I don’t have any information on it and this will be pure speculation:

ANet got criticized by somebody who had something constructive to say about their practices that was more than the pay-it-foward circle stroke they normally receive, and the higher ups of TTH got worried that because of not saying nice things, somebody said real things, so they had the article pulled so they can still be in the running for exclusive information access and early reveal article rights.

Because why hold devs to a respectable standard and pay for a job well done when you can cup their juevos for them and throw money at the screen as they continue to do a poor job?

You forget the part where 2 weeks before the same writer praised Anet for their communication with the player base.

Which doesn’t make the latter article any less accurate. They have had excellent communication with the community with many many things, just zero with regards to Ranger in general and Druid.

They do communicate with the player base…. about the unimportant fluff. Go take a look at the general forum, they have as many red posts on the first page as the ranger forum has had in the past year.

Long live google cache:

From TTH:

"
Persistent Worlds: Where is the Profession Developer Engagement?
In this daily outlet, Lewis chooses one topic for discussion from Guild Wars 2. Today’s: There’s so little engagement between the profession developers at ArenaNet and the community that I often wonder if they even care about the bugs and mountain of poor skills. What are your thoughts?

There’s a brilliant satirical thread over on the official Guild Wars 2 forums that details one players “impressions” of the druid, when he is in fact referring to all the flaws in the ranger. Although the post was locked by ArenaNet (without any acknowledgement) there’s continued discussion about it over on Reddit.

What really caught my eye, however, was a comment made by Kitamu. In it he links all the interaction rangers have had with ArenaNet over the past year. None of the interactions talk about broken skills or skills that are outright terrible, and none of them really discuss the direction of the ranger or where ArenaNet want the base profession to be.

I know that a lot of time has been spent by the developers creating the druid, but I don’t really find that an acceptable excuse at this moment in time. If we take one small thing, such as pet names being wiped when you swap them, it’s a bug that has been in the game from when I first played in 2011. How, four years on, has it still not been fixed? How are Spirits still absolutely garbage when a warrior has brilliant Banners? How are the majority of Shouts still terrible? (has anyone ever used Search and Rescue?) and why is there no animation on Lick Wounds?

The problem is that much of these issues aren’t even subjective: they’re huge problems and so obvious that I’m often amazed that A) ArenaNet have never acknowledged them (not to my knowledge) and Haven’t in the space of 3 years even made any attempt to rectify them. For a team of hundreds, how can it be that they do not have the capacity to sit down and say “Hey, you know what, let’s fixed the name bug on ranger pets this week.” or “Oh god, spirits are absolutely garbage. Their active is useless, they’re static and also die super easy in Fractal’s. Shall we spend some time fixing them for the next patch and perhaps we could bring them in line with warrior banners?” Better yet, “I am sick to death of my pet dying in every single boss encounter. Can we address this at last?”

I appreciate changes have to go through testing but let’s not pretend it takes a long time to chat to players on a forum. Just popping in to say hello, acknowledge issues or even join a discussion should be part of every designers job. Leaving players in the dark is not only unfair, but it’s frustrating and results in thread after thread of issues being raised. If a developer took the time to regularly engage with the community, outside of POI, threads would naturally be more positive (players would know they’re being listened to) and might actually result in some worthwhile suggestions.

Although I’ve mentioned the ranger a lot here, this ‘issue’ isn’t even unique to them. Outside of the elite specializations, developer engagement with players is absolutely terrible and at times, inexcusable. As one example, when the last appearance of an ArenaNet developer is on page 20 and they aren’t even addressing a specific issue, something is seriously wrong with communication.

Several months ago I actually reached out to ArenaNet to setup a “Profession Health Check”. Every month I intended to email them a list of questions for each profession that were the main concerns, as chosen by the community. The idea being that it would improve discussion, pinpoint specific issues and allow a controlled dialogue between players and developers. The response? A great idea but no thank you – we’re too busy with Heart of Thorns. That’s absolutely fine because I fully understand that they are, but the problem is, when is any developer ever ‘not too busy’? Putting time aside to engage with your player base should be a priority much more than it currently is. "

Source:http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:5UE_TlnfUfcJ:www.tentonhammer.com/columns/persistent-worlds/persistent-worlds-where-profession-developer-engagement+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=au

I can honestly say the TTH article nails it. That it was removed really gives me the feeling that not buying HOT yet wasn’t such a bad idea.

