hello pvp community!

I’ll just summerize this. I spent the last 2 weeks with trying to get a proper summery of about everything that has been going on in PvP during the last months, and giving opinions on it. The article that emerged from that addresses both, players and developers.

Now, i wanted to post it here, but it’s about 30k characters long, and would take 7 (!) seperate posts to fit in this Forum (5k character limit per post).

So i have decided to post it into a different Forum, which is a german one. Now don’t hesitate to click this link. Even if the Forum is a german community forum, the whole article was translated into english by me

So basically, here it is: http://www.wartower.de/forum/showthread.php?1082863-Der-Kern-des-PvP-Eine-Analyse&p=8113093&viewfull=1#post8113093

Please discuss

Edit: I actually forgott that i planned to post something else in here:

The user djaddi.2780 had some very healthy additions to my article, which might interest you as well:

(…)

By now everybody should have realized that PvP isn’t sufficiently rewarded for most players. I personally like the solution with laurels, but basically any kind of PvE reward would do so more PvE players just try to get into PvP. However I think that hardcore players shouldn’t recieve more of these or better rewards because most players in this category play for the competition anyway (the new matchmaking improved this a lot and paid tournaments are more fun to play now so it was definitely a step in the right direction).

Something that should get more attention are the Qualifying Points. Those were – until the matchmaking was introduced – just as pointless as the rank because time is more rewarded than skill. Of course skill makes acquiring QP faster, but the basic system is wrong. The interesting point is that one might think that the matchmaking system changed this, but the opposite is the case. The matchmaking results in bad groups being able to farm QP against other bad groups just as fast as good groops against other good groups so they get the same amount per time although they play much worse. John (or was it John?) commented on that matter in the last State of the Game and said (roughly shortened): If you play more, you’ll automatically get better. That, dear John, is simply nonsense. Basically experience does help, but in the end you only need to know how to play against the meta-builds and how to play one of them to be able to compete on a high level in order to farm Qualifying Points. And as most people should have noticed there aren’t many meta-buidls.

(…)

It would be very difficult to avoid every build that requires a certain tactic to counter it (other games are not any better regarding this matter) just because it is only viable against casual players. The Backstab-Thief is one of those builds and doesn’t deserve accentuation.
The Portal is something entirely different, although it gets pretty much countered by Ride the lightning in the current tPvP meta it still is a huge problem in WvW. Of course I will not start moaning about the World vs Gate gamemode, the thing that I want to stress is that Portal is the perfect example of ArenaNet’s diffidence of severe changes (like removing or reworking the skill), which is – in my opinion – not good for such a young game. Now is the time to make big changes, although that should have happened long ago. The same goes for the Qualifying Points by the way.
If you never make severe changes to severely flawed things, they will always stay flawed.

I did enjoy reading this but i dont think it could make a difference. looks like they have their own good plan on mind and we will have to wait for it. I would like to know if they learned something about feb TvT update, because sharing with the community and Testing with them to see if something works is the only right move they made so far.

I only hope we get just a few changes in the right direction in this months because there will be more B2P/F2P MMOs inc this year and they will have a chance just like GW2 had and we are not even talking about being an ESport anymore, but being a decent/stable PvP Game.

Well, i still believe in the Game, and to some extend i still believe in Arenanet. Call me an idiot for it, but I still have in mind that this company was able to produce some pretty good pvp in Guild Wars 1. And even tough the team is completely different now, there is still a legacy to continue.

I still have fun playing this game playing with my team doing paids pretty much every night and I have full faith in this game. I bought this game for the PvE and now, I just log for prime-time tournies to play against other teams.

Didn’t read link, but continuing people’s thoughts on “I believe in the game. And/or Arena-net” imo – I have to agree with their faith in the game, I admit we’re in a weird place kinda like beta 3.0 (counting press and BWE as 2 separate.)

It is “take a break worthy” but come 2014 I’d be willing to bet we’d have a stronger healthier game and community.

If you are interested in pvp in the long run I’d say use this time to practice the game, and it’s an advantage to have practice from this time till it is balanced.

Though I am curious if anyone can answer for me? Anyone who played since release of GW1 how long did it take to get relatively balanced?

If they keep funding it.
If the majority of devs/coders aren’t cut since PvP generates so little money…
I, right now, wouldn’t be surprised if the PvP just stalls out.
GW2 PvP is an utterly kittenTY source of income for the company, the gem economy entirely revolves around PvE….

Whoever that economist they hired to work out the kinks in the system is, is an idiot.
kittening sell skins for money like every other game… not the ability to fail against hardcore premades… (tournament tickets)…

If PvP had some solid source of potential income with a decent sized population, I would see more hope, but there isn’t even that… I can’t see 2014 being enough of a change to pull next to anyone back that left this game.

That depends on your definition of balance. I only did Tombs, but for the first 6 months, balance consisted of a new overpowered build popping up every 2 weeks and then it would get nerfed, or a complete meta shift would happen to counter that build. Finding those overpowered builds was part of the fun, though.

An example of GW1 “balance”: One week, everyone runs Air Ele Spike to kill people instantly. A few days later, everyone has Mantra of Air (reduce air dmg taken by ~30% in most builds) to prevent it. A few days later, no one is running Air Spike. Things like that happened all the time, early on.

Then every time an expansion came out with new skills, balance was completely thrown out the door while people figured out new builds to get nerfed again.

The game was very much rock-paper-scissors. Personal skill made a pretty big difference for certain roles to overcome balance issues, though, so overall balance didn’t seem too bad after things got settled (a few months).

Nice read, man.

I fear there’s a good chance Anet will completely ignore this article, but good job nonetheless.

it’s sad that a so well written analisys will be forgotten into the QQ flow so fast.

It’s even more sad knowing you put so much effort into writing it, and not only it will be lost, but it won’t even be read/get a response by aNet devs.

But hey, they’re listening !!!

Guild Wars 2 has the worst combat depth of any MMO I have ever played. World of Warcraft had much greater depth than this during its 2nd and 3rd expansions.

In Guild Wars 2 there are no abilities on my toolbars that I can synergize to perform complex high damage combos. There are no control cooldowns that I can juggle in order to tackle extremely difficult encounters.

In short, the depth of the combat system is so shallow, basic and simple that bad players can beat good players. There’s no skill cap. There’s no steep learning curve.

As a result, there will be no athletes that the masses watch to learn. If you have no athletes, you have no spectators, if you have no spectators, you have no sport.

This game is so dumbed down that the best players are bored to tears.

I don’t see how you can say that when the largest ESport ever to exist gives there players 4 skills and they use simple mouse clicks to move and attack their enemies.

because LoL it self has a ton of depth in it, because of the map and the different phases in the game. Also its about setting up combos with each other. Or take a look at Dota and its very very long cd abilities, use the wrong one at the wrong time and you lose. GW2 does not have that, the game mode is simple and boring, its combat is just as bad. I do not agree that there is not a learning curve but GW2 has no were near the depth of pvp that LoL/Dota have.

Okay so I need to give another 2 Cents to this in addition to what was announced today:

The removal of the paid tournaments can be a step in the right direction, if Arenanet introduces something that further increases competition in the actual game. If this is not the case, than this is another blow to the Hardcore- and Elite community of this game.

New rewards in the Free tournaments are a great thing to have , especially for the lower end of the pyramid. But this is, as I allready stated by far not the only thing that matters.

People mistakenly believe that FPS style combat equals good. Not that I don’t enjoy the combat because I do but compared to something like DAOC was in it’s hey day it is shallow by comparison.
