Is Ranger a DPS class or not?
Clearly not. Some warrior asked me how much damage I crit and I proudly told him 2k and sometimes 3k thinking I was doing pretty well. He then told me that my damage was horrible and compared his warrior abilities to mine.
Basically warrior abilities do 3-5x as much damage as their ranger counterparts.

^— If you compare ranger to the other classes in this game, it’s not. But, I think it’s intended to be a DPS/control/evasion class like Thief, Ele, etc. They just forgot to add the DPS and evasion to it
All classes are supposed to be able to play every role. That was the GOSPEL that was preached from the mountain tops.
The idea was. But in reality, it falls short on dps of any other class by 10 percent minimum. Considering the high chance of dying pet – you can take away from him about 20 percent more. It is sad that a support ranger (to put it mildly) not the best too. As, however, the tank. Therefore the significance of the ranger is generally quite uclear.
You can play just for the love to ranger class. Some find it fun. The strongest sides he has not.
well… to me, after playing ranger, any class seems varied and interesting and strong.
21k hit from a single blow with minimal conditions vs. my highest 12k hit – the last tick of a Rapid Fire with 25 stacks of Vulnerability.
Yeah, Ranger DPS is in the pits and our pets are a sorry excuse to make up for it. Even combined (pending the target isn’t moving) our damage cannot equal that of other professions. We have to jump through hoops while they barely have to twitch their little finger.

Which kinda holds true tbh, i’ve seen rangers absolutely wreck people, just as i’ve seen warriors support the group, i personally am a sort of support/tank player on my ranger leaping around with my greatsword and spinning to win in my healing spring with my spirit back up dancers and my lovely Reef drake Bubbles!! Not to mention how much support Warhorn can cause (marking people with 4 or you know, that sexy buff with 5)

Actually that means all arrows together dealt 12k damage, not the last hit; many channeling abilities show you the added up damage from all skills, not each hit.

Rangers with certain builds can wreck people, if those said people stood still, didnt side step arrows, or kill pet. Problem is arrows move to slow, pets die too easily, signets are near usless, and ranger weapons are weak without their pet. If my pet dies I literally turn into the weakest player on the field, even if the other player is new to the game.

Yea, on average I get 6-7k rapid fires, I have gotten the occasional 12k also but the target pretty much has to be afk for me to hit them.
Ranger is obviously a DPS class and a good one, what does DPS mean? If what you want is flashy big numbers then no, it’s not a “DPS” class…but then…that’s not DPS.
Oh… Here Sleepy from his world of fantasy. Eh… DPS mean Damage Per Second. No, seriously, maybe you already go and get another class to compare? Or even bothered to calculate the approximate DPS of your class. Or take any other weapon other than a short bow and see. Or u will continue to make statements based only on your personal sense of how fast you kill single mobs? Hundreds of people believe that the ranger’s DPS is garbage. And only you believe and try to proved without evidence that it is not. Is it tempting you to any conclusions?
@MeGaZlo, you are directly going to the ignore “troll” list, the true fantasy is you having all classes at 80 fully geared as you said
My statement is based on facts, if you can’t handle your pet don’t play ranger.
Bleed/burn condition build can be very strong with traps.
I’m going with no….I thought it was a DPS profession when I bought the game. And I was wrong.
@Sleepy 2 things:
1. not sure if serious, but there are players with 5+ professions at 80 with exotic gear.
2. also not sure if serious, but when you say that big flashy numbers aren’t “DPS” then what is? many classes can drop this “burst” damage more often that a ranger can deliver similar damage, even with pet. our single target damage usually doesn’t even amount to what other professions can dish out in an area.
but really, i’m enjoying other profs while ANet irons out their vision of the ranger.

