I chose Thief as my main because I love dual pistols. So much that I’ve used them from lvl 2 to lvl 80. The medium armor needs more then trench coats but I like running into mobs guns blazing.

And fingerless gloves. Love em.

Lets face it

Warrior and Guardian is a boring class. Ranger is pretty fun, but it’s almost purely ranged builds I don’t like. There isn’t many available decent cqc classes, which I enjoy. I’m thinking about making an elementalist though. I hear with the right combo they can dude well in cqc.

The sword/pistol set originally drew me in. I was going for a swashbuckler/buccaneer/ship council style, and this was enhanced greatly by the medium armor sets available as well. Unfortunately Sword/Pistol proved not all that effective, and then was subsequently nerfed into uselessness. I was already in the middle of a transition to D/P before the nerf hit, and D/P is significantly stronger, but just doesn’t have the same flavor to it.

Ranger (bored me even more, hide behind your pet and shoot)
Elementalist (nice effects, but not my playstyle)
Engineer (kinda liked that one, probably gonna level it next)

I just really enjoy the fast paced fps-like play style of thieves.

Elements using casters / Rogue type classes are usually those who are fun for me, maybe ranger/hunter type in some games, but those two i mentioned first just fits my playstyle. Ele failed unfortunately (I don´t see their only viable spec – bunker as a caster class playstyle, so I´m stuck with Thief now). Love the Thiefs fast paced-action combat Even in Condition spec which I´m now playing.

Since P&P AD&D – yeah kids- whats that? I’ve always played Thief/Swashbuckler types just so happens these for me are the most fun in mmos too. Played Witch Hunter in Warhammer. Fast play style movement being a big key, surprise and thinking about your surroundings, well paced and fun. I think I’d find some other classes a bit dull. Insta-gank isn’t really fun for me but springing in from nowhere to save/help escape an outnumbered team mate and especially killing an enemy right in front of their team mates eyes and getting away makes me all fuzzy and warm.

I really wanted to play a ranged class… so I tried the ranger first… it was soooooo boring… then I tried the engineers and just didn’t like dealing with all the gimmicks… it takes a lot of attention to play an engineer… you’d figure that if it requires sui much attention and skill it would be remotely good… nope… that class is worse than what backstab thieves well be even after the nerf… then u tried a rifle warrior… that was sui boring… the class is so OP you don’t even need to use skills.. you can just auto-attack and rifle butt enemies away if some tanky enemy actually gets to you… and oh yea… you don’t take any damage on top of that with heavy armor lol… so then I went to P/P thief… it was fun to play but pistols were just underwhelming… they killed SO SLOW… terrible… SB was not much better… so I ended up with the only viable thief build… backstab… a shame there are no good ranged options on this game…

I used to like playing Dot-classes, namingly a Shadowpriest during most of my WoW time. I was really good at it too.

However I always felt that mana was a rather obnoxious resource system and never really quite worked. It also really held you back in PvP. I then went through a Warrior phase in early Cataclysm and later on in SWTOR where I rolled a DPS Guardian.

I like the upfront and visceral play-style of the Warrior archetype and still do today.

However for some reason the Warrior in GW2 never really got me all that excited. Maybe I wanted more independence or just a different play-style. Anyway, I settled on the Thief pretty early on and have never really changed my mind about it since then.

I actually didn’t choose thief first. I chose elementalist. He was cool. I got him to 40 and was getting bored and felt to squishy for solo. I was horrible with him in dungeon…and I realize I’m not the strongest player, so I didn’t like his dungeon play style I could kite, but that got really boring. I actually made a thief, deleted him at lvl 6 and for some reason came back to him. He’s my main noe (lvl 76). I love my thief! It actually took me a about 20 levels before I started using steal and I wish I would have realized how great it is sooner! I play condition build and use sb a lot in dungeons. I do use d/d when I think I won’t die in melee!

It’s just my style. I played a feral Druid for 5 years in WoW. Chose Druid because I couldn’t decide what I really wanted to do. I eventually rerolled Rogue after it became clear to me that I only really liked cat form, and the rest of Druid was a waste, so i went for more focus.

A year later GW2 came along and I went through classes one by one to make sure there wasn’t something I liked more. In the end I cam back to Rogue—err, Thief.

