Hey guys, posted this vid(which I’ve got more vids I needa upload of said rev smacking me up with sword /hammer) to go along with a few questions I had..

  • What build were they running?
  • What would you have done differently?
  • How should a rev approach a chronomancer?
  • How should a chronomancer approach a rev?
  • What is a sample ideal Rev pvp build?

Thanks for any info provided, and special thanks to my opponent who helped me learn what to expect when facing a revenant!

He was running Hammer/sword+sword with Glint and Shiro. He was using the retribution, devastation and herald traitlines.

As far as I can tell, this was probably his build: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vlAQNAscin3gWNSuQrJRboBlsP0fS4I6QJ4EdrkFNFSdG74HtBIBNwugJMiA-TpQOAB9WGAg9HAA

Most other people were using something along the lines of: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vlAQNAsemn3guNSuQ7JRboZlsP0rS4IaVJ4EdskFNFidMppNtBYBNwugJshA-TpgSABAs/ArlBAA

For most of BWE2, I was mostly running: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vlAQNAsein3gWNSuQrJRboBlsP0fS4I6QJ4EdrklZlhNmb2RNgEewe6r3G-TpgSABAs/ArlBAA

I must admit that I only really know the basics of chronomancer but I’ll give the other questions a go.

I would definitely not have used unrelenting assault (the teleport-evade thing with the sword) while you had all your illusions up. When you ran behind that wall, if he had used phase traversal and then burst of strength (20 vuln) with unrelenting assault or auto-attacked with impossible odds, he could have done some serious damage.

I would also not have used the hammer so much at close range. He could have avoided a lot of damage by keeping by keeping a larger range (easy with Shiro) when using hammer and not using hammer 5 (big floating hammer) so often on you. Using hammer 5 on such a mobile target is just a waste of precious energy. It’d would have been a lot better to stay back and spam coalescence of ruin (hammer 2).

He also seemed to use infuse light about 2-3 seconds too late, especially when you used blurred frenzy. It’s obviously it’s impossible to predict every move your opponent makes in time but there were a few times he could easily have had the upper hand if he’d used those blocks and invulnerabilities in time.

What I cannot stress enough if you are a hammer revenant is that you must keep a large distance between you. Hammer 4 (projectile absorb) is quite useless in close combat yet your opponent used this and hammer 2 at very close range quite a few times.

Lastly, he didn’t seem to have a great command of his available skills (though I suppose it’s understandable considering how little time we got to play with them). I didn’t see any jade winds, impossible odds or bursts of strength. I think I saw one phase traversal but he was right next to you and you were using blurred frenzy so it was a bit of a waste.

All a chronomancer really needs to do with a revenant is stay in a reasonable proximity with their illusions and use as many conditions as possible. A hell of a lot of revenants seem to rely heavily on unrelenting assault (god knows why) so having even one illusion near you will mitigate the damage significantly.

Ultimately, this is probably not what you should expect when facing a revenant. A lot of revenants will be running with invocation which gives basic condition removal (something your opponent had absolutely none of outside of riposting shadows) and 40% critical hit chance from fury (as opposed to 20%). Then there’s Mallyx. Some people will be running this legend and it’ll be a lot harder to use conditions against them. In this event, you’ll want as much CC as possible as the Mallyx legend has no stunbreaks outside of invocation and it’s reasonably unlikely that they’ll be using any of the stability traits.

Feel free to disagree with any of this. Again, I have a very basic knowledge of chronomancer and I don’t use my mesmer every often.

What Yak said +:

He got outrotated on weaponswaps. Most of the times when you stood in wells, he was with Swords (not using Sword OH #5 to drag you out of wells) while if he had Hammer and maintained some range, that wouldn’t be so pretty.

And Sword #3 gets heavily countered by multiple targets like Illusions/Phants/Minions. That’s why I suggested moving it’s damage portion rather than increasing the cooldown -.- .