1- I know there are players with plenty of level 80 chars fully geared, however if you read a few posts from that person you would realize that’s not one of them
2- DPS is damage per second, not big numbers…if you can’t compete with other classes DPS then you are doing something wrong.
It’s true that our only weakness is our AoE damage compared to certain classes but AoE usually is not that needed and when needed have barrage which does 10k+ (just to say a MINIMUM amount of damage) and piercing arrows which are great if you care enough about hitting at least 2 targets pretty much the whole time.
For PvE dungeons longbow/shortbow are a must have set up, if people doesn’t maximize their DPS it’s because they simply don’t want to. People says ranger doesn’t have “damage” mainly because you don’t see a 30k crit, however it’s as easy as using Barrage + Rapid fire every time you have QZ up to dish out between 15-30k+ in about 5 seconds and i’m not even gonna bother saying how much damage a well used pet can provide.

Bleed/burn condition build can be very strong with traps.
You will need 30 pts in Skirmishing (precision/crit dmg total useless for build cond), with 900 range traps.
Try it in WvW. Before you think spam traps, you are dead.
In DG, it’s ok, but no. Bleed have 25cap, and other player with cond build (like necro), will stack very fast. So, your damage is summarized by burn/poison, power, and pet dmg (but no, pet will be dead 70% of the time).
So, no. Ranger is not DPS. And bad support (Ele, Guardian, Mesmer, Eng are best by far).

Speaking “10k+ with barrage MINIMUM” – you quite brazenly lying. No matter. Look at the warrior’s rifle. A similar ability to cause the same damage but twice as fast (2.1/2 cast time). Warrior also have piercing shots. And making greater crits with greater speed (and greater chance), independent of the distance. Oh.. and causes bleeding from all sides.

Guild missions say otherwise.
I think the more relevant question to ask, particularly to Anet, just requires you to drop DPS from the thread title. To date it feels like the answer is no.

This.
I’ve had to revamp my ranger with Cond Dmg/Precision/Toughness gear with Cond Dmg/Precision/Vitality accessories to make it viable because you will be fairly close-range when attacking, so survivability is paramount. I’ve stacked runes of the undead for extra condition damage and toughness on all armor pieces.
I use an Axe/Torch for the fire combo primarily and spam spike trap and flame trap. Skills spec’d 0/30/30/0/10, all in trap traits.
I use sword/warhorn as the alt for the warhorn buffs, what’s good is that I use superior sigils of hydromancy on one of the two weapons, including the alt weapon. When I swap to either of them, it freezes nearby enemies for 3 seconds. I’m finding the sword a little hard to get used to because of the rooting bug you get with Skill #1, so I might need to swap it for another axe. If the shortbow caused bleeding from all directions, I’d use this instead. Unfortunately it doesn’t.
Oh, and a lot of pro-active dodging is required. I’m still practising this build but I’m confident I can be of some use to a team once I master it.

The Freeze from Hydromancy is nice, but if you’re not completely opposed to getting rid of it, I recommend something else.
Do Axe/Torch and Sword/Dagger. Put Sigil of Geomancy on both Weapons….
Open with Torch Throw, Or Winters Grasp (unless Guardian, use Number 1 Attack) I prefer Torch Throw as it gets my pet on its way to the target and then I do Winter’s Grasp. Follow up with bonfire ontop of the target, then Do Number 2 Axe ability, This is a 5 Stack of Bleeds point blank, Switch to Sword/Dagger, this applies 3 Stacks of Bleeds from Geomancy, bringing it to 8 stacks of bleeds, Followed by Dagger 5, which is 3 STacks, So 11 Stacks of Bleed can be applied to the Target Extremely fast.. and on a very low low cooldown. If you’re using Traps you can apply even more very quickly along with of course Burning or Freezing (your choice)

In WvW? Total useless in large groups. Can be ok alone, roaming, but for roaming I prefer Thief ^^
On my 80 exotic Ranger i get 7000ish (if i’m lucky) with Longbow Ripid last hit..
on my 42 Rared Warrior i get 8000ish average with a standard hit with an axe
It’s not our crits that make us dps, its our weapon and utility skills. I roll a standard ranger dps build, and while I am not consistently dealing as much damage as say a Warrior, the longbow gives Rangers the ability to deal quick bursts of massive damage. When paired with Quickening Zephyr, the Ranger becomes a DPS machine, especially if you have the shortened longbow-skill cool down trait.
Oh and Dante, I can get 10k or more at times, just depends on how many successful hits you get (aka no obstructions or evasions).

