I think we flooded the CDI...
Reading that thread makes me angry..
Because its filled with a lot of players who honestly shouldn’t be making suggestions about the class, Because they are freakin clueless about it in the first place.

Everyone has the right to have a idea of where the class might go… just because it’s not your idea don’t make it less valuable.
Some ideas I don’t agree with (looks like these players want to make a lesser war out of the ranger), some ideas I agree with (though I think they would need tweeking), and some are just crazy (in both the good or bad way). But they are all visions of what rangers can be / of what their definition/their role might be… because, right now, we have none…
This thread, as I see it, was made to let out some steam, instead of polluting the CDI. It achieved its purpose…

No, they don’t. It’s like when people say everyone has a right to their opinion. That little cliche should be changed to everyone has a right to their informed opinion. People that don’t have a clue what they are talking about yet still open their piehole to bless us with their opinion.
Let out some steam as in…let the kids vent a little and get some stuff off their chest… we already know what we are going to do kinda thing?

Chinese release on the 11th, I wonder how chinese players will react to rangers and especially pet after 1.5y or western release….

I stand by it… Everyone has right to their opinion…
just in this subforum, there’s a thread that discuss gard…
Some say that, as a shout, it shouldn’t have a cast time, others, that for the short CD it has, it’s ok…
None are wrong, none are right… We are not in a kid’s world where all is white/all is black… there are too many nuance for only one solution to exist… and it won’t be up to us, the players, to decide of the course of action…
In the end, whatever proposals are made, devs will take out of it what they will.
Some seem to think devs stopped following the CDI because it got overwhelming… I’d say it got overwhelming for the lack of directions… Not because of clueless people, but because no clue was given beforehand… Just an indication by thread owner at the beginning that “we saw the ranger’s thread with a red post; to start getting the discussion going, why not discuss point abc”.
It was obvious that that CDI thread would get “flooded” with ideas…
No fixed limits from the start, no real discussion between proposal… bah. It’s all it can be in the circumstances…
It wasn’t flooded by unique poster Proposals though. It was flooded by the same exact people adding 10-20 proposals all saying the same basic things while accomplishing NOTHING as far as naming an actual direction/theme that the ranger needed to go in.
Every little proposal was based off some personal grudge or brainfart each person has in one little specific part of the game they do the most of … which if they’re STILL actually playing ranger, is either Conquest, pointless WvW regen Roaming, or soloing Long-Bear like a bot but with slower reaction time and only slightly better environmental awareness. There might have 2 or 3 other people who ran Fractals too but that’s also a niche.
I never even got a chance to make a single formal proposal myself because of it.
If the Devs are real professionals about this, they’ll start a second round of this instead and just narrow the entire discussion down to the things they were already planning to do themselves anyway and just focus the entire discussion around that instead. And again, some flood control would be nice so that the forum-illuminatti (who post more than they actually play games) don’t bogart the entire thing.
(edited by ilr.9675)
I actually posted a ranger related topic back in the beta about the falcon and eagle bird pet making raven noises. It was fixed in the very next patch so that it made eagle/falcon noises. So yes, I did help contribute to that getting fixed, you’re welcome. I’ve also posted more than a year ago about pet icons being mixed up (eagle and falcon shared the same icon), but my posts were largely ignored (one of the drakes still has the wrong icon). I’ve also posted my frustrations about not being able to keep names for pets (name is deleted if you switch it out with a different pet). I’m sure I’ve posted more, but I can’t remember anymore.
Anyway, I’ve played my ranger for more than 2,000 hours. I’m pretty sad at the various nerfs and direction they’ve taken with the class. Once the dev chimed in and told us they weren’t going to fix the pet, and they weren’t going to buff weapons/skills due to power creep, I honestly knew there was no longer a point to the thread. Fixing the pet AI so that it could attack while moving so it could DPS more often would be enough to basically fix the ranger alone.
Honestly, Anet should have been prepared for this. The only way they could not have been expecting rangers to ‘win’ the CDI and for a year and half’s worth a valid (and nutty) suggestions, complaints, bugs, etc. to come flooding in, is if they have been paying no attention to any feedback or forums whatsoever and aren’t running any kind of numbers themselves to see how things are going. Apart from anything else, this was a good opportunity for them to do some good PR stuff with the community, and it has so far failed spectacularly.
I’m pretty disappointed, actually. I never expected anything huge (total pet AI overhaul or something), but I thought it would at least be a chance for the devs to have some back and forth with players and look at ideas, even ‘band-aid’ ones, that would at least make us more balanced and viable and improve our QoL…maybe some trait changes, or a fix to the sword rooting. At this stage, all we know is that we’re not getting burst and potentially all the other professions are getting nerfed. Yay?
For me, if we’re not going to get meaningful responses to a thread started by Anet specifically with the intention to discuss rangers, it doesn’t seem that likely we’ll get dialogue anywhere else. I have less confidence that Anet is at least listening and trying now than I did before the CDI started, and that is a shame.
Edit: having seen Chris Whiteside’s post in the other CDI thread it appears my expectations regarding dev input to the CDIs was incorrect and it was mainly just meant to be us providing ideas, which I guess we have done pretty thoroughly at this point.

