This is a pure “L2P” thread. Trying to see what I’m doing wrong. I started about 3 months ago.
I have two questions, really…
1. How quickly should a thief be able to kill something?
2. What skills are used to achieve the quickest kills?
I’ve been playing in sPvP often recently. I can seem to put up a battle, though very few kills actually come quickly. I’ve read forums about 1- or 2-shotting people. I’ve read that thieves have some of the highest damage bursts in the game. But my poor, little thief seems like she needs to hit the gym.
I used to WvW with the hated condi/stealth build… Dire/Krait. I actually managed to survive for a while. But it took so long to kill anything. So I moved to a power build (equally hated by non-thieves, it seems). I can kill faster, but I can also die faster.
This is my current build…

I’ve also used this build for more evades…

The runes vary between Pack, Vampirism, and Scholar, though I’m trying out Traveler for the added mobility.
Anyway, my issue is that I don’t know if my lack of lethality is my own doing, or if it’s normal for fights to drag out so long.
I use dagger/dagger because I like the simplicity of Cloak and Dagger to get into stealth, with Backstab giving me the damage capability. When it hits hard, it hits really hard. But more often than not, my after my first Mug/CnD/BS combo, the opponent lost only a small bit of health.
I understand it may be due to their builds, but I’m not sure how to actually fight a war of attrition consistently against such armored foes when it takes one good stun to take me out of the fight. I usually switch to Sword/Dagger and start using Flanking Strike/Larcenous Strike to rip boons. For some reason, it also seems to hit the hardest of all my attacks, though I’m not sure why.
I guess I just find it odd that I’m not outdamaging other professions. When I’m playing playing Stronghold, I see a necro take out a guard in less than 3 seconds. When I go up against one, it takes me significantly longer.
The last match I was in, I was attacking (I believe) a guardian. He seemed to want to have nothing to do with me, so he just ran away. I pursued. I used my Mug/CnD/BS combo. I used Dancing Dagger to slow him down. I stuck to him like glue with auto-attacks and Cnd/BS for a good 10 seconds, wondering why he didn’t just turn and blast me. I barely got him down to half-health.
I don’t know. I just feel like I’m squishy and fighting with noodles. I hit pretty hard against other thieves and some mesmers, but everything else (including NPC’s) feels like sponges. It also seems like other professions outdamage me by a significant margin.
I’ve currently got a power of 2,374. Is that too low?
Are 1v1 battles supposed to last a long time?
Haha, I guess I’m just frustrated that my “glass cannon” feels like it’s a glass pea-shooter sometimes.
So please, fellow thieves, share with me the secrets of becoming hated for my abilities instead of the myths and reputation of my chosen profession. Thank you! /bow