I will be completely extrapolating here:

For the expansion, a-net decided to allocate a specific developer to a group of professions. They still all decide together, but one is “more in charge”. These can be seen for the specialization patch announcement:

  • Karl: elementalist, thief, guardian
  • Robert: mesmer, necromancer
  • Matt: engineer?
  • Roy: ranger, warrior

Robert and Karl did their job in time for the elite spec (with Robert being great). However, Roy got too caught up with the revenant. So warrior and ranger got left apart. For the engineer, I don’t quite know if Matt is really in charge of it, or if anyone is for that matter.

To fix this, Robert took charge of the warrior spec. Karl having bad reviews for his own specializations is probably fully caught up with it. So I would not be surprised if Robert also takes care of the ranger (which would be a good thing).

In terms of communication, it has improved a lot for all the classes which have had their elite spec revealed. All profession forums felt abandoned, but now they have “regularly” developer posts. The problem of ranger and engineer is that they do not have dedicated developers right now. That means no discussion either. But as soon as their specs are out, I expect this to be fixed. I do not know if Roy will come back on ranger and warrior when the revenant is in a more finished state.

In any case, I have faith in the future because I really think a-net did NOT have a balance team before but now has one, and I just hope they will keep it that way.

Put your hands on your heart and tell me whether any of you really think Anet will change their stance on communicating with the playerbase forum users based on this article and the referenced (closed) thread? I certainly don’t think so.

I love gw2. Great game that I have played steadily for 2+ yrs.

But, no, I don’t think they will ever be good communicators or code fixers. They try to fix one bug and create 4 more problems

The devs have asked for Feedback occasionally and then they don’t fix anything. I think its a combination of employees being overworked and the fixes we want not being at the top of their growing list of tasks.

Why do I have to login every time I want to post on these forums?

Last thing, go read reviews about ANET on Glassdoor. I don’t think it’s a good company to work for.

Last thing, go read reviews about ANET on Glassdoor. I don’t think it’s a good company to work for.

Woah ok, the way Anet is handling things isn’t ideal, but lets not not bring glassdoor into this. For one that site’s rating is highly subjective (my old company was terrible, but the reviews were highly inflated since management was writing positive reviews for themselves everyday. Similarly, one dissatisfied employee can repeatedly spam negative reviews). If we see a sudden spike in negative reviews, then yes it might be going in a bad direction, but so far there is only 1 negative review as of this month. The rest date back to July and all appear fairly positive. You have to pay attention to dates if you want to accurately judge the current environment of a company.

Aside from that off topic rant. It’s possible that devs are not allowed to engage with the community. They may be barred behind NDA’s, or management flat out told them to stay away until after elite specs were revealed for fear of spoilers or something. Not to mention, the way people have been posting has become increasingly…aggressive. Players are understandably frustrated and are taking out their frustrations in posts, but even a harshly worded criticisms gives devs an excuse to NOT engage. It’s stated right their in their “How to Give Good Feedback” thread

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/How-to-Give-Good-Feedback/first#post3383470

Now admittedly being the epitome of politeness might not garner a response, but not following their stipulations is basically guaranteeing no response.

Maybe rangers should do what the necros did for Robert Gee and make a specific thread asking for more transparency on development. There’s no guarantee we will get a response…but there is a precedent. But I honestly don’t think we’ll be hearing anything until Druids are released.

There’s one red post in the Engineer forums currently, and that was actually in a different forum before it was moved there. Other than that, there’s a few posts that involve beta weekend stuff, and that’s it. You have to go pretty far back on several of the sub forums to find a red post that actually addresses an issue.

As for your “WOAH OK”. I can say whatever I like. Nothing is off limits. I didn’t say anything abusive. In my opinion, they seem understaffed. I didn’t say they are bad, evil people but there does seem to be a fair amount of contention in the company. They wouldn’t be the only company that had that problem.

It’s not a particularly well run company. They set a business model that I like, but it does hamper them somewhat.

If they are behind nda’s to not talk to the community =its not a well run company.

People wonder why they dont talk to us, why the almost refuse to communicate, I took my shot.

Nothing, and I mean not a kitten thing stops Arenanet from coming in here and having a little heart to heart with us to make us feel better. Do they? No.

Will they? kitten no.

If this company wants to do everything so different from the rest of the mmo community, they can start by doing it somewhere it actually counts, by being really upfront and honest with the people who play the game.

It isn’t speculation on my part.

