What's so exciting about Rifle thief?
1200 range……………….
for the most part, Thieves have basically no ranged options. You have the pistol, but at 900 range and sub-par damage if you’re not stacking condition damage, it’s simply not worth it to take. The shortbow got nerfed pretty hard, and still only has 900 range. A long range power setup would be ideal for expanding build options and making the class more versatile.

Nothing exciting about it. It’s just going to solidify Pistol/Pistol as the most useless weapon set in the game.
Because rifle is the least weeaboo, no offense. All these players wanting to be samurai, monks and ninjas just really bug me.

Really, no offense taken. I would like to have a samurai thing at some point, but I don’t believe it should be until we actually go to the asian inspired continent of the setting – Cantha. Elsewise, it’ll feel ludicrously out of place. I mean, that’s why they’re giving Rangers the Druid spec, right? because it makes sense in terms of the story.
(besides, if you want to be a ninja, just go dual daggers and you’re done.)

I think some people like the idea of beeing a sniper.
But there is already a sniper spec in the game (LB ranger) so it would be a little bit redundant.
On the other side, with our high mobility and great access to stealth, I cannot see how this would be good balanced. A rifle would be either op or just meh like p/p imo.
There is a reason why we have no valid distance weaponset.
Think of it like P/P that doesn’t suck. High single target ranged DPS on an incredibly squishy character with high mobility is a match made in heaven.
Rifle can always end up blowing, of course, and we will never use our Specialization.
Personally, I think it will be some sort of a slow aiming long range weapon that allows you to stay in stealth for a long time without moving. It will be useless for anything but WvW where you one-shot Zerkers with it.

In my opinion, it really isn’t the weapon that I’m excited about.. but the brand new trait line that we’ll receive, I’m also wondering which line it’ll replace.
I’m not excited at all. I was really hoping they would add something nice for us thiefs. Longbow would be better, but I’d really prefer dual swords, or even a mace. Just not a rifle really. Maybe the new traits though will work nice with my d/p thief.

unsubstantiated whether for or against. There’s a strong argument to be made that it was a thief, however, in that it was in the same shot as the hammer engi at one point and we know for a fact rangers aren’t getting rifles.
Let us have out speculation. It doesn’t do any harm to chat about our wants, and it lets the devs know the sorts of things we’d like to have.
There are two things that bugs me if Thief’s specialisation were to become Snipers (aka getting a Rifle).
Firstly, it’ll sound weird as a logical progression. Assassin -> Sniper would be a closer match but GW2 utilizes the profession (bleh, class) as “Thief”, which would fit the transition more towards “Rogue/Pirate/Corsair”. I know Ranger -> Druid isn’t perfect match either but least Rangers relate to their animal taming and kindling with spirits.
Secondly, I’m getting shivers down my back at the thought that I could possibly be sniped by a Thief with their 1 skill from hide, at 1200 range, dealing backstab-like damage (to imitate a headshot).

You can hit 10k killshots in rapid succession from 1500 range, but if you get caught in close quarters you’re screwed. That sounds like what a lot of people are looking for, I just don’t see why Thieves need the exact same thing.
On the contrary – warriors have an assault rifle. Yes, it’s still a rifle, but the use is much, much different. When was the last time you saw a sniper do rapid-fire?
i wouldn’t have high hope on rifle thief

melee will always be better dps, range will always be bad dps, samething even with ranger.
and you don’t need 1200 most of the time

shortbow will still be better, single target ranged weapon arent gonna be that good, look at rifle war, lb ranger barely in the meta except owning noobs, etc.
and i wouldn’t except for it to be good or at least no better then ranger lb in any means as how many disengage thief has and thief is more made for mid to close range combat. same level as a war rifle perhaps?
and about sniper, it wouldn’t exist, because they will never allow for one shot kill at least not with thief who have stealth and blinks, look at killshot. it will just be bad skills overall.

Guys don’t spoil this cause I would really love it if we actually got a rifle. Out range weapons are just too lame tbh…
Pistols are using rubber bullets that’s why Head Shot only daze people, while a Rifle, a Head Shot would blow their gibbs out.
I expect that Rifle Thief would be a slow paced mechanic, a complete opposite of the current fast paced Thief mechanic. It would also be a good addition if ArenaNet reintroduce a GW1 condition — deep wound.
Anyway, that’s how high I’m willing to take my hopes.
Full set of 5 unique skills for both dual-wield weapon sets: P/P and D/D – Make it happen
PvE – DD/CS/AC – If that didn’t work, roll a Reaper or Revenant.