Basically warrior abilities do 3-5x as much damage as their ranger counterparts.
a warrior posted a video of them doing 15-20k crits consistently on their warrior with a rifle (killshot). but still… The best we do is with a full rapid fire that crits… and that’s MAYBE 10k (over entire channel).

Kill shot is a burst skill, it has a huge kitten cast time, huge kitten ramp up time, roots them in place while they are charging it, and the CD isn’t that great either (for the weakest version, not the full power 20k version) so god i would HOPE they can deal more damage with that skill then we can with our freaking 2 on a longbow.
After checking the wiki there is a 10s CD on the kill shot skill itself, which isn’t that bad, but you need to attack 10 times for the WEAKEST version of the skill to be used (by attack it means 10 skills, not 10 hits) and if you want a full powered shot that’s 30 skills that need to go off for that 20k, so yeah, have fun building that up so you can get a shot off on someone that’s either immobilized, not at the computer, or CCed by someone other then you because otherwise you should be able to dodge or reflect that skill easily.

Ranger is obviously a DPS class and a good one, what does DPS mean? If what you want is flashy big numbers then no, it’s not a “DPS” class…but then…that’s not DPS.
Most people don’t know the definition of DPS, and expect to see big flashy numbers.
Don’t bring logic into our forum. We like to be ignorant, okay? Thanks, but take your logic elsewhere.
I’d much rather have ANet hand me unnecessary buffs instead of nerfing the broken skills on classes like Warriors, and Mesmers.

Why doesn’t my #1 skill hit as hard as the warrior burst skill?!? This is nonsense!! WE NEEDZ BUFFZ URHURHUR!!
you know, because pumping someone full of 3-4k crits coming from both you AND your pet isn’t going to wreck some dude or anything… nope, we gotta deal really big damage with each skill or we’re just bad…

It’s one, but powerful shot (pierce, trait). 10s CD isn’t long. Easy dodge? Maybe. If you imobilize the target before attack (gain fury, trait), it’s easy shot. In large groups it’s more hard dodge yet. In small groups, you just need wait the exactly moment to use.
For last, do you need attack 10x with WEAKEST version? You are * kidding, right? Do you have #1 bleed, #2 cripple (with imobilize, trait), #3 other powerful skill, #4 invu5x, #5 knockback (melee range).
Ok, give me one Kill Shot in one Bow, with the same cd, range, cast and DAMAGE, and i’ll never more talk about how rangers are bad.
I can’t understand why Engineer have a mid range with rifle (2 skills with 1.200 range, with trait), and Warrior have 1.200 natural. It’s like: engineer use shootgun and warrior rifle.

80Rng – 80Wa – 80Thief – 80Grd – 80Ele – 80Engi – 80Necro
It’s kind of two pronged issue.
The obvious one that should go without saying at this point, and then the kinda’ irritating one. As if by some grand conspiracy, a good number of our general bugs and hiccups somehow managed to converge on the direct damage dimension of our possible build structure with the malicious intent to generally screw with us.
Our power line has minor traits so counter-intuitively structured to one of the weapons likely to be used with it (Longbow) people mistake them for bugged (900 range). One of our other meatier weapons that’s more in the general vicinity of reliable manages to be unpopular due to the general feel of using it (Sword). One of our three vicious pet families is outright ignoring half it’s skills (Drake). On the two methods it’s used to apply the buff to the Ranger himself, our class specific damage multiplier is missing in action (Signet of the Hunt and Moment of Clarity). And, of our Utility direct damage multipliers 3/4ths of them just so happen to land squarely in the ‘up for immediate revision’ category (Frost Spirit, Sic ’Em, Signet of the Hunt).
Holy bugfixes, batman!
That is one unkittenfortunate collection of problems. Objectively, none of that is particularly earth-shattering, as you can build a good ways around the problem areas and just suck up the feel issues. Subjectively, it’s got more than enough rusted-over moving parts to make building into this area feel somewhat restrictive and unrewarding. Class concept misunderstandings aside, it’s no wonder people just aren’t feeling teh deepz love.
/edit: ack. Never you mind that momentary brain fart.

