For those who have the scrolls and tomes, you could make a level 1 and, after the tutorial, level a character to level 80 in a matter of a minute or so of clicking.

So, for those of you who plan on playing revenant on day 1, and have the resources, will you stick to level 1 and do the patient leveling up, or will you go straight to level 80?

It’s also quite possible revs have a new fast track leveling area for them only.

It would be very weird to introduce a new prof and expect people to do something that involves no lore like use tomes.

No tomes, no boosts or transferred items, complete run through the personal story, Living world then expansion. Though probably not till the main missions of the expansion are completed on my main .

It’s a brand spanking new class; I’m not even going to use one of my birthday scrolls on the first one I make. Level by level, it’ll give me time to grow accustomed to the class.

(If I eventually make a second, it’d be months later, at least, and I’d know the class well enough that I could skip to 20. If I wanted to. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t.)

Considering how terrible the NPE is im going to be lvling using tomes and scrolls as much as possible. Unfortunately i dont have that many tomes so i will probably only get to about lvl 40.

You can learn a class fine at lvl 80. You just have to actually read and try out the skills. :P

I’m doing the same as Spoj. Straight to 80 and bypassing the horrible cluster___k that is the NPE. I have enough right now to get it to lvl 60. By the time the expansion drops, I’ll have enough to get it to 80.

Anyone know how much gold it takes to buy all the traits?

I’m torn. If I go the slow way I won’t be able to use him/her to explore the new region… well, unless it has level 1 areas, heh

On the other hand, if I make a level 80, then I won’t have the joy of exploring the new class.

I could alternate between one of my current classes and the 1, I suppose.

Hm, side note, that’s interesting, if this is an entire new region IE ascalon, Kryta, etc, might it actually have low to high level zones? Obviously we don’t know, but it could offer us the chance of leveling new characters in the entire area.

Otherwise, separating action will have to be the way to go.

Then again, it will also let me explore my specializations of my other classes and still level up my revenant.

And since the only personal story I havent done is one of the sylvari ones, I suppose I can make a sylvari revenant. Let me kill a couple of birds with one stone there.

Bah. There’s time to learn that after level 80. I wouldn’t be oppose to leveling it normally, if I could level it like I leveled my other toons… Oh wait, I level’d 6 of my 8 toons though crafting then learned to play them at level 80 too… and even if I did want to level it the way I level’d my first one, I can’t… So I guess I am doing the normal-for-me way.

I think for people that are bad at the game sure, but that’s not really true. For PvP my buddies asked me to play necro so I created one for the first time and within around 3 hours I knew most/all of the rotations simply because the situational knowledge is already there. If you know the other classes learning a new one wont be a super struggle, although it will take a bit more longer with Revanant as no one has played one until the patch hits.

Probably a compromise… use one of my many level 20 tomes, and then more to get around 40 or 50. After that maybe the normal way and doing the PS… but to echo another poster, yeah, I have all classes at 80 that mostly levelled the hard way. I had a lot of fun exploring the world the first time around but just can’t really do it again.

It’s not that you won’t be able to play as well, it’s that you won’t understand the class as well.

Your understanding of a mesmer is entirely different before your traits and utilities come in, and you’re often going to make unusual skill and weapon choices in the process of leveling.

If you jump to 80, there’s skills you never learn (partially becauase you never need to), which is fine for performance, but your in-depth understanding suffers.

I know 80s who have very little idea what half hteir utilities and 2/3 of their traits do because they powerleveled and never needed to use them. This doesn’t hurt their performance, the known good rotations and skills are known, but it’s still to me a loss, especially when part of the joy is learning the new class.

I’ll probably use tomes till about 40-50. I don’t find there is much learning for me to do before those levels anymore. I will surely try all weapons and skill/trait/build combos (even sub-optimal ones, oh the horror) because I enjoy that sort of thing.

If you jump to 80, there’s skills you never learn (partially becauase you never need to), which is fine for performance, but your in-depth understanding suffers.

I know 80s who have very little idea what half hteir utilities and 2/3 of their traits do because they powerleveled and never needed to use them.

“Regular” leveling doesn’t make anyone “need” to learn all their class skills/trait combos. Powerleveling doesn’t make anyone unable to learn what all those skills and traits do.

“I know 80s who have very little idea what half their utilities and 2/3 of their traits do because they are lazy/don’t care/didn’t bother to learn” would be more accurate.

We don’t know yet of course, but I wouldn’t be surprised if new characters of this class are going to already have some kind of accelerated or different leveling to them. Perhaps at least a lengthier “private” leveling experience before entering the main world- similar to what WoW did with WotLK.

For anyone that isn’t aware, in that expansion Blizzard gave the new class a headstart by giving them a lengthy (and frankly awesome) personal story type experience, along with a number of perks. By the time you entered the main game world you were somewhere around 3/4 of the way to endgame content. (Not just levels, but several other grinds that you got alternatives to- WoW is way more grindy than GW2.)

The catch was you couldn’t just be a new player to skip over that stuff. You needed to have a class of a certain level first in order to create one of those characters, and you were limited in how many you could make.

Personally I found that the best introduction of a new class to an MMO I’ve yet experienced. I’m glad GW2 is definitively not a WoW clone, but that’s one area where I wouldn’t mind seeing a little imitation.

On a business side it makes sense too, because it would give an even bigger incentive to existing players to buy that extra slot right away.
