Love the idea OP. I currently run a pet tank build but it would be so worth re-working my build if I could gain my pets survivability and DPS, then I wont need to load up on Damage, precision and toughness exotics to think about using my greatsword for more than ten seconds. Put this in the suggestion forum please, never know, we might get lucky
I see what you’re getting at but I don’t like it. It feels too much like warrior banners (planting a stationary item down for boring stat boost) and having a single flair ability. As it is, pets have bugs yes, but they also add a lot of flavor imo. They have unique F2 abilities, as well as 3 other skills not player-controlled that add flavor to a ranger’s attacks.
What’s needed is simply a bug fix for our pets (and spirits since you mentioned them).
I like this idea! Totaly support this. This would solve alot. Those who want ranger with pet can have pet, those who don’t want the ranger with pet can play with this and those who just like both can alternate. A diplomatic solution.

this is a good idea and should be implemented.
Love this but some times i like having my pet, so my suggestion for this is that you can become one with your pet and get the pet skill and bonuses when you put the pet away. This would be awesome because sometimes the pet are really usefull be it reviving people while i’m kiting the mobs and such, but when i’m on top off a hill or tower my pet is useless unless i pick guard. This get a +1 from me
I really like this idea, probably the easiest (maybe only) way to implement it would be via an elite skill:
Signet Of Symbiosis
Elite skill ( beast mastery )
120s cooldown
Passive: you become one with your pet (which disappears), gaining different passive bonuses based on the pet’s family (same as ele’s skills that change based on attunenement)
Bears: Increased Tough&Vit
Birds: Conditions you inflict last 40% longer
Cats: Chance to bleed on critical hits
Hounds: Melee crits have a chance to KD
Moa: Increased Healing power and Healing skills stun nearby enemies
and so on….
Active: Reproduce the effects of your pet f2 skill
Pets are cool, but they are such a hassle.
How about instead of removing what we have atm, and putting in something completely new, they change it into a similar swap-system as elementalists have?
That way the people that like to have a tanking pet as it is atm (although tweaking is needed, no secret there), can keep doing that.
However pressing lets say… F5 switches into a new subset of spirit/similar (lots of good ideas in thread).
Could even add more than one subset, like…
F5: Animal spirits adding strong permanent buff + special combat move.
F6: Petsystem similar to what we have atm, with a physical pet thats melee or ranged
F7: Physical pets that can have their own specific signets for several (small?) bonuses decided by the player.
F8: New set of orders for pets: Pull and lure mobs to specific location, plant bombs…
None of the above thought through at all, some blazenly stolen from earlier in thread, and yes (especially on the F8 one) i kinda ran out of ideas, so use it for examples only please :p

Lets try to keep the F skills on 1-4 like every other prof, other wise it becomes waaaaaaay to complicated, which is something Anet is trying to avoid (ease of access to be decent at the prof, a lot more skill to be really good). I think a better option would be the Signet idea someone said a little ways up.
Awesome idea but I doubt we’ll ever see it. I’ve never been a big fan of pet microing due to the fact that relying on an AI will NEVER be perfect. Also…why would the “pet loving class” send his beloved companion to constant death <_<
If they did this, they could actually swap the spirit summon utility skills to something far more interesting as well. Maybe like…I don’t know…mobility?
