Flanking Frustrations
We should just have unconditional bleed on the shortbow. A bunch of other classes do on their auto attacks, and if the shortbow is our condition weapon, give us akittendefault condition spammer. I can’t think of another class that has to deal with this flanking crap as much as Rangers, and with no additional reward.
I wouldn’t have a problem with it, if there were predictable aggro patterns. As it stands, I don’t have any way to guarantee I get my flanking advantage, because I don’t know how to shake enemies off of me when they decide to charge me. I can dodge and circle strafe and cripple them all day, but it doesn’t take any amount of time for them to face my character and nullify my flanking ability.
It’s especially frustrating lately, because there are quite a number of Risen that just sort of erratically jump around the area. It’s hard to keep them in front of me, much less get in flanking position.
Yes, some mobs have unpredictable aggro patterns and I think it is intended so ranged have to kite sometimes.
shortbow surely is not so good(dps wise) when multiple mobs charge to your face, that’s why the game has switch weapon mechanic so you can adapt to situation where your main weapon is not excel at.
My suggestion is use dem axe/torch & traps.
With the weird aggro in this game, trying to flank is incredibly frustrating. Mix in some spell fx, a bunch of people all around the target, many mobs being no different in size than the players, and flanking is all but impossible.
I would say get rid of the flanking. You have to move so much and trying to stay behind an enemy is hard at times. Change your traits out of flanking.
The problem is with the Shortbow, specifically. Condition builds rely on the bleeds it stacks, but getting into flanking position is a royal pain in thekitten And it’s really not any stronger than Power/Prec/CritDmg builds.
I don’t mind having to kite every once in a while. What I do mind is when every single pull devolves into circle-strafing and watching my bleeds cap out at 2-3 stacks because I can’t get a flanking shot off to save my life.
This is especially frustrating in the personal story, when every single one of the half-dozen mobs in the pull decide they’re going to attack the PC, instead of spreading around the several NPCs that are twiddling their thumbs within two inches of me.
I use Axe/Torch every time I get multiple mobs to kill at once, but I shouldn’t have my shortbow made nearly worthless almost every single pull.
Yes, I agree, it’s frustrating to get a flank position all the time and shortbow dps really lacks at that time as do all of our other weapons.
Shortbow attacks way too quickly for an unconditional bleed application. The way it works now is fine, and actually requires some skill to use. I’d by far rather have the fast attack speed than an unconditional bleed.

Actually the reward is a more powerful bleed than what engineers get on their pistol auto attack. Not to mention a trait that increases flanking damage.
But if they took away the flanking requirement, you could literally let go of your keyboard and sip on some tea. Lol you wouldn’t be REQUIRED to do too much anymore. The problem is the shortbow is one of the fastest ranged weapons that can stack bleeds. There should be another way to make it more interactive. Or perhaps nerf the bleed a little if we allow it to be applicable on auto-attack
An interesting solution would be to make flanking more rewarding by slightly buffing the bleed for flanking and adding a nerfed bleed for not flanking.
I don’t mind having to “show a little skill” in getting my flanking position. My problem is the frequency with which I find the mobs coming straight for me, forcing me to do the circle-strafe thing right in the middle of melee to get my bleeds ticking.
Doing it once in a while is fine, and expected, because things are going to attack you. Having to do it literally every other fight just becomes annoying, monotonous, and frustrating.
Superior Sigil of Earth combines with 50% crit chance at level 80 is more than enough to stack bleeding 10+ times on a single target even when not flanking. In my opinion, it is the must have sigil for a shortbow user relying on condition damage.
