Ranger update
With my experience with MMO’s, it’s not much of a game if it was released “perfect” i love the bugs that come with games. For some developers it may be annoying but in the long run they learn from what caused the issue.
It’s alright to complain about what goes on but you can’t judge it by that. Gotta love the fact that we pay once to play forever. Imagine playing a game where you had to pay monthly and was completely bugged (WoW).

none substantial upgrade have made and now 2 pet skill don’t work properly, lick wound and search and rescue and if u play that class u know how suck can’t be ressed by the pet for a ****ing bug….
Ranger is my main characater and i’m rly disappointed how Anet manage it, i’m playing a guardian/warrior/thief too and i can say that: the ranger ar the most unbalanced class of this game with exception the mindless farming indeed is the most used for botting…..

yeah, sadly WoW have the best customer service of mmorpg’s world…

HAHA i gave up on guildwars with the terrible broken promises reguarding ranger changes around the haloween patch, im glad too see ive made the right choice, knock WoW all you like, compared too this there customer service is gold
i mained the ranger, but right after i finished my guard i just didn’t think of him viable of doing anything as well as the guard, you only have 2 working group support skills, being the healing spring and the stone spirit, every other skill is just not usefull enough for the group, the traps are not spammable enough to provide combofields in a useable way and their duration is to short, either reduce total damage and make it spammable or reduce dps and increase the length of the traps so you can actually use the combo fields for more then one finisher!
please add an option to store your pet while in combat, so u can better loose aggro if needed.
there is way more that needs to be changed or buffed so the ranger can be usefull to the group and not only be a freeloading dps class without huge dps(as the pet is mostly dead in harder dungeons)
My main is a ranger. Bad pet ai and bad build diversity made me go for mesmer/warrior. Then I saw this thread talking about how bots are usually rangers, so I thought there must be something which is not wrong about rangers.
Well, now I use my ranger solely for farming/gathering.

That is a HORRIBLE idea, and it gimps the trap ranger builds, which is one of the only good builds we have as Rangers. If they gimped the traps like that I’d probably quit maining ranger, because then I wouldn’t be doing enough damage to help out the party in dungeons.

I find it sad when I choose a class in a game and level it up to the maximum level only to find out that it’s broken. I am not someone who then just starts another char with a different class.
I like to play the class I like and stick with it. Then finding out that it is pretty bad and you don’t get invited to groups because your class doesn’t contribute enough to the teamwork is just sad.

This kind of disturbed me, It’s actually true too.
But I don’t see why this thread is up, it reminds me of all the broken promises.
Hey Jon, you guys always say you observe the forums.
This is easily one of the biggest threads in this forum, why is nobody answering?
I SUMMON THEE JON PETERS (yet again. You did say you would appear when summoned in the first post).
Can we at least get a post-a-week dialogue of some sort going?

yes i got almost 3k tokens too but when i got my warrior to 80 i realized how ranger suck at dungeon and fractals. as warrior i have decent dps and decent survivability and dont have to put up with ranger’s crap anymore and i enjoy high lvl fractals. iam not saying: MAKE RANGER EASY CLASS TO PLAY I AM SAYING FIX THE BUGS AND MAKE SOME CHANGES THAT MAKES THE CLASS VIABLE some of stuff that should be addressed:
—-stupid spirits: if u want them to work u should waste ur points in trait and lose considerable dps
—-low survivability. particularly pets dies so fast leaves pet class without pet right at middle of the boss fight that is just stupid.
—-and just ask any-pro ranger player u like about how ridiculous pet is in high lvl fractals
—-pvp and wvw u can actually be good at it with any class because it highly depended on player skill even if u play smart with ranger u can be decent.
AND ANET WHATS GOING ON WITH SILENCE ?ARE ALL THESE GUYS MEAN NOTHING TO U. THEY BOUGHT THE GAME SO DONT BEHAVE LIKE DEVS OF THE 3RD CLASS CRAPY FREE ASIAN GAME.
(edited by saye.9304)
Wait, you mean people TRY to keep the pet alive? In dungeons and fractals I let it die, as it’s a hindrance. I run with a trap build and pow/vit/cd equipment setup and I do well enough to where I’m keeping up without getting killed. I rarely get downed in dungeons, and even dying is a rare moment for me.

