Hello good afternoon Thieves.
I was wondering how you all would feel about getting a SUPPORT oriented Elite Spec.

Would anybody here be against that?

No thank you, that’s what Dragonhunters are for, even if their name doesn’t make sense at all.

Honestly I would like to see something along the lines of a “marked for death” skill where if your allies attack the same target as you, we share buffs/incoming damage and both gain X might X fury.. although I know this is never going to happen because it would be extremely overpowered.. but I can dream right?

Support meaning healing/buffing/… your allies then no – thieves take out targets in the backline of the enemy’s team so any aupport there wouldnt make sense

Support meaning putting vunerability/immobilize/debuffs for more condi duration or whatever would be something else as that would mean a different offensive support to the team than guards for example with their might stacks have

With my playstyle (solo roamer if in wvw) though any kind of support wouldnt be exactly what i’m hoping for – i think a more egoistic specialization first and then anet can give us some kind of support [maybe with “shouts” that mark the target or so, possibly some kind of scouty support or sth]

why ppl keep opening this threads?!… the elite specialization is already DONE they are not waiting for our feedback or listening to our suggestions… they have chosen for us and made it happen, nothing we say or do will change that! all we can do is wait and see what they have for us…

there it is! your support role!

for thieves to be capable full team support they would need massive revamp in survival since their main defense (no matter what build) is offense and going full support leaves them defenseless

We have traited venom share and traited stealth share in SA as well as Bountiful Theft in Trickery thief has it’s own support style but it’s present and is getting improved through core specializations. It makes no sense to have it as an elite one same way it makes no sense in protesting if they actually did.

Honestly, I just want something that adds more deception to the thief. I dont think thief is really meant to be a support driven class and to hold to the authenticity of thief, it would be better to have more abilities to confuse your targets. Like a skill that produces a clone while you are in stealth but doesnt unstealth you.

Sending your attackers after a dummy clone or something. Or even you and a clone appear at the same time after stealth to attack your opponent.

Kinda mesmer like but not really mesmer like.

the last thing i want is for them to keep trying to make the thief a support class

Here’s the thing about thieves. I’ll break them down in the 2 PvP oriented situations in gw2.

sPvP:
The reason a support thief doesn’t work in sPvP is because it’s an invis class, and with the ability of invisibility there is nowhere that a thief can hold a point which is what a support class does. They hold points and heal the teamates. Additionally, thief has the best single target fighting ability in the game. If there was a chance that a support thief was viable, then there would be a huge loss in DPS and a high chance that people either run zerk everything to compensate for it or there will be a 2 thief comp, 1 support and 1 zerk, and so far nothing supports as good as a shoutbow/cele engi does.

WvW: This is just silly to thing a support thief is viable here. In a zerg, the warriors/guardians give all support they need and nearly everything else is dps based so why would we change a class with very low toughness/vitality base to a tank to do with this too?

Idk, I’m all against support thief simply because if you want to be nearly unkillable right now just run full shadow arts and that’s getting buffed.

I’m hoping for something focused around revealed bonuses versus passive stealth defenses that are seemingly always-necessary due to the dependency on SE.

I have to agree with your breakdown and I think people need to allow themselves to understand the difference between supporting a team and just being a toolbox for your team to use. I support my team consistently by intercepting and locking down the other side quickly and bursting fast to either end it or put them out of the fight for a few minutes at least. All within a few seconds I can intercept for a teammate or commander, control a couple of badguys, put someone in a down state, and maybe revive someone before breaking out. My build has been simmered down to do exactly that within a few actions, it’s just not sparkly and I don’t hold my hand in the air to shoot a magical beam of light on a teammate to support them.

Edit: of course any build is at the mercy of it’s user, I tend to do a lot of stupid stuff and forget I’m not my broken DPS Tank Guardian from Age of Conan so even a slightly supportive thief build in the hands of someone who’s actually good should be able to turn a fight around in a blink.

In revealed you could infinite incoming damage or conditions you’re asking for a necro treatment imo, defensive revealed bonuses are a terrible idea, but they are trying to create more cleansing options out of SA.

Nah, not interested in a support build for thief. A good ranged option would be nice, but if we get rifle, we’ll probably have next to no AoE from it. =/

I think Shortbow is the Thief ranged AoE weapon. A long range single target weapon (Longbow or Rifle) is something Thieves are missing, although Stealth hits from very long range might be broken balance-wise.