I returned mine yesterday. I’m not a regular on the forums, and I don’t frequently lobby criticism, but I’m not impressed with HoT right now, and I realized that if Anet isn’t going to deal with longstanding issues after 3 years, they probably never will — and the bungling gets really old. I don’t even main a ranger or necro, but it’s a reflection on Anet to not even bother engaging with the community, or acknowledging the issue. I don’t want to support that.

It’s sad to lose the hobby, but it’s great for my bank account (former gem whale).

So, this is my first time posting. I have been watching from the shadows for the past half year, and so I don’t know the full 3 year extent of the drama that has been going on. But it seems like 85% of the post or just people kittening about how bad ranger is. I love my ranger, he is my main and only character.

In this short time of observations, I hear more people whine about the bugs and how we get no love. That might be so as I rairly see a dev reply on this forum. That does suck for sure. But even if we have these short comings, the people who are “good” with rangers can work around the kittenstorm.

Will the ranger ever be what you want, probably not. But it doesn’t take away the fact that they are still strong contenders if you actually learn how to play 9ne rather than wanting an easy play style. There are other professions for that. If you are willing to quite the game because you don’t see the ranger as fit to play as, then either create another profession, or quit. If you can find a way to use the ranger in a positive way then I’m sure it would help out more people than yourselves.

We have trolls here that tell us to just change character, and for the ones who want to be a little kitten about it, then maybe that’s your sign to. Do you all really need a dev holding your hands? Or will you be a bad kitten and do it yourselves?

This article by TTH pointed out some stuff, but honestly, would you guylike some fries with your cryburgers? Wait till Hot comes out, go from there. Work on your ranger and learn it through and through if you main it. But crying about stupid kittens will be way less productive than working with and around our flaws and strenghts.

Read up on the 3 years and check out the list of bugs. There are plenty of legitimate issues being brought up. Most of those 85% comes from a good place, they love the class just as much as others and just express it differently. The community has workarounds already, and at this point, want issues addressed before the pile of grows even larger.

Reading about people quitting sucks. I haven’t have the displeasure of dealing with the bugs because of how short I have been playing, so this ranger seems normal to me. It’s all good. If anything there is some silver-lining to be had due to recent events. When it comes to the Elite specialization, the developers are listening to feedback, both for the Elite and Core and making adjustments on them.

This is evident by viewing Roy’s and Robert’s activity in their respective forums, Revenant and Necromancer. A certain dev is no longer with the company, so that opens up room for bigger and better improvements, as well as “new blood” to bring in new ideas.

Make no mistake, some of us come off as bitter and/or jaded, some more than others, but we all want Ranger to be in a better place.

I have to remain optimistic, its just not in me to be pessimistic, but I have to remain, also, a realist.

It makes no sense that a company would ignore its players and the issues with a class, since it literally takes money out of their pocket. There is no reason behind wanting a class to be sub-par to others.

Half the issue is other classes have been buffed to oblivion which left Ranger behind, if those classes were brought into line, Ranger would be fine. It is probably the most balanced class, but its inherent issues such as a lot of poor utility skills and all the problems with pets drag it down.

And yet they have for years. I am almost certainly not going to buy HoT specifically because Anet has ignored rangers for year upon year upon year. Why would I pay for more of that? Everytime I log in I see “no rangers” in the LFG for PvP and PvE (no rangers in PvE, I didn’t even know this was a thing these days!) and guilds consistently post “we’re accepting all classes except ranger” in their WvW forums.

It does NOT make sense on anets part and I don’t understand why they keep doing it. With as much time as I’ve invested in this game I should be a solid lock on buying the expansion, and instead it’s a long shot that I buy it.

Being casual and enjoying the Ranger is perfectly fine. Until you do more than that, you have no right to tell people who have been playing the class for years that they’re wrong.

Edit: I wanted to add a little cause I came off prickish.

I don’t think the ranger is weak nor in a bad spot, but relatively speaking the class has always been unliked. Anet knows the class with its pet system is a mistake and everything we get is -just- enough to keep the ranger mains tugging along. There are glaring issues that have never been fixed and the lack of information of our future elite spec on top of an overwhelming denial of fixes or communication to the base class -does- warrant a lot of worry.

Ya, that tends to happen after three years of “crickets…” responses to criticism and number crunching.

Virtually everything the ranger has right now is the result of non-stop kittening. Just as an example, we had roughly 2 years of our signets not even affecting the player by default. You used to have to bring a grand master trait just to get them to work like every other class.

