Hey so I wanted to make a new character, and the name I wanted was already taken, which I was actually expecting. However, I figured I could just make one or more of the letters in the name have an accent on it, using window’s ALT codes. But when I tried using the code, although I did get an ‘o’ with an accent on it, the name was not accepted as only English characters are allowed when making a name. However I’ve seen plenty of people with accents on their names, and in fact some people in my guild have accents on their names. Am I doing something wrong, or is there a way around this at all?

Probably the most annoying thing about this game is that… every name is practically taken. This has led to people using accent marks in names, the problem with this though is a lot of people do not know how put them on so they find another player for parties, dungeons, etc. So here’s to hoping that this gets sticky’d so people can learn how to use them or, at the very least, be able to quickly look up the letter here. At a guess:
If this doesn’t work, try switching the language on your keyboard to one that has these accents. Or try switching the language on the launcher so it’s set for one of these languages.

Right I actually used one of these codes, or at least attempted to, during character creation. However when I used the code to create an ò, it was flagged as ‘not an English character’, and thus the name could not be submitted.

I came back and decided to actually read your whole post, after realizing I had missed what you said on the bottom. I will try this, although I’m not entirely sure how to switch the language on my keyboard or the launcher. If I can’t figure it out, I’m sure google can provide answers. Thanks for the suggestion either way.

I believe there is a little flag on the top right corner of the launcher that allows you to change languages. It will, however, cause the client to download all those particular language files.

Actually I tried that, changed it to French, had it download everything, went into the game, and I still was unable to use any sort of accented letter.

I’m not certain, but I think the name policy may have changed sometime after launch. If this is the case then existing names probably wouldn’t be changed, but new characters wouldn’t be able to use them. If the current rule is “English characters only” then all those accented and exotic characters will not qualify. Probably to stop someone from naming his toon Logan Thackery with “^”s over the A and such… (tried to type out the alt-code but it didn’t work).

I used copy-paste once to make a name using an accent. I literally just copied it off an Irish names website and pasted it in the box. Might still work?

Nope this didn’t work either. Looks like accents are no longer accepted. Thanks for all the suggestions, I’ll just have to get creative and figure out a different name

I seem to recall that this WAS possible early on and has been changed at some point. This issue came up in some previous posts where characters created with these non-English letters were unable to delete the PC (because they had no way to type in the name properly during the deletion process).

As I recall, they had to open a ticket with Support to delete the PC.

I guess my point is that if you find a way to do this, keep in mind your are going to NOT be able to delete the PC without assistance from Support.

It’s only certain accents that are acceptable. Accent aigu or grave (I know I’m not spelling those right) work but I’ve never been able to make a trema, cedille, or circumflex work.
