Ranger Skills and Traits Clarifications/Fixes
Thanks, misterdevious. I added that information to the Utility: Guard and created a new Utility Type: Traps for the other information

You might want to add that using Signet of the Wild with Signet of the Beastmaster will prevent you from interacting with some stuff since it’s considered a transformation. (ie: no stomping, no picking up environmental weapons, dropping the orbs in the swamp fractal, etc)

Trait: Barkskin the effect triggers individually for pet and ranger an stacks ADDITIVELY with both protection and frost armor which can net up to a 73% damage reduction.
By individually I mean if pet has 25% or less health it gets Barkskin, if ranger has 25% or less he gets Barkskin, the other will not gain the effect until they reach the appropriate health %

Oh yeah, Sharpening Stones can be activated mid action, you remember that rapid fire you decided not to dodge? Well it’s gonna bleed you for another 5 stacks because of your stupid.

The regeneration on pet is not increased with “Compassion Training”. CT however increases regeneration on character.
Thanks, Valerith. I’ve added the info for Crossfire and Concussion Shot for now. If anyone would like to put in some testing time for that, it’d be appreciated. Else, I’ll put it on my backlog of things to do.

Excellent! Thank you again, all of you.
I have added your entries, but please double-check.
I even included links to your video, Valerith, as I believe seeing it explains it much better.

I thought this would be about longbow and how it says 3/4s cast time but its really 1.25~
(The only thing i noticed that you missed tragically)
The whirling defense, splitblade/sharpening-stone and sick em things are nice to point out, but everything else… ehh
Nothing that playing a spec for a game or 2 won’t tell, but okay.

I’m waiting on video to confirm that it really is ~1.25s.
I’d say plenty of these things are things you wouldn’t notice unless you tested them explicitly.
I didn’t know the durations on the signets and weapon skills effects given to pets.
I’m sort of curious about Signet of the Hunt now with Signet of the Beastmaster as you give up 25% movespeed for 30 seconds (or 24 if traited that way) in order for your first hit to hit harder. Since you have 30 points in Marksmanship for this, that first shot is a 100% crit that inflicts vulnerability … it’s an interesting concept.
… it even has me looking at the longbow for inflicting a high damage initial hit.

That was a thing beta weekend when glass cannons hit obscenely hard.
Longbow, right now, doesn’t do enough dmg with a single hit to merit it, like at all.
You might as well roll a thief, go half glass and launch a clusterbomb with an all around better version of that signet that doesn’t involve a t3 trait.
Or even go glass cannon and land that 13+k steal-stun spike.
(edited by garethh.3518)
Since we have enough people claiming in the other thread that they have tested and gotten 1.25s as the actual time per shot for longbow auto-attack, I’m adding that entry … will remove/edit if someone can provide some video proof that says otherwise.

Hey, cool list. I’ll be sure to put this in front of the balance team so they can take a look at it!
Robert, I’d like to point out something regarding the issue with the Activation Speed vs. actual refire rate for Long Range Shot that the OP mentions. This does not seem to be a tooltip error, but rather a design oversight where the skill is balanced around the activation speed but the significantly longer animation length disrupts the rate of fire dramatically, resulting in the Longbow’s #1 being much slower and consequently weaker than it’s probably supposed to be. This is probably 90% of the reason why there is so much commotion about the Longbow.
This seems to be a problem affecting many #1 skills and causing the DPS of those sets to be much weaker than they should be. It seems to affect, to some degree or another, Longbows, Pistols, Scepters, and Staffs across professions along with the Thief’s Shortbow.
(edited by Einlanzer.1627)
I’m not sure if this has been mentioned, but SB #2 has no projectile finisher chance on it unlike the similar Axe #2.

Save your time. It’s junk, even when stacked with 25 stacks of bloodlust. I run a pure GC and I was getting only around 5k or so on soft targets with 4k+ attack and 105 crit dmg. Not worth ditching piercing arrows for it.
I never tried it with SotH + SotW + 25 stacks of bloodlust and might though, but that’s more of a theoretical exercise seeing how limiting the condition is to land that one shot. Not to mention the uptime to that is junk, since SotW basically has an elite like cool down. It’s not going to turn LB1 into killshot unless you’re hitting lvl 1 lowbies.
You forgot that swoop displays more damage than what it actually does. Proof.