It doesnt make sense to you that Anet is silent. It makes perfect sense to me. In the past Anet has made decision people disagree with, but anet get more flack when they state the reasons.

Some of you say you will not buy HoT because of this and that yet you have played for this long. What I have seen is more people have lefted because of the short bow nerf and the pet leash range nerf (where they have stated why the did so), then when they offer no explanation.

When they stay silent you still have hopes. When they say they will look into it you are filled with hope. 3 years later you are still playing, you buy skins and at the very least populate maps. You wath youtube and twitch giving content creators more incentive to create more which it turns help gw2 to reach more people.

If they flat out said we are not doing this you either quit or you have selective amnesia and ask when are they going to remove pets (when its been said they have no intentions of ever removing pets.)

This is also an mmo so some information can drastically affect the economy. Like making spears a land based weapon (hello underused legendries). Restricting most information to official blog post and live streams give players an even playing field.

The number one reason they don’t have to. They do not have to tell anything before its done. I see this more and more fans of films and books series telling the creative people what they should do with their art. Game creation is an art. From the combat to the story lines, The classes, the environments the are created by artist. In fact they are Gods of creation. This is an RPGMMO: they are the unseen hand of creation.

If you don’t like the pet then you are playing the wrong class. With HoT you can always play Dragon hunter if the other two archer classes don’t fit your liking.

Ranger have issues: 1h sword and axe aren’t ranger issues. Dps isn’t a ranger issue
Passive defense is an issue when compared to other classes , Wanted group support is an issue. (who wants regen when guards and eles pump out heals when needed, if regen stack in intensity then that would be something ( might be op).

Gw2 is so much more than one class. If none of the announcement have gotten you to buy hot and your not interested in continuing the story. I really don’t see how druid would make you change your mind.

In order to properly understand the big picture,
everyone should fear becoming mentally clouded and obsessed with one small section of truth.

“challenging group content” and an elite specialization that i’ll enjoy playing for the next 3 years. that’s what it’ll take for me to buy HoT.

The first part is now there. I liked what I saw with the first raids they will be implementing. Level of actual difficulty won’t be determined until we actually get into the expansion.

Daredevil and Reaper look interesting. the thing is, and i’m sure some can agree with me, whenever i switch classes to something more “meta” i eventually want to get back on my ranger because it’s just more fun to me. That’s why i’m holding out hope for Druid. even with all the bugs and problems I enjoy playing on my ranger more than anything else. i’ve learned how to fight through the bad design choices and bugs and i’ve rarely been kicked from a dungeon or fractal group. it’s not ease of play that most ranger players are looking for. it’s an end to always being a subpar choice. we don’t need to be #1 or OP, just a solid choice like bringing an ele, warrior or guardian.

Chronomancer puts mesmer there, Daredevil seems to potentially bring even more DPS to thieves, Reaper looked decent, Revenent looks like it could be very strong and very supporty. we’ll see what the druid reveal brings whenever that finally happens.

I’m sorry, Dave. I’m afraid I can’t do that.

thanks for the reddit thread JC, I enjoyed that. my main concern when they announced elite specs was that they would tunnel vision development using new tech, and leave the old stuff in the dust. I think Johanson said in a few interviews this would not be the case, theyd be going back and filling in all the gaps with the spec revamp. turns out, this wasn’t the case, not for the ranger anyway. and like you implied in your thread, the elite specs wont make me come back, or purchase HoT. but the correcting the vanilla game’s foundations will.

Ive been playing GW2 since the beggining.. I dont play much these days.

My main problem with GW2 and Ranger is that pets are a bad design.
They took some power from the Ranger and put it in a AI. Huge mistake, noone will enjoy it. We all want to have total control over our class.. Noone wants his % dmg to run around in circles.. Huge mistake and never aknowledge it, at least not officially

As a ranger main since launch, I can confidently say that I have 100% control over my class.

Though, the more I play my necromancer, the more I prefer it to my ranger.

Those armadillos would be a lot cooler if they looked more like real armadillos. mmm armadillos

It was literally all the trait did.
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Signet_of_the_Beastmaster

Lol, I remember when people counter-argued that it was justified because Ranger signets were different from other classes. It was great design though obviously to have people shoehorned 30 pts into Marksmanship just to get SoS to work.

ranger has so many problems…why anet doesn’ t solve em?

