Ranger update march 26
PVP is different to WvsW.
WvW is a subgroup of PvP, but if you were confused, then let me clarify: I was talking specifically about sPvP (structured player vs player) and tPvP (tournament player vs player).
WvsW is different to PvP specially the accessories and the weapon stat. And don’t say That the trap ranger don’t rely on quickness when swapping pet, the spider need a quick attack so that there skill don’t just lunch on the ground, the wolf and dog they need a quick leap and then at that time you can use your entangle. If you use short bow you need that quickness to put a lot of bleed to enemy. Don’t just make a test on PVP try on WvsW and you gonna see the difference… Use a ranger when you go WvsW
Let me spell this out: PvP means Player vs Player. This is what WvW is made up of. Yes, it is very different from sPvP, but it is PvP.
And no one said that trap rangers don’t use quickness. My statement about trap rangers was a relative comparison, because pet quickness on a condition build is significantly less relevant than QZ along with pet swap on a power based build.
the problem I see is that we dont know what they are doing to the ranger behind the screens…
maybe they work on the crappy pet AI and as soon as that is fixed we would be “terribly OP” if they buff other things…
I still dont get how weak we are with the bows though…
Shouldnt we be funkier and flashier with the bow then other classes…
Ranger LB sucks animation wise compared with the Warrior (he shoots two arrows at once – shoots burning arrows, exploding arrows… I mean .. C´Mon!!!
Thief is way cooler with his shortbow then we are…
I dont talk about damage (well that suffers too compared to those two other classes)
I talk about the animations and the “coolness” factor
Whoever did the Ranger skill selection for the bows
and whoever did the boring animations – I am not impressed by your performance…
just change trap range to 1200 so i can sit behind a zerg and be useful in wvwvw.
That would increase our condition build damage that’s for sure..Only problem is it’d suck for SPvP and TPvP (It’d be incredibly overpowered)

Hehe, its good to see some of you mentioned my redesign points here
“We’ll wait. But not forever!”

Maybe pets should have a double range setting. One range at which they initiate their attack and another range for how far it reaches. So for example, melee pets could get an attack-range of 100 and a reach-range of 500. This should allow them to hit moving targets more easily without having to change the animations, nor their attack speed.
Stop spamming your infinite suggestions please!!!
Let Robert answer at least some of the questions above!!!
I’m still here and lurking about (as is the balance team), gathering information to bring to meetings. For the first couple days after a patch, people are still figuring things out and getting used to changes.
Mr. Hrouda, that’s a whole lot of typing to essentially tell the community “yeah, we changed things, get used to it and L2P”.
How’s Jon Peters doing?
Robert what do you think about adding burst of like 8X Y dmg to ranger GS,where Y would be something in between guardian, warrior burst higher then guards burst lower then warriors burst.Personaly I think all melee weapons should have burst skill to compensate for the risk of melee range and that ranger GS deserves to have 1 to.So yea what do you think about it OP or OK?
Edit: sorru, wrong forum….
Currently @ some T1 server in EU
at this point it is just sad that the pet revive skill STILL does not work all the time, just dueled a thief (both were downed, called my pet away from her to heal me) and lost since my pet stood over me
Xsorus pretty much hit pets bang on the nail, F2 just doesn’t work. I keep wanting to run wolves and they just plain blow, hit F2, nothing happens, wait… wait… no nothing, hit it again AH there we go he howls, that’ll chill that thief… oh wait no it didn’t, by the time the animation played out he was gone and it was a waste.
I keep swapping to wolves and then jumping back to birds, at least I know where I am with birds.
Don’t get me started on waiting for the stack of 5 might from a cat that just seems incapable of getting it right.
Happy to see someone from anet is still keeping an eye on the forums but I noticed they said we will just have to get used to the new quickness, I really hope that doesn’t mean they think the QZ skill is ok. It was rebalanced as if the ranger class is the same as the others but its not. Significantly lowering the overall damage you can do from the skill and increasing the risk. That makes QZ useless for its original purpose (burst damage) and as if in trade off the skill has been given a stun break essentially repurposing the skill. The problem with that is this – when do you need a stun break? typically when you are getting battered and need to heal asap. With the extra second added you can’t heal for that much longer. There is no longer any beneficial use of the QZ skill and I don’t see how anyone could honestly argue otherwise.
Thing that annoys me about birds is that god awful Swiftness buff they do which its hilariously long animation time….Half the time i don’t even get the swiftness cause i’m already out of their range when chasing the target.
I don’t understand why Anet has decided our pets need long gaudy cast-times and animations…

Yeah it’s the main reason I can’t pick over birds and cats, I love birds, they look amazing but why they have to flap all over the place before they attack I will never know.
I keep the pet back and then as I move closer in I’ll tie someone up in a melee ball and then hit F2 for burst but the kitten bird just flaps around and around and around before it attacks.
I actually get the pets not hitting often, we can’t just point and shoot out pets, I get that, but the kitten animation times are just killing me here ANet.

