The Ranged Ranger
I’m gonna tell you right now, trying to use the longbow for Dungeons and PvP is a bad idea. Dungeons will make it very hard to sit at max range to get the most out of your #1 and any Warrior/Theif is going to close the gap and puree you before you can pump out any significant damage.

Rangers are in a difficult position with ranged weapons… Have u read the threads around and done some research? I’m running pure melee lately. But that said ranged isn’t BAD. I have full berserker build and I have alot of dps an can stay alive as well. Shortbow is still fine and puts out steady good damage. Longbow is more for the skills you really can’t use it for long bc of its crappy autoattack. It’s not a power longbow sniper thing at all. Put in defensive tricks for pvp. But you really need vit for dungeons and pvp. I stay alive quite long in dungeons bc I have enough vit to go around. IMO pets are pretty useless in dungeons and pvp so don’t need BM. I don’t trait BM but my pets do fine as long as I keep an eye on pet swapping and keeping them at range bc ranged pets for tough places like dungeons can stay alive and help more. Pets will die quick regardless whether you trait them or not in pvp or dungeon so save it for yourself. But if you’re a multitasker pets can still help without being traited
I do not consider the +1000 #1 damage as realistic because its so high, but lets compare the damage of Longbow with other weapons:
Longbow: +1000: 219 / 500-1000: 158 / 0-500: 122
Shortbow: 97 + 128 Bleed
Great Sword: 147
Axe: 122
Sword: 146
Nothing is stopping me from switching to short bow once the knock back on Long Bow is on CD and the ‘Warrior’ is on top of me. Moreover; I keep reading on these forums Ranger is a great kiting class, would be great if some one could fill me in on what utilities to use?
I run a high power decent survivablity build for both WvW and PvE.

Longbow is the primary weapon only switching to warhorn for speed.
My utilities are Healing Spring, QZ, Lightning reflexes, and i switch between signet on the hunt/wild. Elite is Entagle.
Full Valk armor with Rune of the Ranger. Berserker accessories. Berserker bow with 5% damage sigil.
Using your evades and knockback at the right time is key, do it too often and you lose endurance dont do it enough and you’ll be sitting in melee range of them enemy.

Its supposed to be a burst weapon, longbow was THE burst weapon in beta along with GS, then they kitten it with 30% damage nerfs and now its practically useless aside from its knockback and aoe tickle. They need to revert that damage nerf, badly.
To the OP, if you want range, check out rifle warrior, no buggy pet to rely on and does more damage, and is more stylish if you are into guns. I for 1 love bows more but sadly longbow rangers suck and shortbow isnt my style so Im kinda waiting for ranger class to get buffed or swtor to go f2p, whichever comes first.
Looking at posts on Long Bow I am surprised to find data and information that show LB is better than ShortBow only if talented and only +1000 range which is not practical in any way or form in GW2.
What that says is Short Bow is the best chocie regardless of Power build or Condition build Oo
So a Ranged Ranger needs to scrap the LB completely because talent(ing) it is a huge investment and just go for SB spec and then spec condition or power depending on preference.
My research also shows that Toughness+Power+Vitality+Short Bow is still a solid build!
Now could some one tell me what are our ranged pets?
With feedback from this post and others I have come up with what seems as a good Ranged Ranger build:

Haha that’s exactly what i mean. It’s no longer a power longbow sniper thing. Which is should be. The longbow def needs to be buffed. SB can be ur high rate of fire pew pew shooter but longbow should be super powerful killshot sniping weapon.
I use longbow/Shortbow for all forms of play right now. Love both weapons. Longbow is very useful with the skills it has. Don’t listen to all the negative people.
Taking longbow for point blank shot alone is worth it imo (especially in PvP).
The ranged ranger isn’t super viable atm. Broken traits and weapons, underpowered longbow… Don’t do yourself a disservice. I wish the game was just starting. I would not have picked a ranger as much fun as I wanted to have playing with bows.
SB + Axe/Torch is a really awesome condition based weapon set and really fun in my opinion.

Don’t listen to those few posts that state the Ranger is great still… read the post a few threads down regarding the SB not being 40ms nerf… and you will see how the Ranger community truely feels about the class and how much the devs at ANet seem to care about fixing us.

Even in 8v8 where there can be huge amounts of aoe going on, I find it quite easy to keep my pet alive.
You’re always going to find more people griping here than people praising the game, as those will typically be in the game enjoying (rather than here complaining).
i have done very little spvp yet in this game yet, was an arena master in WoW, tho i didn’t start GW2 right when the game came out and didn’t play in beta, havent been playing like crazy so hadn’t reached anywhere close to max level yet, and was still doing mainly WvWvW and dungeons / pve to keep leveling up… wvwvw and dungeons pet is dead 80 percent of the time you are in combat and actually using them, if you keep them on passive i’d lower that percent to about 60 percent of the time. Although i havent found all pets and am by all means not claiming to be the master of rangers. Just saying from an experienced gamer, i am trying to give the OP a suggestion in avoiding our class altogether and going with another might be a better choice if he wants to play a RANGED class and actually make a difference.

Replace the Sword with an Axe by preference, I do PvE mostly so the root isn’t too irritating.
Traps are just too good to pass up right now. Everyone is up in arms over the QZ/SB nerf, but Traps are still very powerful for control and support. Bring Healing Spring as well and your everyone’s best friend.
I’m new here and my ranger is about lvl 40 only. I’m an experienced mmo ranger and i know what a ranger must be able for. In the beginning my g-mates told me that each class is balanced here and i can start any prof i want. So i chose my ranger. On spvp i noticed that my bows don’t make me feel satisfied no matter what build i apply. Later I started a warrior, then a guardian, then all the rest just to check their skills and the possible way of playing in spvp/wvw and pve.
They are all great! Only a guardian seemed a bit boring. Today on spvp i dueled with a mesmer – THAT’s what i call unique! Then i fought with a thief – daaaamn, he was stealthing from time to time hiting me in my back and disappearing again. – that’s pretty cool style. I wish i like melee classes and play them, but i don’t.
Other profs are just fine they are doing what they are supposed to and do it really well. Elems burn, necros use lots of pets, warrs smash, engins explode…etc. I wish i could say, im a ranger and i deal great damage at distance with my bows, or eat my foes’ faces with my pet in BM build or DOT them to death with condition build etc , but i can’t. I’m a ranger who has to fight with a sword and torch coz they hit much harder! WHY??? I’m a RANGER, am i? I don’t want to play a warrior with the rifle. I don’t want to play magic style rangers. I want to be a classical archer with the bows!
LB is really a joke coz of its speed and poor damage. SB is nerfed and its dots work only at flang and back (why btw?, one’s a** hates poison more then the face?)
I left swtor because my commando was a piece of shi* in pvp. I left wow long ago coz of stupid melee zone (won’t back to pandas don’t suggest). I left many mmos because my favourite ranger class was poorly designed or i had to play someone else.
Is there a build for LB/SB? Or i should take a giant Greatsword with my RANGER to be more or less useful? /facepalm
My guildies told me yesterday i should try a guardian, he’s much better for the guild than a ranger /crying face.
