SOTG for Rangers
I use other weapons all of the time and do quite well. In fact, axe/dagger or sword/dagger is a better choice than shortbow in several instances. On the contrary, I strongly feel greatsword is the weapon you cannot do without in wvw. Any other opinions out there?

GS is an absolute must in WvW. I used to run SB/LB, but the survivability and mobility GS granted me is far superior to the ranged AoE of the LB. I can’t live without it now in WvW.
Again i will say that WvW isnt a place where you want balance.Large battles take place..numbers matter, massive fights matters, duels doesnt matter..sPvP is the place where you need balance, where 5 fight 5 and every member has a unique role…And in there,Shortbow is the master..
So a massive pet buff . Choko is happy
I’m watching it.
All Pets are getting more toughness/vitality.
spirits are getting buffed, though I can’t help but laugh when they said “We’re going to buff their Proc % from 50% to 75% so they proc more often” completely ignoring again…The bloody spirits have an ICD..
AI on pets getting improved
F2 on pets are getting changed to be faster, This might make Drakes more usable.

Yes the part for spirits was a joike…
Well thank god that Frost Spirit (only one without an ICD) will get a benefit from that 75% proc chance…
I’m eagerly awaiting the other buffs though…

Remember, those are just things mentioned in SoTG, and don’t reflect all the changes. Focus was paid more to pets/spirits this time around, so hopefully a few of the issues brought up in the old thread we had will be alleviated.

I’m sure there are other changes….We’ll see how much work was actually put into them though since this is something you guys talked about November of last year.

This could be massive for drakes… or even all the other pets, so guys, keep a close eye on pets once the patch arrives. I for sure will.
I’m a little ‘weary’ on Beastmaster Rangers becoming even stronger, they could overshadow other potential builds.
With that said, every buff to pets is a buff to all kinds of Rangers.
Let’s wait and see.

We can only hope that the ICD will get reduced (or better yet get rid of) for spirits.

Robert, I got a message from someone saying that signet passives are going to be improved. Are you able to verify this? I didn’t hear anything about signets in the Twitch interview.

Now this is a quality improvement to rangers in my opinion. It’s about time our pets have been seriously looked at. If I can depend on my pet to hit a moving target my ranger might just take a few steps up the ladder and compete with all classes now in WvW. As long as they don’t nerf my GS/LB i’m a happy camper with this list of updates.
Pets first, spirits second, and then rework trait lines third are my wishes for fixes.

No i liked the changes but still personally i wanted to see some weapon changes..They mentioned before about Longbow and still we havent seen any change..
Pets are still the suck. Pet AI will most likely still blow, cant test this because the company doesn’t have a test server although I am willing to bet on it sucking based on what I have seen.
And pets will never be fixed if a bird cant fly.
EDIT:
Glad to see signets are getting buffed as long as it is the entire signet and just not the active portion.

Indeed, the tooltip is mislabeled. There is no ICD on frost spirit.

I think pets are the best possible fix rangers can hope for since it will be like a 20% buff to your base DPS. In addition they are attacking at the same time you are…so it truly would be like having the two birds in the bush now in your hand.

Besides completely disagreeing with you that pets suck, I will say that I’m worried more toughness means bosses will aggro cats more. I have used the aggro table to my advantage before…
Nevertheless, only a fool worries about what cannot be controlled and/or what may be misunderstood. My worries could be completely unfounded.

I am with you on this. Sadly I do not see pets ever being up to par with the lack of control we have over them in this game. And since birds cant fly can we really say pets are working….just saying no reason I shouldnt be able to use a portion of my dps when defending or attacking a tower.
i’m still wanting Pigs to give up the abilities on our F2 instead of on the ground.

Ahh yes in pve I can see that. For me it is all about WvW and the lack of control we have over the pet with the extremely poor coding that are our pets make them near useless especially in a large zerg fight. Or if we are on a tower defending or even attacking a good portion of our dps is of little use.
Trust me when I say our pet AI is the equivalent to Einstein compared to Necro Minion pet AI.

It gets joked about a lot, but the underwater buffs were actually kind of cool, especially since I could compare old Ranger vs new against my other classes.
I have hopes for these pet and signet buffs. I learn more and more about pet use and management from these forums and videos, and while I have issues with them, I’m really improving how it works on my end. I still haven’t really played with spirits much, but any change that’ll pique my interest is welcome.
The changes for the ranger sound nice. Faster F2 will help alot, tougher pets is always nice to have especially in WvW and I’m wondering if the ranger signets will also be buffed. That would be decent.
Also the pet moving behind a target if it doesn’t have aggro is a nice change. It will help especially with the cats as they usually dont have aggro. That way they will survive alot longer.
What I still hope is that pets move faster. Somehow it seems to me that they were slowed down in a recent patch. My pet moves exactly as fast as I do (if it moves to a target) while it once was at least a bit faster than me. I’m not 100% sure if it is only out of combat but if the pet was a little faster it could hit more.
I did a test with a friend. He ran in circles and the pet did not even hit him one single time. While in combat chances are better that the pet actually hits as long as the pet is not crippled/chilled.
If a melee pet is crippled or chilled it is absolutely negated during that time and conditions stay forever on pets because it doesn’t ever clean them. A trait that reduces condition duration on pets would be nice.
What I also love is the change to retaliation and confusion for wvw. While I was able to not attack with confusion you can’t do anything about retaliation in zerg vs zerg and one single barrage was eating up 60-80% of my HP. Great change