I have a love/hate relationship with my raven because of this. When it crits, it crits hard, but getting it to engage in the first place is the problem. I can at least count on the jaguar to try to attack once it’s within range, but the raven often times just does the swiftness twirl and then… nothing. It just flutters in place for what feels like a long time in the thick of combat before it finally decides to attack, aaaaaand of course it doesn’t crit on that attack.
Still, when it crits, aww yeah.
I miss when the birds evaded during their super long animations but had about half the vitality… Or at least I -think- they evaded, I remember birds were amazing at tanking 3 things at once without taking any damage…
They do need to speed up that swiftness animation though, I mean… C’mon, it’s not even -that- good of a buff!! Maybe if it also gave vigor that huge animation would make sense, but just swiftness?

Yeap..I’m, the same way..Loved my birds when they actually did something..
A lot of times though..Its the bloody swiftness buff…
Its like Anet wanted to include something in the pet just to slow it down on purpose..I mean what the hell..The animation is like a kitten loop in the sky…

I have 3 ranger at the moment a condition\trapp spec with sb/sword warhorn
Beast master bunker gs /sword dagger
and a mele hybrid build that i find very entertaining and semi viable. Most rangers i talk with that is unnhappy with rangers use them as pure range class.
but the short bow and long bow dont synergise any well.
I belive a buff Long bow must be done rely carfull as it have ok burst, if traited a good knock back and good area dmg,
It needs a buff of some sort to be viable in spvp/tpvp but i cant se any thing that will help without being op.Inn my oppinion a realy strong Spvp/Tpvp class, and ok in WvW
cant rely comment on PvE as i only did what i needed to get to 80 and got most of my gear from trading gems 4 gold.
I almost only play tornaments these days. The longbow has a terrible fire rate with the exception of #2, and max damage is achieved at a distance that projectiles can be sidestepped with ease without quickness to make up for poor fire rate. The #4 skill should be an instant cast shot b/c in WvW it is interrupted almost every time. The longbow almost has no protection b/c it is a slow and laborious at getting shots off and is too prone to interruption.
The short bow is still viable in WvW simply b/c of the quick fire rate and immediate fire of the #5 skill. I still don’t really understand poison as the #2 condition but that skill is useless anyway unless you are at point blank range. The #2 skill should become an AoE bullseye target attack which would help with two things. First of all it would help the condition become more of an asset and secondly would give a defense against invisibility since there is no way to hit a target that has gone into stealth with the SB. In addition unless you have started the #2 skill (which will continue to track people in stealth) on the LB you can’t hit enemies in stealth either. Barrage is way to slow to kill a thief in stealth so please don’t retort with that.
Overall the bows biggest weaknesses are in their defensive standpoints are severely lacking in almost all aspects. They are completely offensive and the LB due to low fire rate, slow projectile speed, and good damage is at a long distance it has a hard time standing on its on as a main weapon of choice. Since the LB without quickness misses more than it hits a moving target is not an option for me anymore so I have completely moved to GS/SB. As stated earlier I hate being forced into a weapon but I can’t see a better weapon for the ranger atm then the GS.
Nah, Sansar is right in that longbow isn’t terrible (especially with piercing arrows and eagle eye) and that it doesn’t synergize well with shortbow. I know you’re passionate but if you don’t see that you need to explore more successful ranger builds. I get your poi t about defensive however I should add that melee weapons have some built in defense because you’re at melee range. I’m not sure defense with bows makes sense.

Mr. Hrouda, thanks again for posting. Guys, go easy on the complaints. It’s very extreme. Patience and practice if you’re so passionate about ranger. No need to cut each other down, especially Hrouda since he’s coming from a completely different perspective.
its really pain to my ranger. especially if I fight to mesmer before I finish stomp mesmer I already down! try it and you see how pain is that. the pet skill is still not responding even its CD if Ipress pet skill nothing happen need to press a lot of times to respond the pet skill. I am toughness build and mesmer easily kill me same as thief. looks like toughness for ranger is nothing just the condition damage is working.

