What do you hope for with Rifle?
Personally I’d just like to have a rifle weapon with a bunch of utility type skills. Knock backs, stealths, blinds, etc. Other than that, I don’t really mind what they do to be honest. I’m just glad to have a new weapon, whatever it may be
Absolutely nothing.
I have my bars set extremely low to avoid any form of disappointment.
I would, however, be ecstatic if we get GS though…because then, I can at least use all my fancy GS skins on thief.

Nothing. I think that every form of focused DPS ranged weapon on Thief is doomed to be useless.
I dunno. I feel like any kind of cc on its skills would be hard to balance simply due to the initiative mechanic, so I’d personally expect mostly dps with vulnerability or so.

Lock of all other skills and traits,so the new ones only focus on the specialisation hopefully inspired from Critical Strikes, traits and skills with variation like IP in a CS, AoE impact on bullet hit,protection specific boon removal.. Meh we’ll see I’m aware I am aiming too high.

i honestly get some creeping feeling it’s gonna be something silly like torch…. a lot of torch skills cause blind… and burn… unless it’s only 2 handed weapons. then nevermind that. I can’t imagine anything with rifle cept a sniper like skill set. invisibility’s #1 skill would probably be like… headshot…. which will daze for 1 second…
the number 2 skill will probably be something like immobilize
number 3 will probably be some sort of retreat skill.
number 4 might probably be a crippling skill for close range
number 5 might be some sort of jump or cloak.

m sorry but that is idiotic. Can you imagine Sword – Dagger thieves 2 skill teleporting them away?? That is the same thing mate.
And why can’t we have burst at range? Because whiners say so? Rangers can burst at range and thieves are meant to be strong at burst.
Giving them a really strong single target damage weapon to control and take out targets fits perfectly into it

First, if they gave us a burst on it you know it would end up as an initiative dump just like unload. That’s why the auto at closer range hits for slightly harder than ranger longbow at full distance(it’s equivalent to lifeblast at >600 units).
Sword 2 allows you to engage and disengage (i.e. teleport away). This allows you to control the fight. As to the gap closer. If you read through all of them, you can see that it deals the most damage at medium range, while coming down to SB damage at long range. The gap closer allows you to pursue and harass a fleeing enemy. When they turn around after they realize they can’t escape, you’ve got a short distance knockback, blind, and evade (gap creator) all ready. This allows you to control the distance and pace of the fight just like sword 2. Additionally, it’s meant to synergize with other weapons because of the cripple, especially D/D which lacks the gap closers this has. It’s about controlling the fight without having too many hard cc’s (so hopefully less QQ).
Example: Ranger on a ledge that’s keeping distance in PvP Rapid Firing your teammates. You could try to fight him at range, but that’s likely not going to go in your favor. You could use the gap closer, saving steal, knock him into into the fight with the short range knockback, then he’s crippled, and interrupted, so you can switch to your close combat set and engage. The damage is equivalent to a 50-25% heartseeker as well(slightly more damage than mug), so it makes a nice opener.
If you don’t like it, that’s fine. That’s just what I want to see: Medium to high sustained damage without having to use up initiative so you can actually react to your opponents.
You really have to think about what thief is currently missing from it’s kitten nal, and that’s mostly AoE dps. I think if thief does get rifle it’s going to be more like an arquebus or scatter-shotgun. Short to medium range, ground-target aoes, very little if any pew-pew type attacks, and probably a melee cc/gap creator. The real interesting question is how or if they will incorporate stealth into the weapon.

Alright. Thief is often a source of high burst damage and relies, when defending itself, on mobility (and positioning), blinds to an extent, dodge movements + endurance management, aaand stealth. Most of used weapon combinations give a measured amount of all of the above. All the weapons will get you up close and personal with your opponent, and this is where Initiative shines, and its management is what the Thief is all about.

The problem is that you’re on a class that doesn’t have cooldowns, so you’d be primarily spamming that burst damage skill whenever it’s up and then go back to auto-attacking when you’re empty on initiative. The Shortbow and Pistols are okay in that matter because you’re close enough to keep some initiative for one of the various utility skills when you fight. But with the rifle, you’re pretty much a Warrior with no cooldowns at that point, and not only that’s boring, but it’s not quite Thief like in terms of core gameplay.
Also, there will be the matter of stealth striking with the rifle, especially in PvP. Doing so with the shortbow, or a pistol at 900 range gets you to be close enough for a prepared opponent to make a response attempt, to jump on you, to shoot you back. With a rifle’s stealth attack, assuming that you still want burst, you’d be mowing your unsuspecting prey down at 1200 – 1500 range and he’ll have two options: To flee, or to desperatly make an attempt at catching you, and he’ll already be 3/4 dead with defenses already used when he gets to you. That’s not quite healthy. And should a nerf come to pass with this, the weapon will simply suck.

Oh, and Steal would only be there to look good.
I understand that many Thieves want to be shadow snipers or whatever, others simply want a 1200 range weapon, but the very core of the class will make it incredibly difficult to make this wish a reality.

Make it a high damage with shadow steps and a skill that stealths you for 5 or so seconds or whatever as long as you are stationary and said stealh gives you bonus damage or something. I main a Ranger but would love to be a sniper on my Thief.
