So I received a 3 day ban for inappropriate language and I’ve tried looking through my emails or trying to remember what it is that I could’ve said that was offensive.. I do remember joking around with some people that I personally know and was talking in mumble with but I don’t know what I said that could be deemed as a 3-day ban. :S

I think ANet does not investigate your emails, nor do they listen to your mumble conversations … so this should be about something you wrote on the chat and somebody reported you.

Anet doesnt care for things said outside the game (unless on this forum, the official twitterpage or the official facebook page).
They also dont care bout things said in party-chat and guildchat (if you dont like the tone feel free to leave your party or your guild). They dont listen in on things like mumble.

Anet does care bout the things being said in pm’s (if any of the involved people complains and report), local chat and mapchat.

Feel free to contact support to ask for more info.

So you can swear like a drunk sailor in party and guild chat, but not anywhere else GW2 or Anet related? Um, can I have source material or something that proves this please? I want to believe it.

There you go :P

Off course if your the owner of that backyard BBQ (in gw2 terms the guildleader) you have full rights to kick anyone you don’t like. It is why many guilds have a rule bout language and behaviour in the guildchat.

You know, these post come up so often I reckon ms gray should make a formal sticky post about how language filters are not a license to swear. This will reduce her workload and allow her to address ppl with “real” issues.

Your reading more in to that response then you should. That is NOT saying it’s alright to swear in guild chat or any where else. It’s just that it’s a lot less likely you will be reported, that’s all. If your in guild or party chat and another person reports you, you will be sitting it out for 3 days just like you would anywhere else. Bottom line, unless your in chat with friends who you know do not mind and will not report you, it’s best to keep the language toned down. If this is NOT correct and it is OK to swear as much as you want in parties or guild chat, then someone from anet needs to spell that out clearly.

And I do laugh every time one of these threads show up, usually the op will say they said nothing wrong, then Gail comes in, says o yes you did, you deserve the suspension. People must think no one actually bothers to read the logs, LOL!

Real issues? It is a real issue for me. I get a 3 day ban for something I don’t know what is being said. I remember playing another MMO and they’d actually send you a mail with a screenshot of what you said as proof. That’s all I wanted so I could you know say, “Oh I did say that I could also apologize to the person”. I just feel I received a 3 day ban for something I can’t recall being said etc. And yes I’m aware that they don’t listen to mumble/party and guild because I tend to swear there for comedic purposes and most people enjoy it/ don’t care. I guess don’t swear in map chat it is then. :S I just can’t recall me swearing is the issue.
EDIT: Isn’t there a swearing filter ingame? I mean if people don’t want swearing; they can just turn the filter on and stop reporting and wasting the time of Anet so they can actually fix the broken game?

It’s been said many many many many many times that the chat filter doesn’t give people a right to swear.

Someone made a post (apologies for forgetting who it was) with this paraphrased analogy: a person is undressing in his/her room. The window blinds (essentially a filter for the window) are not closed all the way. Does this mean a neighbor can go up to the window and peek in? No, that’s still a crime regardless of whether the blinds are closed all the way or are wide open.

I have the chat filter turned off because sometimes it filters out legitimate, non-offensive words. Does that mean, because I have the filter turned off, that I want to hear cursing and offensive comments/jokes? No, of course it doesn’t.

You can use these 3 days to think of things you can say that won’t get you a second suspension. I believe the second is 7 days long. If 3 days isn’t enough time to come up with acceptable words to say, maybe 7 would be.

How rustled are your jimmies? The whole point of a filter is so that it filters out bad language; and if people don’t want that sort of language they should use it. I apologize if logic is on my side.

No the filter is just a safeguard to prevent people from seeing it when someone breaks the rules.

It doesnt exist so you can swear.

This is in your TOS.