Then there’s stuff like this:
Just because we don’t reply doesn’t mean that we aren’t discussion or reading the proposals and discussions being put forward in the thread. It would be a huge evolution for us as CDI members if we could just get over this ‘Assumed’ barrier.
Chris
Look guys,
I know it’s super depressing to type up a whole bunch of stuff and not see any response. I also know it’s difficult to give feedback without knowing if the discussion is Blue Sky or Battleplan, and given Ranger’s lack of overarching place in combat you’re flying blind either way.
But, Welcome to Feedback.
That’s kind of how it is when you’re feedbacking something that really needs it. If Ranger was polished and built on a great foundation through which they could give us excellent direction…we wouldn’t be in this mess in the first place.
If you’re having a hard time collecting your thoughts, just remember; you always know how you feel about things. ‘this feels really boring to play’, or ‘this annoys me when this happens’, or ’I’m not excited about these choices because this is one here is total BS’.
This is always true no matter how little direction you receive, or how little you understand the technicalities they may be operating under.
The result of said discussion have seen just about the same result as if the ‘assumptions’ are accurate.
I think at this point, as I a posted before, they should just tell us what they are planning to (maybe even the why) and let the players make informed choices.
If it makes you feel any better, I guaran-darn-tee you no suggestion is going to get taken out of that thread word for word.
They’re not balancing for the game as we know it today, they’re balancing towards a moving target we won’t see for another 4 to 6 months and beyond. There’s no way anyone could guess what their technical constraints or scope needs are. Especially considering the class’s seeming upper level direction problems.
So formulating an accurate actionable solution on your end is certainly nice, but by no means an expectation that should stifle your contribution. Nobody expects you to come up with the perfect answer to nail a target that’s both moving and invisible to you.
Try not to take writing down your suggestion so seriously you feel paralyzed that you might not be doing it right. Try to think of it more like; generating ideas that other people can shape, showing new angles of approach, or helping to define the problems more clearly.

Yeah. The CDI sparked some hope for me when it was announced. But whatever, I hope they can at least change the description on the profession selection menu so new players won’t be steered to some misconception of the class.
Who says a picture doesnt have a thousand words Great pic bte
On a different note: The class really isn’t as catastrophically disastrous as some of these people will have you believe. Most Rangers seem unwilling to experiment and discover the versatility that the class offers. However, 18 months later and (at least what seems like) just two meaningful patches – Aquaman, and Incredible Hulk pet – it’s getting really frustrating.
I have 10 different sets of exotic armor that I use in PvE and WvW (Zerker, Assassin, Cleric, Magi, Settler, Soldier, Valkyrie, Rabid, Rampager, Shaman, and still working on a full set of Celestial and Apothecary)
Some of them are quite fun too. I will use Magi gear to basically buff my pet to beyond powerful, and I can take down almost anything, just by using the Lynx (I have tested to see if only my pet can take down Champions running around the open world, and it does actually work). I will use Settler’s gear with Melandru runes and lemongrass, and it is nearly impossible for me to die, even in a 1-2-3 v 1 scenario in WvW. I use Valkyrie gear for that 1 chance, 20K maul, and normally send even Warriors running away from me after doing it if I don’t 1-shot them.
Also, the Vast Majority of players in the game seem unwilling to experiment with new stats, and like to just stick with whatever they made first. Not just Rangers.
As Dur said, I’ll experiment with traits all day long but PVE gear is too expensive to be doing that with. I’d rather get a build (read: gear and traits) that is perfect for dungeons and it can be just ok in PVE then calling it a day…. nor am I doing another effin’ legendary. No. Just no. Not doing ascended either because I loathe time gating… I don’t consider dailies time gating because I always get those done with normal play.

