Greatsword Thieves
As much as I’d love to see this in opposite of the Thief = Dagger stereotype. Generally, thieves don’t wield heavy two handed weapons because they’d be an hindrance to their mobility.
Yeah… but i see some other classes going opposite to their class stereotypes too. elementalists have a staff stereotype, but they can still use daggers. necromancers have a focus, dagger staff stereotype but where the heck did axes come from? Rangers have a longbow/shortbow/dagger stereotype but they can only use offhand dagger, aaand they still have greatsword and axe use, which is out of the blue. Generally, if you thought of these professions outside of Gw2, they typically don’t have these weapons. But Anet made the skills to fit the profession for that weapon, which is why they’ve become accepted. They can do the same thing for thief greatsword I think!
Weird as it may seem in a lot of ways, I would actually really like that. I can’t justify it in any way, I just would XD
Using Greatsword / Pistols DMC style would be cool as hell, too.
On one hand, I think I would rather see dual swords first. On the other, this would mean using the giant chainsaw on my Thief…

Imo, a thief~ someone who simply takes anything they want and can get their hands on~ should be able to use any weapon in the game effectively, except for maybe magic related things like Focus, Staff, Scepter.
Give me rifle at 1200 range first then we’ll talk about great sword
There was this game called shadowbane, and one of the most hilarious specs to run for PvP was a group of greatsword backstabbers. In that particular game certain races got inherent weapon skills, and one race “nephilim” had an inherant greatsword line, so you could roll them as greatsword thieves.
I’ll agree that stealth characters with large 2h weapons seem kind of anti-thematic, but from my experiences in that game I will say that the results are often hilarious. We had another ambush spec with giant tanky werebear transforms that was similarly hilarious. Shame that bear transformations are kinda lackluster in GW2 or I’d do this again.

I’d rather have dual axe. Shadow Zerker anyone?
This is the one thing I actually miss from AoC, running around as a two handed zerker.
Rangers and Mesmers wielding greatswords is imo rediculous enough so lets please not ruin the Thief now aswell. As mentioned above a Thief has need of mobility and wielding a big clunky greatsword does not improve that feature in the least. If there is need for something “cool” howabout a pair of light sabres ? these could easily be made by the asurans and only usable by thieves. Or maybe Ninja related weapons ? just a thought.

ninjas?
I don’t know, that’s all I got.
I agree…and while at it, why not make it dual wielding…so you can dual wield greatswords:
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep!!!!!
I’m against thieves using greatswords based on the fact that I’m tired of all the greatswords I see :\ It’s bad enough that they released 3 legendary greatswords, and only one of every other weapon!
However, I’m all for dual swords, rifles and torch!
it’ll be cool if they added katana skins so as not to make a gs thief look clunky.
I don’t want a greatsword. I want staves.
Not for spells though. Pick up that broomstick and start swinging it around like Jackie Chan.
Defensive PBAoE melee set please!
Maybe they should give each profession every weapon imaginable and then everyone would be happy.

Or just delete all proffesions except one, so all will be balanced Like in Magicka
yeah was gonna say.. greatsword nay.. KATANA!! rawrrrrr
Rifle, then offhand sword, then spear, then katana.
Maybe some Eastern themed weaponry, or even an offhand torch.

I actually like the idea of this and the Katana, if mobility was a concern why did they give the Mesmer a light armorer mage-like character the ability to use Greatswords…

Because the Mesmer doesn’t use the greatsword as a weapon, they use it as a FOCUS. The Ele doesn’t use their daggers as weapons, they’re used as foci. The Necro doesn’t use the axe as a weapon, they use it as a focus.
Mesmers are also portrayed in the game as blade duelists, so the GS and 1hS both fit that concept.
Thieves use weapons as weapons, not as magical foci, because they’re not a scholar profession. Big difference here.
I would rather see thieves using Katars,Shuriken,Throwing daggers(Short range daggers not the melee ones),Double wielding 1Hand Swords etc.
But generally speaking if you think thieves only should be able to use small weapons or mobility weapons thats not quite true. I mean who says that thieves are not like bandits waiting in the woods with axes and maces and stuff to ambush their prey for gold and treasures.
. Really though, they should have just named “f1” assassinate, and called the kitten class assassin and gotten it over with(poison traps, venoms, backstabs, come on now).
Assassin is a class from GW1 that originates from Cantha (the isolated province, you can read lore about it in game somewhere, can’t remember where)
Anet stated, when they announced the thief, that they wanted to call them assassins but couldn’t because of confusion between the cathan assassins and the tyrian thiefs. Assassins could only be trained if you were in cantha. Since that place is isolated, all thiefs in GW2 are NOT trained in cantha and thus, are not assassins

this is tru, gs wasnt what came to mind when i thought mesmer but i really like the idea of it now. i dont even play thief but i would really like to see uncharacteristic weapons on some classes. maybe in a future expansion we could see this. i think it would be really cool.
much rather see maces on thieves so we can have a distraction or sap of some kind to keep enemies from casting. would be nice to be able to sap in stealth as well.

some of the things I wanted on mine in the future. mace is one of the weapons i wish we had, would be nice to interrupt pve mobs before they could cast their stealth or their big knockback attack.
instead of a greatsword… why not a lighter katana we hold with 2 hands? it wouldn’t hinder thief mobility and it would have it’s own offhand skills like the shortbow. plus it would look pretty awesome on our backs.

RYU HAYABUSA!!!
Make one of the skills an izuna drop animation :P
If Thieves could have Greatswords there would be even more of a reason not to play Ranger. The gs is a lot of fun, and it’s too bad Thieves can’t use them because let’s face it dd and shortbow get old after a while. Then, let’s give Thieves the longbow, too. Now, we can erase the Ranger class and pretend like that never even happened. Finally, we can get some good looking ninja turtle armor and call it a day.
i always tought that too, imho the thief have a very few weapons to use and some new weapon should be implemented
For new weapons I’d want Hand2Hand weapons the most. :<
Hi I am new to GW2, I can help in this old idea. The thief wont be using great sword it is not a Japanese tradition so instead the class would use a two hand samurai blade, so yes this idea can be possible.

Katana (1 handed sword) and Kama (Axe?)
YES PLEASE!
Ah yes...bring back the Shadowblade from DAoC. Backstab with a 2h sword for 1 shotters!!!

Hey I’m a mesmer and I’m going to use my giantic and sharp two handed sword to shoot purple laser beams. Sounds legit.
Anyways, I do like the idea of a katana for the thief. Of course there’s no weapon available for only one class, maybe rangers and necromancers could use it as well?

I didn’t know it was a japanese tradition to steal stuff and all that. Oh wait, you weren’t speaking about the Thief class am I right?
As much as I like the idea lets spread the other weapons around before we ANOTHER class a great sword. Lets give the other weapons some love. What about a thief hammer or longbow?
I’m sorry, but a great sword just does not fit with a thief.
At all.
Thieves no longer have any long range options, so maybe a rifle. Even that is pushing it.
JQ
Greatsword doesn’t suit the Thief even slightly and I hope that we never, ever get them. A main hand axe or mace would be 100x better.
all is vain
They aren’t going to add a katana. Just like they aren’t going to add rapier. You have one handed sword and two handed sword no reason to go and add more. I think rifle would be good but the kit would be similar to the ranger’s longbow kit. More damage the farther you are, stealth. Mace wouldn’t be too bad as like a back yard beatdown thug type weapon. I could still see greatsword.