TOS has you adhere to the Rules of Conduct: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/legal/guild-wars-2-rules-of-conduct/
Here is the Rules of Conduct Breaches and Outcomes:
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/legal/guild-wars-2-conduct-breaches-outcomes/

Here is the relevent part:
“The Rules cover such basic expectations as:

•Don’t swear or spam or break any laws.
"

Have a nice day.

By the way, I expect you stop and maybe actually read the rules before getting all bent out of shape over getting banned for breaking them. Ignorance of them is no excuse. And to go as far as make someone else spend the time to pull them up for you because you couldnt be bothered to spend any time figureing it out yourself.

Scroll to the bottom. If you want more evidence of staff saying you can’t use the filter as a license to swear, do some forum searches. There are plenty of those comments for your viewing.

Really though, common sense means talking appropriately in chat. If people can’t do that, they earn suspensions. I see no problem with that system.

Don’t see where it says that a filter is a safeguard lol. So still awating that proof. And the moderator said:
“As stated, the fact that there is a filter does not mean you can go all out and say what you wish. A modicum of behaviour and good manners is expected from players, filter or not. In the future, please mind your words, as people can be offended.”
Which I agree with. If I was saying the f word 100x then yes I agree my ban is deserved.
The word modicum is used, and a definition for those that don’t know is small. Definition: A small quantity of a particular thing, esp. something considered desirable or valuable. So… still waiting.

Proof what for??
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/legal/
Never here is stated that I should play with the filter on

There is however this: ‘While playing Guild Wars 2, you must respect the rights of others and their rights to play and enjoy the Game. To this end, you may not defraud, harass, threaten, embarrass or cause distress and/or unwanted attention to other players. This includes posting insulting, offensive, or abusive comments about players, repeatedly sending unwanted messages, reporting players maliciously, attacking a player based on race, sexual orientation, religion, heritage, etc. Hate speech is not tolerated.’

This however is only there to tell you what you specially shouldn’t be doing. They don’t need to provide you anything for that they have another rule:

‘Account Suspension and/or Termination for Cause — NCSOFT may suspend and/or delete Your Account for cause (e.g., You breach, violate, or otherwise fail to comply with each and every provision of, this agreement) as well as any other Account ID, Account Display Name, NCSOFT Message Board ID, Character ID, Team, and/or characteristics related to an Account ID. Any suspension and/or termination under this Section 3©, as well as the timing thereof, shall be conclusively determined in the sole and absolute discretion of NCSOFT. Suspension and/or termination of an Account under this provision also suspends and/or terminates (as applicable) any license granted by NCSOFT under this agreement but does not affect any other provisions of this agreement.’

This last bit is part of the user agreement. You clicked I agree and therefor you agreed to it. To explain in more normal language. Arenanet has the right to suspend you anytime they want. They dont have to give you any reason and they don’t have to tell you what you did.

If you don’t like it that way go to that other game you like so much.

I know I sound harsh, but I always laugh when people are demanding proof or demanding to have a Arenanet official have a look at things. We all have no rights at all. The fact that you can ask support why you have suspended, that support might tell you, and that anet might listen and react to an appeal is all goodwill from the side of Arenanet. There is no legal ground for demands. You agreed that they can terminate or suspend your account anytime they feel like it. If don’t like it you shouldn’t have agreed. In that case you would have had a refund of your purchase.

I don’t take things personally; so don’t worry. Harsh or not; you stated facts and I completely agree with you. I’m all against hate speech and actually physically or verbally trying to assault someone which Is why I wanted proper proof of what I said because I don’t think what I said was actually anything to “Hate Speech” as they called it. I think it was mistaken out of context on what I said and that the person if I did say it to them, I knew them and someone misinterpreted what I said.. But then again, I don’t know what I was banned for; I just want to find out for what.

You can ask support what you said and they will provide you with clips. But please, why bog down the system from people who really need help? How many people honestly do not know they swore, insulted, or engaged in the use of bad language? I suggest that for the most part, players should serve the brief time-out, take it as a warning, and moderate future chat.