While were on this tooltip journey, I tested Concentration Training yesterday and saw no effect. Anyone confirm this?
I used to use Concentration training all the time and it gave the 50%, haven’t been using it recently.
It’s possible you used the skill outside of combat. The pet buff traits (once which boost pet stats) only seem to be active while in combat. This can be really unfortunate if you like to do things like use the red moa’s Furious Screech for the Fury buff before the encounter begins. An ideal fix would be to change the bet buff traits to be active all the time (including when you are out of combat) so that the stat boosts are displayed on the pet management tab and using pet skills before combat begins (like using the buffs or starting combat with any skill which benefits from one of these traits – it simply won’t boost it because the trait doesn’t activate until after combat begins).
Another thing I’d like to mention is that pet F2 skills don’t display a their recharge timer even when you change the options to show recharge timers. It would be great if F2 skills could show recharge timers so I can make better informed decisions with my pet.

Something the tooltips are not clear about is this which I found in the -Little Ranger Tips- discussion thread:
(Quoted from: awe extender.1908)
“Remember not to engage / start a fight with pet F2. The extra buffs from traits don’t apply. You have to start a fight and then use F2.”
This is significant because more often than you think you will begin a fight, or swap pets to engage, and the first thing you might want your pet to do is an F2 attack. I wonder if this is relevant to the obviously large number of incorrect tool tips in our ranger portfolio and if it can get some developer feedback as well.

We’ll see how it pans out. Ultimately it’s going to mean a larger codebase that has to be maintained. However, it could decouple some things, making it easier for them to maneuver with changes.

Someone griping about ranger in a non-constructive manner {I’ve heard this before}
How’s spending your time making non-constructive posts working out for you? Resulted in anything of merit?
No? <sarcasm> That’s so surprising </sarcasm> :-p
I don’t understand people giving Robert flak. He told us he’s not on the team directly responsible and that his limited “power” with respect to Ranger changes is to provide a Ranger perspective during meetings.
I don’t agree with everything he says about the class (i.e. you won’t catch me using Longbow in WvW), but I’m not going to give him flak for things a team he isn’t on does or does not do.
Otherwise, I’d blame all of you for things complete strangers do :-)
Anyways, back on topic … let’s try to comb through the wiki and older videos for any other content for this thread … things that are wrong, things that explain Ranger “stuff” better, etc.
After we’re “done” with this topic, I have an idea for another one that could be helpful for ArenaNet and allow the Ranger community to vent their frustration in a more constructive manner … but I want to get one thing “done” before I start another … I’m spinning enough plate as it is without making little projects for myself on the forums :-)

“Words without merits” are non-constructive posts?
How long we’ve been told/waited for this “balance”? while other classes got “balance”- improvements and enhancements?
Obviously,

I actually fear the next patch… because everytime something gets “fixed” I like to play with the Ranger less and less…
I actually fear the next patch… congratulations!
This thread is good.

Look at the Ranger bug list thread. Look at all the bugs which have been there since launch and are still in the game. It’s great that threads like this exist, but don’t get your hopes up that this will achieve everything you want it to. The problems are many and progress is slow.
I dont play a ranger got couple 80s normaly i play as a guardian , and one thing i noticed is the Entangle bug , wich makes my char tiwtch and bugg out in the root , with my skills resseting all the time resoulting in me beeing unable to do anything while rooted. I’m normaly killed by the time root is gone or someone kills it since i cant activate skills nor do anything.
Reason for this post is cause i’m really anoyed 80 % of times we clash in wvw i get the bug and i’m dead, this also doesnt happen on any of my other characters just the guardian.
I just wonder whats the cause of it.
Obviously, people are not reading the previous posts on the reasons for this list, so I’ll list again since scrolling is “hard”:
(1) It gets information about Ranger skills out there for the Ranger community so that other Rangers can learn and improve
(2) It collects information in a clean way for the devs to take a look at (that bug thread hasn’t been “clean” for a while)
Even if we don’t get any “fixes”, it at least gets information out there for any rangers, new or old.
@Burnfall: this thread isn’t intended for you to gripe about the Ranger class. Post those elsewhere or I’ll ask for a moderator to “clean up” the off-topic posts (admittedly, they’ve hit my off-topic posts a few times). I’d prefer to not do that, but I prefer things stay “clean”.

After extensive testing I have discovered some interesting things about pets and boon duration.
Concentration Training at this time gives no increase to the duration of boons.
When you look at the descriptions of skills on your pet that grant boons, the shown boon duration is calculated based on your boon duration, not your pet’s, despite your boon duration having no effect on the duration of your pet’s boons.
To sum it all up your pets have a boon duration of +0% no matter what you have or what traits you choose.
Pets skills will always give (including non-F2 skills) one of the following, no matter what the skill says:
10 seconds of regeneration (Fern Hound and Bears)
4 seconds of protection (Blue Moa)
15 seconds of fury (Red Moa)
10 seconds of power (Jungle Stalker)
10 seconds of swiftness (Birds)
EDIT
Important bit on this post is the information about skill descriptions being misleading based on your boon duration.
(edited by Undean.9704)
Before I add this to the list, Undean, quick question. Did you make sure you were in combat each time you tested your pets’ boon application skills?
If not, please check the list as I believe we already have that “issue” listed. If I’m incorrect, please let me know.
I appreciate you taking the time to test this.
Note to everyone who is helping or wants to help with this. If you are testing something and it requires a 2nd person (i.e. how much hp spirits actually have), feel free to PM me in-game or PM me here to try to setup a time to test it.