I agree 100% with everything you said except about the sword. I like it the way it is
I would still like to see anet buff pets to the point that was near the damage output in GW1 with 16 beatmastery when you put 30 points in the current rendition of the beastmastery trait line… Also if we could get a list of ideas they had taken from the thread so we knew were to focus the rest of the week it would be grand.
The people screaming to remove pets still need a slap in the back of the head cause they are kittening off people who are trying to post ideas on how to fix the pet mechanics or possible ways to fix pet mechanics.
It’s not so much that people want the option to get rid of the pet to be more viable as it is people just wanting to not have a pet period and play an archer. Warrior/Thief is simply not a substitute. The fact is there exists no accommodation for a given style of play, and a lot of people just get upset about it. I’ve mained ranged DPS in every game I’ve played since Runescape Classic and attempted to in GW2. Simply, the game just has no option for something that feels like it available. Bow warrior and shortbow condi thief are good builds, but they’re far from the archer role.
Frankly, the blatant dismissal of the option to remove pets is really dejecting, as I find people get really defensive about the option to stow them for damage augmentation. When you consider just how much utility the pet provides, and how doing so allows for further expansion for exclusively-beastmaster builds, the fix seems very appropriate and comes at quite the cost. People simply asking for the same potency without the pet/gaining all utility without it are of course just in the wrong, though.
There are just a lot of people, myself included, who fail to have any connection with the classes in the game, notably just because of the dependency on pets which forces ranger from being a proper ranged/archer DPS class, and the lack of options to pursue that is just frustrating and really detrimental to the whole experience.

That is what they wanted though. They specifically said they wanted short, directed ideas based around a single play aspect. They didn’t want long essays about what the ranger was missing and what we thought could be done to fix it.
I feel like we would have had a lot less spam from people expecting 20-30 overhauls of utilities if we didn’t have a strict post format.

I am not understanding how the warrior (or thief for that matter) while wielding a bow not an archer to you. Is it the traits they have (or lack) concerning the bow? Just kind of confused about the thoughts on this.
If it is the lower damage potential of ranged combat then that isn’t so solely a problem with ranger, but with the entire PvE side of the game.
I think this weeks live event is a good demonstration of why rangers need a way to stow pets and reclaim damage lost for having the pet out. Against the big fights and prime hologram there is so much huge area ground effect damage happening that it is just about impossible to keep your pet alive during it. I have tried ranged pets I have tried tanky pets but they are just so lacking in responsiveness that they just go poof constantly and there is no amount of skill that would keep them alive while also allowing them to be useful in any way to warrant the micromanaging.
I saw a beauty of a post in the CDI a day ago. The guy started the post with …“I have never played a Ranger, but here are my suggestions how to improve them”

If you fight against rangers you know what they need………
Actually rangers need a skill which people were afraid of, each time people see a ranger they stomp him because they know that rangers doesnt have a real burst skill(eviscerate, mindwrack, elecombo, stealth+BS,etc).

Aside from them wielding a bow, there’s almost nothing there which pertains to the archer role, sadly.
Longbow Warrior is honestly just an elementalist. The only attacks which actually shoot arrows and not fireballs are 1 and 2, which are awful, not to mention the inherent lack of mobility you have, clunky kit, slow attack animations, heavy armor/poor flavor/immersion, and overall inadequacies of maining a bow present.
Thief upholds almost all of the flavor, however the shortbow also lacks an archer element. Skills 2, 3, 4, and 5 do not utilize arrows, and 1 is an AOE with mediocre damage coefficients. You improvise a bomb on an arrow to travel slowly and deal and explosion, teleport around, and dodge. While #3 is fine as a dodge, nothing else in the kit (and none of the utilities) actually make the class feel like an archer. That’s also not to mention the reduced range on thief shortbow and forced AOE attacks which can really ruin the purpose of using ranged combat strategies at all.

