What’s new with rangers? Since the first week of close beta as an ele with all the builds i have tried, this profession was always the easiest for me to kill; Now all of the sudden i see so many using a massive healing/dps build where It is such a challenge and some of them even impossible for me to defeat theml.

the players have become smarter, using their pets better. more fine tweaked builds , gear set ups etc to fight back against every other class out there.

some of us were doing well on rangers before it was cool XD

We’re learning how to mitigate a bad situation – and some of our children have actually done better than we could – my son built mine and 1v1 he’s unbeatable – really.

We dueled today and for over five minutes – 1v1 we’re getting better at pet management and 1v2 or more we don’t die until it’s three or more (easily that is).

We’re still glass – just better built glass.

Rangers are still awfully designed by-and-large. The OP appears to have run into one of our few builds that actually work as intended. Don’t you worry your pretty little head, it’ll probably be nerfed.

Eh, it’s probably the trapper build knights armor setup you’re seeing and I can tell the context you’re referring to is in a 1on1 situation, probably a duel. And if it’s not a trapper build , it’s probably some apothecary bunker healing condi dmg build , which doesn’t necessarily work most of the time because people clear conditions rather quickly, especially someone good at their class.

Don’t worry, like Frosty said… There’s already been discussion on the thought of nerfing traps and making it where only one can activate at a given time so yea although it’s not official at all. It’ll probably be nerfed too.

Also, some people don’t realize our pet f2s are broken. pet swapping is faster than pet cooldowns so if you pet swap and use f2 even if it’s on cooldown it still works, which will probably get ‘fixed’ much like EB was fixed last patch which pretty much screwed us over as a skirmish class basically, any class that knows a pet transfers conditions from us to that already useless pet is just gold for them. Time snares around 8-9 seconds apart and your pet will always transfer the conditions to himself….

Our grandfather trait quite literally kills us passively now and there really isn’t another trait in that lineup that even compares… It’s our only good condi removal so you need it but it also destroys our already horrible pet. That’s the crux of the EB fix last patch. We have to use it or force a utility slot / heal slot or we won’t have any condi removal period. This alone hurt rangers BIG TIME (and i dont think people realize just how much that affects us, it hurts ALOT) in both 1on1 situations, spvp and tpvp (probably not tpvp AS much because group members/combo fields can make up for healing and condi removal).

But yea, don’t worry, each month goes by and classes get buffs and we get nerfs… Chances are in some time this post will be irrelevant.

It currently takes ( on average, of course) three people to efficiently take me down in sPvP. Using a good healing/condition damage build with proper trap and pet utilization, I can usually take two players at once. I have had a few issues with really GOOD thieves or guardians mucking that up for me, but no profession has given me a major issue 1v1 other than thief, and even then it is only then they need to be particularly good.

Admittedly I don’t play tournaments, so this is strictly talking about regular sPvP matches.

I don’t think anything changed so much as people are starting to understand the class rather than complaining about it not being able to be played just like they wanted.

I use a high healing/toughness build with 25 in beastmastery and I fair well outnumbered in WvW and sPvP. The downside is I don’t kill things too quickly. Unless they are super squishy and I can combo knockdowns and dazes.

It’s just fortunate for the Ranger community that there are a lot of bad players out there, so they are allowed to win quite a few fights because of this, and still feel good about playing the class.

When you don’t provide more information its kinda hard to answer you but its possible to die to any profession as a decent player.

If I can survive a Thieves burst in Glass Canon build, that does easily 50% more than they do in sPvP, while dodging cat shots, and treb shots, what makes you think a Ranger could ever kill me in sPvP?

First; There are not gear gaps in WvW, unless you believe the minor percent people get off Ascended some how matters. I have no Ascended, and I beat those geared in it on a regular basis. I’ve leveled 6 toons from 1-80 in WvW doing zero PvE, and I have never felt like there was a gear gap, even when I was wearing greens. Did you know that 1-80 doing camps in WvW gives you enough Karma for 6-8 pieces of Exotic gear you get from Orr merchants.

Second; Are you honestly trying to say sPvP players are skilled, and WvW players are not? I hope not, it will only destroy your stance before it even begins.

Third; Yes, I’ve fought them in sPvP, learn to dodge those traps. You know how to dodge right? There is no excuse crying about the Ranger, none. If you are having issues with traps, slot Sigil of Purity, it helps. I’ll go back into sPvP when it isn’t boring, and they create 5v5s. and/or 10v10s where you have to fight within a well coordinated group, rather than protect control points, with boring bunker vs bunker fighting.

Fourth; If you believe WvW players only fight NPCs, you are not worth talking to.

