comprehend why many of the changes made to the ranger were considered necessary (in my case, particularly in pve).
Having put in the effort to make the Dreamer, I’m feeling particularly confused and dismayed that it’s purpose has been changed – it no longer fills the purpose of long-range weapon, nor does enough damage to fill the purpose of melee weapon…so to use the weapon I spent months crafting I now have to sacrifice the utility of one of my weapon swaps…
What this guy says. Trade me my dreamer for another legendary weapon that may be useful on ranger. Thinking something melee. Worked so hard all to have it jacked to hell.
Agree with both of these. I would never have crafted The Dreamer with the current shortbow range. I doubt I will ever be able to afford another legendary as I got incredibly lucky to get this one – so now I am stuck with a legendary weapon that is worthless.
Also – when I joined my WvW focused guild we had six or seven people playing ranger every night in a group of 25 – Last night I was the only ranger left. Everyone else has rolled other classes and put their ranger on the shelf. I think I am only playing mine because of the time, effort and gold I have invested in it, not because I am really enjoying it any more.

What would you expect from a Ranger? A balance between strong ranged skills and low survive at melee right? Why can´t you keep it as simple as that? Have you ever seen, in the hole history of humanity (or fantasy), an archer with a greatsword at his back and no range? I know its a fantasy game but there are limits to be respected for consistency. At the moment we have rangers with greatswords, low dps, and no range. We relly half of our dps in a pet that can´t hit moving targets, can´t dodge, and dies in seconds.
It should be a hard class to master rather than a warrior. I don´t expect to resist a hammer blow. The class is called ‘Ranger’, not ‘Archer’. What you’re describing is an archer (which you admit to in your own post), making your entire ‘point’ moot. One of the accepted definitions of a ranger (as in, what’s in an actual dictionary): “A person who ranges or roves”. Going by that, a highly mobile, melee build—which is accessible to us—is more in the spirit of a ‘Ranger’ than a stationary bow-wielding build.
I am getting really tired of this ridiculous “It’s ’range’r not ’melee’r!” argument. It is laughable.
