hi i m new to ranger and i m very much interested in duel.i know some build with sword/dagger and shortbow r really powerful in 1v1.but i m a fan of longbow and GS.is that possible to use these 2 weapons in duel?if so can some 1 share a build here and teach me how to fight with that choice of slots skills . much appreciated !

Longbow / Greatsword requires better positioning and more skill, but it works well in 1v1s if you get good. Compared to Sword/Dagger + Shortbow you don’t have as much free survivability. Try 6-2-0-6-0 or 6-2-6-0-0 to start off with, air + fire on bow and energy + intelligence on greatsword. See how it suits you to start with, I would make a video but I’ve been away from my pc for 5 weeks and I need to remember how to use my keyboard heh.

Also check out the NA PvP ranger Eurantien, he often lurks here but he is the only ranger with actual proof of his ability in that build rather than the rest of the people who spew kitten at you on the forums.

This is what i use in WvW and it works pretty fine. Its all about hitting those knockbacks and hunter shots.

Anticipating the new longbow ranger meta I played Skullface’s build for quite some time and one thing that really ticked me off is how unreliable the block can be at times.

The counterattack has a really long aftercast that leaves you rooted for like 1 second, if the enemy has stability or dodges it you are pretty much guaranteed to take his next hit, not to mention teamfights where the root is a death sentence.

I am tempted to play sword/dagger instead of greatsword just because of team fights and the ever so frequent 1v1’s with warriors.

Maul + moment of clarity can be devastating though, power rangers are still rare so even some experienced players won’t see that coming, if you time your pet switch right after hilt bash your pet will add his crippling leap to your maul and the combination of those 2 attacks hits for more than 9k even on soldier amulet warriors.

There are a few matchups that you just can’t win without maul, like celestial amulet elementalists and engineers, but there are also some other matchups that would be much easier with sword/dagger. (I’m looking at you hambow)

If you want lb/gs learn to embrace mediocrity.

I beg to differ, Ranger has had it’s ups and downs but now that Warrior is in a more balanced position Ranger can pretty much 1v1 anyone pretty successfully. I struggle with two things on my Ranger at the moment. Condition Mesmers are a struggle for me, despite my condition cleanse they still keep up good pressure. I’d say at the moment it’s a 50/50 win rate but I’m sure as I improve that will too.

The second thing is a good S/D thief. The fight will go on literally for ever until one of us makes a mistake or I successfully get an entangle on them. This depends on the thief and their play style however, I win a good 80% of these fights but particular thieves I cannot bring myself to beat yet (Sizer gokitten).

My comment was from spvp perspective. Fighting in wvw is much easier for anyone since you aren’t pressured into situations and the ability to free roam. Also in wvw you have a lot of people that aren’t using correct builds. The ranger in spvp is in a deep hole compared to the other classes of 1v1 potential. Play around the top 200 in ranked teams or soloQ then get back to me on how the ranger is doing compared to other classes.

I didn’t comment to make ranger seem like its trash but it needs a lot of rework so it can actually become viable pick again in spvp. Even in pve and wvw they are pretty lackluster compared to the other choices.

I was running longbow / gs power build in pvp the other day and just owning people. Well mostly owning people. No one seams to b expecting the build and are just dumb founded by it. Attacking into gs 4 and not dodging gs 5

BM regen/condi, embrace it.

The only problem I ever had was with thieves that were stealth spamming/condi removal in wvw. According to all other rangers, I just need to l2p against them. Guess so. Builds like that which can stealth and run off will always be a problem.

You are going to have a hard time with lb/gs in duel servers. Your best pet would probably be something like 0/x/0/0/6 with some god tier pet micro managing.