Mr. Hrouda, like Mr. Peters, has now been found out. Our patience has exhausted itself and it’s not our fault. Well, actually it is…are you familiar with the fable concerning the dog and the scorpion?
Thanks for the buff to greatsword (‘cause I’m going to play melee in medium armor, lol).
Comments like this really do show up who the bad rangers are. It wouldn’t matter so much if you didn’t then act like the problem isn’t with you.
A man is starving and has no shoes. He needs food, he needs shoes. You give him a pair of Adidas, ’cause he needs shoes. Then he dies of starvation. Ask yourself: what did he need most?
It’s freaking ridiculous, from ANY POINT OF VIEW, that a ranged class – probably THE ranged class – receives buff on melee skills when its prior mechanic (Pets) still lack of control/ways to survive. I may be a bad ranger, but if you miss to notice this simple thing you live in a world of fairies and unicorns for sure.
It’s ridiculous to you b/c you choose not to play melee. You don’t speak for everyone as some rangers do appreciate the melee playstyle. No one is saying that our ranged builds don’t need some help and that our pet AI is still atrocious, but do recognize that some of us actually want a buffed GS also.
I think the difference is, EVERYONE has pets. Pet buffs would be helpful to EVERYONE. It’s only rational, and it’s selfish as hell to say everything is fine just because you happened to be helped by it,
Alright. The quickness change changed the effectiveness of my build. It was still good but it wasn’t up to my standards anymore. So, I had to change my build and I love what I have even more, essentially the same survivability with a lot more damage.
Thanks for the changes.
Am I good?… I’m good.
Umm did u guys notice chain-atk-spear-evade must stay still old chain can swim but new patch make us can’t move when chain-evade active.

Nah, Sansar is right in that longbow isn’t terrible[/quote]
I don’t think I said that the LB was terrible, but the fire rate was terrible. In WvW which is where I spend most of my time, the #4 skill is worthless in a small skirmish. It takes way to long for the animation and cast to fire and almost always interrupted or a block is used before it shoots. #5 barrage is good at keeping the perma stealthers at bay but with the longer cooldown you are basically left with the #3 and #2 burst that are consistently useful in a WvW environment. Defensive measures are crucial in WvW and the LB really doesn’t provide much defense at all. In addition the nerf to quickness really hurt the auto attack on LB even more. Basically the longbow is straight burst DPS and switch to another weapon at the current time.
I have a Warrior, Mesmer, Guardian, and Ele as alts and it really doesn’t matter which weapon sets, skills, or traits I use I can be successful with minimal effort. I run a bow/GS build on my ranger and I am pretty successful doing it. However, melee and bows don’t synergize that well with traits. For instance moment of clarity is 30 in the skirmsh tree and eagle eye and piercing arrows takes 30 in the power tree. This doesn’t leave me much in the way of traits to improve my pets or healing. Moment of clarity is nice for the #5 skill on the GS and piercing arrows and eagle eye are a must for bows.
I haven’t met a ranger that I can’t melt in WvW (and I’m far from a PvP elite player) and I can hold my own against just about anyone but a well built guardian. They can heal themselves faster than I can DPS them which i’m okay with since I can run a lot faster and flee if need be. Thieves are really annoying with their perma stealth but binding roots(Elite) and barrage(LB) takes care of them. However, these skills have long cooldowns so you better hope you get the thief on the run and keep on them with the GS or they will just come back again and again while your skills are on CD. If they come back you must use the second option “Protect Me” (another long CD) and sacrifice your pet to absorb the backstab and pop them with maul and then hilt bash. I am far from a glass cannon but do run 30 in power these days only to help sure up my bows. I would call my build a hybrid of PVT with enough precision to keep my crit chance above 50%. With the Pet AI and animation times for them it’s worthless to think they are going to hit anything in WvW during a small skirmish.
Look, the Devs have admitted that the ranger profession is most in need of improvement b/c of lack of build synergy and versatility. In addition they also have admitted that bows lack defense. I doubt making the #4 LB skill instant cast and increasing the auto attack speed slightly would make the LB OP. However, it would make it a viable main weapon and worth traiting 30 into power for piercing arrows and eagle eye. On this post I’m not even going to go down the path (it has been covered in numerous threads) of how badly the traits line up and how skills don’t backup and support weapons well. We can discuss that if you like but I believe the ranger priority should be to tweak bows and get the pet animation crap out of the way until they can fix the AI. Seriously, 30 – 40% of our damage is baked into a pet that cannot consistently land attacks on moving targets and remain dead most of the time b/c they stand in the middle of AoE attacks like they are taking a hot shower. Yes, ranger is currently broken compared to all other classes and I would love for someone to explain the synergy in our traits, skills, or pets and show me where we are superior to another class. There is no way a tweak to one weapon set will make our class near OP. Will we improve and allow more of our weapons to become viable as main ones and attribute to more fun? The answer IMO is yes.
My frustration is that since November, ranger has been admittedly the worst class (Dev claims) yet not one (with exception of a slight pet AI improvement – which was appreciated) improvement to the areas mentioned has been done. Broken trait lines, skills, Pet AI, and over all lack of versatility in builds and the best we get is a buff to GS. I appreciate the buff but don’t patronize me with “we haven’t killed rangers” when it’s laughable to see all the improvements and balancing of all classes except rangers. Four months of being the worst and someone is worried that a tweak to one weapon will make us OP….Seriously?…..If that makes us OP then class balance is worse then I could possibly imagine. I have spent more than 1000 hours on my ranger and god knows how many weapons/sigils and suits of armor I have made/purchased to allow me to create a ranger that is fun for me to play. It shouldn’t be a part time job to find a sweet spot for a class to become fun.
Perfect Dark [PD] – Yaks Bend
“Ranger pet cooldowns are now properly preserved when stabled” this thing right here completely decapitates rangers in spvp/1v1’s in wvw (for me). I knew this would happen and now that it did i could just forget i had a ranger.
If ESO makes a decent ranger, not many will stick around here anymore!
Pretty much this for me, always play a Ranger, will always play a Ranger.
The Ranger in GW1 was half decent, and we could dump the stupid pet.
Question: Why isn’t there an elite skill that removes the pet and buffs the ranger somehow?

