What's the point of entangling roots?
Sounds like he destroyed the roots after going into stealth. You should have stacked more control (or AoE) skills on him. For instance; use Entangle, then use a pet like the snow leopard to add chill, or put down a trap at your location. The point of the skill is to escape when you are being attacked by multiple foes, to get some breathing room so you can heal and get some distance, or to simply deal AoE damage.

So much of an “ultimate”, crap useless skill.
Why do everyone has awesome ultimates but we get kitten.
If you know how to use the spirit elite is arguably the best elite in the game. (Aside from moa) >.>

Spirit of Nature = Support
Rampage As One = Damage
Entangle = Control
What ells do you need?

I’m complaining because it’s too easy to break the root and it’s an ultimate skill.
I get crippled and stunlocked via normal skills for longer than I can immobilize someone with these roots, they are useless for an ultimate.
It’s not an “Ultimate” skill. Is it so hard to read the description where it says “Elite” skill? Sheesh. If you ever played GW1, an Elite skill is a skill that’s very different, has a long CD and has very specific uses. It’s not a OMGWTFkittenBBQ one shot skill.

I usually hated entangle, but it serves its purpose.
If the person in question does not have an escape, this will root them until the vines are down, or after 20s. While they are being held, they CANNOT MOVE, NOT EVEN TO FACE A NEW DIRECTION. With a shortbow equiped, use this to your advantage!!
It alos has a DoT effect, and hits as many people in its radius as possible.
That’s pretty effing elite.
It’s pretty cool in WvW for assaulting towers and keeps.
Entangle the guy up top shooting down, then watch him cry as he can’t move as everyone zergs him.
can only talk PvE here,
it’s epic in PvE.. run into some mobs. Place it well, then run a bit back and drop down your barrage on the mobs while they’re still immobilzed and already damaging from your entangling roots. Does a lot of damage and gives a lot of control too.
I like it a lot.
He could have used a variety of moves to dodge one tick of the roots and walk out of them, or used condition removal, or possibly even aegis.
Rangers have probably the best elites in game, close to mesmer. You clearly play only hot-joins at rank 5 atm. Nothing to discuss here.
But rangers have the absolute worse Signets ):
Sea of Sorrows
are you serious…. roots are amazing you are most likely doing it wrong
@samfisher
I disagree.
The passive effects of the signets are great, and when traited, the active effects from signet of stone is slightly overpowered imho. Curing your team of conditions is amazing, the increased damage is not very great, as it only affects one attack, but still, when timed right, it can be amazing, as both you and your pet enter a burst dps mode.
Entangling roots is good for hitting large groups of enemies in PvP, especially if lots of things are going on and the enemies don’t realize they’ve been rooted. Rooting a person in 1v1 is going to be less useful because they’ll easily break the roots and move on.
Of course occasionally you get the guy who doesn’t know he can attack the roots. I fought a warrior once in a 1v1 game and rooted him, then stood back and plugged him with my shortbow while he shouted “SHAKE IT OFF!” over and over. It was pretty funny.

Oh you mean like the Thief skill “Dagger Storm”
Spin around, reflecting projectiles and throwing daggers that cripple and bleed nearby foes. You can move while spinning.
Does extremely high damage
Cripples and Bleeds
Reflects any Projectile
Immune to any CC
Yeah, i see how that works.
Hrm
So its a 20 second root, likely will root most people for about 10 seconds give or take.
Has an enormous area of effect (600 radius. Most AOES i see from classes are in the 200-300 range).
Bleeds every second they are in it (not bad for condition rangers)
I think its too easy to negate but tahts about it.
I do notice that out on the field (WvW), most players are not substantially rooted in the least, but I nearly always have this skill slotted because SoN has such a crappy range.
I have found Entangle to be the most use when defending or attacking a keep, especially in conjunction with traps. I like to set traps, wait for the enemy trigger them and slam entangle. Entangle also makes a huge difference when I need just 2 seconds to get into a keep door or get me just a few feet closer to a target who is being a big baby and running away.
As stated before, it’s a CC skill. You just need to utilize it properly.
Using Entangle in normal story/quest mode makes a HUGE impact on gameplay, as NPCs or not-real-life-players end up rooted substantially longer.
Roots is a survival skill …
It works very well actually, often switch to it in PVE and WvW
He could have used a variety of moves to dodge one tick of the roots and walk out of them, or used condition removal, or possibly even aegis.
This.
You don’t have to destroy the vines, you can dodge roll etc out of them. That is probably what the thief did.
Its good to get a bit of breathing space, and against multiple foes as mentioned. Its saved my life a lot so I think its pretty good on the whole. BTW I think the thief elite “thieves guild” is stronger than the whirling one. Mesmer time warp and Moa are also grand.
Entangle is very useful during dungeon crawls. Especially in CM, when you get mobbed by 10 guys at a time -_-. Activate that, then go right into barrage with your long bow.

I could swear I´ve interrupted that elite more than once with shortbow#5…

Moas useless, i have yet to be kittened over by the moa skill…. ever… even in tournies… Now that spirit skill is totally BA, aoe rez and full condition removal? What he does it again when he dies? AND he heals the entire area for ~500 health a second? The kitten would i take anything else!?!?
@OP I personally thought entangle was pretty baller… Then again, i think the roots need to become walls, so enemies can’t walk through them if for what ever reason the immob gets cured or any of that nonsense.
As their mother, I have to grant them their wish. – Forever Fyonna
OP, you are correct, this Elite skill is very poor for the most part in sPvP. (As other’s have stated, it’s excellent in PvE)
It’s a very hit or miss, amazing or terrible skill. Either you get someone who doesn’t know what it is, and they stand there swinging away like idiots for 20 seconds trying to reach you, or you get someone who within a blink of an eye is out of them. There rarely seems to be anything in-between.
They are too easily escape-able for an Elite that states they have to be destroyed first. Even on my Ranger, I’ve just simply walked out of them after getting trapped – did not destroy them or use any skills to get me out – just walked…
I’ve stopped using it in sPvP as it’s simply too unreliable, however I do still use it in PvE for dungeons that have large groups of melee.
Is the walking/running/dodge escape issue a bug? I like this skill and try to incorporate it alot. However, sometimes it does misfire and doesn’t do anything apparently. In dungeons when it does trap a boss/mob they seem to do so much damage it kills the roots real quick O.O Is this true? Is the speed at which someone in PvP or WvW clears them because they destroyed the roots quick? I’d love this skill if it was guaranteed effectiveness
Should file bug reports if they just walk out of it, that’s not what the description says.