You forgot to mention the fact that they don’t get the buff that allows to make damage, so, you can just keep it on passive beside you and use it to send out buffs… it’s the pet’s only use there (yeah, really losing 30% of my damage there…)
Though, since they do not get the buffs (they make us deal damage, but take more damage also), I found that even fragile pets (passive) stay alive pretty easy, even when on 60 sec CD, in the first parts of the encounter, where the buff is needed…
Ranger’s not supposed to be a bursty class, according to Anet’s view of it, but this encounter is about dealing damages fast, especially by the end, when you have to kill the holograms that boost the middle one, then burst the middle hologram in the tiny window of time when it does not have the buff... pretty much the only time where pet might be usefull, but at that time, there are so many AoE’s that it’s dead before it reaches the target… when it didn't get killed by the lasers...

If you are a good player .yes, you know what rangers need, and TBH you only must look at numbers in WvW for example, 1/50 is ranger, 40/50 guardian/warriors/thieves, 9/50 eles, engis, nec, mesmer.
Yup. Hating that fight with all of my hate right now.
Objectively I’m totally aware of what an advancement it is for the game’s fight design, but Subjectively I’m so frustrated with my profession mechanic I can’t enjoy it.
Well, at least it’s not as bad as Frizz’s laser pet blender.
Seriously, though, I don’t hate the mechanic nearly as much as I hate the fact it has a Healthbar.

The whole hologram fight is an exercise in frustration trying to keep your pet alive. Anet buffed pet health by 71%, thinking this would help a lot. I ran a moa and bear for this event (two of the more tanky pets) and both got instagibbed by lasers and aoe before I could even shift my fingers over to my swap binding.
Perhaps it’s an attempt to make the open-world PvE so difficult that a pet buff in dungeon is justifiable.
Just because it interests me…
Who is satisfied how “our” representative Allie represented A-Net in the Ranger CDI so far?
I think it is by far the worst CD topic I have witnessed.

I blame anet more than I blame Allie.
Ya she could be more interactive in the CDI but she has also stated she was sick for a while and also had other higher priority tasks from anet
Anet should have more than one representative for something everyone in this forum knew. (That ranger was going to biggest, most active CDI )
Anet could care less honestly about this profession, its pretty obvious from the past 1.5 year of constant nerfs, little to no buffs, and absolutely nothing being done about the most broken class mechanic in this game

the skrittfinisher was my idea!
Super bummed we had zero discourse whatsoever. I really like the CDI concept, but when stuff like that happens it feels like an appeasement maneuver to buy time as opposed to genuine player/developer collaboration. I hope I am wrong, but the AI on pets has never at any point “worked”. To get told that mechanic in particular is not up for discussion and there was a “Ready Up” a few months ago in which they said they didn’t want to alienate newer players by giving more pet control to the players, I just feel like one or the other has to change.
I feel it’s past time for someone to step up and make a decision on the direction of Ranger and start development on it post haste. That many posts about a single class at the very least means that player interest in the class is a thing of paramount importance to the playerbase.
I expected as much. Was just waiting for the lock to get thrown on it.
I’m not waiting for them. I have no hope left. My expectations are of a Aquaman v2 patch at best, status quo at worst.
It’s all going to come down to if they’re wiling to shift their vision for the class to fit the game they’ve made or if they’re going to keep their vision of the class and attempt to bring the game to it.
Hearing their vision of the class pretty much answered every question I ever had and explains perfectly why nothing has changed in 1.5 years.
Hahaha Wondrouswall – You nailed it! It evades me how inaccurate Anet’s description of the Ranger is i.e. Thief with SB, and Warrior w/LB far exceed our pitiful output along with pets who are unmanageable in many situations. I love ranger, I have 3 80’s different races and have spent 2500 hrs. on my main, but am at a loss in the zerg events like LA’s destruction. We did fine w/Marrionette. If only we could place our pets, since they cannot dodge, and at least keep them alive longer in huge zerg type events. Even that one ability would help, since we cannot stow them. Well we can keep them inactive at least until we’re hit, do pitiful damage, and then all bets are off. I would imagine from a programming side, that it would be doable to be able to place them exactly where we want, not so sure about the dodging . It truly makes me sad all the nerfs we’ve received starting 6/25/13. I’ll still play, but our compaints and issues are falling on deaf ears.
I am always surprised by the unrealistic expectations in these type of games. Then the disappointment that follows.
I saw a beauty of a post in the CDI a day ago. The guy started the post with …“I have never played a Ranger, but here are my suggestions how to improve them”
Pretty much sums up the problem.
If you fight against rangers you know what they need ……..
Actually rangers need a skill which people were afraid of, each time people see a ranger they stomp him because they know that rangers doesnt have a real burst skill(eviscerate, mindwrack, elecombo, stealth+BS,etc).
lol yea, that makes them a real expert.
#wow
I’d trust a person who steamrolls zerk rangers in WvW every night over the people who keep trying to act like we have a burst power build because a roided Maul can one shot a distracted person (only folks with less than ~16k health) every ~45 seconds.
They might not know the class inside and out but we also have some of the most delusional, selfish players of any class in the game in our ranks. How often do you see other classes kitten that they can’t just auto range without getting kicked from dungeon parties?