Use a better argument, not an old one that means absolutely squat. Use what ever excuse you want, it still doesn’t excuse the fact that I have never lost to a Ranger, or Engineer, and have only lost three fights to a Necromancer with 6 Exotic geared level 80s, that leveled solely in WvW. Everyone on my server, and my opponents know I run solo 95% of the time, and it isn’t uncommon for me to log in, and have a dozen offers for 1v1.

I’m sick and tired of the anti-Rangers making threads like this. It is absurd considering the issues behind the class.

I’m willing to be proven wrong though. I accept any 1v1 offered to me. Just message me in game.

Had 3k health left and all on CD because I stomped the other 2 rangers tagged along with the one that killed me.
Rangers need a buff and yes this includes experiences in tPvP too.

But hey, hey.
If you guys don’t want to be buffed to the level of every other class, I’m fine with that.
The more you say you’re fine the less guilty I feel when I have 15k health left and you’re lying horizontal.
I’d just like to feel like I somewhat earned the Glory/Badges I got, though I’m ok with some freebies too.

also i just want to mention WvW can not be a mesurement of skill. Just for the fact that you are not fighting all LvL 80’s (alot of them are lower lvled and trying to level to 80 so they run around looking for events) so no, not everyone is in exotices and karma exotics do not have the best stats anyways for WvW…rangers really need spicific stats to make weapons work, they are not like other classes where you can mix stats and still be efficent with any of your weapons.

So I posit a second reason that people do poorly on ranger is because they’ve built in habits that don’t apply when you play ranger. Like, for me, I’m struggling with elementalist, thief, and I almost fall asleep playing warrior.

I think only warriors dwarf rangers in terms of poor PvP. Unsupported warriors in WvW, for example, are generally a free kill. But right after them is ranger. I suspect this is for two reasons:

A) Lots of new players pick warrior and take him into WvW with PvE specs

B) Lots of new players pick ranger and having nothing mapped out for them (strife025 comes to mind for warriors), they tend to just experiment with trial and error and their first PvE mistake is to choose bows. SB and LB just are not as good in PvE as sword/warhorn and axe/axe. You can debate the numbers with me but when you consider the utility and that the faster you kill a boss in PvE the more likely the whole team is to survive, then it because essential to dodge accurately and play melee.

I just don’t think this has been mapped out for folks and us—the people that have seen the bright spots in the profession and exploited them to our advantage—just haven’t been vocal enough about builds.

Only recently, has the ranger community itself started to re-vitalize by refining gears and sharing tactics. With time, we will grow into a mighty foe.

As for your “uberness”, claiming to be pro, without evidence, is like claiming to own a ferrari without showing it to anyone. Post vid, then claim to be pro. If not, your skill is subject to your own ego. And most people aren’t sincere enough to say that they are about average.

I think it’s funny that people make all these claims about ranger but never show any proof. But the moment I try to apply logic and math to this profession, I get shot down.

And for everyone else: we’re not claiming all of the professions are exactly balanced equally such that every possible build has a chance versus every other build when played optimally. That’s just not true! Of course some professions have more potential for DPS than others given a set of boundary conditions. This much is obvious.

Rather, what I’m saying, and I don’t want to put words in anyone’s mouth, but I really believe that the DIFFERENCE between professions is smaller than mainstream thought as of March 13, 2013, makes it out to be.

I know for a fact there is more of a skill gap between average players and good players of ANY profession than there is from the POTENTIAL for damage from ranger when compared to, say, warrior.

The fact is, you’re more likely to notice less DPS coming out of a newer/mediocre player than the difference in DPS between a skilled warrior and a skilled ranger.

I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen a glass canon Ranger. I do love the old argument used in every MMO though, that you continue to use here; (You must fight baddies, while I fight the best players in the world). Quit using that argument, it only discredits anything you ever have to say. Sure, I fight baddies, just like I fight good players.

I know for a fact there is more of a skill gap between average players and good players of ANY profession than there is from the POTENTIAL for damage from ranger when compared to, say, warrior.

The fact is, you’re more likely to notice less DPS coming out of a newer/mediocre player than the difference in DPS between a skilled warrior and a skilled ranger.

That’s just it, Xsorus has proven to be good with the Ranger, with videos. He then jumped on a Thief, and showed he could do ten times better on another class, and you guys laugh it off, and make excuses.

sPvP is for the people who can’t be bothered to level, or can’t handle the full damage of WvW. There is nothing like fighting harder hitting players under the damage of siege, and still surviving.

If I can survive a Thieves burst in Glass Canon build, that does easily 50% more than they do in sPvP, while dodging cat shots, and treb shots, what makes you think a Ranger could ever kill me in sPvP?

I’ve never lost a single fight with a Ranger, nor an Engineer. I’ve only lost three fights against Necromancers. You see, I attend fight clubs virtually every other day, and spend hours at fight clubs on weekends.