Because B2P model. They already have your money, so they don’t really care anymore.

Anet has learned that if anything is said players take the information and run with it. When what has bee said changes it causes more problem then remaining silent (players rage some quit and forums blow up).

There are also to many outlets for dispensing information. Anet has said that the root on the sword was working as intend yet people still ask we they will fix this bug. One dev said (on twitch) they will look into the root on sword 2 year later people are still using that quote. When later a forum post say he looked into and the changes he tried had a very minor affect and wouldn’t be implemented.

Anet has always said that nothing is certain until it goes live. They have clearly stated this many times: yet people still call anet liars for not doing what they have said.

Yet you people wonder why anet isn’t more forthcoming. Every week we see post about pet stow but, anet has stated they have no plans of ever doing it. This could change but this decision is solely anets.

We all have thing we would like to see in the game, but when you are demanding stuff I really think your out of line. I Think to many people are used to modding games (in one way or another) and don’t know how to get good or enjoy the game they have.

A suggestion is just that and some people act like anet must do x. I think GW2 is the best game out at the moment is it perfect no but what is.

Suggestion and concerns are always good. More transparency isn’t always the best. We get a lot of information from anet. The issue is its not the information you want but, its not all about you.

Anets priority is doing whats best for the game as a whole, not whats best for your main class.

The solution of having pet name on client side may not work when its laggy culling can still be an issue at time but namely always show because it server side. What happens if you remove the name client side pet with no name would be bad. Creating a check is just more work.

Rangers act like anet doesn’t like ranger but they have put more work into the ranger just with the 45 pets and accompany skills. We also have the luna wolf. Maybe we don’t appreciate the work that has gone into the ranger. Do we need work yes, but to say anet hate rangers is bs.

I agree with you and this is true with most games, however I do not think any company hates a class I do however think they may neglect from being to popular at one point in time and which causes issues in pvp, it is kind of a necessary evil. However it makes way more sense that they have trouble because of their many pets, personally I could take the trade off of having class pets instead of grabbing all of them from the world, as long as they where unique and cool enough to play with.

A while ago, there were attempts from Anet to create Profession Forum Specialists

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Forum-Specialist-Program/first

But it looks like it never got off the ground. I’m wondering if this would be a good time to bring that back? I’m not sure what that that…duty would consist of. But if it’s a way to have a liason between player and developers, it’s a lot better than what we currently have.

It at least solves the problem of needing a dev to read every post and respond to it if we had someone who could do summaries and respond on their behalf.

But that could only work if Anet is actively in touch with those people and communicated with them, and if one thing is clear its that Anet is rather oblivious in how they should communicate properly.

Ive been playing GW2 since the beggining.. I dont play much these days.

My main problem with GW2 and Ranger is that pets are a bad design.

Not necesarily a huge mistake, the mistake is the AI is so bad and they forget this exists when making content so that the mechanic becomes useless.

Also someone talked about having NDA’s for the devs and thats why they are not communicating, I am not talking about the specific situation here but I remember a dev posting a while back that he had to go trough some communications course before he was allowed to post again. The dev in question was sometimes a bit clumsy and overly enthousiastic (saying things he was not allowed to say yet) but above all that made him a lot more honest with us and I personally liked that, but apparantly within Anet they do not. On the other hand you see a certain employee being quite disdainful and belittling towards players and that behaviour is apparently acceptable. Do note that this was quite a while ago, I don’t know if Anet still works like that.

Also does anyone really know who is working on ranger?

The article in question was specifically praising their communication with elite specializations, not base professions. Base profession communication is non existent. It’s a distinct difference

I have not pre-purchased HoT. I am not sure that I will even buy it. It all depends on whether Druid is a good spec or not and whether they fix Ranger core issues.

So far I feel that all of the elites other then DH and Reaper are crap design. There is no trade off, they are just upgrades to the core classes.

I strongly disagree. From your examples, it seems you only focus on the class mechanics (DH and reaper CHANGE their class mechanics while the others ADD to the class mechanics). But that is a wrong way of looking at it: the added new class mechanics is a trait. Most traits ADD something. But the tradeoff is that you could take another trait instead. All elites feel like while they bring something interesting, giving up on one core specialization is difficult because usually the core specializations interact well together.

I wish that I could have a trait that gives one extra dodge or a new F ability any day. You need to understand that adept level traits are usually gain 5s of regeneration when you drop under x% of health or some such crap.
