“Dragonhunter” was pretty terrible taming, considering it doesn’t look like skills for hunting dragons, and just … really? That’s the best we could come up with? Dragonhunter as opposed to things like “Seraphim” or “Adjudicator” or “Justicar” or “Exemplar” or “Paladin” or even something really high concept, “Crusader”?

(that was a joke, by the way. kind of)

The possibility of my elite profession being “Daredevil” doesn’t give me much hope, either. It’s lackluster, over-used, and frankly tells me nothing about what it will bring — and what it does imply will likely be anything but!

I get that we don’t want to call it a “Ninja” or act like we ever liked Cantha or anything, but we don’t need a far-eastern name for “some jerk with a staff.” Even the old standby of “Rogue” or “Brigand” or “Marauder” could work, albeit the latter doesn’t seem very … staff-wielding.

Heck, “Dilettante” is more befitting and could help Thief break into an almost ‘refined’ aesthetic (seeing as apparently no one on Tyria knows how to pick locks).

So before the expansion goes live or we’re revealed, can we please please please get a name change (assuming it is, indeed, “Daredevil”)? There have been dozens upon dozens of suggestions from players and fans of the profession for months now, and many of them are quite good.

As it stands, “Daredevil” makes me think of the third most dangerous profession in fantasy worlds (the second is Blacksmith’s Apprentice).

Honestly… The name? Who really cares about that? Who’s going to see it aside of yourself? The logo displayed next to your character will still show you’re a Thief, not a ‘Daredevil’. Heck, we’re not even sure if that’ll be the name (though the datamines do seem to incline it).

If you want to worry or whine about something, wait until the reveal and then start the cries for change.
For all you know it could be a hoax and we get a mace/blackjack idea with a Pickpocket or Burglar for a name, or a Scepter (or Focus) and we get called something like a Nightbade. Heck, maybe WE become the ‘Forge’ and get the kitten hammer. Engi and thief are both Medium armored classes. It was in the Trailer and there’s datamines! It MUST be true!

Just really don’t get the point inall these topics about things that aren’t confirmed in any way or whatsoever yet.
Sorry for the rant mate, I’m just getting really tired with these useless topics taking up front page space from topics that are actually of value to te Thief as is and will (possible) be.

God, this shows me, how uncreative the community is (nothing against you personally!!) , how should be the Devs under the face of this creativity blast from us be there only better..

There exist ways to give this Class names, that are short, that are catchy, which do fit to a theme of an martial artist that wields a Staff, that is a term with that players can identify themself with and that are unique and nowhere to be found in other MMORPGs before, without having to give it a classical name..

I can think of easily of 5 names, that would work:

1) The Ascetic, which would be some kind of martial artistical Staff wielding Monk, without the need of calling it Monk to prevent confusions… simply a Thief which atones for his sins and chose to follow the Path of the Empty Palm instead, using Mediations to become able to perform theuir supernatural looking martial arts to gte this way in harmony with themself.

2) The Skirmisher, a much better fitting unique sounding one word class name, that actually represents alot better the gameplay of what a Daredevil could ever stand for and would be the best alternative design option over the Ascetic, if the Class should be not looking as if the Thief went the path of becoming more of a monkish martial artist, but rather stays under the thief and works more like a roguish cunning and reckless martial artist instead, that is not based on meditations, but instead rather on raw physicals simply

3) The Brawler ..a term which already exists in Guild Wars 2
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Superior_Rune_of_the_Brawler
So why not make out of it a martial artistical Elite Specialization for the Thief.
Brawler would be just a different working synonym for Skirmisher, one, who goes recklessly into any fights, using physical prowess on first hand, beign very good and specialized at melee combat and holding your place, whats exactly somethign the thief massively lacks in …

4) The Bandit, another term, that already exists in Guild Wars 2, and could easily be used to turn it into an Elite Specialization, somethign that would work as simple upgrade of the theif, that would be more defensive and lesser based on stealth and therefore more specialized on stealing, disarming, boon stripping, skill removal and such things and controling foes via stuns and launches.
a good term, that could be used, instead of using the classical “Rogue”, (I like personally Rogue more, but thats just my opinion xD and bandit is simply a very rarely used synonym for Rogue in MMOs)

5) The Dervish
It would be an easy task to let Dervish return as staff whirling Combat Dancers (eh, Capoeira anyone?? oO).. staff already also provides a Scythe Skin.. I can easily see the Dervish as a staff wielding Elite Specialization of the thief that uses the staff for a fast rotating kind of reckless aoe melee combat style that is alot about alos retaliation and defensive boons like protection, stability, resistance and regeneration, while also stripping off boons of foes or sacrificing own boons to be able to perform a special form of martial arts, so called “Mystic Arts” as new unique type of Utility Skills and this one would bring back even nostalgia back to the game. What would you guys thinkl ,how many people would absolutely freak out, if the Dervish would return to GW2 as Thief Elite-Specialization, when you could combine that with a Scythe Staff skin and the dervish looking outfit???, especialyl when it would use as utility skilsl something special as like mystic Arts as the thief’s unique form of physical skills … while the Steal mechanic symple gets turned into “Mysticism” with that the thief could consume his boons to be able to perform for some time secret Forbidden Arts, that are some kind of devastating martial attacks for that you need to sacrifice your boons to perform them, for that you need to sacrifice more than just only 1 boon, like in the case of weaker Mystic Arts.