Sir, may i remind you that in WvW, most glass cannon rangers are half dead when you encounter them?! Not to mention the fact that most rangers are actually playing the class quite horribly. Okay…anecdotal evidence doesn’t fly in the court of law, friend. Let me try to explain why.

A lot of thieves have it super easy in a large zerg because they can stealth and run away if they have to or just stealth to lose targets. No one, in a big battle, is going to explicitly target the assassin coming into and out of existence. That’s just a waste of time—and that’s the best thing thieves do for the team. They waste the opponent’s time.

Every profession has a role. You should open your eyes to things ranger can do well…I mean, by your logic, every profession needs to be able to kill 20+ players at once to be “balanced”. That doesn’t sound like a fun game to me, bro.

If I thought you could duplicate what a Thief, or Mesmer could do against many opponents, or duplicate a four man group with a Ranger in it killing 20-40 players that Warriors, Guardians, Elementalist, and Thieves have been able to do, I probably would. But I know you cant.

I would love to see you run with a four man Ranger group, and actually show decent wins comparable to the other classes.

I just don’t see Engineers anymore. This last week while waiting for the WvW patch, and due to boredom I leveled my wifes Necromancer from 52-80 in WvW where I’ve leveled all my toons, and it took me two days to get to 80.

From Sunday to today I’ve done nothing but Zerg vs Zerg play since I’m almost always solo or in small groups on all my other toons. In that amount of time I’ve earned 631 Badges of Honor, and since she had zero kills in PvP, I got 2008 kills, with 27 deaths. I HATE zerg vs zerg fighting, but was impressed.

Today I ran around with two Mesmers, and I won’t explain what we did because it needs to be nerfed, and HOLY MOTHER OF GOD this particular strategy is unreal, and should be nerfed.

I’ve tried to run solo, but it’s really hard as a Necro in comparison to the Ranger, Thief, or my Mesmer.

That said, the Necromancer has a large number of things that just feel buggy. They have one utility that makes them the most important member of a group, but not because the Necromancer is a good class, but because the mechanics behind it are overpowered. Remove that one ability, and I feel the Necromancer is pretty lackluster in group play. They excel in Zerg on Zerg fights though, so they have something to fall back on if nothing else.

I want to level my Necro, just to do a Minion mancer rofl..I don’t see any videos of them.

I tried minions but every time I entered the water to do the center island, I’d lose my Flesh Golem, and my other Elites Lich Form, or Plague Form destroys my minions, creating a major issue. I actually had to run Hounds of Balthazar.

Not long ago, I met a very good bunker engineer with dual pistol and confusion traits (they are even better than ranger underwater!). It could be another fotm as I check their forum and the build turns out to be quite popular among them.

They can “pwn” people, sure. But people more experienced than me have told me it’s much harder to do than on other classes . . . and they are generally not able to match the same effectiveness.

On one hand? I love my ranger. I found it remarkably easy to fly solo in PvE play, and have usually been an asset to any group I’ve joined up on for dungeons.

On the other? I spent 50% of a keep defense rallying over and over and not seeming to have any good effectiveness in stopping a zerg. I find it difficult to kill anything, though simple enough to run and survive an engagement I’m not ready for.

We might need a buff, I’m just leery of what might get done.

I know players in WvW you couldn’t beat if they fought you 1000 times. In fact, you and I both are on Anvil Rock, the server with the most sPvP, and tPvP players, yet none of your sPvP players could kill PAXA on a good day, and PAXA couldn’t beat some of the better WvW teams like AD, NEWL, and so on. And get this, not even AD is the best, so if your sPvP teams couldn’t beat a mediocre WvW team like PAXA, how in the hell do you believe you stand a chance with some of the best WvW teams out there?

That alone proves you’re talking out of your rear when it comes to who is best, and who isn’t. I’m sorry, but sPvP does not have “the best” players, and neither does WvW. Both have good, and bad, but there is no way to compare the both beyond things we can witness, like I’ve never seen a good sPvP team, ever beat a good WvW team in open field combat.

Such a flawed comment that I see far too often.

Disclaimer: I don’t know if Rangers are strong, weak or average. In WvW, in my hands, they are a little above average….but I am only an average player. My twitch is slow and my targetting is horrible.

I have watched a lot of videos and have seen some amazing displays by some very talented players. Does that mean Rangers are strong ? Maybe. Maybe not. I would strongly suggest that the people that have been putting out the videos would kick buttocks on any class. I also bet they could go out in WvW without armor and win their fair share of fights.

So just because some very good players can succeed with Rangers doesn’t prove they are a strong class…….and just because some bad players can’t succeed with Rangers doesnt prove they are a bad class.

That would be interesting to fight a WvW team. Too bad my team seems to be dead. Also, most good sPvP teams don’t play WvW that I know of. Sadly, since we are on same server we cannot fight in WvW. I’d be happy to duel you a sPvP server though.