Deep down inside I’m still a Rogue who fantasizes about killing other players naked with only a 0.9DPS worn dagger and metal on in the background. Mute inspired me.

I chose thief because I usually play the sneaky/stealthy class in games, and usually roll with the underdog specs. S/D is a fun challenge to play, sorta similar to Combat Rogues in WoW in PvP.

I also enjoy the versatility of the thief, so many ways of doing damage and escaping/confusing foes with stealth/roots/teleports.

D/D is fun as well, I just don’t like insta-gib specs.

Put simply, the need for speed.

Now I’m used to getting 3 dodges for every other classes’ 2, and having 25% faster run speed all the time, it’s hard to play other classes. Plus those other classes have cooldowns. Thief has ruined me, and I love it.

The possibility of physical and mental collapse is now very real.

We do have awesome escape skills tho, has to be said. If you spec for that. In great guilds I have found myself as the only thief type player in a pool of very experienced MMO players. Wierd.

Picked thief because I thought that is the control and mobility profession – at least that’s what those skill showcase videos made thief appeared to be on the official website: Caltrops, infiltrator arrow, flanking strike, steal, stealth.

Instead the class is really just an assassin with a different name, this is just another stealth glass cannon in any other MMOs. Back stab and haste pistol whip being the niche of the profession is kind of disappointing but I’ll see where ANET is going with this.

Because since I tried the Thief in FFXI for it’s treasure hunting skill, I fell in love with it’s for it’s Sneak Attack & Trick Attack setups, plus Flee, and Hide. It was my first MMO and I’ve played the stealthy class ever since in MMORPGs.

FFXI: Thief
FFXIV: …Didnt have a Thief class, but it did have the Thief skills, I was going to get all of my old abilities from each class and combine them into my own playstyle.
WoW: Rogue
Rift: Rogue
SW:TOR: Assassin/Operative
GW2: Thief

I guess it’s only natural. Too many years of playing the Tenchu series, and now Assassin’s Creed. It’s a playstyle I love. Even though Deception spec Assassin’s in SW:TOR wasnt as great over all, Madness (DoT) and Darkness (Tank) bored the crap out of me. I’ll play different specs of that class and others like I do here in GW2. But I will always prefer the burst spec.

I enjoy the thief defensive playstyle. GW2 is awesome in that playing defensively is mostly active (dodging, blocking, healing, etc) as opposed to mostly passive (gear, class, build). Rather than a 21.6% chance to evade non-magic attacks, you can actively dodge an attack as long as you have energy. That’s fantastic.

In terms of evasion-based defense, thief is the best. Staying alive as a thief is 100% about dodging, stealthing, and controlling the enemy while healing up the few hits you take. That’s the way I love to play, so Thief is best for me. It’s just such a fluid, mobile class.

I don’t block for three seconds, I dodge roll away from your big hit, immobilize you and get behind you, then vanish into stealth once you break immobilize only to reappear somewhere else while I daze you. It’s fantastic.

So…my first MMO was Star Wars Galaxies, and after the “Big” patch, I played as a spy. Saw a video, circa 2006 that had a rogue in WoW doing some cool things in UBRS. Rolled a rogue for 4 years. Played as a thief in Lord of the Rings online for a little while. Last year when SWTOR came out I played as a the steathy class (forget the name). So when GW2 came out, I went, maybe I should break the ice and try something new. So I started a Necromancer, and here I am today with my necromancer at level 11 and my 80 thief.

Thief/Rogue/Spy classes are like cocaine, they are addictive.

I’ve always liked the image of the Thief/Rogue sort of archetype. Don’t get me wrong – I like subterfuge and misdirection, but I’ve never been a fan of instagib/stunlock/whatever sorta mechanics. I like my subtlety.

As an example of what I mean, I loved FFXI Thief for its aggro control. In SW:ToR, I played Operative for its poison-based Lethality tree and not its backstab-based Concealment tree. The party’s wizard did more damage than me in my D&D 4e game, but I locked down enemies by stunning, blinding, and blocking visibility.

(In City of Villains, I preferred Dominators to Stalkers. There wasn’t a good fit for what kind of thief I lean to.)

I’m the rare rogue that’s a team player. I love the support available in the class. I love that I’m not limited to a burst-damage-from-nowhere playstyle (though I appreciate it’s an option).