You know, I used to really harp on pets being tripe until it dawned on me that I was just being lazy about it.
F1 and F3 are your friends and if it worked right all the time, we’d be golden.
There shouldn’t be a lag between mouse clicking it and it actually happening VS keyboard pressing. It should also actually work when you do it, regardless.
It tends to work better when your pet is in peaceful, but what would be great is if it kept a similar functionality when you have them on aggressive.
For example, on peaceful you can tell your pet to attack one enemy while you handle another.
But if you’re on aggressive sometimes your pet doesn’t listen and then begins to attack the target you’re attacking.
That’s annoying.
What’s also annoying is if you have your pet on peaceful and it manages to finish off the enemy you’re dealing with, your pet will return to you and do nothing until you tell it too.
What would be perfect is if you order your pet to attack one enemy on aggressive, it stays on the target you tell it until it dies, and then the pet goes on and attacks the enemy you’re attacking.
The pet controls we do have over the pet need to be just a bit more responsive, while at the same time the pets AI needs to be just a little more automated/intelligent in how it works.
Once you “get” how pets work and that you can’t just ignore/be lazy about what they’re doing, pet’s become like a second character that you have (mostly) complete control over.
They’re not bad by any means.
They define the Ranger class, but yes, to be a good Ranger this secondary handling mechanic of the pet raises the skill bar needed to play one.
You must master how to handle your pet or you will never be a good Ranger.

well the damage per minute of the traps would still stay the same, but the combo field would be way more usable

Yep, I now have a warrior and mesmer geared out and I can honestly see the diversity in builds with both classes VERY easily. Both are also quite fun to experiment with, personally I love switching between a berserker shatter build and a confusion/condition damage stacking build with the mesmer.
After 6 months I still don’t feel comfortable with the ranger class in any build (I speak exclusively with PvE/dungeons, not PvP). I spec in power and crit dmg/berserker gear, I produce laughable amounts of damage. I then spec in condition dmg/toughess with the same gear and try a condition build – still crap compared to other class’ condition builds (and WHY the hell does the short bow bleed ONLY WORK WHEN FLANKING?)
I even tried a full BM build – still annoying and sub-par as long as the pet skills are non-responsive. So yeah, after a very expensive parade in trying different exotic gear/builds, my ranger is now only good for holding my surplus items from other toons.
What a sad state of affairs.
ps: sorry to state the obvious again but I feel it needs to be said out loud to you devs so that you don’t stuff up GW3 – Never, ever make anything a core element of any profession/class. Even if pets worked properly and fantastically, what if I didn’t want to use a pet? Now you’re stuck with a profession that is forced to use a broken mechanic as part of its core functionality. Well done. To whom do I mail this nobel prize to?
22 pages of this topic… Sorry, but I can’t read it all. I should been look this since the release, but maybe I’ll read it out one day.
I just want to share my opinion.
I’m using Human Ranger as main, Longbow/Greatsword, Full Berserker setup.
I have the best gears on, with the best traits for damage, and I’m playing for Ascended gears right now. (Only have Asc. Quiver with berserker right now)
My problem is: After a day of testing, it is confirmed: A full tank builded Warrior does the same or sometimes more damage, than me. Don’t look me fool, I’ve used everything what I needed. For me, an “Ember” needs around 12 seconds to kill. For a full Tank warrior, its 3 to 5 seconds. A support Guardian kills it less than 7 seconds. That warrior had 37% critical chance and ALWAYS hit on criticlal, while my 67% chance allows me to shoot/hit criticals every second or third time. What the hell, I’m asking?! Not to mention my minus 6% crit damage becouse of Rune of Divinity nerf…!!
And pets are really useless, and liked races/types have buffs/conditions I just won’t use…
They die by one hit.
But basicly, I feel it my Ranger much more weaker than any Warrior, Guardian, Thief.
Classess should have equal damage (explained why in my Suggestions topics), but at last much more closer to those damages. I’ll make a video and show it off how bad the Rangers are designed. Auto-attack has a distance staged damage, so all I have to do is to just stand and push buttons. If I get closer to help my teamamtes, I do nearly half damage. Why for? I’ll let them rot next time

Well you choose a class based on its core mechanics, in any game. If you don’t want a pet, don’t roll a ranger. The same goes for other classes with stealth, elemental attunements, death shroud, etc. ArenaNet, or any other game developer, will always have its own vision for each class and it’s up to you to decide whether you like that style of play.

IMHO: Until 5 players can take 5 of any profession or any mixture of professions and complete pre-programmed content (IE: PvE) with in +/- 20% the amount of time (fastest/slowest) this game is horridly unbalanced.
The last few day’s I’ve spun up Crysis2 and HL2 to ready myself for Crysis3 (midnight tonight). Tomorrow I’ll be playing a high tech FPS and GW2 (and its issues) will be but a memory.