Solution: bind pet keys to z, x, c, and v and simply keep calling the pet back with c. I always leave aggressive mode on: a departure from advice I had previously given. The reason is because sometimes the pet reacts faster than you to positive aggro. Again, I avoid negative aggro by constantly calling my pet. It’s a habit that’s so ingrained, it messes me up as I play alts: I instinctively hit “c” even when I shouldn’t! I am not joking here. But, yeah, it eliminates the issue of wandering pets.
Other notes: birds being able to scale towers would be simply fantastic. Also, you can pop spirits near seige to buff siege…only issue is that spirit prioritizes players over NPC so if 5 people are nearby, the seige will not get buffed. Another tower strategy Durz recently pointed out is muddy terrain + soft landing. You can jump off into a soft landing after casting muddy terrain to prep the enemies for your door rush.
Also, to get pet hits to land more consistently, try stuns, cripples, chills, and dazes. Also, consider slotting agility training if you can spare skirmishing points. If not, simply use signet of the hunt. Be sure to activate the signet well before entering combat: the buff will be on your pet (or you if you play signet of beastmaster) for the next 15 minutes.
I don’t know if you’ll find any of that useful? I have a new build I’ve been running, though, and I’m dying to share it with you guys. Maybe you’ll see some slow down spells from me in the video.

Exept that we have no control over them really, the ai is shoddy at best and the pet will actually help other class’s kill you. The pet is a free stealth point for theifs.
Hopefully pets hitting moving targets is fixed. It’s absolutely brutal that pet needs to stop to hit the enemy and while he stops the enemy has again moved away from the hitting range.
This assuming the pet ever manages to catch up to the target in the first place which is a long shot without a cripple.
“Also the pet moving behind a target if it doesn’t have aggro is a nice change. It will help especially with the cats as they usually dont have aggro. That way they will survive alot longer.”
Whoa! One of the WoW Hunter changes I longed for. Nice!
Where can I read about the upcoming changes?
Also, I’m concerned even a 75% proc for Spirit of Ice still does not justify a skill slot. The Warrior’s Banner of Discipline is basically a flat 15% dmg increase when you consider the fact it increases precision to the point 90% of your attacks are critical hits.
However, if they somehow resurrect the Ritualist’s usefulness in the Ranger, I will be very pleased.
better be a tangible increase, not 50 or 90. more like 160-240.
Can’t watch. What are they saying now? Does it look grim?

I definately agree with you on lack of control and thieves abusing their stealth on the pet and keeping you in combat speed to boot. I have said in the past that we need control over all pet abilities to really get their full effect but i’ll take a consistent hitting pet right now and keep pushing for more controls.
Right now i’m currently about 50/50 in thief fights but if my pet could actually keep up with a thief and hit them I really only think I would lose to them if I made a grave error in my thief defense rotation.

I really don’t understand why we can’t have a transparent and Subject to Changes text list before the patch hits. I like these exchanges, but yes, it’d be nice to just have active discussion about what you’re doing and why. I don’t play WoW anymore, but I still glance at Ghostcrawler’s comments because I like how blunt he is about why things are changing or not. I

Wow you managed to completly miss what this is supposed to do. They will release patch notes when the changes are about to go life. SOTG is supposed to communicate withplayers and explain their thought progress. If you dont want to watch the video then dont and wait for the patchnotes. Your comment is stupid.
This SotG was actually the best SotG so far. I’m sure there will be more changes for PvE.
more deadly than any that walks this earth. Put aside the Ranger.

I was hoping pets would have gotten a speed buff so players cant run away from them. Maybe next time.

What’s stupid about it? Even leaving Warcraft out of it, Champions Online and City of Heroes had devs posting all the time and previewing changes and notes. It’s a nice way to engage the community and it’s nice to just have them say, “We’re increasing proc rates” in a statement so that the forum can discuss it and at least we know it came from ANet and not just rumours or out of context quotes, as often happens here.

This could be bad for WvW if the pet is always trying to get behind a target that is dodging and moving instead of attacking the target.

You’ll just have to wait. When they finish with the stream, someone will post the transcript, saving the devs the time needed to create the text file while also actively communicating with the players live.
I might consider playing my ranger again a lot if I think they’re improving them build wise.
I still sign on and stomp people though every now and again for fun

Looks like the signet buff wont be all that for rangers. It sounds like it is for signets that affect a single stat…trying to think what ones of ours do that although they are slipping my mind.