It’s not their fault the weapon’s about as deep as a kiddy pool in PvE.
I think it’s just a bad combination of iconic theme weapon + class-based overemphasis on autoattack + Action RPG PvE that’s shockingly lite on the actual action.
But yeah, we agree that Maul business is just silly.

lol sure. Very credible statement.

Choosing to not slot for obvious party support because it clashes with one’s desire to be the lone sniper? I must be imagining all the whiny threads about people getting booted from dungeon parties for going bearbow then…
Or maybe I’m confusing them with warrior threads wanting to go rifle pewpew instead of using melee…

Well, I just feel like so many constructive criticisms were left completely unread. I can understand Anet being overwhelmed, but what do they expect? Their evident lack of industry level professional grade QA as evidenced by the numerous bugs presented in the release candidates of the living stories, complete and total callousness to the integrity of professions in certain gamemodes all due to the balance issues of sPvP…
I’m not really sure what to think. I want to be optimistic, but I really don’t think Allie knows what she’s doing. It seems like she cares about what’s wrong with Rangers, but at time it feels like she will only comply with certain ideas if they tickle her fancy like the Pet Aspects. Is thinking objectively something of a novelty in 2014 game development?

Allie is representing Anet, and she stated in her post that there were only some of the ideas that were discussed internally…
My biggest worry is we get the Warrior Treatment, as in to much to fast..
I read the suggestions Allie posted that she wants to pass on to the team, and i’m worried we’ll get a lot of that stuff.
Because frankly, I’d be a monster if I got even half of it..
Crap like wanting Shortbow to have Confusion/Torment/Burning just blows my mind..
That weapon would be so bloody overpowered.
Things like Lowering Trolls Urgent Cooldown + giving it condition removal…TU is pretty powerful as a heal right now..It doesn’t need anything, Heal as One could use something like that.. but not TU
Some of the trait suggestions are fine.. I just don’t want this class to end up like the Warrior.

Which is likely to happen…..and it isn’t surprising because pretty much every game like this evolves that way. The classes play a game of ‘tag your it’ taking turns being the strong class. A class can go from zero to hero with 1 or 2 minor tweaks.
The one thing I will say about Warrior though…and most classes, are their trait lines make sense. Ranger is always going to have a hindrance because their trait lines are all over the map. I never realized how bad it was until I started playing other classes where it seems there are so many more tough choices to make when picking traits. I always feel I am leaving something good out. Too many times with Rangers I end up picking a trait i don’t really want or need …but there isn’t anything else to pick.

Oh trust me, I know games play the tag you’re it game when it comes to balance
I’ve said it before, but I was a Valkyrie Player in DAOC before they got buffed…and it was an awful class at the time.. but i did play it till RR8 before they got any buffs… and it kind of played out like the Warrior buffs in this game.
They ended up getting Charge..Which was pretty powerful, and was a good ability..Then they got what was basically Levi from Reavers…That was pretty over the top..
They they were like screw it, and they gave them a bloody massively overpowered Heal line..
But yea….. A lot of games are like that….I’m just hoping Rangers don’t end up that way..Then again i’ll probably be playing ESO by then so it won’t matter..

I would rather that than nothing at all, i.e. what we have gotten the last 1.5 years.

No kidding about the Valkrie. A buddy played one off and on. Then after the buff he was pretty much unkillable. We duoed with him on his Valk and me on my Skald. We would cross bridge choke points and hoped to get attacked by the stealth brigade hanging out there. It usually didn’t end well for them.
Random note had a Freudian slip just now was going to wiki some to the pets that I don’t use often to work see what I could use them for and so hastily I typed “/wiki pests”