The main purpose of the rifle on the Warrior is to take out enemies with Killshot – a 1500 range burst attack. A fully buffed zerker sniper warrior in WvW can 1 hit pretty much any class in the game. It’s also possible to 1 hit multiple enemies with 1 Killshot since rifle shots can be traited to pierce. Most people want Thieves to get a sniper rifle which would function similarly. I get that you like the Sniper-Assassin aesthetic, I do too, but we’re only getting 1 new weapon with this expansion, and I would rather it not be the same thing as what’s already available in-game.

I disagree. LB is high range single target burst. Beside the animation, the gameplay is like a sniper rifle.

When you give a sneaky dude a rifle, at least i think of long range, slow rate of fire, high damage. Which fits direct damage burst more than condition.

It does bug me too, yet, all I seem to see is that most of people want to stuff their death dealing dark shadow mass-murdering assassins of doom (or whatever concept) with extreme range weapons that one-shots and that contain skills giving them mobility and more burst for that 360-noscope feel. That’s hardly any better in concept than some samurai, monk, ninja, Altair or whatever. To get the Thief to remain a Thief is difficult, and the community doesn’t want a Thief.

Yeah but warrior who is also a melee class has 2 1200 weapons. I would not like one of my favorite classes to be screwed on range because melee class.

Exactly. And rifle engineer is the highly-mobile blunderbuss-style play we’d come to expect from the other side of things.
I’d really prefer the class to also have the longbow if no new weapons are implemented. We already have obvious skill with the shortbow, so there’s no reason why we couldn’t take on a marksman-type which so many rangers/thieves want from a mobile single-target DPS.
Not to mention, every additional firearms-based build makes P/P worse relatively, and the rifle just doesn’t fit the bill without either copying the warrior’s kit (boring) or changing the class design and feel immensely.
I’m hoping that the thief does get some love elsewhere, but have a feeling we’re just getting the rifle :\

1200 range would be a huge deal, especially on my D/D stab build, as well as generally in PvP formats, and it would open up more possibilities with less counter-play by better-allowing me to engage a fight properly.
If new weapons are to come, I’d be all-in for a crossbow. It’s definitely the most fitting thematically, and could solve a lot of potential problems like the lack of a 1200 range option, and open up more doors for more mobile styles other classes or builds just can’t bring.

Thieves have a perfect mechanic for wanting to have single and offhand weapons… I would have loved to see duall axes, for the oldfashioned bandit look….
I would really dislike if they added a 2 handed weapon like rifles…

It was stated by people who asked questions at the after party (so take it with a grain of salt) that there are no new weapons. No idea if that means that current weapons have been re-purposed (like land-spears) or not, but supposedly there’s nothing new (yet).

I’m not sure rifle thief makes sense considering warrior kill shot and lb rangers. The other options are limited though.
If they get staff or gs with current initiative system still I would certainly give it a go. GS weapon skills without CD? Crazy!

I can understand the desire for a 1200 range weapon, but I think you have to acknowledge that if we did get such a weapon, it definitely wouldn’t be able to really bursty without some serious drawbacks(meaning it would only really be good for gimmicky quick kills in perfect scenarios) since having something with the power of say ,Killshot, coming out of stealth just screams one-trick pony that will get nerfed anyway, leaving you with a single target, not-so burst weapon that probably wouldn’t be worth it anymore.

Kind of more or less why I support the longbow (or better yet, crossbow). Such a weapon would need to have no stealth and no blind access, otherwise it interferes with other sets or synergizes too well with the class’s other effects. Consider something like a fixed-distance, always-forward Infil Arrow as a re-posion skill for a low initiative cost (exactly like how Ink Shot works), but much faster and just the ability to hit at 1200 for reasonable damage on the auto-attack to maintain this distance. It doesn’t need burst damage or stealth or CC or durabiliy so much as something to play into the whole high-speed ranged character model that just focuses on not getting hit, thus the dependency on 1200 ranger over 900. Rifles don’t really fit the bill thematically for this so much as an archery weapon does, and this doesn’t exist anywhere else in the game.