All of those are more boring than Daredevil. If people would stop thinking of the word in terms of stuntmen and marvel comic heroes, it’s an interesting name, really. In a world of dragons, Knights, wizards and other outlandish fantasy, you have quick adventurous daredevils still up to the task and getting a thrill of using their quick wits and Bo-staff skills to avoid dangerous situations and get into the thicket of adventure.

Better than being some other played out fantasy if you ask me…

Daredevil is so interesting as a term, like a farting flea..sorry, but I was absolutely not thinking at all about stuntmen or the stupid marvel hero about which I have no associations with at all.
Its also nothing at all, with that I would associate any real martial artitic moves with.
With Daredevil I only associate one thing with – reckless fighting

There are other synonyms for Daredevil, that would sound even much better like:

  • Swashbuckler or
  • Gambler

while giving the class even a complete new unique touch that I’d like to see with a Thief as Elite-Specialization (but they sadly don’t suit to the Staff Weapon, would be more something for the Focus in case of the Gambler and Offhand Sword in case of the Swashbuckler, so maybe somethin for the next E-Spec xD)

http://atma.lost-edens.com/albums/userpics/10002/Fanart%20ff10%20Rikku%20Gambler.jpg

I think the absolute most awesome thing that could be made with the staff wielding thief could be my proposed number 5.
The Dervish fits soo good into this role and gameplay design and it is absolutely a much better and unique term, than Daredevil will ever be ….

PS: but I guess you haven’t played GW1 at all …

Admittedly, I would’ve preferred Vagabond, but it’s not like I’m gonna lose sleep over this.

Let’s dream up some alternatives and crack open a few splatbooks ….

Vagabond, Wanderer, Second-story Man, Delver, Explorer, Trickster, Footpad, Vigilante, Ravager (because lol warrior), Disciple, Scourge, Harrier, Blackguard, Mountebank …

All this and not even a quarter through the list of all prestige classes. And look! All of the ones listed could well be “high concept” for what Thief may soon become (but which we know little about), and all of them embody a different vision and meaning while holding in line with the free spirit and ne’er-do-well attitude espoused of the class.

All I’m asking for is something both creative and evocative of what it is, you know?

Let’s look at others:

  • Chronomancer: literally “diviner of time.” That’s the entire spec right there. In one word.
  • Reaper: you’re either thinking of the spirit that comes to take your dying soul or someone felling crops. Either way, you’re doomed.
  • Dragonhunter: a “hunter of dragons,” or apparently someone who played the story, fought the Shatterer, smote Jormag, survived Teq, etc.
  • Tempest: well, at least our reaction to it has qualified as a “storm” or “violent tumult of commotion” ….
  • Herald: “a messenger or harbinger of portents,” which sums of the Revenant’s style quite nicely.
  • Berserker: “one who fights in a frenzy” seems to describe the new spec well, too.

And now:

  • Daredevil: as an adjective, “recklessly bold or adventurous.” This is the entire opposite of Thief and the style it presents. I mean, recklessness and stealth don’t really work together.

Who says the elite spec will be reliant on stealth? To me, Dare Devil implies that it’s going to be more about agility, evades, and risky payoffs than the tired stealth tactics. I’m really quite intrigued at what we might be getting.

Let’s see what the elite spec brings first, okay? We don’t even know with absolute certainty that it is going to be Dare Devil, despite its likeliness.

I think that’s the point. I would expect a lot of synergy with the revealed side of stealth rather than the invisibility of it.

Consider Revealed Training.
Now have traits for +200 toughness and healing, bonus damage, condition cleansing, endurance regen, steal now acts as a form of rampage utility, etc.

There’s nothing wrong with playing outside of the stealth box. The name is fine (again, I hope it’s one word and not two, as two is not grammatically correct for the context/it’s smoother to pronounce). I know people want their bad-kittenin-y shadow-loving vampire-sparkly nonsense, but specializations are supposed to change the style of the class dramatically. They’ve succeeded largely at doing this, albeit with some implementation failures (Dragonhunter and tempest come to mind), and the concern should lie in those implementations, not the name.

Because honestly, the name means absolutely nothing because it’s the same thing as a trait line. Would you really care if they replaced all trait line names with numbers? It changes nothing about your character’s aesthetic unless it actually changes the character’s aesthetic, such as shroud.

Welcoming new styles of play is a good thing. Just buffing what the thief is already designed around doesn’t help the thief; it just puts our pigeon-holed status somewhere else/requires the expansion to play if it’s good/better than current options. Use the BWE and subsequent feedback opportunities to talk about the core specialization problems in conjunction with the BWE class problems. Given enough response about the limitations of the base class, it’ll at least raise awareness for future changes.

None of the names I see here really fall into acrobat/gymnast trope which is in my opinion the trope the daredevil name is trying to fall in. Most of the names here are within the superset rogue but fall short of being placed in the acrobat trope. Which probably why they went with daredevil it is the non cliche/exciting way to refer to an acrobat/trapeze artist/tight rope walker.

There’s no way to know just yet if the name will fit or not. The only thing we know about the E.spec is that it has a staff and we can only speculate that it is based on acrobatic stunts and the sort. We have no idea about the heal, utilities, elite, or updated mechanic, so it is quite folly to be complaining about the name just yet.

Besides, a lot of the names people keep bringing up are poor choices with the weapon being a staff (though there were some interesting ones). Just hold tight and see what happens Friday.
