Trickery is already hurting heavily with the lack of synergy between Trickster and Flanking STILL not being fixed. Shadow Arts also took a pretty major hit as the stealth on steal trait is now kinda kittentastic for anyone not running a stealth burst build, or for anyone relying on stealth for condi removal.
Absolute +1. ArenaNet are not realizing that they are killing not just the main thief skill itself but also some of the traits that are related to it and that they worked so hard on. GG, ANet, disregarding your own hard work.

I re-roll main warrior to thief because of the nerfs and its starting all over again.
this game had a great start but now they are giving us b.s.

Pass! I actually like the change…for 2 reasons:
1: Steal does not go on short c/d if the target is out of range, because you can’t use it if the target is out of range.
2: It prevents out of combat group play for the thief…which (lack of purpose in a group) is just what they need to fall out of group compositions faster.
+1 For 3 reasons:
1) This change was not outlined in the patch notes, which is not only sneaky, it’s bad business practice.
2) This change resulted in a range bug where it seems to think I’m out of range when I’m clearly not (no red line under the skill)
3 (and most importantly) there was absolutely no need for this change. It solved a problem that didn’t exist. They “fixed” what wasn’t broken.
Please reverse this change, ANet. It’s in your best interest considering your Thief community is already pretty upset and ready to give up.
EDIT: One thing they should do, if their concern is accidentally activating Steal and getting nothing, is make implement Thrill of the Crime to make it not require a target (or something like that) since that is pretty much the sole reason Thieves intentionally activate Steal without a target (that and Hidden Thief).
My point remains the same. Please reverse the change ANet or give Thieves another way to contribute to their team’s mobility early game.

you really think steal was intended to be used without a target just to trigger some traits? this kind of change has happened to several professions and for good reason, i.e mesmer’s Imagined Burden. Spatial Surge is useless without a target, but a trait made it beneficial and was changed to only work in combat. same thing!
frankly, i think it’s better this way; impossible to accidentally waste steal now. bad feeling when a target suddenly goes invisible as you use it

The balance of this game is in a sad state, the worst it has been in ever, and they choose to ignore it, then do things like this. Guess they are all too busy playin their Reapers, Druid, and Dragon Hunters to actually take the time to do their jobs.

Personally I don’t find this to change much in the grand scheme of things, but seeing as how this mucks with other shadowstep combos (any shadowstep → steal, etc), I would vote for this to be rolled back, or at least for the aforementioned combos to be returned to their previous functionality.

This nerf was uncalled for, especially when the class is already struggling in every game mode there is. They also managed to introduce a new range bug as was mentioned above and all this right as the pvp season started.
