Think deep. Mobility is not only thief’s skill. Warrior, mesmer(portal entre is soooo OP) , and Elimentalist are have also good mobility.

I admit thieves are pretty much pigeonhold into point decapper, +1er, and rezzer but don’t dismiss the value of those things. A well played thief is still very valuable. You act like every class has 8 million roles it can fill in this meta. To act like thieves are worthless is just flat out false.

You do realize when the patch hit all other classes got Damage buffs and sustain buffs while thief damage stayed about the same and sustain went down right? There’s a reason the number of threads started by thieves complaining about the class has skyrocketed since the patch.
Oh and let’s not forget about the addition of all the new reveal stuff that’s happening.

Prepatch I could confidently engage with most classes. Condi wars, Guardians, Some Engis and Condi mesmers gave me problems, but the rest I felt I had fair ground against.
Now after the patch the only classes I feel I can take on with confidence are power rangers and other thieves. I did not suddenly get worse. It also doesn’t help that my spec of choice d/d got nerfed into oblivion.

Oh, nononononono! There will still be other classes! So, logically, in order to attain perfect balance all but one class must be removed.
Then, only one set of gear may be allowed into PvP matches, and everyone must be forced to use this equipment.
And THEN, only one set of abilities may be used, and everyone must be forced to use these abilities.
Of course, keep in mind that all of those abilities must be exactly the same, lest one ability be better than another, so essentially you get a basic attack button that does a fixed amount of damage no matter who or what you hit. Hit Sixpack_Bob? 500 damage. Hit Pancakez-r-awesomenstuff? 500 points of damage. Somehow manage to hit yourself? 500 points of damage.

well…. Thief is pretty bad in random groups, because he relies heavily on teamplay:
1) Stealth-openers and stealth-movement as a team are often crucial in competetive teamplay. Doesn’t really work in random groups.
2) Stealthing a downed player often doesn’t work on lower levels as well, cuz they’ll break the stealth.
3) Thief is one of the best classes when you wanna spike a target down quickly, but this often requires good timing together with other players of the team.
4) Decapping and +1’ing isn’t easy, especially if you don’t have proper communication with the team. A thief needs to know where the opponents are or when they were seen last where to make accurate assumptions about whether or not to decap a point.
So yes, if you wanna play a Thief in random groups, you’re gonna have a bad time…. In proper groups with TS and good players, Thief’s are still among the top-tier classes for all the reasons named above.

We were supposed to be given a healing buff to compensate for the scaled damage of everyone else but never got it.
Its quietly listed as a bug – unimplemented in the wiki.
Why you would think that thief needs to get nerfed to be able to compete with classes that just received buffs to both sustain -and- dps is beyond me.

As I play shatter mesmer, the number one thing I constantly check is where thief is on the map. Because one mistake, you are basically a dead mesmer.

Umm…ride the lightning, zephyr’s speed, and the lightning teleport at least help d/d ele rival thieves’ mobility. The air attunement even has a nice interrupt. Tempest also gets a skill in air attunement where you could pull enemies back in, useful for when a ranger does point blank or guardian uses its push back in PvE.

Thief has a high skill floor and high skill cap. People that perform near the skill-cap can be the biggest asset of their team’s victory. The problem is, all the players that aren’t quite there complain b/c they aren’t very successful (a decent thief isn’t very good compared to a decent player on a more forgiving class, but a great thief is a monster)
Also, many people play thief b/c they want to be a 1v1-hero like rogues in other games are, and think its unfair that they aren’t on equal footing in fair fights AND have the best ability to create unfair fights.
I have never seen a class so complained about while still being used so universally in every tournament team. My only conclusion is that they just want the class to be easier to play.
It is one thing to complain about build diversity, but that is a problem amongst almost every profession thanks to power-creep. They can’t really buff under-used traits (like they did with blinding ashes on ele) because it just makes the strongest builds stronger, and they can’t really nerf the strongest traits too much or else the sole viable build that most classes have would collapse. But w/e HoT is coming….CHOO CHOO!