They usually don’t like communicating about upcoming class balancing/fixes. It’s odd but whatever they think makes their customer’s happy I guess. My best guess is that ranger has nothing coming up for it at the moment.
Ranger is still going to be my favorite in this game. I don’t mind the bugs that come with this class at all. Game is what… 5-6 months old? Imagine what will happen in a year or so, not only for Ranger class, but for all other classes as well. Give the dev team some time to fix these issues and i’m sure they won’t let any of you down

i’ve at least 700h of play on my ranger (it’s my main) so i’ve see a lot of problem, ranger can’t do nice burst damage (like warrior) cause lot of factors, at least 3:
1)There is no ranged weapon whit a decent burst damage, the only way to do it its with the gs but a melee ranged with berserker build blow up like a fireworks
2) Collision in this game don’t work properly indeed a lot of time got target obstruted in a complete plain ground and a lot of time my target go out of range when it is obviously in a range less the 1200
3) lack of utility skill , indeed the only utility “handy” are the zephir and rampage , when in party i use search and rescue too but now is bugged ad a lot of time don’t work like lick wounds(thx for this -.-‘) yeah the traps are the best utility of a ranger but if u don’t have a condition build is pointless…
for the pet problem i’ve solved it by using (inside dungeon) only pet who can provide a sort of boon like jaguar (might) and red moa (fury) i take them passive and keep spam f2 and f4 when rdy, ofcourse when i dodge an aoe my pet blow up (another problem of the rangers) but i can’t do nothing about it

The reason they don’t respond is psychological. They know if they just keep those Ranger fixes “over the horizon” there won’t be a mass exodus of their player base.
If they said what their plans were, like: “6 months from now we will buff a signet, oh and ‘fix’ Empathic bond so it doesn’t remove all conditions.”
I’m pretty sure we’d all just uninstall. So they’ll keep us in suspense instead.
Basicly, the game is under develop for 5(!) years. (It was announced March 27, 2007)
The release was in "12 August .28, so the game is 175 days old now. This is 6 months, not including the Beta Tests. If you think why they did not fix Rangers yet, think about how many giant issues this game has. Mostly made when they scratched some design…
Let them some time to work. (Even if you see facebook posts about AN cupcake parties)
Rangers will be balanced. Until that, you can keep playing it much more slower than other classes, or try out a new class and race with their “unique” story line.
Yesterday I’ve found out why to like my pathetic berzerker damages.
I have to hit a foe 43524637486 times with my Dhuumseal (GS), which looks like a bit of DMC game. Think the same and you may don’t get upset that much.

I don’t think he’ll want to say anything until the changes are 100% finalized due to the heavy (and insanely harsh) feedback he received when some of the previously stated updates were held back.

No. I think it is more that they don’t want to state anything that will not happen. The state of the game is changing around the meta, meaning PvP. And things need to get balanced as to not become overpowered. And, honestly, some things such as pet AI require a lot of work to fix. I think they want to fix things right, and that takes time.
Like I stated above, I don’t think they want to announce anything until it is set is stone to avoid the entire debacle that spawned the current state of this thread.

If that’s even remotely true, it’s the worst thing they could do. It’s time like these when I appreciate CCP’s community team even more than I already do.
CCP isn’t perfect. Not by a long shot. However, they are among the best when it comes to community interaction. You constantly see people from all across the development team (artists, programmers, etc) interacting with the community whether it’s a “serious” thread or not.
And more often than not, when an issue with the game is brought up similar to the extent of this thread, you would have gotten several dev posts by now saying something along the lines of “here’s the problem, here are our goals, here are our options, here is our timeline” (even if that time is months away".
The fact this thread has gotten this big and NO ONE from ANet has even dropped by and posted a simple “we hear you” should come off as very troubling. I think at this point, most of us are angrier at this complete and utter radio silence than we are at the state of the ranger class.
There’s a fine line between keeping quiet and ignoring your customers and I feel like ANet crossed the line into the latter when they let this thread get this big.

They said “we hear you” months ago. They know the ranger needs work. But with the feedback they keep getting, I don’t blame them for not telling us everything. We know they are working on it. We know the held back last time as they wanted to get it right. I’m all for letting them get it right instead of rushing it out the door to (maybe) please us. All we don’t know is how and when.
And if you have checked much of this thread, lots of it is irritation at them and people throwing in the towel (or at least saying they are). That is not the kind of environment I’d want to talk in, and I doubt they do either.