Concentration Training is still working in combat, I really wish my pets -always- had their stats boosted though instead of it being combat only…
As their mother, I have to grant them their wish. – Forever Fyonna
EDIT
It seems me being in combat does not make my pet enter combat like how your pet entering combat entering combat does make you enter combat.
So yes concentration training works if your pet is in combat, not just you.
(edited by Undean.9704)
I just went and retested with the Fern Hound and Jungle Stalker to see if the trait worked in combat and there was no change.
I’ll take a screenshot of it working when I get home
PS: were -you- in combat? Or was your -pet- in combat? There’s a difference.

You were correct about my pet being in combat and me being in combat seem to be different. Edited my above post to reflect that.
Thanks guys. I updated the various pet training traits’ information and added a new entry in the last set about entering combat.

Just thought I’d add (as I don’t believe I’ve seen it posted yet but I also haven’t read all of this) that the number 5 harpoon gun skill “Ink Blast”’s text would perhaps make you think you evade while retreating and that the “blinding trail” left behind is a smoke field.
Neither is the case. If anything, the latter should definitely be. It’s basically the same “thing” as a jellyfish’s ink cloud, minus the smoke field.
C’mon, Anet. Show us water folk some love.
Found out just now: Tail Wind and Furious Grip have no cooldowns! (Skirmishing 5 and 15 respectively).
How I Tested: Go underwater, aggro a mob.
- While in combat, go to surface then dive back in.
- Repeat.
- ???
- PROFI—- err… Enjoy stacking Fury and Swiftness!

Hey there, how about posting the many things that need to be fixed to BENEFIT the already TERRIBLE Ranger class rather than presenting the balance team with mostly things that will make us even weaker??
What about pets that don’t hit moving targets, depriving us of loads of damage?
What about F2 skills that only activate when they feel like it?
What about the seriously underpowered longbow in need of a boost?
The ranger is the most neglected profession in the game.
EDIT:
Also, are you actively trying to get Anet to nerf the Jaguar F2 stealth skill? That is one of the few things that helps me to kill people in WvW ASSUMING I can get them to stand still! We don’t need nerfs, we need buffs.

I’m not at all misunderstanding. I know perfectly well that’s what the OP is doing. I have a problem with it though. That problem is that the balance team will look at that and think (given their track record), ‘hmm, Rangers shouldn’t be able to do that, let’s nerf it’. Frankly, I’m not sure how many more nerfs or drawbacks this profession can take before becoming completely unusable. This thread would better serve the Ranger profession by first presenting Anet with the serious problems that need fixing.

So you’d rather have people be left in the dark and QQ about mechanics they don’t know anything about than present all these information to them? We’ve actually been uncovering bugs with our mechanics like the Barrage only spreading preps from the 2nd “wave” onward. Hopefully the devs see that and fix it so all waves can spread conditions.
Besides, with cooldowns still ticking while stabled and quickness being nerfed to 50%, there isn’t much ranger mechanics left to nerf.

You hope.
Its just matter of perspective, and Anet has a terrible track record with the ranger so pessimism is entirely reasonable.
They haven’t made a single new build viable since launch, it has only been back tracking threw a few lesser builds and coping with ‘bug fixes’ for the class.
At best they made greatsword mediocre instead of just bad.\
I’m more for the list thoughjust because, with all the information out there, since Anet doesn’t really test their own stuff extensively, change seems more likely and, at this rate, with this game’s TPvP being pretty much dead in a year~ change is the only hope.
What I SERIOSLY want to see is Anet setting up specific brainstorming threads based on what their dev team is focusing on working on.
That’d be utterly amazing of them, free ideas and feedback from all skill levels for them, and a more loving community to boot because they feel wanted, win/win.

Added everything posted since my last time saying this :-)
Very nice find on the Tail Wind and Furious Grip. Tested it myself and then had a good laugh.
Also added the information about pets having trouble hitting moving targets (and why) as well as the F2 issue. I included a way to deal with that for those who aren’t as familiar with it. Not how things should be, but when you need that F2 skill “right now”, it helps.
Does anyone know how much Compassion Training increases the healing on the Ranger? I’d love to know and add that info to the list.