Thief is only worth playing if you are really good and have really good team to carry you. So don’t even bother with the class if both of this requirements are not fulfilled.
In HoT it will be worse. We might actually see thief completely fall out of meta.
It makes me really wonder why people think it is fun to play a pet and not a class.
What is even more comical is how many non-thief players say the class is fine yet cry rivers that they will lose match when they end up having 2+ thieves on team. You tell them: but guize you said thief is “fine”! Those people actually verbally harass you, rage quit and afk on you in match for not rerolling to other class /facepalm
I am actually surprised that such artificial creation of player griefing with help of terrible class design is allowed on first place. But then again someone is suffering from god complex apprently and there is sadly no valid path to hope :/

Seems i cant beat thief on 1v1 (while capping).
His combo basilisk venom —> stealth --> backstab —> daze (from steal) --> other skill, burn my hp so fast, sometimes i can literally die or on sliver hp

I would assume the thief would then go off and slow down some other player so that other player cannot reinforce a node. Also if somebody is sitting a node looking for a thief they are not elsewhere doing something more productive.

Stun break out of basilisk or use Distortion/Diversion, if you know he is around hold right click and spin your mouse around to try to stop him from getting the backstab double damage. If you use greatsword or focus knock him out Shadow Refuge with either 5 or 4.

That is unrealistic if you are using mirror anguish.You can also use invul instantly since it has no cast and will also blind thief giving you plenty of time to do something. If you are not using those traits in pvp as mesmer, then sry but your build needs improvement.
Also, in 2+ years of playing this game i have yet to die from single thief burst (besides in wvw from signet thief), usually i have multiple ways of dealing with them before my HP actually reaches 0 (and mind you, as i play thief and ele sometimes i don’t exactly have high HP from begin with).
I did get 1 shotted by mesmer burst w/o any tell out of stealth after spec patch hence why vamp rune became mandatory (and even it doesn’t save me from it most of the time as the mes dmg is usually so high and instant that even rune doesn’t have chance to activate).
I can beat bad mesmers by literary randomly dodging their first burst (if i manage predict them comming in stealth from other node) and just generally predict their next spell uses (bad mesmers always do same thing zzz), but vs really good mesmers? No chance.

Don’t play support guardian, your only role is to remove conditions and heal people in team fights.
Don’t play pewpew ranger, your only role is to snipe people that are unaware of you being there.
Don’t play engineer, your only role is to run around being tanky and holding off people.
Don’t play mesmer, your only role is to burst.
Don’t play warrior, your only role is to go rampage and throw rocks.

Thanks for answering. Yes, i do have 2 stun break (decoy & blink) maybe its because my ping (played from SEA always getting 300ms), its seems i have no time to react stun, & getting daze lead to my death

I can beat bad mesmers by literary randomly dodging their first burst (if i manage predict them comming in stealth from other node) and just generally predict their next spell uses (bad mesmers always do same thing zzz), but vs really good mesmers? No chance.
I’m not claim that thief is OP or i’m good at mesmer (infact i’m already state that i’m new to pvp mode)
Maybe im just bad, or my ping take a part of my lost. I’m just asking some tips if you have any, doesnt need to attacking if someone play bad mesmer or you a good thief