Yes, M-O-N-T-H-S ago. That’s the problem. We don’t know anything. We just assume they’re working on it because the last time they said anything at all was months ago. For all we know, they could have completely ignored class balance the day after they posted that. We don’t know. They barely talk to us.
No one is asking for them to rush anything out the door. I think any reasonable person wants them to take their time. We want them to get it right. We just want to know what’s going on.
Staying quiet because you’re afraid of backlash makes no sense because, most of the time, it’s that backlash that gets things fixed. What if a month from now, they release a massive patch with a bunch of horrendous changes to a bunch of classes? What then? Does their multi-month long silence help then? No.
They don’t have to make us freaking members of the design team, but a little back and forth every now and then certainly doesn’t hurt.
They are trying to not play “whack-a-mole” with classes after they did that with spirit Rangers and essentially neutered that build. We should all be able to respect that though we’re obviously none too pleased with the fact that it was our beloved Ranger class that that lesson was learned.
I do agree that it would be nice to just get a ping from them. Specifics would be nice but unnecessary while I think at least pinging us would be greatly appreciated. Those who would still complain are always going to complain, but those of us just asking “are you still there” would be much happier.
That said, if you look at the various class forums on here, each one seems to be largely untouched by dev posts in the last 2-3 months. 2 months for Thief, 3 months for Ranger, etc.

Oh my … I really liked my range. For over 4 moths it was my 1 and only toon, Did 100% world, and quite a few dungeon runs.
Last month I needed an alt for more crafting skills and another option for running dungeons so I leveled a guardian to 80 …
I never knew how unbalanced a ranger was until I played another class. Ok, the guardian sucks at range, but has great melee options and loads of versatility.
Now my ranger only farms Frostgorge, does some of daily stuff like underwater kills, dodging and crafting. My guardian does the heavy lifting in Orr and dungeons ..
I took my ranger into CoF p1 the other day for the first time in ages. In the room with the braziers / domes, my ranger greatsword, that I thought was decent before, felt like I was hitting with a wet noodle … Even my ranged attacks, that I thought were so good before, seemed average now …
The ranger needs a complete overhaul and re-design of all the trait lines, utilities and pet mechanics. Unfortunately, this is something Anet will never do. Throwing a couple of ‘fixes’ here and a ‘buff’ there will not do anything to solve the problems with this class.
My ranger was loads of fun to level, and now it is so sad to leave her kicking the snow in Frostgorge…

I disagree that Anet needs to communicate more, look at the mess Jon Peters caused by promising changes we didn’t end up getting (the infamous Aquaman patch). The level of ranger-rage in this forum would probably be a lot lower if Anet had never commented on the state of the class to begin with.

That’s merely speculation and I believe the Ranger forum would instead simply complain that the Thief forum has a post asking what people think about Thief gameplay.

Anet wouldn’t dare to ask about Ranger gameplay in a hundred kittening years.
It would be death threats all over again, like with the aqua patch. It was still hilarious though.

Oh man don’t even compare CCP to Anet. CCP beats them hands down. I can feel the hints they took from Eve, like unified markets and persistent world changing battle. But this is no Eve. It’d be nice to get a game that fell somewhere between “1-2 weeks to maxed out, then play in a sandbox” and “1-2 years to max out, fight over a galaxy.”.
That aside, I said what I did because I’d rather be pessimistic and be wrong, then be optimistic and be wrong. Know what I mean?
I’m very pessimistic too at this point. The lack of communication is not a good sign. Maybe a higher up at Anet banned John from the ranger forums, this could also mean that no one is working on ranger changes presently.
The strange thing about pet ai, that in Guild Wars1 they kept updating hero/henchman ai over the years & presently they are Einstein smart compared to a gw2 pet.
How about a potion, that can only be used in dungeons & increases my pets hp by500%
I find it sad when I choose a class in a game and level it up to the maximum level only to find out that it’s broken. I am not someone who then just starts another char with a different class.
I like to play the class I like and stick with it. Then finding out that it is pretty bad and you don’t get invited to groups because your class doesn’t contribute enough to the teamwork is just sad.
THIS! Oh my god, a hundred times this. I actually had no idea of any sort of difference until I started leveling a guardian… I mean waaow. Though I haven’t had much of a problem with groups, and I’ve never been kicked or anything, I’ve read enough on forums about players upset about it to know that it is a problem. I am sad because even though I have gotten pretty good at playing a ranger, I don’t want to think that people in my group are wishing that I was a warrior instead.
Now my ranger only farms Frostgorge, does some of daily stuff like underwater kills, dodging and crafting