Yes, why isn’t there ArenaNet ?

I’d like Guard to be made useful again in WvW
Pet’s, especially flying ones, should be able to swoop down from a wall and attack and vice versa. ESPECIALLY, when Engi’s can drop kit’s on top of walls and Mesmer clones/illusions can go on top of walls and behind gates.
If you are about balance, well… it’s not really. Nor is it even fun!

Agreed, as much as I love the pet I would like it tied to a utility, like comfort animal! Let me Rez my pet at little to no cost (other than the cast time) like in GW1 and I’ll be happy… Take my second pet if you wish ANET, I don’t care, I’d prefer one loyal companion over 30 random pets I cycle through any day!
I’d link the picture of someone’s absolutely AMAZING ranger prof mechanic, but I’m at work and that requires a lot of effort to search it….

I’d like the devs to implement one of the following two:
1. Make pet rally when Ranger kills the mob.
2. Lower swap cooldown for downed pets to 30-40 secs untraited.
I’m still here and lurking about (as is the balance team) …
You must mean the ‘un-balance’ team, because all that has happened resulted in less balance after every update.
Sorry Robert, after 7 months your words ring too hollow. All I know is that Ranger plays worse now than it did at launch. I don’t do PvP, so your wins/ranking mean nothing to me.
What does matter to me is PvE and dungeons. I read that dungeons are your thing, well, I do not dare bring my ranger into dungeons anymore. In fact, I cringe when I see a ranger in my dungeon party now because I know the class will bring nothing.
All my ranger does now is crafting, the easier daily/monthly achievement bits, and the dragon events. I don’t even bring the ranger to harvest Orr anymore, my guardian does that.
For me your so-called balance team has been systematically destroying what fun there was to this class since launch. Is this the direction Anet wants for the ranger??
If so, job well done!
Question: Why isn’t there an elite skill that removes the pet and buffs the ranger somehow?
Many cultural elites do this… sort of… actually they remove your pet and turns you into it making you unable to hit moving targets… lol
Lets be honest i have played this class for no more than a month but i can see the pet is the majority of the problem, it’s dumber than a corpse, give us an option to get rid of it and be a true ranger, utility? sure, boons, condition removals, ’’sacrifice’’ to absorb the damage we would take etc.
There are so many ways to keep pets with a lot of utility but removing the dependability, once i’m home from work i can theory craft or w/e but until then im stuck with this small addition to the topic.