Don’t play support guardian, your only role is to remove conditions and heal people in team fights.
Don’t play pewpew ranger, your only role is to snipe people that are unaware of you being there.
Don’t play engineer, your only role is to run around being tanky and holding off people.
Don’t play mesmer, your only role is to burst.
Don’t play warrior, your only role is to go rampage and throw rocks.
- bunker guard actually sacrifices offensive spells/stats to be a bunker and IS really effective at it; guardian also can play burn or medi builds. Thief on other hand can sacrifice any stats/spells they want they are not effective at ANYTHING as far as combat goes.
- funny enough rangers are quite good in 1v1 fights, you can also play condi point holder or offensive sniper; reason why they are not play in tourneys is because mesmers are so much better and rangers fold under focus
- that is a lie about engis: they can play decap build, can play bruiser build, can play marader/high condi offensive builds; they are really good and versatile team fighters
- here is the joke: mesmers fill same role as thief (namely roamer) but they are way more robust and actually do more dmg and have more acess to CC…. they are strongest class along with dd ele atm and their combat capability wasn’t crippled so much by development for the sake of roaming role
- again not true: you can play rampage or you can play shoutbow – both builds are actually pretty good in current meta AND neither of them is incapable of combat
I am sorry but none of your examples are good. Thief is only profession in entire game that gives up defensive spells/abilities for offensives and still sucks at combat. Every other class in this game sees thief as loot bag.
Even if thieves would give up offensive capability, they are absolutely terrible at defensive role. Their entire playstyle atm consist of capping empty nodes, drop refuge on downed body and running away from enemies.
You do realize that if you want dmg or sustain buff then nerfs to mobility and stealth have to happen, righ?
Please stop those ignorant questions and statements. Have you ever heard of options? Who here is asking for buffs to what’s being used? Excuse my french but merde…
The thief community is the most ignorant one I’ve ever seen in any game, period.
While I see where you’re coming from, let’s list some facts:
- Thief is the best in slot for +1’ing and decapping eversince 2012 and one of the main reasons is shortbow. Now, why would you buff builds that are already #1? Nothing matches thief’s mobility. Every thief’s using shortbow, so whatever buffs you do to thief, you buff them in this role too. Creating a super mobile spec that can take 1v1s, hmm where have I seen that before?…
- Thief has access to the best stealth in the game especially with Shadow Arts, and makes it almost impossible to stomp allies while also giving them damage reduction to shield them from cleave. Just by pressing F next to a downed ally both of you will gain stealth, you don’t even need to use a skill. While counterplay’s being added, I’m sure it won’t be countered that often.
- Steal. Instant cast, can be used while CC’d, it goes through any stacks of stability, and even interrupts at the same time, along with many many other important things on a ~20s CD.
- Shortbow cleave and spam – skill #2 provides great downed cleave, skill #4 is a spammable AoE poison with no CD which is also great when there is a downed enemy around. Then you have skill #3 you can just spam while on low HP or immobilized.
And this isn’t the full list of thief’s strengths. Yes it’s squishy and can’t take 1v1s. But unless it gets nerfed in other areas, it absolutely shouldn’t be buffed.

Imo it just looks like thief’s being balanced around what the best thieves would theoretically be able to do… the ones who’re so skilled with the class they appear OP, the ones who just know everything about the class and make it work so perfectly… Honestly, i remember myself starting playing pvp with my thief and can’t do ANYTHING till i grew more skilled, unlike other classes which was fun to experiment with in unranked, felt way more forgiving and gave a lot of room for mistakes. Just my thoughts… i love the class but can’t help becoming salty and depressed on it after few matches. I still hope it’ll get better soon… and btw i remember someone was laughing here about a thief losing to a warrior… well lemme just say that- zerk warrior. Even with marauder amulet i got insta downed, and when i looked in the combat chat, i saw a chain of 9Ks crit dmg every 1/4 second, something that even a backstab can’t do with marauder amulet… if you’ve lost 1v1 against a thief then it must be that they’re extremely good, or that you made every single mistake available to your class. Or both. Sry i’m just really salty and frustrated about that… hope you can understand this

It’s like if the balance team wanna give thieves extra dodge ( ) everyone is like: “nooooo now they’ll have perma dodge nerf ittttt” or addind dmg to pistol: “what have you done, do you really think thieves need MORE dmg???” Or just: “omg i got downed by a thief nerf them!!!!” :P

This is the sad reality of thief. Its fair to conclude thief will never feel effective or good for a casual player with no devotion to the class to improve.
However, its also sad that some classes – you know which ones – are getting away with being tweaked with cries of casuals. I mean seriously… Scrapper reveal? Did Engineers REALLY needed more counterplay* to stealth? Really Irenio?
*ironic ’cause nobody knows/cares to exploit the existing counterplays to stealth or thus needing a “hard counter” like reveal.

Yeah they always forget we CAN recieve damagd while stealthed… best counterplay- spam aoe and stand in it :/ in like 2 sec you’ll notice a small downed figure at you back ;P