like i’ve said…is only good for botting….
I don’t know if many people have noticed it, but Rangers are not necessarily meant for mass damage. If you look at the majority of the skills, they all apply conditions. I do not understand why so many people complain about the damage and speed of a ranger. My main is currently a Shortbow/Longbow Ranger. I love to pay WvW, and due to the many conditions and debuffs I can apply, I rarely ever have a problem in a 1v1 fight while I am running around solo. Sure thieves and other glass cannons hit me hard, but I can hit them hard back, while having decent defense. I don’t have any upgrades on anything and I rarely end up face down in a 1v1 (not saying I win, but I can get half way across the map at least with a group of 4 or 5 chasing me). I will too admit there are some bugs and things that could be different for rangers, but people complain to much about rangers not being able to do something that they weren’t meant to do. At this moment, I see/have only 2 problems with the ranger:
-The bug/problem with the Lick Wounds skill while downed.
-The fact that every class has a range that is as good as a rangers longbow(without traits applied)
With that said I believe that rangers are really great as they are and that Anet has done a pretty good job at keeping things balanced. Thank you Anet.
I don’t know if many people have noticed it, but Rangers are not necessarily meant for mass damage.
We were told that we could be viable in any way we chose to play, and ‘unparalleled archers’ sounds a lot like doing damage to me, if not being more efficient than other professions with the bow. We are not. We are underpowered/mediocre in EVERYTHING we do, damage included. I’ve been kicked from groups before because I play one for the reason “Your profession can’t deal damage”, and he’s right. I’ve spent hours in the mists doing the math on our damage builds and specs to other professions and it’s downright shameful.

You didn’t even MENTION our pets, how our melee needs so much more cowbell to even compete, how our builds are completely sub-par in every way to other professions such as warrior(Banners cannot be killed, and yet they do far more supporting per second than our spirits, which die whenever someone coughs.)
I’m done. I don’t see a reason to go on. Arenanet has proven in these past weeks of doing nothing, of ignoring our major problems and the major problems of other professions that can be exploited, that they don’t give a flying kitten. I’m done, I see little reason to play on my ranger any more besides RPing and maybe making some stuff for a guildie.
-The fact that every class has a range that is as good as a rangers longbow(without traits applied)With that said I believe that rangers are really great as they are and that Anet has done a pretty good job at keeping things balanced. Thank you Anet.
I play mainly pvp, and I’ve tested this, but you are welcome to do it as well to see for yourself that if you build for power of any kind, glass cannon, sustain, whatever, you will have less DPS than any other classes builds when mirrored with those stats.
I understand what you mean by the ranger being centered more around conditions and such, but that doesn’t mean that the ranger should be pigeonholed into running a certain type of build.
This is again, from a pvp exclusive standpoint, where the stat combinations you can reach in pve are not available to you. I wouldn’t take the super negative stance that the ranger is terrible like some people do (although that mostly just reflects a jaded community). But I would say that the longbow should be able to consistently outdamage the shortbow to differentiate itself and make it the more viable power weapon. This could be done be either increasing the attack pace of the longbow or increasing the damage each hit does, or both.
Lots of ranger utilities are subpar as well. Traps are probably the best mix of refinement, uniqueness, and effectiveness that rangers can add to their bar, which doesn’t help people feel like they are being pigeonholed any less.
Signets could be a bit stronger of an effect and have lesser cooldowns.
Shouts could do more (not all, mostly just guard).
Spirits could use anything positive. Better effect and survival as a generic blanket for the type of improvement they need.
Even rampage as one is pretty lackluster (the warrior elite signet essentially does the same thing with half the cooldown).
Rangers could use a heal that is affected directly by a trait (every other class has a trait that affects the cooldown of their heal, or provides some extremely unique feature. Rangers also healing their pets shouldn’t count as a unique feature, that should be a given. Healing Spring being effected by Trap Potency would be more along what I am mentioning).
Most of what I mentioned is pretty straightforward and it resembles the type of fixes that every class needs right now, on top of the mechanic bugs that are still in the game.

Soldier build GS ranger is quite fun to play with.Hopefully can reach 4K attack unbuff with the new ascended gears in future patch
You cant just dish out a 4k GS Ranger and not share that build.
I’m sorry,didn’t notice your post.
The build is 30/0/25/0/15.
Using full soldier stat gears on weapon/amour/trinket and all upgrade slots.
Currently as of 21st feb,my ranger has 3500 attack unbuffed and without any boons in Lion Arch, Max i think is 3506 for now since I’m not using 5 agony5 power on my amulet and back piece(amulet using 4 power only, back piece using +5 agony5 toughness)
updated picture of stats in lion arch without boons and with boons
