One weapon only, whats the point?
The weapon you received after getting out of tutorial/prologue is the first off-hand weapon you can equip. Go into Hero window by pressing H or open your bag by pressing I, drag the weapon onto your equipment slot or double click it to equip it. Hope this helps.
Edit: Also, thieves’ third weapon skill varies with different combination of weapons, don’t forget to unlock them all through killing mobs with different weapons.
I know all of that.
If you only have one weapon equipped, it unlocks a 3ed ability unique to that weapon.
Whats the point? None of the one weapon only skills seems to be worth running around two abilities short.
I don’t think ANet intends for us to run with one weapon, I think the one-weapon skills are just there to help you get around until you receive a second weapon.
Which kinda sucks, viable one-weapon abilities could help alleviate the issue of thieves having such a small arsenal of weapons.
That doesnt make any sense either.
You get a 2nd weapon right after your finish the prelude. Plus all main hand weapons have it, not just the one you start with.
as it stands, there’s no real reason to use a single weapon at all. if thieves were given the #4 and #5 skills from the pistol or dagger and a new pair of skills were introduced for the sword, it would open up a light change in the game play. nothing all that drastic, but still something.
It’d be cool if they gave us generically applicable “Touch” skills from GW1 Assassin for the empty off-hand.
My suggestions/wishes:
Palm Strike 3 Initiative
Iron Palm 6 Initiative

Well when you think it about, it doesn’t make any sense matter what. Only using a single one-handed weapon means you lose a ton of stats, so even if the abilities were decent individually the kit itself would be worthless (unless they added some kind of offhand “filler” item to serve as a stats platform, which would be interesting).
The devs never stated what the point of these were, so we can only assume they are bridge abilities to carry you until you get another weapon, or they just leftover abilities from an earlier version of the game that never got removed. Regardless, from the looks of it there isn’t a point them atm, so I guess it doesn’t matter anyway.
It is there(the 3rd skill) because the main hand weapon HAS to give you 3 skills. It is just that the way the thief weapons are we do not get to use them because of the dual skills we receive.

I actually like “stab” with one sword…It’s like flanking strike without the buggy and annoying flank part. Although it is weaker…
why would you use an single weapon and lose + 90 power +64 precision +5% critical damage overall in stats at full potential

If they added in a “glove”, “empty”, or “touch” off-hand that gives stats and lets you act as a MH-only with 5 skills, then the Thief (and any other class with the option) would have a lot of variety.
Lots of people have been requesting “Make one handed thieves viable” since since the beginning, the devs just outright ignore these requests, just face it, they wont do it, no matter how many people want it.

The upside to these skills being in place is that it reduces the amount of potential work required if there were to be more weapon sets added. Allowing thieves to use an off-hand Focus with #4/5 skills but inheriting #3 from the “empty off hand” set, for instance.
There’s no harm in leaving them as-is, but they could create a base for something in the future, although it’d still require some tuning.

In this case we would still be running 2 weapons like the other setups.
I won’t complain though, I like the idea, was just mentioning