I thought rapid fire worked like this for some time until I understood, the numbers on rapid fire are a bit misleading. the last shot in rapid fire is the total dmg from all shots. Each shot in rapid fire only adds to the total that is displayed for each hit, making it seem that you are doing more damage for subsequent hits, when you are not.
Yeah the ranger is totally a DPS class! – IF by DPS you mean:

I’m sure you’re all smart folks, and I don’t need to mention the following, but I’ll leave it here anyway.
It is easier to dodge a single hit (especially one that you see coming because of a long charge up), than it is to dodge a multi hit (because even if you dodge the first few, you’ll still take the rest).

Yeah, I’m pretty sure all channeled type abilities work this way. Mesmer/ele beams, etc.
I think alot of people still don’t understand this and think their rangers are hitting a heck of alot harder than they really are.

Yeah, unless you are facing a ranger in PvP, then you just run in a straight line and all of them miss

You must be a special ranger then…or perhaps the game just hates you, and is telling you to re-roll.
I personally find no issues shooting people. The only issue that occurs here and there (in specific terrain) is invisible obstructions…but guess what? That happens on all characters/classes, NOT just rangers.

Huge cast time? Not really. Huge build up? Nope. Roots them in place? Yea sure, but that’s not a massive deal with this ability. Cooldown isn’t that bad, at all. 10 skills to charge it? Lol no. I can nearly charge it from using 4. I take it you’ve never played a Rifle warrior. Our 3 is a NASTY rapid fire high damage ability, this itself will do like 1 stage – 1 and a half stages of adrenaline. Also we have a heal that fills the adrenaline guage. So that’s 1 skill. Also a sigil that fills it. That’s one skill.
Where the hell do you get your numbers from? 30 skills before you get a full powered version? What planet are you on? It’s nowhere near that number AT ALL. As i’ve said it’s more like 4. Or even 1 if you use a heal or signet. Please GTFO because you clearly have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

The cast time is long enough for anyone to dodge, unless they suffer from slow reaction, or just aren’t paying attention.
It doesn’t matter how many skills you spam to get full adrenaline, as you’ll still have to wait for that cooldown.
Yes, the skill is broken because of the damage it deals in WvW, and does in fact need to be toned down, along with 100B to keep intact with the PW, HS, and BS nerfs thieves got because of their damage.
The damage certain skills deal is indeed ludicrous, I agree, but the core mechanics are fine as is.

The CD isn’t that long. Like 10 seconds? 12? That’s not exactly long. The 20k damage you see in those videos, i’ve not got close to that yet, highest I’ve hit is 12k (my gear is pretty much full exotics with 40% increase crit damage)
If they nerf the HB damage, then they need to do something about the mobility. The skill is so easily dodged its ridiculous. You have to specifically use bull charge, frenzy and HB which in fact leads you open to a LOT, making you feel like a one trick pony. If they nerf the damage on HB, they need to make it more mobile.
Ranger is reasonable sustained damage if built and played well, but it is relatively weak as a burst class. That’s a big reason why it is weak in pvp but ok in pve.
So if a friend asked, I want to do huge crits, be able to nearly oneshot people, be really mobile, have great survivability, and a forgiving playstyle you should steer them away from Ranger.
